Eponine escorts you from the Flaxseed Lodge to the Grand Lodge, where a conversation is already underway:

I have no love of puns,” announces a peeved Kreighton Shaine, the Master of Scrolls in the Grand Lodge, “Yet it cannot go unremarked that the Overflow Archives have begun living up to their name.” The pale elf gestures across the library’s stone lobby toward a pair of shut double doors from beneath which water steadily seeps. He is only one of the midnight visitors bearing witness to this disaster. Next to Shaine, Paracountess Zarta Dralneen stands with folded arms, glaring at an initiate whose hair and clothes are utterly drenched.

All three speak at once, but Shaine’s shrill voice rises above the din. “Magical shenanigans in the archives are prohibited, especially this soon before the Grand Convocation!

Let us prioritize,” Dralneen suggests. “Are the artifacts within the vaults in danger?

How should I know?” Shaine barks back. “This delinquent initiate— what was the name? Wormell?

Virml, sir,” replies the sodden Pathfinder.

Virml says he sneaked into the archives on a dare,” summarizes Shaine, painfully emphasizing the initiate’s name with scolding disdain. “Presumably, he thought the holdings would be harmless. Instead, in his naivete, Virml triggered some dormant curse or other. So, yes, thanks to Virml here, the archives and the vaults below continue to flood, threatening all the books therein.

Miserably, Virml holds up an armload of soggy manuscripts. “I salvaged a few, sir.

Sighing, Shaine leads Virml towards the stairs. “Take them up to the scriptorium. Start making dry copies.” Then, turning to survey the rest of the room, he continues issuing orders. “The remainder of you should wade in there and plumb the origins of this deluge. Stop it, if you can. I must report this debacle to my colleagues and begin organizing the cleanup.

Abruptly, he seems to notice the paracountess for the first time. “What are you doing here, Dralneen?

Zarta smirks and shrugs. “Unlike you, Shaine, I love a good pun.

Eponine makes a quick apology to the Paracountess for her tardiness, then promptly leaves.

"Ah, let's not go too hard on him," a lovely Qadiran woman says with a soft smile. Her fire-colored red eyes belie her jinn heritage but she looks otherwise human. A slender flute rests on her lap and a delicate veil drapes loosely across the lower half of her face. "Greetings," she says to the other agents summoned to clean up the mess. "My name is Shahrazad. I make my living telling stories and I am told that my words are magical. I do hope I can help."

"Master Shaine," she begins, turning to the Master of Scrolls, "Is there anything we can do to help salvage the books and items as we go? Do you know of anything particularly valuable or dangerous we should look out for?"

Charles Pascal Quillen, first of his name, lounged like a sleepy cat in the sunlight cast through the window into Shaine's office. If it were not for the hat, weapons, armor and haversack, you'd almost mistake him for a cat curled up at Zarta's side.

Then, leaning forward lazily, he takes a last drag from his cigarette and tosses the smoking relic nonchalantly out the window, apparently caring not at what destruction it may cause below.

Shrugging, he stands and reveals the entirety of his frame - nearly 3 feet of honed swordsman. The halfling is impeccably groomed, his moustache neatly trimmed and his curly black hair slicked back and capped with a colorful hat.

Please read all of Quillen's dialogue in a Galtan (French) accent and imagine an even tinier Napolean as he struts about.

"Ah, zis mess. Water, books, relics..."

With a scowl on his face, he leveled his eyes on the other Pathfinders.

"I was zere on ze walls of ze Diamond Zity when ze Demons attacked Mendev, and now... zis? Plumbing work?"

Gazing outside the window off to the distance, he patted his shirt pocket in search of more things to smoke.

"Merde, already?"

Frowning at the failure to find another smoke, his hand wandered to his blade and he gripped the hilt.

"Zere 'ad better be rapid water elementals, otyughs and worse to call Quillen into zis mess. 'is skills are not to be passed about ze Grand Lodge and 'e iz not meant to be fetching wine bottles for old men..."

Dalangi and Zahaz:

The Paraountess briefly holds you back as you begin to file into the Archives, “The Dark Archive thrives by the good graces of the Decemvirate and Ambrus Valsin, yet I can tell that some still doubt our ability to handle truly dangerous relics and the rare disaster like this. As a result, there remain many storerooms barred to our comprehensive study, including the Overflow Archives—until today, that is. It is critical that you minimize the damage to these archives and do so in as professional a manner as possible. If I can demonstrate that my agents are capable and trustworthy, we may win permission to study the truly mysterious treasures beneath the Grand Lodge.

She shrugs and smiles before continuing. “That said, I know that there is more than junk beyond those doors. I’ve heard that someone squirreled away a copy of The Darklands Precepts somewhere in there, and it’s far too dangerous a tome to leave lying about. Get it out of there and return it to me, no matter what excuse Shaine might make to toss it back in the pile.

This spacious library is a damp catastrophe. A lake of dark water clogged with books, scroll cases, and a few overturned shelves obscures the floor. Steps descend into the brine from the western doors, while at the east end of the room a spiral staircase rises from the water to a mezzanine above. The same metal staircase must descend into a basement below as well, for the water there burbles downward in a dark, lazy whirlpool.

There are two birdlike creatures—one owl-faced, the other resembling an albatross—that have converted a mahogany bookshelf into a fishing boat. As the you arrive, the pair are casting their crude fishing rods near the spiral staircase, and the ornery pair seem to be
bickering over whose prize something ought to be.

Looking loser:
This portion contains a disorganized wealth of papers, treatises, baubles, and books, many of which were dislodged by the floodwaters and now drift gently throughout the basement. Except where noted, most of the contents are mundane and of no special value to the
your mission. The room is of superior masonry and has strong wooden doors. The vaulted ceilings are 20 feet high at the walls, rising to 35 feet at their apexes. Across ceilings and around pillars, faded murals feature elaborate patterns interweaving moons, stars, and butterflies. Everburning torches provide normal light, and the many bookshelves here rise about 10 feet in height.

The spiral staircase sits upon an elevated masonry foundation about 1 foot in height, preventing the water from immediately flowing down to the lower level. From there, the stairs rise about 10 feet, likely to another area of the archive, and also descend into the floor.

Zahaz:
Near the northwest corner of the room, a 1-foot-square metal grate provides another outlet for the water, though papers and soggy leather have partly clogged it and prevent the room from draining properly.

Stepping a toe in, Quillen learns the water is about one foot deep, and increases to three feet just before the staircase leading up or down. The current appears to grow much stronger where the whirlpool has formed over the spiral staircase leading down. Luckily, Zahaz' clearing of the drain seems to have helped tame the whirlpool, and the water level is dropping, slowly.

This might indicate the level below is flooding faster.

The two in the boat gladly exchange one item for five, and promptly begin bickering over who gets the spare shining coin.

Shahrazad, Teller of Tales wrote:
In order to read the scroll, Shahrazad casts comprehend languages on herself from a wand. Shah holds up a hand to halt her companions from anything too hasty. These creatures haven't been hostile yet, after all.

This should still be going. If I need to reapply it, just let me know and I'll mark a charge off. It's a full wand so I've got plenty.

Shahrazad completes the exchange and takes a look a the paper. "Does the thing upstairs only speak Sylvan?" she asks them.

If they answer yes, she says, "I have this scroll which will allow all of us to speak with it. But I would like you to come upstairs with us and explain this to the guardian. I don't it to think I'm casting something harmful."

She has a scroll of communal share language.

"You will need us to translate, she is odd. She doesn't remember you." intones the hawk.

"She understands us, she knows more than you do. I think. She knows less though."

"We will translate your speak into fishy speak. Don't upset the sleeper or she will swallow you."

"Swallow yes, but eat no. Be more careful with words."

With that, the odd duo row their book case to the stairs, and ascend about half way. The book case gets sucked into the whirlpool and begins circling the drain.

Other than the three likely scrolls, nothing else other than generic mundane items, books, scroll cases, papers, and the like. Nothing that would have caused such a calamity is apparent here.

Shahrazad:
The scrolls are of bull’s strength, comprehend languages. and of daylight.

Dalangi stares at the crazed birds in stunned silence. What kind of a place did the Mistress call me to? First she sets me in with Boogeymen, children and now talking birdmen.

Moving from bookshelf to bookshelf the young wayang makes his way to the whirlpool leading down. He picks up a few of the scraps of paper floating about, looking over them momentarily.

Deciding the papers are not worth the effort he descends quickly down the stairs below.

Shahrazad shares the scrolls with the rest of the party. The scrolls are of bull’s strength, comprehend languages, and of daylight. Anyone want to claim them?

Shahrazad follows the two creatures to the stairs to meet this guardian creature.

Anyone else want to take the lead talking to this thing? I don't want to take over too much here, I feel like I'm doing all the talking.

Dalangi:
Flooding from the library above has turned this storage chamber into a treacherous bog. Rising above the black lake, the flat tops of many rows of shelves create a makeshift maze of causeways. A spiral staircase descends from above, a deluge of water
cascading down the steps. Four narrow corridors channel rivers of seawater off into the darkness.

The floor of this room is flooded to the point of being a deep bog, and the ceiling is 15 feet high. The shelves here are broad enough to act as walkways, requiring no Acrobatics check to traverse while moving at half speed and only a successful DC 5 Acrobatics check to walk along at full speed.

A very large decrepit bird is chasing after an equally large and bizarre worm.

Perception Bird : 1d20 + 10 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 10 - 4 - 4 = 9
Perception Worm: 1d20 + 10 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 10 - 4 - 4 = 11

You feel as though you may have been noticed by the strange pair, but their attention is far more fixed on their merry chase about the room.

Not too fun mechanical stuff (but please read anyhow):

The down-stairs is a deep bog:

Bogs: If a square is part of a shallow bog, it has deep mud or standing water of about 1 foot in depth. It costs 2 squares of movement to move into a square with a shallow bog, and the DC of Acrobatics checks in such a square increases by 2.

A square that is part of a deep bog has roughly 4 feet of standing water. It costs Medium or larger creatures 4 squares of movement to move into a square with a deep bog, or characters can swim if they wish. Small or smaller creatures must swim to move through a deep bog. Tumbling is impossible in a deep bog.

The water in a deep bog provides cover for Medium or larger creatures. Smaller creatures gain improved cover (+8 bonus to AC, +4 bonus on Reflex saves). Medium or larger creatures can crouch as a move action to gain this improved cover. Creatures with this improved cover take a –10 penalty on attacks against creatures that aren't underwater.

Deep bog squares are usually clustered together and surrounded by an irregular ring of shallow bog squares.

Both shallow and deep bogs increase the DC of Stealth checks by 2.

As Shahrazad begins to head up the stairs after your newly proclaimed translators and guides, the small wayang, Dalangi, begins to follow the desk down the stairs.

Frowning, he begins to make his way across the room to the spiral stairs, leaping as necessary from bookcase to desk to shelf to spare himself the indignity of swimming in water deeper than himself.

Acrobatics +13, so I imagine taking 10 for 23 will get him pretty much anywhere without any major risk of said indignity.

As he reaches the spiral stairs, he narrows his eyes scanning the floors beyond as well.

Does this single staircase go both up and down?

@Shahrazad: I'm fine with you taking point on talking.

When it becomes clear the party is following the birds up the stairs, Zahaz moves to follow, splashing library water carelessly as he kicks through it. Though he seems heavily armored, he moves as if unencumbered. "We shall see who eats whom. Samaeon, come!"

"Yes, master." Samaeon slips into the water and follows at a distance.

Reaching the top of the stairs you spot something rather strange looking. Rather akin to a four eyed carp crossed with an old one, or possibly an octopus. The creature seems to be ignoring you as it belches up several hundred gallons of water, which rushes past you and down the stairs.

The duo immediately begin to babble at the creature, and it seems to be speaking back.

Shahrazad:
"These funny looking things want to find the smarty-pants cat-dog thing I think" explains the hawk headed creature.

"I will flood him out eventually little ones, be patient."

Another wash of water flows out of the creature and down the stairs.

The creature blinks, clearly not understanding your words. Luckily you have translators.

Those who speak Sylvan:

"This is a lady with a hard name to say who makes up stuff to make people happy. I think she is like the evil trickster, but not evil. She wants to know what to call you."

"No, she clearly said her name is sahara bad, and she retells ticks, she doesn't make tricks. She does want to know your name though.

The strange creature answers, "I am Mistress Koi. It was my duty to keep the smarty-pants dog-cat in his place. He tricked me and I did not like it, some magical ruse no doubt. If you can catch him without. . . no that cannot be right. We need the riddle back. The Fey riddler made me and those things I swallowed. I think. I don't remember. These two I do not know. What I know is we need the riddle again to put that tricky one back."

"She forgets things, but she wants a riddle."

Again is Sylvan:

"The soft looking one wants the water to stop so we can't go fishing for anymore paper. They seem to think it causes harm. Don't worry though, it is fun to fish. You made the best fishing hole ever!"

"I think they are worried that the water makes ink run not that the fishing hole is bad. Anyhow, they want you to stop making water."

Mistress Koi listens patiently and explains, "I need the tricky one caught. If they can catch him, I will stop the water, and put it back where it came from."

"She will destroy our fishing hole if you catch the one who needs caught."
"She doesn't know what ought to be caught"

"She might be lying. Everyone knows the cat-dog that ought to be caught. She weaves stories like the smarty-pants." the owl complains.

Mistress Koi interrupts the two again, "Tell them that whatsisname -- that dreadful haughty fox, tricked the fey riddler. He made all of us, the Name of the Fox is our place and the tricksy one is stuck there. He escaped. Most likely a trick of some sort. We need the scroll back to catch the one who needs caught. I will swallow the water back if they catch."

"Yes." the duo answer in unison.

Sylvan one last time!:

"The one that scares us says she tells stuff right."

The hawk headed one nods, "Ones that big don't lie. They don't need to, they just eat you if they think they need to."

"I think you are right, and I never think you are right, the owl nods.

"That only leads creedence to what I have decided. They can catch the fox for me and I will stop the waters." Mistress Koi nods in agreement with the smaller creatures' assessment.

"You can catch it, no more water."

"Not catch it, stupid. She wants the riddle not the one who escaped the riddle." the owl corrects.

"Right, the riddle ought to catch the one who ought to be caught but is not caught because of some trick of the riddle, or something else." the hawk nods.
