FF 1-02

Water laps steadily at the pier as sailors, laborers, and merchants rush busily around Absalom's port. Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin's summons called for a meeting aboard the Sixwing Drake, a sleek sailing ship. The Drake's captain, a Varisian woman and fellow Pathfinder named Zarah Zendrani, stands at the helm of her vessel. "It's not like Valsin to be late," she mutters, furrowing her brow.

Please take a moment to introduce and describe your characters and their reactions to receiving a summons from the Venture-Captain. You are all currently on the deck of the Sixwing Drake, awaiting Valsin's arrival.

The young, blonde, tall and muscular woman was enjoying getting on a ship, and was very excited.

I can't believe it! My first mission for the Pathfinders! And we will meet Valsin soon? I mean.. "Captain Valsin".. err, "Venture Captain Valsin"? What does he looks like? Is he like a real captain, I mean, like, old soldiery? Should we salute him? Or more like a ship captain? How should we adress to him, in fact? Do we have to travel by boat? It will be my first time on a boat!

Catching up her breath, she smiles and holds her hand up
Sorry, I'm quite nervous. I tend to speak to much when I'm nervous. Or so I've been told, when people around finally managed to talk.

She carefully removes her shield and spear, putting them on a barrel, and massage her left arm. Her hide armor seems brand new, and the helmet wasn't yet dented

You got to give some rest to your body as often as possible if you need to use them in a battle. I know that my armor and weapon doesn't seem to have seen much action, but I won some money recently and was able to buy some new stuff. I'm sure we'll see some action in the Pathfinders.

A slight, fair-skinned human (at least she appears to be) with shoulder-length red hair into which is woven a rose's bloom smiles at the young woman.

The woman was armed with a crossbow and small blade, but the light cuirass she wears offers minimal protection in exchange for mobility. Clearly fighting is not her strength.

"It is always exciting to meet new people. My name literally means 'fragrant blossom of dawn's first light' in the language of the fey folk, but I found it simpler for others to refer to me as Aurora Rose. I am a maiden of the line of the Daughters of Cernunnos."

"This," she says gesturing to the creature strumming on a harp in the corner, "is my 'blossom', so you may refer to her as Blossom."

The creature is definitely unlike anything you've likely seen before. She has feathered vestigal (or immature) wings in a variety of hues. Her head and torso are that of a very young elven woman, but from the waist down her features are serpentine, covered in shimmering scales. A bow and quiver of arrows is slung over her back.

"My task is to help foster Blossom until she grows into her full stature. As long as I am her mentor so can I also call upon her to be my helper."

Blossom continues to strum on her harp trying to avoid making eye contact with the others in the room. He playing is quite lovely, especially for one who looks so young.

Aurora Rose? Nice name, I like the sound of it.Easier to remember and quicker to say than "Fragant blossom of dawn first light", of course.

She looks at "Blossom" and comes closer, timidly

A tall, broad-shouldered woman with dark skin and blond hair sits on the deck, leaning back against a crate. She looks like a human of garundi background, but her golden eyes have a hint of other heritage.

"Her music is lovely. Hmm, daughters of Cernunnos? That is a hell of a coincidence." The woman stretches and stands up. She wears a battered breastplate with the insignia of some small town's militia on it, and a holy symbol of a bow and arrow, as well as a wayfinder, hang on chains around her neck.

"My family lore says that a daughter of Cernunnos is in our line somewhere back, generations ago. Every other generation, someone's born like me, with a smidge of celestial blood in her veins. Guess we might be related, eh? Put 'er there, cousin!" She holds out a strong hand for Aurora to shake.

"I heard there's some trouble that needs fixing, and they picked mostly fresh recruits for it. No offense, I ain't much older than y'all, but I've seen a few things, and got a few useful trinkets during my travels." Though she looks like a daughter of the desert lands of northern Garund, she has a distinct Nirmathi accent.

She hands over two wands to Maelstrom. "Y'all might find these useful. Mage armor, and burning hands. Got 'em from Janira Gravix, if you've met the lass. Only got a few charges each so go easy on 'em, but I figure if it keeps you alive it's worth it. The burning hands is for any swarms we might bump into."

Burning hands (CL 3rd, 4 charges). Mage armor (10 charges). I also have a magic missile wand but you seem to have that covered yourself, and I don't think anyone else has it on their spell list.

Sorry I took so long!

A tall, slender halfling looks around from the bow of the deck. He carries a simple walking stick and a masterfully crafted backpack filled with numerous items a Pathfinder would likely need. His armor looks as if it has seen better days, but it is some protection against weapons, but he appears quite nimble upon his feet. "Personally, I was raffah hopin' to get me Confirmation out of dah way first, but when a Venture Captain calls, especially Valsin, then you come. Even dough I was just abou' finished with a new lock I've been tweakin' recently..." He stops short when he realizes that the assembled group probably does not care about his locks.

"Name's Gage." He offers his hand to any that will shake it. "Say, I feel like a right lucky gent havin' all you beau'iful ladies about. How'd a fellah like me become so lucky?"

I picture Gage speaking with a bit of a Cockney accent on his Common. Figured I should bring this up in the event my (poor) attempts at typing out his accent may be distracting or bothersome to some folks. If that is the case, please do let me know and I will type in standard english!

FF 1-02

Captain Zendrani nods to each of the Pathfinders as they board the vessel, and stands by as they introduce themselves. Her gaze remains on the crowded piers, and she looks impatient. "I thought there would be more of you. Well, Valsin is late himself, so I suppose we have a bit more time..."

As if on cue, a tall and meticulously groomed man pushes his way through the crowd and up the gangplank, cursing audibly.

“Whoever supervises this mess of a port needs to be dumped in the sea!” he grumbles.

Before he speaks to the assembled team, the man pulls Captain Zendrani aside and thanks her for prioritizing this assignment. "Trust me... it'll be worth your time, old friend."

Once the remaining Pathfinders arrive, the tall man looks around at those gathered before him. “Just the group I requested. Perfect. I’m Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin, and I took great care in selecting just the right Pathfinders for this assignment.”

Valsin reaches into his belt pouch and withdraws a small, folded paper before continuing. “A few days ago, I received a curious note from a rather unexpected source. It’s not every day that I get a request from an agent of the Aspis Consortium.”

Captain Zendrani’s eyes widen, and Valsin smiles knowingly. “But Magali Delroya does not appear to be your typical Aspis agent. As you surely know, the Aspis Consortium pursues a variety of activities across the Inner Sea that the Pathfinder Society finds abhorrent. It seems that Delroya has been working with them for some time, but can no longer stomach the snakes herself. She wants to stop a shipment of an experimental drug from leaving Diobel later this week. It’s bound for a number of locations across the Inner Sea region. According to Delroya, she can’t ask the local authorities for help, because the Aspis Consortium has already struck a deal with a faction of the Kortos Consortium, a powerful merchant collective. Her hands are tied, so she’s come to us for help.

In this note, she outlines three different tasks that would help to disrupt the Aspis long enough for her to move the shipment to a secure location, out of the clutches of the consortium. Once you accomplish two of these tasks, she’s willing to meet with you, but not before."

Valsin gives a knowing glance to Captain Zendrani's skeptical look. “Normally, I wouldn’t trust an Aspis agent at any hour of the day. But our sources in Diobel have confirmed the Aspis and Kortos consortia’s activities. Everything checks out, so we are presented with a unique opportunity. If we help Delroya, we might not only strike a financial blow against the Aspis Consortium, but we could also reveal their dealings with the Kortos Consortium—and possibly prevent their arrangement from turning into a more formal alliance."

He clears his throat, "Furthermore, we hope to stop this drug from spreading across the Inner Sea region, and if we—if all of you—do a good enough job, we might even convince Delroya to join the Society. A turncoat agent would be a valuable asset in our ongoing run-ins with the Aspis Consortium."

“Take some time to look over Delroya’s note and the tasks she has set for you. If you have any questions, now is the time to ask. Remember, the Aspis Consortium is a long-time enemy of the society, but the Kortos Consortium, while certainly suspicious, is not our enemy. It is a complex organization with many factions, and we should avoid antagonizing any of them, except when necessary to oppose the Aspis Consortium.”

With that, the Venture-Captain hands you a pair of letters to read.

Sorry about all the front-loaded reading!

She smiles at the other Pathfinders, bowing to each in turn. She ends with Gage and a wide grin overtakes her face as she recognizes the humor in her attempt to bow her 6'3" frame to that of a halfling. Sitting in the back of the room, quieter than you would thing a living being could be, is a strange sight. A man, at least, he mostly looks like a man, sits with the hood of his green and brown cloak pulled up. Even with that, you can see the faint wisps of what can only be described as glowing blue tattoos that poke out here and there from under the collar of his adventuring shirt, the sides of his hood, and out from under his long dark hair. Furthermore, the tattoos seem to pulse, but in rhythm with what, you don't know. Also, his eyes glow bright blue. He doesn't say a word throughout the entire briefing, and looks at the group expectantly as they discuss options. It's only then that he stands, and when he speaks, its awkward, as though he has more experience watching people than actually talking to them.
My name's Maelstrom. I haven't met any of you before so I thought I'd introduce myself. I cast spells. I mean, I'm a mage. Err, I mean, I do cast spells, but that's because I'm a mage. I mean, I'm a mage because I cast spells. Ugh. I hate talking. I have spells for either way we do this. I can prepare the spells to blow stuff up, or I can prepare the sneaky ones. Or a mix of both.

Superbly discontent with his verbal blundering, Maelstrom sits back down, and then blurts out.
Oh, and you can just call me Mael. Maelstrom is such a mouthful.

FF 1-02

When you are finished discussing the mission, Valsin cautions you that you will only have a day or two, at most, to complete your tasks once you arrive in Diobel. He suggests that you procure any last-minute supplies before heading out.

After taking a few hours to shop in Absalom, you set out for Diobel. The journey goes smoothly. As you sail, you have time to reflect and discuss what you know about the Kortos Consortium. Natives of the Isle of Kortos can attempt this check untrained.

Knowledge (local) DC 10:
There is no formal alliance between the Kortos Consortium and Aspis Consortium, and the two groups are likely working together in a limited capacity—at least for the time being.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:
Although the Aspis Consortium seems to have an agreement with part of the Kortos Consortium, neither group is centralized enough for such an arrangement to be very stable. Causing a major disruption in their operation would very likely sever ties between the two groups.

Knowledge (local) DC 20:
House Locosta, the faction allied with the Aspis Consortium, claims that its major interest is in Qadiran spices, but the family derives most of its profits from buying and selling Qadiran slaves.

Deciding which missions to undertake can take a lot of time in PBP, so I will simply move forward with the chemist encounter as that one has some interest. After that I will assume we are doing the tavern encounter unless you all decide otherwise. Feel free to discuss in the OOC thread. Another post coming soon to describe your entry into Diobel. Feel free to make your Knowledge (local) checks and discuss the information or make any last comments/questions about your mission before we move on.

I just caught that! I'll just add a little retcon in for roleplaying sake, then.

Maelstrom only visits a spellcasting supplies shop and an alchemist's shop, picking up two scrolls and a healing potion. One of the scrolls goes into a sheath on his wrist, and the potion goes into one of his bandoliers alongside some other vials.

When Nyroba hands the wands to Mael, he nods and slides them into his bandoliers.
I've heard of her. Haven't met her yet though. I did see her in a tavern once, but she looked busy so I just kept to my spellbook.

He digs in his pack for a moment, as if he's actually going to pull out the spellbook in question for proof, then thinks better of it and awkwardly shoves his hands in his pockets.
Thanks for loaning the wands. I won't waste them. I know how expensive they get. Useful ones, though. I'll have to pay you back later if I have to use them.

The small framed man rises, lowers his hood, and looks out over the sea. With the hood down, it's easily noticed that the pale blue markings that swirl and pulse on his skin are more birthmark than tattoo, and if you pay really close attention, they seem to pulse in rythm with the sea breeze.
I hope most of our mission is outdoors. I'm afraid I've been quite spoiled, sailing for most of this assignment so far. I like the outdoors much better than inside. You can't feel the wind inside, you know?

His shock blue eyes take in the ocean sky for a moment, and then he turns to the assignment papers.
So we're going after the chemist first... Any ideas? I can make myself as sneaky or as explosive as we need, as far as spells go. Just make sure no one gets close enough to stab me. I never did get to train in armor, and my people aren't exactly the perfect specimens of physical prowess. Not that if I was it would do any good. Being big and strong doesn't help if you've never worn a cuirass a day in your life, and I haven't. Worn a cuirass, that is. I mean, I've also never been big and strong, but you could already tell that. At least, I think you can. I don't think I look like I've ever been big and strong before, anyway. Well, there was that one time in the Arcane College when that spell went wrong, but that made everyone super-battlerager-y, but that was magic so it doesn't count, right?

He realizes then that he's started nervously rambling again and sits back down, waiting for someone else to break the now-awkward silence.

GM, I added two scrolls of Infernal Healing and a Potion of Cure Light Wounds to my shopping list for this scenario.

Captain Zendrani and the crew of the sleek Sixwing Drake steer the ship up to the massive barrier of broken war-barges, crumbling walls, and jetties of iron and wood that protect the port of Diobel. "Well, here we are," says the captain. "I'll make sure everything is in order with Diobel's inspectors and charter you a barge to the port. You aren't carrying anything particularly valuable, so you shouldn't draw much attention from the inspectors or pilots, so long as you don't run your mouth. My crew and I will wait here with the ship. You can return here to rest, if you need to, but remember, there isn't much time!"

It is just after dawn on Oathday. The Pathfinders follow Delroya's directions to an isolated alley in the Bristles (home to low-rate inns, markets and taverns as well as warehouses and poorer family homes). There they discover an entrance to the sewers beneath Diobel.

Is there anything you'd like to do in Diobel before heading into the sewers, or anything you'd like to do to prepare once you've arrived? I've posted a link to "Table A" maps in my profile, though I haven't loaded up the map yet. Coming soon.

Mael prepares his spells for assaulting, and not so much stealthing, and addresses the group.
I'm ready when you are. I don't have anything left to do to get ready.

Is this really the only way? I just bought this outfit for my society missions... I would hate to get it filthy on my very first one! I mean, not to say I'm not going in if we have too... I'll do whatever the mission requires, but still...

This time, he stops himself before his social awkwardness gets the better of him.

Nyroba chuckles, "You gotta be prepared for anything when you're doing missions for the Society. It's funny how many stories I've heard 'round the Grand Lodge start, 'So there we were, trudging through the sewers...' Besides, ain't you got that spell, Presta-whozits, that lets you clean yourself up?"

Gage gives the sylph a look, shakes his head, and examines the mouth of the sewers for any traps before slipping quietly into the tunnels...

Gage does not find any traps guarding the sewer entrance.

The group climbs a ladder down into the sewers beneath Diobel. The stench of sewage mixes with the sharper odors of chemical fumes and decay and permeates the damp tunnels. From this intersection, tunnels lead west and south into the darkness. A third tunnel heading east is filled with detritus, filthy beddings, food scraps, broken glass, and rotting furniture. An alcove lies beyond a collapsed portion of the tunnel's southern wall, and further east, a statue of a giant rat rests in the dead-end passage. Countless empty flasks and discarded alchemical ingredients lie on the floor around the statue. On a nearby workbench sit several organized but empty flasks and jars.

Four people lie about near the "cave" in the southern wall. They don't seem to notice you. They are delirious, malnourished, and filthy.

I've loaded up the map for this encounter. Please place yourselves and describe your actions. We're not in combat or anything, but it may be important to know where everyone is standing.

Ironically what's kept me from posting was a deadline for another scenario, and I apologize for that. It's done now!

Can't edit the map. Also, can I get a token for my eidolon?

Everyone should be able to edit it now. Is there a particular token you'd like to use?

Now that I can edit the map, I just added my own token for the eidolon.

Aurora's azata slithers down the ladder ahead and keeps an eye out for danger with her bow in hand. Aurora follows behind her trying to keep their movements as quiet as possible.

They both peer into the darkness as Blossom slithers ahead.

But what would that accomplish besides getting sewer filth all ov--

The sylph comes to an abrubt stop when he realizes the intent and meaning behind Drusilla's tease, and his face turns bright red as his mouth opens and closes a few times in astonishment and embarrassment. Suddenly, he becomes very interested in the strap to his wrist sheath, and quickly descends the ladder.
We need to get down there, the venture captains don't want to be kept waiting...

Once down there, he peers at the people on the ground, keeping his spellbook in one hand while the other is outstretched, ready to send his arcane power out.

"Watch the water. Probably not the healthiest to be splooshing around in," Nyroba suggests as she comes down the ladder. She surveys the scene, and mutters, "Alright, Ol' Deadeye, let's see who's hiding something here." Her golden eyes glow brighter, hiding her irises and pupils as she uses her god-given insight to survey the room. Using Detect Magic in the regular way, instead of the special option that Paladins get. 1st round: knowing whether there's an evil aura within the 60 ft cone of effect. 2nd round: Knowing number and strength of the evil auras. 3rd round: Knowing exactly where the auras are. From her position, I believe a cone will encompass both the little nook to the side and the statue at the end of the tunnel. If not, after she scans this direction, she'll move forward next to the guy with bags under his eyes and scan the nook as well.

Gage smiles as he notices all the discarded items around the area. 'Finding something to hurl won't be too difficult at least.' He then approaches one of the first downed individuals and whispers to them. "Oy! What happened 'ere?"

Worth trying..
Says the blonde warrioress with a chuckle as the mage finally realises the meaning of her words.

Drusilla goes down in the sewers, and seems to be determined to do as much noise as possible...

Sorry about that.

FF 1-02

The people in the sewers don't seem to notice you, even with all of Drusilla's noise. When Gage speaks to the man lying on the ground, he slowly turns his head to regard the halfling, and then drops his head back onto his chin and makes a gurgling sound.

Nyroba does not detect anything Evil in the sewers.

Whatcha gonna do?

Gage shakes his head, feeling sorry for the state of these individuals, but he takes a step back. "Dese people be dyin'. Like as not due to dat chemist. I ain't no healer, if anyone is and wants t' help 'em free feel. Otherwise we got someone to hurt."

Aurora shakes her head.

"I'm afraid there isn't much I can do for them, especially in a filthy sewer. It's probably best to finish our business here and then get them to a real healer when we are done."

Both she and Blossom continue to sneak up slowly, their sight piercing any darkness ahead.
