I had a dwarf paladin fighting some wererats.
First, he missed his attack.
Then his silvered short sword was disarmed.
Then he pulled out his battle axe and missed that attack.
Then that weapon was disarmed.
Some fighter with a pole arm managed to carry the day as my guy prepared to smack a wererat with a crossbow swung like a tennis racket...

OK, this is probably the longest kobold battle I've been in. Of course, there was this one time the heroes had to defeat the "kobold champion" to get on the king's good side. Of course, because of the wackiness of AD&D it was a fire giant polymorphed into a kobold and it still had all its stats. The honorable paladin got a quick wake up call after the first hit.
"The kobold did how many points of damage?"
This doesn't count 4th edition in which the first game everybody was shocked to learn that kobolds and goblins had 20 to 30 hit points.

In battle massages?, Those Calistra followers....
I LOVE Smite Evil!!
One of the avanced races gets Smite Evil as an ability, I think. Half-celestial, maybe? Whatever it was, my group had one as a ranger. Man, that was one over-powered character. My paladin carried her bow for her...

In battle massages?, Those Calistra followers....
Hey Ast, you might have to join Ezrek, Omrax and I in the healing huddle after combat is over ...
Omrax the Bold |
Oh sorry Astyannax - totally missed the italics on your comment. So much for reading it on a small tablet.
(LOL and what is worse is that I though Luisila said all of her comments aloud. Now I am glad I did not comment on those!)
I have a feeling after our exchange with the first captain that maybe the crazy man is more our speed. :)
Luisila |
**Disclaimer** If you want someone to blame for this,
Blame: 1-999 GM Neb , 1000 Lisa Stevens: 1d1000 ⇒ 218
Top of Page 3 in Gameplay. A bit of advice, unless somebody is bringing gallons of water, Create Water should be memorized daily ...
Fancy writing Out Of Character – DM Fiat stuff for n00bs in Gameplay!
*tsk tsk*
Now on with the show!
Luisila wakes up alone in a fog-filled dell.
“Are we back in the forest? Something’s not right ...”
Then she feels two metal strings connecting her ears to a slim white Wayfinder that rests in her hand. The Wayfinder’s top surface has a glass ‘window’, which suddenly glows, snows and sparks into life, revealing an image of ...
In alphabetical order ...
A younger version of Astyannax, helping a battle-scarred man mount a noble destrier. The older man teases Ast affectionately about a dusty chapbook bearing the symbol of the Last Azlanti tucked into his belt ...
... of Badger mounted on Uthrad; racing across plains, forests, deserts and tundra, before suddenly lifting into the air, hurtling towards Golarion’s moon at astonishing speed ...
... Ezrek’s face fills the window as he looks up from the tome in his hands. He looks straight out of the window, pauses then shakes his head and snorts gently before dropping his head back to his book ...
... Haraldir hunts game in the wilderness, at the direction of another man. The landscape is wild, rugged ... and beautiful ...
... In a dark place, Omrax fights a lich in a horned helm. The battle is illuminated by light emanating from a moon in the shape of a young woman’s face ...
Then the window spits and sputters before a new image appears – that of a Noble Outsider in the form of a Giant Black Wasp!
Luisila is astonished. That looks like Menotherian, Herald of the Savored Sting! I must be having a Vision – a Vision of N......aaahhhh!!! Surely not?
Menotherian intones: “Luisila, ... Water ...”
Luisila guesses ... “You want to get some dirty water off your chest?”
Menotherian continues undeterred: “... Create! ...”
Luisila: “Yes after lights out, we novices would often Gyrate.”
If a wasp-shaped alien face can look exasperated – this one does ...
“... Fie, foolish girl – you’re on your own! ...”
The Wayfinder goes blank ... and then the ground starts SHAKING ...
Oh, no! Luisila thinks. Golarion-quake! I’ve offended the Goddess!
Luisila wakes to the gentle shaking of A,B,E,H,O: 1d5 ⇒ 3 Ezrek, who whispers kindly, “Luisila, your watch.”
She remembers nothing of her Vision but thinks ...
This Pathfindering is thirsty work! I wonder if anyone remembered to bring any water?
Luisila |
I . . . I am not worthy. I know you expect more for me and I've only given you all the minimum. I shall try to re-double my efforts! Or at least kill you all in the process.
Hey Ben,
I can only speak for myself of course ... but I don’t feel that you’ve given us “the minimum” at all. Far from it! I’ve been having a great time.
Omrax the Bold |
I cannot claim to understand the visions (or hallucinations) of Lady Luisila, but definitely having a great time with this game and group. Thanks for running.
Haraldir |
Guys, just FYI - due to my job, I had to go to Naples, Italy urgently and net is very scarce (read:bloody expensive) here. I will be back on Tuesday. Feel free to GM PC me by then, and I will try to post when posssible by then. Cheers
Nebten |
Luisila, Summon Monster spells have a casting time of 1 round, instead of 1 standard action like most spells. Unless you are a Summoner, like our good Badger or have Rapid summoning, it . The Eagle will come in right before your next turn. I'll keep the rolls you performed. Since its a full-round action, you are unable to take a move action.
Luisila |
Ben, Thanks for the clarification about Summon Monster I for clerics.
I have a couple of questions.
Is Astyannax hurt at the moment? I'm confused as to whether the first spear attack beat his flat-footed AC?
The person I hit with the stray arrow ... are they still on their feet or down?
Nebten |
Hmm, did you edit that after my post Astyannax? I didn't notice your commit of high = miss when I posted. I know its a matter of player preference but I play the way if you roll the number of miss chance or less, you miss.
Like 20% miss chance is 20 to 1%, 50% miss chance is 50% to 1%.
Omrax was following the same rules too.
In any case, I'll go ahead and record Astyannax's strike as a hit. Now we know for next time.
Astyannax is hurt.
The stray arrow knocked somebody down, but that's flavor text.
Astyannax |
We may have cross posted. I had something like (low hits like Ormax and reworded it to convey the same thing. I never saw your post).
I took Omrax's post to be 1-50 was not miss since he swung an attack after the roll, so I copied it.
A miss is fine with me if it's consistent with Omrax.
The chair had no chance, regardless...
Omrax the Bold |
Not knowing any better, it made sense that it should always take the1-50 as a miss, otherwise gets tricky since the roll can be known before posting. Something I put in my notes for when I run my other games online. Or the GM always rolls it.
Nebten |
For no reason what so ever:
Blinded
The creature cannot see. It takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class, loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), and takes a –4 penalty on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks and on opposed Perception skill checks. All checks and activities that rely on vision (such as reading and Perception checks based on sight) automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) against the blinded character. Blind creatures must make a DC 10 Acrobatics skill check to move faster than half speed. Creatures that fail this check fall prone. Characters who remain blinded for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.
Astyannax |
I think I saw a Laurel and Hardy episode like this fight scene...
BTW, a very cool site that, if it continues to be developed, will quite a resource for PF players.
I say that as a big fan of the Inner Sea World Guide.
Luisila |
I agree, this fight is pure comedy ... I hope Ben's enjoying it at least.
Ast, liked the running with scissors comment.
Astyannax |
Astyannax, who ended First Steps I lying, unconscious and bleeding, in the streets of Absalom, has, in this pivotal encounter:
A - Chopped up a chair;
B - Nearly impaled a waiter;
C - Used a pickup line on (unknowingly) the randy party clericess.
D - While not actually doing anything that would hinder the enemy.
The Society really needs to better screen their candidates.
I suppose we can blame it on the "A cavalier is lost without his horse' syndrome...
Been fun so far!
Astyannax |
BTW, to anyone who liked my comment to the bartender:
Nathan Fillion, who most RPGers know as the star of the Joss Whedon scifi movie (Serenity) and tv series (Firefly), and of course, Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog, is the star of the tv series Castle.
He is FANTASTIC in the role of a rich writer (think James Patterson) who gets to play cop.
He and his mother are being held hostage during a bank robbery in one episode. Things are very tense. At one point, he turns to his mom and says, "Mother, I am no longer satisfied with the service at this establishment. I believe that we should take our business elsewhere."
Setting, mood, timing, delivery, etc: it was PERFECT. I love that kind of humor, which I emulate (poorly).
If you haven't seen Castle, it's a very good cop show and it made me a Fillion Fan and led me to discover the brilliant Dr. Horrible...
Nebten |
Yes, yes. It is all working out perfectly. Muahaha!
After going through all 3 First Step series, I feel they are some of the hardest "Introductions" to a system around. Yet people keep recommending them. ;p
Just so you know Astyannax, you will almost never get to use your horse in any scenario. There is supposedly a level 9 cavalier that plays in my area that has yet to ride his horse.
That is a funny line though. At least you had an oppertunity to bust that one out. I haven't caught Castle yet, but it looks like they are doing mass showings of it on TNT now. Fillion is a funny f@#$%&.
Astyannax |
I know the website was having problems, but we seem to have hit a lag. Whose turn is it?
Cavalier: I think I was enamored with the recently discovered APG. Otherwise, no idea why I'd pick that for my only PFS character. Doesn't make much sense, even with the "searching for Aroden" fluff.
Haraldir |
Finally back in my home. Off to read 50+ posts in game thread, and hopefully still be able to post (something comprehensible), if the site allows it (too many fails - anyone else had troubles with Paizo site loading?)
Omrax the Bold |
I wondered what was going on with the site. Hopefully goblins were able to get everything back to stable working order.
Luisila |
Haraldir, you’re back from Cheliax!
Hope you didn’t sign anything with “red ink” put in front of you by a man with a goatee.
Haraldir |

Yeah, I'm back, and no there were not a lot of signing going on. Btw. why Cheliax?!? Italy is not that bad...or you had some other reference on your mind. A question to GM - on the map I do not see the escaping gillmen/woman. Do I have a lone of sight to shot him/her, or not?
Luisila |
Yeah, I'm back, and no there were not a lot of signing going on. Btw. why Cheliax?!? Italy is not that bad...or you had some other reference on your mind ...
I was referring to this from James Jacobs himself.
I get a real Venice vibe from Westcrown.
I am a fan of Italy and things Italian, and hope to go there one day. My significant other has been there a couple of times and loved it.
Luisila |
I blame it on the rain.
I'll blame Holiday stress...
Don't blame it on the rain.
Don't blame it on the Holiday Stress.
Nebten |
The map is now updated. Nobody saw where she went, so I took her off the map. At your current position Haraldir, you do not have line of sight of the gillwoman.
Love the Boogy song to start my day. Followed up with . . .
Luisila |
Thanks for that Ben, I think REM are great and what an appropriate song for today.
I'm not worried about us IRL per se ... but surely the Mayans weren't making a prediction about that intrepid band in gameplay ...
Astyannax |
Harold Camping in 2011. Mayans in 2012. As a Christian, I anxiously await 2013's prediction..
And when it finally happens, I'm going with This Song
The original is a classic, of course.
Half of us going out the front, the others out the back. What could the future possibly hold???
Nebten |
And thus ends A Vision of Neb.
I'm sorry for bum-rushing you at the end. The encounter was pretty much over. The Low Azlanti have swim speeds of 30, so there was no way to catch up with them once they are in the water. At least, I feel, you were not dragged along like a cat on a leash like this group or this one.
This is a good time to tie up the adventure before the holidays. Plus I'm going to be out of town next week.
I need your email address for me to send out the ARs. I've only got Luisila's so far. It came with bribe pictures too; $5 to share what the VIP suite gets you in "Calistria's temples". I'll work on those this morning.
If you have a Day Job, go a head and roll it. Keep in mind that because the Azlanit got away, there will be a detection in gold and items.
Thank you all for participating. I may run another game in the new year, but we'll see how things are going at that time.
Any questions, comments, ugly remarks about the game or GM style feel free to post them or PM me.
Luisila |
Hi Ben,
I have downloaded the Chronicle sheet, Thanks!
I am a bit disappointed that we didn’t beat the last encounter ... but that’s nothing to do with you as GM. I liked your GM style - fair and at a pace appropriate for a PbP.
Omrax, this means level 2 right? Congrats.
Thanks for all your help and patience, Ben. I’ve learned a LOT about the game system, and had a good time in the game and with this party. I see Omrax and Ast are now running their own games on the boards. If you do decide to run a new game, I hope you’ll keep me in mind.
Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to all.
