After the briefest respite, the Pathfinders once again seem themselves out on another mission for the society. It seems that the venture captains are over stretched at the moment as they are sending teams all over Gorlaion to put of small fires. The Society's enemies are slowly multiplying, looking for any sign of weakness.

As the approach Sothis, they are reminded of the cities grand history. As Osirion’s first major city, ancient capital of the legendary Pharaoh Azghaad, and current capital of a resurgent nation and
people, Sothis displays the legacy of its nearly mythical past alongside its current wonders as a seamless and astounding whole.

Making their way to Sandswept Hall, the Pathfinder Lodge in Sothis. As they enter the city their eyes are drawn inexorably towards the Black Dome. The Black Dome is a glittering, iridescent black carapace of a singularly titanic scarab beetle. Both the royal palace and the fabulous estates of many of its noble elite, the Black Dome is the oldest and certainly most unique structure in the city.

The Pathfinders also notice nine carved white sphinx statues lining the quarter-mile road leading to the Malhitu Bazaar's first gate. After their briefing they may want to visit it hawkers to equip themselves for their upcoming mission.

Sadly they continue their trek, fearful of arriving late. They all to familiar dealings with Vaslin have thought them the necessities of arriving promptly.

As they reach Sandswept Hall, they are ushered upstairs to meet Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir.

Balentiir shutters of the windows in his second-story office overlooking the lodge’s tranquil gardens and seats himself behind his writing desk. He nods and introduces a thin, aging Garundi man in an ornately bejeweled and feathered turban.

“This is Amenopheus, the Sapphire Sage. I trust most of you know of him already. If you don’t, know that he has served both the Ruby Prince and the Pathfinder Society for many years, uncovering vast troves of lore from Ancient Osirion and mentoring some of our finest agents. He recently approached
my colleagues and me with a request for assistance, and the Society has agreed to step up and aid its ally. The arrangement is, in fact, rather mutually beneficial.”
He nods to Amenopheus, signaling the elder man to speak.

“Faithful servants of the past, I bid you greetings,” the wizened sage says with a shallow bow. “Our esteemed ruler, the Ruby Prince, recently released me from his service, which has freed me to learn more about a little-known organization to which I belong: the Jeweled Sages, protectors of Osirion’s history and chroniclers of its past glories. Quite by accident, I found myself initiated into this group, and have long believed myself to be its sole surviving member. Each sage in the group possesses a unique jewel—a priceless artifact that contains memories of Osirion’s golden age.” He pauses as if considering how to express his thoughts.

“For many years, I have sought news of any other members of the Jeweled Sages. My agents recently learned of the Diamond Sage, whom they traced to the city of Eto in the Osirian Desert.

"At the same time, I received word from a reliable source that several other jewels in the vicinity. I ask that you travel to Eto, negotiate with my contact in the city for his assistance, and then use what you learn to find the Diamond Sage and these lost jewels.”

Venture-Captain Balentiir frowns and adds, “This contact has tried to remain anonymous, but we suspect he is none other than Grandmaster Torch. If you’ve heard of him—or worse, met him—you may know trading favors is his signature. Regardless of Torch’s past treacheries, we need you to deal with him fairly for the information.

"There is a caravan leaving for Eto in a few hours, so don’t delay.”

Before the Pathfinders depart or can ask any questions, Amenopheus pulls a weathered stone from his robes and strikes it once against the wall to break the stone into two crystalline geode halves. He hands
one piece to the Pathfinders, instructing them, “If you find one of the jewels of my order or the person known as the Diamond Sage, I ask that you contact me. Concentrate on the stone and speak a message of a few dozen words. I will hear you and respond with further instructions. It will only work once, so keep it safe.”

Feel free to ask any questions. Once you are done you can grab any last minute supplies or get them in Eto, then you head out to meet that caravan.

"Amenopheus, it is being pleasure to be meeting of you," Xûll bows deeply, "Me is to have been hearing many wondrous things of your prowesses. Please, be telling us what we can be using for dealings with Torch... and also, anything you can about this 'Diamond Sage'."

Xûll bows low in his best imitation of the manner in which they bow in Osirion.

Having been through this before, Luna stays obediently behind her master, turning on his heel as he moves about the room. She begins to drool a little bit, expecting the treats he holds in his pouch at any minute.

A little bribery for good behavior never hurt anyone...

In moments she is rewarded for her patience, and a treat is offered on a gauntleted hand. Luna then hears the command to lie down, so she obliges. With a flop, she curls up on the floor, tucking her muzzle beneath one of her paws and closing her eyes.

As the intro goes on, Warpac is constantly fiddling with his axe, spinning it this way and that, occasionally thumping the butt against whatever is available. He does not even seem to notice that he is doing it, in spite of the annoyed glances in his direction. Though his eyes may sparkle a bit at the mention of jewels, he seems a bit more restrained than most when it comes to the subject. Besides an occasional grunt, he waits politely for the others to ask their questions and says nothing.

Before the briefing begins:

A tall elf strides in wearing a long cloak of the sort the locals often wear when traveling through the desert. Although it is a typically hot day, he is not sweating, his long blond hair hanging dry along his neck. Removing his traveling cloak, others can see the accouterments of a wizard, with pouches of spell components, a number of scroll tubes, potions vials, and a wand, but no armor. He sets his weapons on a table: a dagger, light mace, longsword, and longbow. The longsword looks particularly well made. Around his waist is a bulky sash that turns out to actually be a way for his pet otter to travel with him. He sets out some water and food for the curious creature and commands it to stay. Then he joins the other Pathfinders, introducing himself, "Hail and well-met Pathfinders. I am Tûrin Valpamiucon of Kyonin."

An Osirian servant asks Toorin if he can get him anything to eat or drink, to which Toorin replies, "وبعض الماء والخبز يخدم معي بشكل جيد. شكرا."

Orisiani:
Some water and bread will serve me well. Thank you.

After the mission instructions:

Toorin asks, "Thank you for the opportunity to serve the mutual benefit of the Ruby Prince and the Pathfinder Society. Are there any special features of the jewels holding these treasure-holds of lore that distinguish them from ordinary gemstones or any way to tell if one who claims to be a jeweled sage is in fact what he claims to be?"

At the start of the briefing:

Entering the Venture Captain's chambers is a short bronze skinned Varisian man wearing light brown trousers and a sleeveless and-coloured tunic, a thin sash around his waist serves as a belt. His only nod to wealth is the bow on his back, a masterpiece of Darkwood engraved with a Tien dragon, a quiver sits on his hip and another slung on his shoulder, opposite the bow. He drops his backpack in the corner and takes a low formal bow, in Osirion fashion.

"Greetings all, my name is Amarok Sandstrider, born to Varisian travellers but raised in the Tar Kuata monastery. I am an archer by profession, I am happy to act as a scout if it is required."

He listens patiently and quietly to the briefing, absorbing all the information given by the honoured sage, along as all the questions asked by his fellow agents.

After the Briefing:

"No questions I can think of, I have a few things to buy however. The Desert is a harsh place for those unprepared."

He turns to Túrin and gives a short polite bow,

"You seem to hold the accoutrements of a Wizard, so forgive me if you are not. But If I were to buy a scroll of Mage Armour and one of Endure Elements, would you cast them upon me?"

The silver-haired, heavily muscled dog snaps from her dreaming and jumps to a standing position. She circles Pooka twice before plopping her rump down in the heel position on his left flank. She opens her mouth, appearing ever so much to smile, while her tongue hangs out the right side and she pants to rid herself of her internal heat.

She eyes Pooka as he drops a piece of folded leather, and unfurls it to the shape of a bowl, and pours some water from one of his waterskins into it. Her panting tongue reaches out and laps up the offered water, spraying droplets everywhere in the near vicinity.

With the simple ritual complete, the dog looks around the room to see the newcomers that appeared during her nap. All at once she locks eyes with the otter, and her tail begins to wag furiously.

It looks like a squirrel. Thats the biggest squirrel I have ever seen. I want to chase it. I wonder what it smells like. This is the best day of my life.

Amenopheus and Balentiir exchange a quick look, before the Venture-Captain begins to speak.

“I think you are too focused on the climate, and not focused enough on your true enemy. We expect all our Pathfinder teams to be prepared for adverse conditions and I trust you are all well equipped.

"You don't seem to have a lot of questions about Grandmaster Torch. Just so we are all clear, the man is a charming devil to be sure. He always plays one side of a deal against the other, and usually ends up ahead. You’ll recognize him by his burn scars. He suffered some injury that never seems to heal. Whatever you do, never fully trust him.”

Amenopheus says, “He is staying at the House of the White Uraeus, a fancy inn that caters to those in need of healing and rest."

“Feel free to remind him of the favor still owed to me for past assistance in his grand endeavor. He will know what you mean.”

Let me know if you have additional questions before we move to Eto tonight or tomorrow.

Balentiir nods in understanding. “I assure that much of the Society shares your feelings; however, Torch has leverage that we would rather he not use against us. Any violence directed toward him would be revisited on us a hundredfold, so don’t be selfish. Save your vendettas for another day.”

Pooka looks a bit sheepish as the group speaks about this Torch person, someone whom he has had no dealings with. "You have me a bit paranoid now, venture-captain. I almost expect now that Torch will be asking us to assassinate someone for him knowing he has us by the short and curlies, if you know what I mean."

Pooka instantly looks ashamed, speaking out in such a way in front of the proper sapphire sage.

"Aside from favors, is there anything in particular about Torch that might help ease the situation, or the inevitable trading information for favors? Perhaps he is at this White Uraeus because of his scars? Or even better, if he is a broker of information, perhaps there is some information we could bring to him to trade, instead of indebting ourselves to him?" Pooka has begun to think out loud instead of asking specific questions.

"Apologies, perhaps some of that is better left for when we arrive."

Wow - way to start off everyone! Loving this and I hope it continues. A few side notes - let's save info on Eto for once we reach it. There isn't a normal Gather Info/Kn Local like normal scenarios. Also the VC and Amenopheus have arranged transport from Sothis to Eto on a camel caravan. Feel free to bring your mount if you like. Lastly, there is nothing written in the scenario, nor have I found any info on determining whether a jewel is fake or not. Great questions, but for now don't fret. Will move this along shortly, feel free to stock up before we leave. Remember you can by until the first encounter. And thanks for the attention to detail updating taglines!!

The Pathfinders exit the lodge and head towards the market where they meet Master Al'Far. A plump man dressed in the desert fashion, you can see him directing porters loading camels. The large animals slowly chew their cud, turning right and left but mostly ignoring the porters loadthing their humped back with heavily bundled goods.

He pauses as he sees them approach, before giving the porter he is speaking to one last set of instructions. Waddling out to meet them, he bows before addressing them. "Welcome to my humble caravan. I understand that you will be accompanying me to Eto. We make this journey often and I expect little trouble. Yet one never knows." he laughs without mirth, hand washing his dried and cracked hands. "I expect less trouble with you along, I pray Desna! Come, lend a hand and we may depart all the sooner."

Pooka makes his way through the bazaars as he and his companions do a little shopping before meeting up with Master Al'Far.

"Yes sir. Scrolls. Uh-huh. Sure, I'll repeat. bull's strength, two. endure elements, two. I realize it is a priest's spell, but an align weapon would round out the order nicely. Good, of course." Pooka winks at the snake oil salesman.

At the caravan

"To bad there isn't something I could give to Luna to help her run through the sand better. At least we will have water and magical protection from the hot sun. It is a pleasure to meet you Master Al'Far. Hopefully our trip is both quick, and without trouble." Pooka smiles and bows, and moves to help with the manual labor to assist in getting the procession started.

Scrolls listed above. Almost out of gold. Should be good to go. I hope.

"Desna!" he declares in his gravelly dwarven voice. "Fancy that! I am a humble priest of Desna. And you, lucky man, just earned yourself a blessing!" With that he lays his hands on the man and delivers a Lucky Presence blessing on the fortunate man. He also gives himself the same blessing.

Warpac is no stranger to caravans, having been afflicted with the burden of wanderlust. It is typical for him to pass blessings out among caravan guards (or PCs), particularly those that also worship Desna or are like minded.

Lucky Presence: Touch an ally and grant it a lucky presence. The target of this luck can call upon it to roll any one ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check twice and take the better result. The decision to use this benefit must be declared before the roll is made. Once used, or once 1 minute passes, the effect ends.

If you worship Desna, it would behoove you to mention it.

"A dwarven priest of Desna, eh? Certainly not the strangest thing I have heard. I myself say a few prayers to the drunken god when things get tight, though I have been known to whisper a prayer to the butterfly goddess as well. Did you know they were lovers? At least that's the rumor." Pooka smiles and claps Warpac on the shoulder.

"Yes, well, I am a bit unusual for a dwarf at that. Some say I was touched, or more, by the fey at birth. I don't doubt it! I love the wild as much as the underground, can't seem to stay in one place for long, and for some reason healing spells affect me more than others!"

Toorin listens with interest as other Pathfinders talk about their chosen deities.

"I revere Yuelral, the elven goddess of magic," he says, pulling forth a jeweled amulet from under his robe. It consists of three uncut gems, red, green, and blue, crossing and surrounded by a golden band. He kisses the amulet before returning it beneath his robes. "But I honor all the gods who support the needs of good people everywhere, such as Desna and Cayden Cailean." Glancing around the bazaar, pointing at some of the more obvious religious shrines, he adds, "Osirion seems to have a healthy mix of faiths."

To Korasu, Toorin says, "I look forward to learning more about your culture and religion. I was on a number of Pathfinder missions with another Tengu, but he was a taciturn fellow who said little about such things. Ran with a paladin of Sarenrae as well, which was interesting."

Once at the caravan, Toorin attends to his mount and fills his water skins. The talk about religion inspires him to purchase a vial of holy water from a priest of Sarenrae.

In light of the discussion about the blessings only lasting 1 minute.

"You know, Warpac, I've always said it's better to be lucky than good. And I've always wanted to try this..."

"Let's go Luna!" Pooka shouts with a smile, clapping his hands and running along the Caravan's length as fast as his stubby little legs will carry him. Luna lopes alongside of her master, head turned to look at him and tongue hanging out.

"Ready... Now!" The little halfling grabs the dogs harness, then plants his feet into the ground, hard. The extra momentum from the dog's speed launches him into the air. For a moment, Pooka's heart stops, wondering if he can stick the landing...

Pooka feels as though he is floating in the air, in perfect balance. The halfling comes down with two feet on top of the saddle, standing proudly on top of his trusty steed while she runs down the street. With a smile, Pooka hops and spreads his legs, landing his rump back in its appropriate place in the saddle, and wheels Luna back around to his companions.

"Halfling luck, or Desna's luck? I'd say the two were meant to be together. For a second there, I was almost as tall as you Xull! Ha!" he smiles and laughs as they finish the perparations of the convoy.

Toorin smiles and then laughs at the sight of the halfling cavalierly racing through the bazaar (pun intended:). A stately elf woman arrests her stride to let the pair race by. Toorin snaps to attention and then begins to move through the crowd, trying to get a better look at her. Once loaded, the eight camels and twice that many porters, begin the trek west across the River Styx.

When reaching the western banks, they continue over the Sahure Wastes on a south-western course. The dry heat, added to the lack of available water only increases the Pathfinders desire to take a cool, refreshing drink rather than swish some tepid water in their mouths. Though there is plenty of water, and Al'Far is a master of finding dug wells, and shaded areas to rest, they never feel as if their thirst is satiated.

Overall the journey passes without event. The camels make great time during the day, and the nights are spent swapping stories near the camp fire.

Along the way, Master Al'Far continues to educate the Pathfinders on their destination. Sorry to be heavy handed with this.

A central point along the trade routes from Thuvia, and from Shiman-Sekh to Sothis, the city of Eto has seen its fortunes rise in recent years as foreign trade has waxed, first under the reign of Khemet I and continuing with his son the Crocodile King and currently the Ruby Prince.

The city’s residents and its merchant elite would have been overjoyed by that alone, but in the last year they have seen their coffers swell as Eto has become a nexus for adventurers seeking to explore Osirion’s central deserts. With the ingress of native and foreign treasure hunters alike, the population has risen with a concurrent influx of laborers, tradesman, and merchants eager to supply the explorers with everything they might need, as well as many luxuries they don’t.

Similar to the events in Sothis since Khemet III’s announcement opening the deserts to foreign exploration, the situation has benefited the city greatly, but brings risks as well as rewards.

Not a day goes by without trade caravans and parties of adventurers arriving at the city gates with horses and camels loaded with treasures from the depths of the desert. While dozens of merchant houses have joined those already plying the interior trade routes and gold-hungry mercenaries flock to exploit the desert’s buried wealth, bandits and less archaeologically adept adventurers have taken to raiding excavations in progress as well as targeting poorly defended merchant caravans.

Before they know it, the caravan arrives at Eto. The Pathfinders gaze at the immense rock walls that ring Eto rising from the horizon like a shimmering mirage that gradually harpens into focus. The city sits inside an elevated crater with sheer, weathered sides broken only in two places by heavily guarded gates. Long lines of caravans wait in a meandering queue awaiting entrance as officials search their cargos for contraband and calculate taxes. Water sellers, food vendors, and guides march up and down the lines peddling their wares and services to the visitors. Beyond the gates, the main thoroughfares fan out around the various districts of the city before dwindling into the dozens of pathways that flow through the bazaar like the delta of the great River Sphinx.

Please describe how you approach the city including any SOP you want to make.

Master Al'Far runs a hand over his shaved head. "My Friends. It has been a pleasure to share bread and water with you these last few days. If you do not already know, though Osirion is open to treasure hunters, the Ministry of Culture ensures that the kingdom receives a cut of all finds and withholds artifacts of special importance. Upon entering Eto, you must pass through a customs agent. I think that I can secure you as guest travelers, which earns the you your own private inspection."

Master Al'Far moves off and you see him talking with officials at the gate. Some nodding occurs, and what the Pathfinders assume is a customs agent flanked by two guards moves towards them.

"My friends, this is an Eto customs agent, Mahu." The Pathfinders see a bored Garundi man whose graying beard and tired eyes suggest he’s seen it all and heard every excuse at least a few dozen times. "May Desna shine on you." He bows politely before returning to his caravan, and preparing his cargo for inspection and entry in to the city.

"State your business. Where are you from? Where are you going? What have you seen?" the Garundi intones.

Should you choose to, please feel free to add any Diplomacy rolls at the end of your interaction with Mahu, and please indicate of it is an 'Aid Another'.

We are interested in conserving of history, likes as your Ministry of Culture is and we will be cooperating with such organizations. Oh, and we are to be guest travelers of Master Al'Far heres.

"As for what we have been seeing," Xûll turns his hands palms upwards, "Only sand and too few wells. Please be allowing us to find cool water within city walls."

Korasu chuckles, a bit sadly, "Ah. Unforunately, 'my' culture is probably more similar to your own. My parents had an insatiable desire for learning, you see, and we crossed the Great Ocean when I was but just a chickling. I did hear stories, of course, but they were the sorts that parents tell their young. 'Make sure to fold your robes, or Nevu~āmoa, Nevermore, will snatch you up in his great talons!' 'Nevu~āmoa gobbles up little boys who do not finish their meal is his terrible beak!'"

He pauses. "Do you have such stories among your kind?" He clucks lightly. "No, matter. Sadly, my parents never got to tell me more of the culture of our people. They were murdered when I was still a fledgling, killed by thieves who understood only the value of coin and not knowledge." His voice becomes grave. "I do not know if Nevermore really does torment misbehaving young tengu, or if those were merely just stories. I do, however, know for sure that he exists, as he ripped the eyes from my parent's murderers and laid them at my feet." His own eyes shine fiercely for a momment, then his beak splits in a Tengu approximation of a smile. "I have wandered astray, I apologize. We will have long hours of nothing but the shimmer of sands to surround us, I am sure, so I look forward to exchanging what tales I know for ones of your own."

I know, but pathfinders can get... creative. I was just suggesting that if any of the others wanted to spin a yarn they should leave Warpac out of it. In fact, even if they don't it would be better to leave Warpac out of it.

if Warpac is approached about his business he will scowl at the agent and gruffly state, "Like the bald guy said, Pathfinder business," and leave it at that.

Korasu pays close attention to anyone ahead of them, noting whether there is a customary exchange of coin as other travelers pass through Customs. When they reach the Garundi, he intones:

"آه. قد تجد السلام والظل هذا اليوم."

Osiriani:

"Ah. May you find peace and shade this day."

Korasu adopts the practiced cadence of the caravans, familiar with such a line of inquiry. "The origin of our caravan was Sothis, yet we are currently unsure as to our eventual destination. That will depend on our business pressing within the city."

Korasu glances at the rest of the group. "We do not have trade in cultural artifacts or any relics originating from the Ancient Kingdom, yes?"

Is there any significance that we'd recognize in the phrase "What have you seen?"
