Silver Crusade

Weeks have passed since Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith departed for the Bandu Hills, and having not heard from him since but learned of an Aspis Consortium expedition bound for the same destination, the Society and local allies have grown worried for the aging explorer’s safety. As the PCs travel south on Sharrowsmith’s trail, they must track the venture-captain to the ruins he sought while also dealing with the aftermath of his actions.

“On Sharrowsmith’s Trail” is the first scenario in the three-part Scions of the Sky Key campaign arc. It is followed by Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–14: Scions of the Sky Key, Part 2: “Kaava Quarry” and Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–16: Scions of the Sky Key, Part 3: “The Golden Guardian.” All three chapters are intended to be played in order.

Content in “On Sharrowsmith’s Trail” also contributes directly to the ongoing storylines of the Exchange faction.

Thistlebane, welcome!

Guys, I know Thistlebane from my local lodge. He's an awesome guy! He'll bring a lot of character to the group. I think he and Dydimus will get along fabulously. :-)

Thistlebane, see how the others have summary stats below their characters? Could you please add stats to your character over the next few days? Add them to the "Classes/Levels" line in your character profile. Thanks! :-)

I read some of the PbP general FAQ threads, so hopefully I will be able to pick the nuances up as we go along. I'm still looking in to a few things like dice commands. Thank you for the offer of help -- as things come up, I will try to post my questions over in the discussion thread so as not to distract from the gameplay. Thanks again.

I'm glad you brought it up -- I've been trying to change my avatar since last week, but whenever I go to the "change message board settings" or "edit message board" commands I get redirected to a 404 error page. I can change the avatar for my main account, and have done so, but it won't let me do the same for the aliases.

I'm just trying to use one of the three female gunslinger avatars. Has anyone been having the same issue or is it just me?

Let's start now... :-) You begin in the Mwangi expanse, in Nantambu, where Society ally Aya Allahe meets with you.

__________
Briefing:
The reputable merchant and ally of the Society Aya Allahe paces one of the back rooms of Sharrowsmith’s Exports, a walled trade compound on the northern edge of Nantambu in the Mwangi Expanse.

“I wish I had more to offer,” Allahe apologizes before even presenting what information she has. “Nieford Sharrowsmith never truly retired from being a Pathfinder, even after he started this business. I think, in his mind, he was still the young adventurer that hiked through jungles and fought off troglodyte tribes. Sharrowsmith’s attitude changed over the last few months—I think he was concerned for his legacy and how history would remember him. Would it be for his discoveries or for the export business that dominated his later years? The answer, I fear, was unpalatable.

“It was no surprise when he packed up and left on an expedition. But that was months ago, and neither the Society nor I have heard from him since. Sharrowsmith has never left for this long without leaving some word as to his status or sending rather demanding missives about business decisions while he was waist-deep in some jungle bog. When my own contacts failed to turn up any useful information, I had no recourse but to go through his private notes.” Allahe motions to the mess of documents scattered about the office.

“What caught my eye was this translated rubbing. It appears to be the most recent piece of a very large puzzle Sharrowsmith was researching and indicated that he may be somewhere in the Bandu Hills. Traders from Fort Bandu have confirmed that he paid the garrison a visit, but that’s where my trail ran cold. Something happened out there, and Praetor Sylien—Fort Bandu’s commander—refuses to correspond with me on the matter despite knowing how close Nieford and I are. All I received in response was that Nieford had ‘done enough damage for one lifetime,’ and that if I wanted to discuss the matter further I would need to go to Fort Bandu in person.” Exasperatedly, Allahe runs a hand across her forehead and turns her distant stare out the window. “I cannot shutter the business and travel hundreds of miles on the off chance that the praetor can help; the company would fall apart. I’m hoping that you will be able to go in my stead, speak with the praetor personally to learn what has befallen Sharrowsmith and help him return.”

__________

She hands you the translated copy from Sharrowsmith's notes:

Handout 1:
...and with this engraving, we commit to the histories the dounding of Ashkurhall. Here we will strike the stone in memory of our ancestors and the promise of the sky that was taken from us. So far we have traveled and so long we have sought stone to call our home. In the shadow of the mountain the humans call Nakyuk, we will build a new future for...

"We are eager to assist you in this endeavor," responds one of the Pathfinders.

Now in his late forties, the man is tall, blonde, and handsome, and despite being past his prime, looks like he ought to be out saving princesses and slaying dragons. His dirty blonde hair is bound into three long braids.

The broad-shouldered paladin seems a warrior's warrior. His armor and weapons are mismatched, the pieces coming from a dozen different lands and cultures; yet worn by the man, they seem natural.

Well Meet! I am Sir Dydimus of Eastgate and this is my faithful companion Ambrosius. We will brave the treacherous jungles and bring back your Nieford Sharrowsmith! What a grand adventure it shall be and what fine company we have! It is great to see all of you again my friends! sweeping off his jaunty feather cap, the hansom halfling gives those assembled a deep bow. He stops suddenly and gives Hotspur a double take before walking up to her, I don't believe we've meet. As I'm sure you've guessed I am the one and only Sir Dydimus of Eastgate, Explorer Extraordinaire!

Silver Crusade

Oh, yes. Ethendril and Dydimus. And you two are Cornelia and Olga. Venture Captain Dreng told me about you. He sent these along from Absalom via special courier.

Aya Allahe opens a very large chest next to her desk. Immediately, the smell of hot apple biscuits, warm cinnamon, and fresh butter fills the room. The chest magically kept the biscuits as hot and fresh as they were the moment they left the oven!

That must make you, Hotspur. Yes? I was told that you'd be coming along, too. But the Venture Captain didn't know much about you.

At this point, the remaining players are welcome to introduce themselves, in character.

Everyone is welcome to ask Aya Allahe any questions. After you're done with her, you'll have he opportunity to purchase supplies.

You recognize that the magic used on this chest is a variation on something that Ambrus Valsin was testing (in scenario #6-11: The Slave Master's Mirror). There's an extradimensional space inside; it holds far more apple biscuits than it should!

The young Chelish woman then looks at their newest member, Hotspur, with her hands clasped together in front of her. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lady Hotspur." She smiles. "That is quite the interesting name, I do hope that you might share the tale..." Her voice trails off at the sudden and wondrous smell that fills the room. Her stomach suddenly growls and she looks mortified as she bashfully adds. "Pardon me..."

The young woman takes a hesitant step forward to acquire a few biscuits, not realizing just how hungry she was until that moment. She relishes the first bite, savoring the steaming cinnamon after dining on trail rations for the past several weeks of her trip. "Oh my... I do so love magic." She winks at Sir Dydimus as she reaches over to ruffle his hat.

"Sir Dydimus! I'm sure I would have guessed you were yourself had you given me a little more time. I was close to figuring it out, I think... However," a crafty look crosses Hotspur's face, "Would you be able to tell us something only the real Sir Dydimus would know? An unfortunate, but I feel necessary, precaution. I have recently heard someone in a tavern saying that our ranks have been infested with Dopplegangers, and, as he was not completely drunk, I found him quite credible."

With that, Hotspur turns her attention to Aya Allahe and explains, "In truth, there is little to be said about me at this point. I'm still building my field experience but I have read all the important works: Fritz Weber's Proletariat Manifesto, John Lush's writings on the Social Contract, Freedom and Revolution for Dummies. Wherever Nieford Sharrowsmith may be, I will LIBERATE him! In short..."

“Hotspur, at your service.”
The young woman snaps an excessively violent salute that quickly becomes a self-conscious eyebrow rub.

She wears an old uniform stripped of insignia and displays of rank – though silhouettes of missing patches are still visible on the faded cloth. Her hair is closely cropped, and was likely completely shaved within the past few months. Lingering powder burns color her right cheek, and the heavy kohl she liberally applies to reduce glare gives her eyes a hunted and furtive look. The only thing about her that appears well cared for is her remarkably clean and very large musket.

In short, she looks as though she has recently been dishonorably discharged from an army or an asylum.

"Is there any information on the general scope of Sharrowsmith's recent research or his particular focus that might be helpful?"

Silver Crusade

Aya nods back at Cornelia. The golden-eyed aasimar helps herself to an apple biscuit too, and muses: "I don't know much about this translated piece. Sharrowsmith's notes say the rubbing was made by miners in the Bandu Hills over sixty years ago, and the rubbing found its way to him through auctions he frequented. Whatever he read there, it lit a fire under him."

"Oh, look! Your venture captain was kind enough to send along mulled cider too!" She opens a jug and pours it into mugs for everyone.
____________________________________________________________

Aya's golden eyes soften as she addresses the gunslinger: "I don't know much about Sharrowsmith's recent research, Hotspur. I was his business partner; his other interests were only tangentially related to our work together. However, in his youth, I understand that he always traveled alone. Now, though, with his bad back, he needs teamsters to carry equipment and scribes to help with field research. It is quite out of character for Sharrowsmith to embark without staff. I think he felt like he had something to prove."

"I must thank them greatly for this treat. Do you know perhaps any particular knowledge Sharrowsmith was researching at the time which may have caused such a response? Also, what can you tell us about where we are headed? Are there any particular dangers of which we aught to be aware?"

The rubbing was made in the Bandu Hills. You may want to start there. But beware! That is a dangerous place. This is true of much of the Expanse, but the Bandu Hills have a dozen ways to kill before accounting for living creatures: heat, dehydration, landslides, poisonous plants, carnivorous plants, and so on. Unfortunately, the place is sick with riches like diamonds, gold, and silver—an embarrassment of wealth that only attracts more dangerous occupants. I am surprised that Sharrowsmith didn’t settle down there, to be honest.

Forcing down a giant swallow, with the aid of some cider he This is Fascinating! to think anyone of us could be a shapechanger just waiting to strike! he takes another long draw off of his cider and munches thoughtfully. Perhaps that's why Sharrowsmith has disappeared! He got too close the truth! How we will know its really him when we find him? How do we know that when we get back you'll still be you!?! How will you know that when we return we'll really be us!?! Perhaps we should think of a code word! No, that wouldn't work since Sharrowsmith doesn't know it. We could tell him but how does he know that we are us and not someone else and they could give him the wrong code and when we, I mean them, get back here and they give you the wrong password how will you know that we aren't really us but he is really him!?! And what if we get back and give you the right password but you're not really you and then we give you, I mean them, the wrong password and then they could become us! UNLESS! What if they become us and then come back here and you are not you but one of them, but they don't know that you are not you, and they give you the wrong password but you, I mean them, then gets the wrong password but thinks its the right password, and then we come back, not them us but us us, and then we give the right password to the wrong people who think that it is the wrong password because of the other uses?!? Catching his breath he downs another biscuit in one gulp, starts to choke, and the recovers Wow that was close! I almost died before the mission even started and all because of an apple biscuit! So, what where we talking about?

"I do not think that a lack of vigilance will be a fault of this group," Ethendril observes.

"Perhaps we should not get ahead of ourselves. Should there be any concern over doppelgangers infiltrating our ranks, I have heard that they will not touch an apple biscuit. In that manner we will be able to unveil them," the paladin says with a slight smile.

Aya smiles: "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect, Sir Dydimus."

It looks like nobody has knowledge geography, so... If you take 10, you could know:

Thanks to the rocky terrain and bright sun, the daytime temperature of the Bandu Hills can sometimes reaches lethal extremes. Fort Bandu is the only major settlement for miles, and serves to protect the prospectors in the region.

When Hotspur mentions Nakyuk aloud, Aya offers: "One of the highest points in the Bandu Hills is Mount Nakyuk, famed for its veins of gold."

They truly are evil Sir Dydimus says with a shudder.

"Indeed," Aya agrees as she refills the halfling's mug.

"Good point, Sir Dydimus! We will have to keep a weather-eye open for treachery. I can think of no further questions, myself, but the better informed we are, the safer we'll be." Hotspur takes out a small notebook. "I'll just make some notes regarding my equipment for the journey..."

Hotpsur begins to scribble in an eccentric code:

No sign of poison. YET.
Sir Dydimus ??? Thought he would be shorter.
Cornelia -- has many questions. Does she have answers? Who is she really working for?
Olga -- the unknown quantity
Ethendril -- knows a lot about Dopplegangers. Eager for everyone to eat apple biscuits. Why??? Part of the conspiracy?????
Sharrowsmith's disappearance. False flag operation? If so, by whom?
Consider getting wand of Endure Elements.

Olga grunts, pops 3 apple biscuits in her mouth, and looks at Ethendril, I've been working out. I'll keep up with you this time, old man. She tries to smile, but she's never sure whether the look comes off as friendly as it is intended.

Pleasant to make your acquaintance, Hotsie.

She'll take a few more apple biscuits, Can anyone create water? I'm not keen on dehydration.

After cleaning out the bottom of the chest of apple biscuits, What about one of those magic wands for endure elements so we aren't too affected by the potential heat?

Thanks, Ethendril! I can't wait to see the trouble we can all get into.

"You read my mind, Olga" says Hotspur as she tries to shield her thoughts more completely in the future -- maybe some sort of metallic hat would help. I have a bit of credit 2 Prestige Points and if possible, I thought I might try to get a Wand of Endure Elements for communal use. You know what they say: 'From each according to her ability, to each according to her need!'"

I was originally going to buy a wand of cure light, but it sounds like endure elements might be more useful. If the purchase is okay, then I invite everyone else to take hits off the wand as needed. So, as a group, we probably don't need more than one.

I've got a cure light we can all share as needed, but I think there are some other healy-folks in the group, at least, I know we didn't die in the last The Godsmouth Heresey.
