Blackheath collapses heavily into a chair and is struck speechless for a few minutes --quite the anomaly. He sits lost in thought and then whispers: "So, we have the beginning of our answer and it raises more questions then before." He looks to his companions and asks, "What do we know of Harrowstone or this... Whispering Way?

I'll use Bardic Knowledge in a few fields to see if I have anything on either topic.

Wow, but better to use those lousy rolls on know checks instead of saving throws or perception checks, I guess.

EDIT: Good job with that Religion check, Gravleon!

Silver Crusade

Gravleon remembers chatting with Petros about his lectures and research. He specifically recalls some disturbing facts:

The Whispering Way:
The Whispering Way is a sinister organization of necromancers that has been active in the Inner Sea region for thousands of years.

Agents of the Whispering Way often seek alliances with undead creatures, or are themselves undead. The Whispering Way’s most notorious member was Tar-Baphon, the Whispering Tyrant, although the society itself has existed much longer than even that mighty necromancer.

Harrowstone:
Harrowstone is a ruined prison—partially destroyed by a fire in 4661, the building has stood vacant ever since. The locals suspect that it's haunted, and don't enjoy speaking of the place.

Harrowstone was built in 4594. Ravengro was founded at the same time as a place where guards and their families could live and that would produce food and other supplies used by the prison. The fire that killed all of the prisoners and most of the guards destroyed a large portion of the prison's underground eastern wing, but left most of the stone structure above relatively intact. The prison's warden perished in the fire, along with his wife, although no one knows why she was in the prison when the fire occurred. A statue commemorating the warden and the guards who lost their lives was built in the months after the tragedy—that statue still stands on the riverbank just outside of town.

You will need to do some research or otherwise gather information to know anything more.

"That gives us a place to start. If you will heed the words of a clown, I think we must do a few things...

"First, if Kendra has anything she can add about this or --as unpleasant as it may be-- any signs of violence or injury upon Petros's body, then we must hear it. After that, with her help, let us see if there are any helpful books in the house, NOT the dangerous tomes, though. Those must be secured. I doubt we will find anything, for Petros's would likely have put it with the journal if there was, but it pays to be thorough.

"Then some of us must distract and pump the priests of Pharasma for information, while two of us shady-types (probably Vandel and me) follow Petros's footsteps and 'liberate' from the Restlands false-crypt whatever helpful article is hidden there that was alluded to in the journal. Does anyone have a connection to Pharasma?"

"Next, let us visit the memorial statue of the guards and see if it holds any clues.

"Finally, we must see what we can learn from the locals, but we need to do it carefully. They are a reticent and superstitious lot, and not likely to want to gossip with strangers, but I have a plan for that though it will require a few gold coins.

"I'm sure I don't need to say it, but we also need to make sure Kendra and these tomes stay safe. We cannot neglect our solemn charge, while beginning our quest. So, let us hear some ideas on protecting Kendra and the house while we begin to collect information.

"Of course, full disclosure here, I am a fool and most people say I'm cracked, so if you don't wish to participate in the schemes of this particular madman, I fully understand."

Blackheath waits to hear the party's verdict on his plan.

"My father's body was discovered laying on its back near one of Harrowstone's walls. The stone face from a leering gargoyle from the roof above fell, and the heavy block crushed his face and neck." At these words, she cannot help but weep.

Ravengro at a glance:

Town Square:
A simple wooden gazebo at the center of a grassy circular plaza serves as the hub for Ravengro’s major festivals and gatherings. The town council also uses the gazebo as a platform for major announcements. When their labor allows it, farmers who have musical talent often converge here, forming impromptu bands. The town square is also where the local farmer’s market gathers every Wealday.

The Posting Poles:
The best sources for local news in Ravengro are the posting poles located throughout the town. Here one can find dozens of messages tacked to one of the five huge posts jutting out of the ground—generally, all five posting poles have identical notices, but periodically one or two messages might be missing from one of the poles. Pevrin Elkarid, the oldest son of the owner of the Laughing Demon, has taken the role of Post Boy for the last 3 years, charging 1 cp to transcribe five copies of a post and then ensuring that the copies are posted for at least a week. It is at the Posting Poles that the locals leave news of nuptials, job postings for farmhands, or notices of missing pets. The most popular regular item at the Posting Poles, however, is the "Wealday Parchment"—a weekly posting written by elderly councilman Gharen Muricar that summarizes Ravengro’s current politics.

The Laughing Demon:
Zokar Elkarid holds the philosophy that the best way to meet the horrors of the world is with a jest, for if one can laugh at the worst life has to offer, there remains little to fear. His warm and friendly tavern does its best to live up to this admirable philosophy, down to the menu.

Ravengro Town Hall:
In classic small-town style, the people of Ravengro use this all-purpose facility for virtually everything, including council meetings, wedding receptions, and, when it rains, even the annual cook-off. Town council meetings are generally scheduled on the first Oathday of the month, and often last well into the night.

Temple of Pharasma:
The temple dedicated to Pharasma, the Lady of Graves, is Ravengro's only religious structure. It is also the town's most elaborate building. Its eastern facade displays an intricate stained-glass mural depicting a stern Pharasma judging Count Andachi, one of Tamrivena's most infamous previous rulers.

General Store:
Goods of all kinds can be procured here, especially tools and everyday items such as pots and pans. Luthko and Marta Avanaki run the store with their five girls.

Ravengro Forge:
Jorfa is one of Ravengro's most jealously guarded assets, for her skill at the forge is out of keeping with what one would expect to find in such a small town.

Jominda's Apothecary:
Jominda Fallenbridge keeps a well-stocked supply of pharmacological provisions, both herbal and alchemical.

Jail:
Ravengro itself has never been a crime-ridden town (despite—or perhaps because of—the presence of Harrowstone), and its relatively small jail has always been more than enough to handle the town’s criminals (mostly public drunkards, vandals, or other minor thugs who rarely spend more than a few days in a cell).

The Silk Purse:
Farming is a tough business. Drought, pests, and floods can make a year’s hard work vanish in an instant. To keep one’s farm afloat, those lucky enough to own land will often pledge it to a moneylender for credit. Others must pledge a percentage of the gross income from their next season of labor. Fortunately for Ravengro’s farmers, the Silk Purse is always ready to provide loans.

The Outward Inn:
The board and breakfast provided by Sarianna Vai come highly recommended. The inn has 10 rooms, though it is rare for more than four to be occupied at any one time. Local musicians and storytellers often visit the main floor and basement tavern in the evenings, performing for coppers at the smaller, more intimate gatherings.

The Unfurling Scroll:
When their parents can afford to spare them from the farms, a few "lucky" children are sent to study under Alendru Ghoroven, a retired wizard-turned-teacher. Alendru teaches reading, history, and math, as well as beginning magical theory. He seeks to elevate “the commoners,” though few of his pupils enjoy the strictness of his classes.

The Harrowstone Memorial:
Other than the looming ruins of Harrowstone on a nearby hill, Ravengro's most distinctive landmark is a 25-foot-tall, moss-covered stone statue that overlooks the river. The statue depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon—a depiction of Warden Hawkran.

The Restlands:
A large stretch of moorland reserved for interring Ravengro's dead.

Harrowstone:
This reminder of Ravengro's original purpose looms over the town from atop its bleak hilltop, a constant inspiration for tall tales and bad dreams.

Blackheath comforts Kendra. "Thank you for being strong enough to do this. You are truly your father's daughter."

After a respectful period of time, the clown grabs a sheet of parchment, and in a legible, but eccentric hand, writes the following postbill:

WIN a PURSE of GOLD!
storytellers, raconteurs, liars, humbugs,
and fishers of "the one that got away"

STORYTELLING CONTEST!

BLACKHEATH
clown to king and king of clowns

CHALLENGE for GOLD!

THE LAUGHING DEMON

He runs out to The Laughing Demon to speak to Zokar Elkarid and make sure that there will be space for the contest and added custom at his tavern, before giving the bill to the postboy, tipping him a few copper to see that word gets around.

"Tonight we'll see if a chance for fame and gold will loosen some tongues. But, brethren, I'm a tad light for putting together the prize purse. I can contribute two gold -- can we pool our resources to bring it to five?"

GM, do you think 5 gold would be an desirable prize in a place like Ravengro? Also, this is assuming that Elkarid would be amenable to such a contest at his bar, but from the short description you gave, he sounds like he might be someone it would appeal to.

Male Human 1 Druid

My friend, a storytelling contest is an imaginative solution. And if we had more time, I would agree with your course of action. but look here

Monty points to the journal and reads.

It is imperative the Way does not finish. My caution has already cost me too much time. I am not sure what will happen if I am too late, but if my theory is right, the entire town could be at risk

Monty closes the book.

I agree that we must collect the tools mentioned in the journal, but we must make haste.

Kendra, love, may I ask who discovered the body?

Monty examines the "dangerous" tombs and the chest. Fingering the pages of the books carefully before opening them.

Three of these have notes tucked into them indicating that they should be delivered to one Montagnie Crowl, a professor of antiquities at Lepidstadt University.

The fourth, the rich purple book with the lock on it, has a note indicating it should be delivered to Embreth Daramid, a judge at the Lepidstadt Courthouse (although the note asks for this delivery in particular to be handled discreetly, and includes the address of Embreth’s home so that the PCs can deliver it there).

I suppose you pick up the first one. Let's say that it's the jet black book. You find the note sticking out of it as I described above.

The title is: On Verified Madness.

Monty flips it open and skims through a few pages. As he reads, his eyes widen with horror. He drops the book and covers his eyes and eyes and shakes his head. Thoughts of The Infinite run rampant through his mind for a moment. He has discovered that this black book is a treatise on aberrations and other entities found on Golarion that possess remote ties to the Dark Tapestry, the name given to the dark places between the stars in the night sky.

"I don't believe the professor intended for us to read them -- just protect them. If they had something helpful, they would have had a 'read me second' note. Vandel, I am going to head over to the Restlands to look for the false-crypt mentioned in the journal. Will you come with me? "Haste is great, but the professor directed us to those clues for a reason and we can't go into this blind... Unless, of course, anyone here knows how to kill a ghost using swords."

"We could leave the lion to guard Kendra and the books temporarily. I think -- though I might be wrong -- that we might draw extra attention if we walk around town with a lion anyway. Once we have a better idea of what we are dealing with, we might make a more permanent plan."

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, Blackheath. But, there is no idea how long we will be away. And the villains mentioned in this journal may be formidable.

Have you any friends in town, Kendra? I would feel more comfortable if you could stay with relatives for a few days. Also, have you felt threatened by anyone in town, dear?

"Those are good questions and useful avenues to pursue, Monty. We might even see if the Church of Pharasma can protect her for the night.

"As for an estimated time frame: we can't get the 'tools' in the crypt until after nightfall (or we face the rightful anger of a mob at the Restlands) so we can gather information until that point. If we head to the prison after that, I expect we will either be dead or returned by morning."

What is the travel time to the prison?

Grand Lodge

Male Human Druid, 1

Yes, excellent. Kendra, do you know any kind priests of Pharasma who could shelter you? I am a touch nervous of leaving you there since the Lady of graves has such a diverse flock. Perhaps a friendlier church might be a better option. Yet, if you know a kind soul at the church of Pharasma then it would give us an perfect reason for entering their grounds.

As for a night or daytime exploration, I am not nervous of such things. A deep crypt shields the sun from a necromancer's eyes. Such vermon might attack at night, but they are always strong in their dens.

Kendra speak to me...oh no you digging into the dangerous books again!

Blackheath nods in agreement with Monty.

"I'm torn about entrusting her to the care of the Church of Pharasma for the night, myself -- especially since it doesn't seem Petros shared everything with them. But, it might be our only alternative. We need to trust someone. If Kendra has no suggestions, maybe we can see how we feel about it after we visit the church. We might be able to get a better sense of the people and their motivations."

"Certainly, it would be a good idea to keep Kendra with us while we collect information in the town, though we might still need to leave Kiki to guard the tomes. However, I don't think Petros, when he asked us to protect his daughter, would have felt that risking her life in a haunted prison would be the best way of doing that. Petros Lorrimor was wiser and more powerful than any one of us. We only have a chance of defeating the evil and keeping Kendra safe if we use every tool at our disposal and combine our strength. I can't imagine taking Kendra into that danger when we don't even have a solid idea what we are up against.

"Let us keep Kendra with us now (if she will come) and set a guard over the tomes. After we have a better idea of the type of evil we are facing, we can discuss how best to keep her safe. Does that sound reasonable?"

Grand Lodge

Male Human Druid, 1

Don't answer Kendra, let the men figure this out...lol

This is an excellent point. Look here.

Monty unrolls the will and reads.

please delay your journey one month and spend that period of time here in Ravengro to ensure that my daughter is safe and sound. She has no one to count on now that I am gone, and if you would aid her in setting things in order for whatever she desires over the course of this month, you would have my eternal gratitude

Monty puts the will back on the table.

The tone of this will indicates no immediate danger to Kendra. He simply wants us to be available to her. Kendra, does this sound correct?

I DON"T KNOW, she says, my Pa' is dead and all you want to do is murder hobo. If you don't want to stay here and knit a nice scarf, fine, raid the damn tombs, see if I care you bastards!

"I prefer to stay here, at Lorrimor Place. This is my home. I feel safe here. I've spent the last several years of my life here." Kendra says.

Gravleon thought to himself" well then good that seems to be settled Monte do you think you can leave your cat here with her I believe it'll be able to quickly ascertain any danger I give her some comfort while we're gone. well let's get back out into this weather find out all we can about this whispering way"

"Now that we've settled that, let us try the Church of Pharasma first. Let's be careful about mentioning the Whispering Way directly as we look for clues today. We don't want them to know we are investigating -- that would put Kendra in danger. We need to be subtle, and to do this carefully. If anyone thinks they might blurt something out, or lose their temper then let them trade places with the lion"
Blackheath tries to hurry to the church before anyone changes their mind.

GM, my original diplomacy check to gather info at the church was 26. Blackheath is trying to get information on the crypt, the lists of people in the prison (I think that was mentioned in the journal), and anything else Petros may have been looking into recently.

"I don't like leaving all these tomes together like this, we're making easy on any thief that might come to take them. I think we should separate them and set them around the house." Vandel suggests. Then nods to go with Blackheath.

This is a lion, my dear Gravleon, not a cat. Panthera leo is in a different family from Felis catus. Regardless, Yes, I think she will be fine. There is nothing in the will that indicates any threat to Kendra. Thus, Kiki should come with us. He is quite a help in a pickle.

Anyway, I have no issues splitting us these books. However, as a member of University of Lepidstadt's faculty, know that I am be ultimately responsible for these texts and will protect them with my life.

Monty hands Vandel a copy of the book "Human taxidermy, fun with the hole family."

Let us go friends.

Silver Crusade

Hm. Trying to catch up here. First you posted about wanting to investigate at the tavern. Then you posted about wanting to go to the temple of Pharasma. Then, in the discussion thread, you posted about the tavern mechanic. So... Where are you going: tavern or temple?

Let's start with the tavern.

____________________________________________________________

OK. Proceeding as though everyone is at the The Laughing Demon tavern--to avoid splitting up the party. We'll say that Kendra is with you, too. She could use a drink.

Zokar Elkarid, the tavern owner greets everyone with a sincere smile and a big "Welcome!" But, he's the only one to do so. The other tavern patrons, while neither rude nor hostile, don't seem to care one way or another about the party.

Kendra, however, is a beautiful young woman who has lived in Ravengro for the past 15 years--since she was about 10 years old. They all greet her warmly; she is one of their own. Most of them give her a few words of condolence about her father. (Those that don't simply nod at her with sympathy. They're at a loss for what to say. These are, after all simple folk. This is an agrarian community.)
____________________________________________________________

Kendra makes introductions. (It's a small enough place and Kendra commands enough respect and attention that everyone can hear her.) "This is Zokar Elkarid, proprietor of the Laughing Demon. Zokar, these are my father's friends: Blackheath, Dolgarth, Gravleon, Monty, and this little one is Kiki!" She give Kiki a little, freindly rub between the ears.

Zokar responds, "Any friends of Kendra's are friends of mine! Can I get you folks anything to eat or drink? Our special of the day is wolf balls!!"

Kendra raises and eyebrow at this. Her expression tells you that she doesn't expect these "wolf balls" are actually made from wolf. "Oh? And how did you make them. Zokar?"

Zokar can't help himself. He runs to the kitchen and brings a small plate to Kendra. They're actually lamb meatballs crafted to look like the face of the full moon. Zokar clearly loves a good joke.

She tries one: "Delicious!"

Grand Lodge

Kiki purrs and rubs against her.

Monty asks Kendra Any specialties that I should order?

Monty fills a glass with water and Kiki drinks. The beast empties the glass and then rushes back to Kendra.

Sorry, GM, we've been a little all over the place, but I think we are getting into the flow of things.

The idea for the Tavern was, per the flyer written up, it would be done later that night to give locals a time to gather. However, I was under the impression that I didn't get a chance to put up the poster when you pointed out that the party had chosen to do something else (at that point the plan was to lose no time and head out to fight evil). When the party seemed to decide that we would investigate all day after all, I figured I would explain the concept behind the "storytelling contest" in case they wanted go with that idea and do it at night.

Now that we are at the tavern, if it is okay with everyone, let's just pretend the sign never got posted for the contest that night. My main concern is just seeing what we can learn in town -- I don't care how we do it. I don't wish to create more distractions and confusion. Sorry for the back and forth!!!

Blackheath places himself at the bar and tries to casually talk to the barkeep and some locals to see what they might be willing to say about the prison...

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Grand Lodge

Yeah. Maybe it would be best if we add an asterisk for actions taken as a group. Is there some way we can vote for actions that are clear for you? Like *two votes for we go to prison*. Also, don't gather information checks take hours? Is it possible to just ask, eat, and move on?

That's a good idea about the *votes*, Monty. For my part, I'm going to add an ooc "tl;dr" to some of Blackheath's posts to sum up the important info (ex. "Blackheath suggests they listen at the door"). I think some information is getting lost under the RP fluff text.
