Tessara Omelion PFS |
Then please allow me to ready an action when it presents itself to try the Hex. Thanks.
Barnaby Rockford |
Barnaby contemplates waiting for the massive earth elemental to surface to strike at it, but seeing the first gargoyle fall takes a deep breath and hustles forwards.
"Maybe that has something to do why they never last long." the half-elf replies to Jal as he steps next to the fellow half-elf, studies the gargoyle Swift action and swings his pick up to the flier.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 14 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 14 + 4 - 2 = 19 for damage: 1d8 + 8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 4 + 4 = 20
GM Upaynao |
Barnay's blow misses the gargoyle, the pick deflected off of the creature's rough skin.
And once again does a fist of rock emerge.
Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Concealment?: 1d100 ⇒ 94
Again, the creature misses, punching out where Jal is not!

With his life links established, Ethendril advances on the remaining gargoyle and attacks it with a powerful swing of his greatsword.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine)(power attack): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 152d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 1) + 13 = 17
Lyan Firesoul |
Lyan takes a few swings at the surviving gargoyle while eagerly eyeing the elemental's grasping arms
Attack, PA, Justice: 1d20 + 13 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 13 - 2 + 2 = 14
Attack, PA, Justice: 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 + 2 = 21
Damage, PA, (magic + slashing): 1d10 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 4 = 15
If the attack hits, the gargoyle becomes sickened due to Lyan's sword's Cruel quality.
"Does anyone have a plan to make the earthen creature fight us honorably?!"
Jal Vaduva |
”That IS the point," Jal responds to Barnaby as he hacks at the remaining garboyle, ”And get on the walls! The rock thing will at least have to come the surface, then.”
Full attak blue (including Studied Target, Power Attack, Furious Focus)
+1 katana, attack 1: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 12 + 2 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 7 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 6 + 2 = 19

+1 katana, attack 2: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 27 <— crit?

— add'l damage: 1d8 + 7 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 6 + 2 = 18
Then Jal will 5’ step down/left (hopefully getting him out of easy reach of the elemental. (map already updated)
Rowanna Nachtalus |
Rowanna approaches the melee area from the south and places a Slumber Hex on the remaining gargoyle. If it is defeated, she waits for the elemental to emerge to place a Misfortune Hex upon it.
Slumber Hex DC 21 Will on Gargoyle, otherwise ready an action to place Misfortune on Elemental, DC 21 Will.
Tessara Omelion PFS |
The elemental is already under a Misfortune hex, Ro.
Rowanna Nachtalus |
The GM said you had no line of sight, Tess. I now see that you also readied to use the Hex if it appears, so (if the gargoyle is dead) I will use Evil Eye on the elementals attacks if it appears this round. It will take -4 to attack rolls for 1 round, but the -4 lasts for 8 rounds if it fails a DC 21 Will save.
GM Upaynao |
Just to clarify, each time the creature makes an attack, it "appears" long enough for readied actions to go off. As such, Tessara's Misfortune has already landed on it.
The gargoyle shrieks and dies, it's form pierced by blades from below.

Rowanna Nachtalus |
Ah, I see now where the Misfortune was placed on the elemental. I was looking for confirmation in the text, but it was in the initiative roster. Now that I have a better grasp of the GM's combat post set up, I should be able to avoid misunderstandings in the future. My apologies.
Barnaby Rockford |
Seeing the last gargoyle drop, Barnaby grips the pick tightly as he looks nervously at the ground. "Anyone have a way of drawing this thing out?" The half-elf calls behind him. "Or is this going to be a game of whack-a-mole?"
Reading an action to strike at it when it emerges
Readied swing, Power attack: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 14 - 2 = 24 for damage: 1d8 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 4 = 19
GM Upaynao |
Barnaby readies himself to attack the creature. Which proves not to be that hard, as it is coming for Barnaby.
Will Save vs Evil Eye DC 21: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Will Save vs Evil Eye DC 21 (Misfortune): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Concealment (High is good): 1d100 ⇒ 58
Once again, in spite of the creature's tremorsense, Barnaby is able to dodge aside and land a solid blow!

Seeing how well that worked the last time, Barnaby Readies again.
Ready, PA: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 2 = 32 for damage: 1d8 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 4 = 15
Confirm? (thanks Fossilbight!): 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 14 - 2 = 22 for more: 3d8 + 24 + 12 ⇒ (5, 6, 4) + 24 + 12 = 51
"It's been a bit since I've encountered an elemental." the half-elf says as his pick recoils and he leverages it for another strike. "I had forgotten how single-minded they can be."
"Or maybe we should just out-run it?"
August Autumnwind |
OK, so I think only the earth elemental is left, correct? Its hard to keep track with the site going wonky. Seems I have two turns to use so here goes.
August looks beneath his feet, hoping to be able to strike the enemy underfoot with his greatsword!
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24 for Damage: 2d6 + 22 ⇒ (3, 4) + 22 = 29
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 for Damage: 2d6 + 25 ⇒ (2, 1) + 25 = 28
The following round he tries again!
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19 for Damage: 2d6 + 22 ⇒ (4, 1) + 22 = 27
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 for Damage: 2d6 + 25 ⇒ (2, 5) + 25 = 32
Wow, those weren't too good. If they have a chance to hit and concealment is involved August does have Blindsight.
GM Upaynao |
The creature is burrowed underneath, which means you cannot hit it with a full round action. However, it becomes vulnerable every time it goes for a slam attack. It has partial cover at that point, as opposed to total cover. Now, I'm going to assume the first attack here is a readied action to whack at it August.
Barnaby, I just realised, you are rolling damage as if this was a pickaxe. This is a heavy pick. 1d6, one handed. Please adjust accordingly. I'll adjust your damage dealt. Also, don't forget you drank an extract of Heroism, so you attacks are at +16 with Fossilbane.
Fossilbane Damage round 2: 1d6 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Fossilbane Damage round 3: 4d6 + 48 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 4) + 48 = 59
The crit will trigger when it goes to try and slam Barnaby again (surprise!). Technically it's not wounded yet, but when it does emerge and trigger Barnaby's readied action, I'd like someone else to have readied an action that we know would deal... I don't know... Maybe 5 points of damage after DR? :)
I'll be botting one of the musclemen or women in tights tomorrow morning if noone has had the chance to fulfill my wishes by then.
Barnaby Rockford |
Whoops! Thanks for the catch! The flaw with a one-time weapon is that I'm still getting used to it.
Lyan Firesoul |
Lyan stows his shield and stands ready to strike the elemental.
Damage, PA, two-handed: 1d10 + 8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 6 = 22
Rowanna Nachtalus |
Confident in a quick victory thanks to number of front line warriors in their group, Rowanna stands back and waits for them to finish off the elemental.
Delay for now.
Tessara Omelion PFS |
Tess follows Ro's suit, and delays, not quite certain what other strange encounters the group will have in this new place.
GM Upaynao |
Katana vs Elemental: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Of all the attacks readied against the elemental, only Barnaby's hits, and what a magnificent hit it is!
Barnaby, you're letting go of the weapon to deal that pin damage right? Right.
Concealment (High is good): 1d100 ⇒ 75
Fossilbane Pin?: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13
The creature's blow goes wild as Barnaby lets go of the pick, pinning the elemental's torso to the ground. It struggles, but ultimately fails to escape, as it's life-force crumbles away.
Combat over!
"You handled that earth elemental well!" A Varisian woman is leaping towards you, obviously enjoying the low gravity. She lands with a chuckle and dusts herself quickly, shaking her auburn hair clear.
"We have located the three avenues of approach and have some more information on them. It is your choice how to proceed, so here is what we know:"
Area B: Into the Crater
"The crater is swarming with defenders, fleshy and otherwise. If you choose to go there you need to be prepared for combat, but it seems the most direct route to the center of the asteroid."
Area D: The Frozen City
"If you want to try and find an alternate route, one way is to go take a look at that frozen city we located on the asteroid’s dark side. Exploring the city might also tell us how to help the trapped being."
Area F: Sea of Light
"If cold isn't your thing, on the sunny side we have located the wreck of a metal craft. It might contain the same kind of objects as can be found in Numeria. Buuuuut... That side of the asteroid is bathing in direct sunlight, without any protection from an atmosphere. Hope you brought your man-kinis boys" she jests with an easy laugh.
"It's your decision" she continues on. "I’ll be off to brief that group over there on what we found" and she moves away before you can even start to think of questions.
We already sorta had a vague discussion about this, but just to confirm: Where do you go? (First two in the same direction settles it)
Lyan Firesoul |
Lyan's sword hand clenches when he hears "swarming with defenders", but he holds his tongue on that matter.
Explore, report, cooperate.
"I'm not one for meddling with Numerian relics, so the frozen city sounds like a good place to start."
While the party deliberates, he uses a wand on himself.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
August Autumnwind |
A fight? I can handle a fight. Really! I know I ain't done all that good so far but I'll try harder!
Barnaby Rockford |
"If nothing else, there may be signs of what is going on here." Barnaby saws as he retrieves the pick from where it skewered the elemental in place. Well that was useful. A shame this needs to go back so soon. "Unless 'Space gargoyles' are something new, they shouldn't have been able to even breath."
He looks to the others. "What about you Jal? Hurt?"
Jal Vaduva |
"Nope," Jal responds as he slides his blade back into its scabbard across his back, "I'm good." He winks, holding up two forearms, one tattooed with a rendering of Desna while the other bears a similar one of Calistra, "Seems my girls were smiling on me."
He looks over at the Varisian woman, "Will the Planar Adaption spell protect us from this place's heat and cold? Or do we still need to figure a way to handle that?" He shrugs, "The crater and the frozen city seem most suited to my skill-set."
Tessara Omelion PFS |
"I agree with attempting the Frozen City route. I'm not the greatest at combat, so I'd prefer this avenue."
Ethendril h'Caramore |
"The Frozen City also sounds the best to me," Ethendril says after ensuring everyone is healed.
I have a lot of channels if anyone needs any.
Barnaby Rockford |
Barnaby draws out the Endure Elements potion helpfully offered before they left an uncorks the bottle's stopper.
"Well, here's hoping this'll be enough at least." He toasts Jal and drinks it.
August Autumnwind |
August looks disappointed that he will not be going to what sounded like a battlefield but he is willing to lead the way to the party's destination regardless.
Perfectly fine with me, the Frozen City awaits!
Jal Vaduva |
Jal watches Barnaby pull the potion from the Sociey-gifted pouch. With a look of surprise, he looks into his own pouch. "Hot damn!" he exclaims, "how did I miss that?"
He returns Barnaby's toast and drinks his own.
*facepalm*
I fail at reading, apparently.
August Autumnwind |
August will copy his new friends and do the same, figuring it must be a smart thing to do.
Rowanna Nachtalus |
"I concur with the rest of you, the Frozen City seems the best route." Rowanna says quietly as she takes a moment to feel a sense of awe that she's on the surface of an asteroid.
Tessara Omelion PFS |
Tessara also drinks the extract, following the others' lead. "I wonder what this Frozen City will be like? We might be the first intelligent life to ever step foot there!"
Barnaby Rockford |
Barnaby opens his mouth for a moment, about to ask who built it then, but then closes it without replying. Let her have that one.
GM Upaynao |
Travel Time (min): 2d10 + 10 ⇒ (1, 3) + 10 = 14
It only takes about fifteen minutes before the Pathfinders find themselves walking amidst the remains of a civilization long gone. Ruins, some in much better shape than others, stand as far as the eye can see, all covered in snow or ice. You hear nor see any living creatures so far, and corpses are far and few in between. The city's mysteries abound, amidst the howling wind.
Conditions: Low Gravity, Severe Cold. Check the Environmental conditions key for more information.
Suddenly, the path you follow opens into a plaza at the end of which what must have been a temple lies open to the elements, its facade crumbling and its doors and windows gone. Beyond these openings, you believe that you see a pool of frozen water, which nonetheless gleams with forgotten magic. Surrounding the pool and dispersed around the chamber, vaguely humanoid forms stand frozen, silent witnesses to the ages.
Lyan Firesoul |
Lyan bolsters himself with Ragathiel's bravery (Casting Heroism), before examining the temple from a distance.
Perception: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (11) + 18 = 29
Rowanna Nachtalus |
Still feeling incredibly cold despite the effects of Endure Elements, Rowanna uses her Sleeves of Many Garments to create a nice warm fur coat for herself.
Now ensconced in some semblance of winter gear, the Chelish witch casts a Detect Magic spell on the area to look for any spell resonances.
Barnaby Rockford |
Used to a significantly hotter climate, Barnaby shivers as well. Peering through the window at the frozen forms, he shakes his head.
"So much for living intelligent life," the half-elf mutters quietly. "Do you think it was the climate, or some kind of space-ice medusa?"
He stares at the dead creatures and tries to identify the bodies, then pulls out a scroll from the Arhcive and casts it.
Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 2 + (3) + 2 = 28
Add 7 if Arcana would ID the bodies instead
Also casting Resist Energy (Cold) from one of my two scrolls
With a sigh, the detective turns to the rest of his companions. "Well, time to be Pathfinders then." He heads slowly towards the temple's opening, hoping to get close enough to detect the strange arcana surrounding the pool.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 2 = 32
Spellcraft (after detect magic when close enough): 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 18 + 2 + (5) + 2 = 47
Jal Vaduva |
Jal's eyes scan the strange sight, and–without comment–he takes point, rotting ahead a bit. Then, he hugs walls and obstructions, using whatever cover is available to ghost ahead of the group, watching for threats or oddities.
Percption: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37
Stealth: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 19
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril also pulls his winter cloak tighter around him, shivering despite the spells.
He scratches his beard with a gauntlet. "What a bizarre place," he observes. "I would never have thought anything like this existed. Let us see what this frozen being is..." he says, advancing slowly toward it.
August Autumnwind |
August will move forward, trying to do his best to defend his friends from any threats that may appear.
GM Upaynao |
Approaching the dais, it looks to Barnaby like these humanoids, whatever they were we some sort of archaeological expedition, judging by the tools and devices left behind and frozen solid.
Jal and Lyan cannot help but notice the ramshackle, disorganized mess these tools are left in. As if they tried leaving in a hurry.
Detecting magic, it seems that there is some form of arcane reservoir, with deep traces of the divination school that has lain forgotten here. However, the lattices and general arrangement of the spellwork here... Well. It's definitely not from anywhere on Golarion.
As the pathfinders looks about, a figure coalesces in the middle of the pool. That of a smiling older woman in rather simple robes, nonetheless wearing spectacles. Her demeanor is welcoming.
Back to you! Oh and just as a reminder, sleeves of many garments give the illusion you are wearing a type of garment. They don't transform into that garment :(
Lyan Firesoul |
Lyan moves closer eyeing the apparition with a mixture of interest and distrust.
Knowledge (arcana/planes/religion?): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Barnaby Rockford |
Barnaby starts backwards as the figure appears, but then cautiously takes two tentatively steps forwards, arms outstretched.
Does she seem solid, translucent, or literally formed out of the pool's water?
"Hello. I'm Barnaby. We're" he gestures behind to the others. "Explorers. We sensed something calling us to this place and so came to understand. Was that you? Are you trapped here? What is you name? Can you tell us what happened to these people?"
He will try Aklo first, then cycle through Common, Elven, Osirian, Protean, Celestial, Draconic, Sylvan, Polyglot, Jistkan, Abyssal, Ignan, Infernal, Azlanti, Tien, and Terran to see if any get a reaction.
Jal Vaduva |
Jal stands quietly off to the side, happy to let Barnaby take point in social matters. He's about to lean on the structure to his right before realizing it's likely a frozen creature. Instead, he just scowls at the figure, studying her for any insights.
Making the figure a Studied Target, then watching it for interesting signs or insights.
Perception: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 18 + 2 = 32
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 2 = 14
Rowanna Nachtalus |
I wasn't aware that they errata'ed Sleeves of Many Garments. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
While Barnaby cycles through languages and Lyan and Jal begin studying it, Rowanna casts Comprehend Languages on herself and moves within 30 feet of the older woman figure.
GM Upaynao |
Jal upon studying it believes that this is an echo from another time. Perhaps sentient even.
The woman nods at Barnayby's words, seemingly able to understand them all. She goes to open her mouth when suddenly, a look of betrayal, pain and horror washes across her face. From below, a darkness seems to rise, enveloping her features until a new woman is revealed, a dark spirit of ages past which screams in agony, shattering the ice around and toppling statues.
While we are in an initiative of a sort, your order does not matter, as the spirit will act at the end of each turn. At this point you can attempt two types of actions:
Defusing the Spirit: In order to tame the runaway magical effects here, you will need to understand what exactly is happening, interpret the inscribed runes around the basin, perform emergency repairs, and calm the
spirit oracle. This requires five successful skills checks using Diplomacy, Disable Device, Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (religion), Linguistics, or Spellcraft. Once a skill has been successfully used , future uses of the same skill become harder. In order to perform one of these actions, you must be within 10 feet of the pool. Some spells may help.
Distracting the Spirit: Any work atop the dais will leave those who perform said work vulnerable. If you feel brave enough, you can try to distract the spirit by succeeding at an Bluff, Intimidate, or combat maneuver check. Alternatively, you could always try hitting it. But if you hit it, it may very well hit you back. Again, spells may help.
