GM Aerondor |
Passing through the dining room Magrat heads into the kitchen...
The temple kitchen is long abandoned and smells faintly musty. The kitchen’s massive stove and rows of cooking implements are all covered with a patina of rust and dark flecks of mold. Dangling in the center of the room, above a solid oak table, swings a halfling man on a stout cord.

Sadly not. He is hanging from his neck. Nearby there is a pot that has been kicked away...
You are still at the door.
Magrat Garlic |
"Blimey!" Magrat calls for their greeter (or any other temple staff who are near.

GM Aerondor |
Durlo Deadshield |
Durlo continues to flip through dusty tome after tome. Every time he thinks he's narrowed his stack and almost done, Esper manages to find more and adds to his pile. He goes on flipping pages and grumbling sour nothings in Dwarven.
I assume we can start and stop anytime we want? Say, if the team wanted to explore another part and wanted us to come?
Esper Zevral |
Esper can hold the fort here if you want to wander, Durlo.
Birseko Naam |
Sorry for the delay in posting - have been traveling a lot recently - should be better now.
Has the party split up? Uh oh... Anyone want to help Birseko weed the garden?
Birseko takes the gnome's suggestion that he weed the garden as a good opportunity to fulfill one of their mission objectives (drafting the layout of the garden). Before starting, he checks to see if any of his companions would like to help him.
GM Aerondor |
Please make a DC 18 perception check. If you make it, you hear (faintly) the sound of Magrat calling out "Blimy!"
If you wanted to stop you can, there are no compulsions, but I've provided information based you completing your time there.
Durlo Deadshield |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Durlo looks up from the book he is thumbing through and snaps his head over to Esper. "Pathfinder Magrat is in trouble! We have to aid her!"
In a whirlwind of motion he runs out the door in the direction of her voice. Not one for subtlety, he shouts, running, "Pathfinder Magrat! Where are you?! Everyone, to me! We may have trouble!"
Once he has located her, he barrels into the kitchen, weapon drawn. "What is it?"
Birseko Naam |
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
In the garden, Birseko doesn't notice anything amiss unless he hears Durlo?
Esper Zevral |
Understood, Aerondor. Esper will come back to finish up in the library after following Durlo, even if it takes her longer than expected.
At Durlo's words, Esper jumps. "What? Oh! Alright!"
Esper hurries out of the library after Durlo, sure to fix anything he knocks over in his haste.
"Apologies," she tells the woman in the library in their way out. "I'll be right back."
Then she hurries off after the loudly yelling Durlo.
GM Aerondor |
Birseko can make a second perception check to hear Durlo, but there are no windows between the library and garden, I make it 150 ' which would be a DC 15 perception check - I'l assume you have left all the doors open!
We'll go to rounds now.
As you approach the figure, you notice a large piece of jagged metal. Why, if the halfling took his own life.... so could you! Will DC 15 save please.
Status, bold may post:
Magrat - will save
Esper
Birseko (perception check to be aware)
Kett (I'm assuming you are in the library?)
Durlo
stuff
Birseko Naam |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Birseko hears nothing and happily putters in the garden.
Kett, Raptorscale Scholar |
perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12
Kett follows Esper and Durlo out of the library in confusion, not sure what they heard.
Magrat Garlic |

With that dirty knife? I don't think so. You could catch something very nasty from something like that.
Esper Zevral |
Esper hurries off down the hall to the sound of screams.
Double move.
Durlo Deadshield |
Durlo likewise rushes down the hallway, making an riotous scene in the tranquil place.
"Pathfinder Magrat! Esper, I think the screams came from over here!"
Durlo double moves as well toward the kitchen.
GM Aerondor |
The team rush toward the kitchen area while Magrat eyes the dirty knife with disgust. The body is most definitely dead. The impulse to take her own life is incredibly strong, but Magrat manages to back out of the room.
And with that will save I think we can drop out of initiative.
Various members of the community, startled by the cry, also rush to the dining room. "What is the matter?"
Durlo Deadshield |
"What kind of effect was it? Compulsion?" Durlo says almost out of breath, running into the kitchen. "See, this is what you get for serving dark powers! Friend Magrat, the world is trying to tell you something."
From a distance, Durlo attempts to examine the nature of the magic. If possible, he will use studied target on the corpse to see what effect surrounds it, increasing spellcraft and will saves by +1.
Will save, if needed: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 +2 if mind-affecting, +2 more if a spell/supernatural ability, +1 if studied target applies.

"What kind of effect was it? Compulsion?" Durlo says almost out of breath, running into the kitchen.
"Mostly a lot of neglect I figure. I mean look at this place. I wouldn't be caught dead in 'ere. Who''s in charge of cleanin'. I told you all we should have given the rug a good wash before we came."
"See, this is what you get for serving dark powers! Friend Magrat, the world is trying to tell you something."
Marathon cocks an ear and then says. "I don't hear anythin'."
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
GM Aerondor |
The person who arrives looks sadly at the hanging figure "That was Wei... he recently lost the last finger on his left hand to the Kiss of Kordea." he shrugs as if this is unexpected but not tragic.
For the moment I'm assuming you are staying back from the body
As far as Durlo can tell the body died from a self inflicted situation. However as he gets closer he too feels a massive urge to grab the knife and finish himself off..
Esper Zevral |
Esper arrives at the back of the crowd and looks around. She's surprised at their disinterest in a friend's death.
"How sad," Esper remarks. "Does this happen a lot?"
After someone replies she enquires if he will be buried in the crypt.
Esper Zevral |
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Durlo Deadshield |
Magrat cocks an ear and then says. "I don't hear anythin'."
”Infuriating woman!” the dwarf says. ”Are we even speaking the same language?”
When the others chime in, he also wonders about how often this happens and why. He says, ”Tell us more about why this has happened.”
Diplomacy, aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9
When all's said and done, he will go up to the body and cut it down. ”We should place him in the crypt.”
Kett, Raptorscale Scholar |
Kett keeps a healthy distance from the kitchen, this is shaman work, I'm keeping my distance.
"Have you lost family members to this before?"
diplomacy; aid: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (18) - 2 = 16

diplomacy (aid): 1d20 ⇒ 8
"Maybe we could check under the rug?" Magrat suggests.
GM Aerondor |
They have little more to add. "He has been feeling sad since he lost his last finger. So many it isn't surprising."
Esper Zevral |
Esper looks at the dead man's hands.
It has NO fingers? How did he tie himself up there with no fingers? Did I misread something?
"Do many feel Korada's displeasure so often?" Esper asks tentatively, not quite sure how far she can pry without offending.
Esper approaches the body and inspects it.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

Assuming that Birseko has figured out that something is going on...
Birseko comes to find the others. "My goodness, that fellow doesn't look good! What happened to him?"
GM Aerondor |
He has no fingers on one hand, still has fingers on the other
"It is not the displeasure of Korda, merely a rebuke for assuming trying to receive visions before you are ready. There is no pain or suffering."
Esper looks at the body, it is definitely dead. As she approaches it, she too has an urge to drive a nearby sliver of wood into her heart, but overcomes it.
There is nothing especially suspicious about the body
The worshipers bring a large sheet and wrap it up. "We will bring the body to Dakang"
Esper Zevral |
Feeling such foreign feelings wash over her, Esper focuses her psychic powers into her eyes, opening her vision to the auras all around her. The golden iris' of her eyes expand, covering over her pupils and taking up her eyes entirely. Then she looks around the room suspiciously, curious what kind of magic is at play here...
Casting detect magic and looking around the room.
Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
As the others move to take the body away, Esper watches to see if they feel the same compulsion as she did...
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
"To Dakang? Will he see to the poor man's internment in the crypt?" she asks them.
GM Aerondor |
"Dakang performs a ritual to celestially transcend those who depart" explains the worshiper.
There is no magic as such in the room.
Know-Religion may be helpful here
Kett, Raptorscale Scholar |
knowledge religion; trained: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15 Kett looks up as he records a short-hand description of the scene in his journal.
Kett, Raptorscale Scholar |
"Your table is haunted... Is that why you stopped preparing food traditionally? Or is the kitchen table restless and wrathful that you have abandoned it?"
GM Aerondor |
"Haunted? No" the worshipper shakes his head. "I think you are mistaken. Korada would not permit that. We don't use the kitchen because there is no need with Korada providing food. Why spend time preparing food when one could be in meditation?"
Magrat Garlic |
"And it saves having to clean, I suppose." Magrat says in a way meant to be wry. "'Meditation'. That's just formalized laziness. It's just thinking after all and you think while you clean up. I think you all just need to get off your duffs and do some work and yoga."
GM Aerondor |
"We also practise active meditation with spinning balls.." offers the worhsipper. "Perhaps that is more your thing?"
Where to? Back to the library? The garden? The meditation rooms? somewhere else?
Durlo Deadshield |
"Hm," Durlo says. "We should find a way to be rid of this malignant spirit haunting this place, but I have no training with such things."
Did the others, the people of the temple, seem like they felt they compulsion?
"Birseko, you mentioned a gnome needed help in the garden? We could help with that and then return to our catalogue."
GM Aerondor |
None of them have gone near the table, I was figuring you were taking down the body for them as you had already gone in there.
In the middle of the overgrown garden there is indeed a gnome named Gastidemn.
Esper Zevral |
Esper considers attempting to use her holy water in the kitchen... If Kett was correct and it was a haunt that might be useful. But she only had one. Best to save it.
Esper lets her magical spell drop, causing her eyes to revert back to normal, and then leaves the room, allowing the worshippers to tend to their dead. She returns to the library to finish sorting through the back room.
Esper Zevral |
Oh, Esper isn't taking down the body for them. She was watching to see if they could feel the compulsion if they entered the room to get the body.
