Frankie pipes up to hopefully diffuse the situation, as he did frequently as a child between his Mom and her many, frequent 'boyfriends'. "Lets find these papers ok? Amahl you look in the backroom and Cypher you look out here behind the counter ok? Great... and... GO!"

Cypher looks ready to spit fire when Frankie interrupts. They stop for a moment, then are all subtle calm grace again. They tussel Frankie's hair as they walk by to help look.

"You'll make a good silver tongued rouge someday kid. Don't let the uprights and uprights keep you from doing what your good at."

The tiefling listened to the rant of Cypher and regarded him for a brief moment before he spoke up. "You might think I need your comfort in you lying and cheating to think it might make me sleep better, or claim I would happily murder everyone, but let's take a look at what happened so far. We approached a house, got attacked, none of us initiated it. Then we arrived here, had the woman dead to rights till you initiated a fight by trying magic on her. Yeah, I am the murderer here... Seems about right there." He shook his head as he leaned back and let the rest do the work for now.

Cypher smiles, and looks down at the recently bleeding figure of the Alchemist on the floor. They raise an eyebrow and cover their face with their fan to not so subtly hide a chuckle.

Of course sweetheart, your hands are perfectly clean, I'm sure. Not a drop of unnecessary blood on them at all in your storied career. Be a good tin soldier and look menacing while we find those papers.

Cypher starts helping to look for the papers.

Amahl bows slightly to Cypher. "My friend, please do not mistake my disapproval for your tactics with any lack of respect. Your skills are very useful and quite impressive, but Saranrae teaches that we must strive always to live fully in the light. I do not chastise out of anger, but rather fear. I fear what may befall you if you walk too close to the shadows. You are precious to Saranrae and to us, as well. I wish only the best in life for you. I apologize if my lack of tact came across as disrespect. I did not intend it so."

Koriana is bound and endures her captivity in silence. The two brothers who were guarding her shop are still dizzy from the fight, and nurse their wounds in a corner. Koriana's assistant sits in a chair in the back room. He doesn't mutter more than "Oh dear, oh dear..."

Thalia diplomatically removes herself from the discussion by moving into the backroom. "I'll help, let's see if we can find those papers."

After a bit of searching, the papers turn up, secreted in a small lockbox hidden beneath the floorboards under her writing desk.
Collectively, the documents provide incomplete evidence that the Andares family has colluded with several other noteworthy families to rig local elections and keep each other in important offices. "I can't thank you enough for saving me," she says as she reads the papers. "I've had my suspicions, but these should be enough to make a case against my father for violating the Common Rule."

The documents also suggest that Sander Bryton might be involved in helping Tercio Andares to remain a consul in return for similar treatment. When Thalia reads this, she rubs her nose in though. "That's a tough one. Even though he is suspect, the evidence in here doesn't seem conclusive. And he may be able to provide you with the military aid you seek."

Cypher raises an eyebrow but resists the urge to give a snarky answer. Instead, they flick their fan a few times in thought and speak slowly.

We need evidence. So, we get evidence. We have a couple of options to get that evidence. While we can fall back on brute force and violence, it'd be best if we saved that for last resort.

Cypher leans over and looks at the papers, trying to glean any information on the target that might be useful.

As I mentioned, I'm a liar. I could simply "Advise" the Consul that I would be willing to let these papers "Disappear" in return for his promise of military aid. When he agrees we'd have verbal confirmation of his guilt at least.

They grin and wink at the monk.

Wouldn't even be a lie technically, I'd happily let these papers go to defeat the demons at the world wound, but I'm not the one who gets to make the decision on the matter. The bigger problem is finding something physical that directly ties him to the corruption. Something that we can really nail him with. I can say, figure out the location and have our more... stealthy members collect it. And if the plan goes bottoms up, then we can go in weapons drawn. Thalia, is there anything in these papers that might indicate something we could get a clear tie about? Purchases, agreements, anything?

"Umm.. we saved Thalia and we have what looks like will give the Society the aid they wanted in return. What else is there to do here?" Right now we need to decide if someone is sneaking into Tercio or Sander's house and look for evidence. Would you be willing to do that?" She glances at the others, "Lying isn't unlawful. Sometimes it's the best thing to do to uphold the law. I have no problem with inflating the amount of evidence we have available, and see what happens."

Amahl sighs deeply. "Our mission is not to root out corruption, only to retrieve Thalia and secure military aid for the Society. If this Bryton can do that, I have no problem with telling him of the evidence we have and what will be done with it unless he's willing to make a deal. We have solid evidence on Koriana and Tercio Andares directly implicating them in our primary mission. They get turned over to Captain Demrick along with the evidence we have." Amahl nods at Shera. "I don't believe more evidence is needed for Tercio, he's well implicated here and I expect the alchemist will turn on him in return for clemency. As for Bryton, let's approach him first before we commit larceny."

Thalia listens intently as the Pathfinder decide what to do next. She speaks up when it seems like they want to confront Tercio. "Please, I can understand and appreciate your zeal. But I ask that you leave my father to me, and Captain Demrick. Between these papers and my own testimony, I am confident that we can bring him to justice. But if you act against him now, there might be... a misunderstanding, or tensions might run high. I don't want to see anyone hurt over this. My father doesn't deserve that."

"There was one thing I was wondering. You mentioned talking to Consul Bryton. Is he in town? If so, I could see the value in speaking with him. Remember, there's only weak evidence against him in these papers, and I'm not sure that he is in on it. But maybe he'll let something go."

Cypher flashes Thalia their winning smile.

I'm perfectly willing to let you do that my dear. Plus, if you get me alone with Consul Bryton, he'll be eating out of my hands quickly enough. I can get information out of him, even if I have to magically manipulate him to do it.

Cypher looks at the unconscious alchemist and winces.

Though I will need to be more discrete about the spell if it's necessary to do it that way. And I think one botch of my magic is enough failure for one trip for me. Either way, it may be best to let him think I'm speaking to him alone, and then if I start screaming something about being violently murdered, come in swords drawn.

Several of the Pathfinders had back into town to get Captain Demrick, while the others guard Koriana and her employees. The halfling Captain quickly arrives with some of the guards, to take them into custody. It is agreed that Thalia and Captain Demrick will confront Mayor Andares, while the Pathfinders make their way to the Eagle's Inn with a semblance of a plan. They find Consul Sander Bryton in the common room eating supper. He's among the other people, as befits Andoran customs, but has a table of his own. "Good evening," he greets. "I was wondering whether you'd be out all night. How goes the investigation?"

Cypher sighs and sits down next to Consul, carefully situating themselves juuuust so.

The investigation is mostly complete. Thalia has been rescued, poor girl.

She looks at the Consul and smiles winningly.

Apparently, Galtans had been told she was a runaway noble. Quiet a risky action for her father to take don't you think? I mean, what if they had decided to execute some revolutionary justice right then and there? A man may value his office, but I'm shocked that he'd value it more than family.

Cypher watches the man intently, hoping that he'll betray some of his inner thoughts. If they couldn't lie without the monk interrupting, they'd try using the truth like cudgel to the back of the head. They flip their fan out and wave it at themselves, trying to look dismayed and distraught.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 5 I can't wait until next level where I can afford some skill points to go into sense motive. >.< Hopefully someone else can read his reactions.

It's going to be quiet the scandal I believe. Thalia is going to testify against her own father and his subordinates. Such a messy business. We found all sorts of documents to...

They lean in and whisper, pitched low enough that the rest of the bar doesn't hear, holding up their fan to guard their face. The gentle smile never changes, looking for all the world like they are whispering a dirty joke then dropping a political grenade in his lap.

How this story ends depends a lot on what you have to tell us Consul. Those goons, your fellow consul, his daughter, their gonna start pointing fingers soon. And I've seen the documents... they are not the most flattering. But your a friend of the Pathfinders, and the Pathfinders look after their own. If your innocent, then we'll do everything we can to protect you. If your not...

They shake their head in mock dismay.

Well, people don't like being used. But, I'm sure your innocent.... aren't you consul? You'll tell us the truth, the whole truth?

Frankie gives Cypher a dirty look at the accusation, choosing to keep his mouth shut for the time being.

At the inn he makes his way to the bar to order food to be brought to the Consul's table. A large steak dinner for himself and lets everyone else order what they want. "Howdy there Miss! I'd like to place an order, we'll be seated over there with the Consul. I'd like your biggest steak, with extra onions and mushrooms and plenty of bread and butter! No veggies for me thanks!" Frankie has no trouble smooching up to the bartender - a kind woman in her fifties who quickly dotes on the young fellow. The Pathfinders seat themselves and Shera manages to sit close by without Consul Bryton taking notice. Some parts of the conversation may still be too low for her ears, though.
Cypher specifically said she whispered, and Sander will as well. Rules say a DC 15 Perception check to hear the details of a whispered conversation for everyone at the other table who wants to listen in, make Sense Motive checks, etc.

Consul Bryton eats as Cypher tells of the rescue. "That's very good news indeed. Her father will be... Wait-" His spoon rests halfway between hit plate and his mouth. "Are you telling me that Tercio himself orchestrated the kidnapping? To protect his office somehow?" He rest his spoon on his plate and wipes his mouth with a napkin. "That's quite hard to believe - I've come to respect him since he was elected Consul. He seemed like a good man. But, I suppose, if you've recovered Thalia and say it is so..."

When Cypher leans in to whispers her accusations, he turns angry. "Now wait a minute... I had nothing to do with this! Why would you come in here and insinuate..." He takes a good look at Cypher. "All right, I can see what you're trying to get at here. You want something, right? And you're willing to drag my name through the mud to get it, if push comes to shove? So, what do you want?" Cypher doesn't get a good read on the man, either way, except that he's not someone for beating around the bush.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Frankie heads back from the bar to get his seat at the table, fairly oblivious to the heated conversation between Cypher and the Consul but not enough so he doesn't see the rest of his party waving and calling him over. "Oh hey! I thought we were sitting over there... I guess not. I ordered my meal, you guys should put your orders in soon, I'm not waiting to eat, I'm starved!"

He looks around the table then back over his shoulder at the other table Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 "Why's everyone so quiet? Where's that wine? Of course I'm old enough to drink, is there even an age limit on that? I bet I've finished off more bottles than you!"

"We are trying to hear what Cypher and the Consul are saying without getting in the way."

Frankie nods somewhat slowly at first to Yanda then smiles and nods in the affirmative "Good idea!" He whispers back. I rolled his perception earlier, poorly I may add.

Frankie keeps his mouth shut except for a small glass of wine.

When Cypher leans into whispers her accusations, he turns angry.

Cypher snorts in disdain.

Blackmail? Absolutely not. To be frank, the Pathfinder Society wouldn't let me blackmail you even if I were the kind of person who'd stoop to such measures.

They sip at their drink and continue measuring up the man. It seemed obvious that his surprise and upset at the accusation were genuine to Cypher. In that case, on to the other aspect of their mission. Best to be straight forward.

We are not interested in pawns consul. We're interested in friends. The society will not drag your name through the mud, or force you to support us because then you will simply withdraw that support as soon as you get the chance. You will hate and resent us. I and the society have no interest in such an unstable alliance. However, we are willing to support and protect you as best we can if we can count you as a friend and ally. We are desperate need of soldiers to fight the horrors of the world wound, that is true. But blackmailing you would only mean we would get your dregs, your worst, begrudging scraps made because we forced you into it.

They smile and lean in closer, whispering almost into his ear.

We want a more... intimate, you could say, relationship than that. We want your best. We want you, not as a pawn, but as a partner. And if we need to stand between you and people who would run you through the mud to earn that partnership, we will. It's obvious that your innocent, but your enemies won't see it that way. They WILL try to associate you with this mess. They WILL try to hurt you. You are standing at a precipice, and your enemies surround you. We are offering a hand to you, to protect you and to draw you from that ledge. But only if you are willing to take our hand and be our friend in return.

They pull back and sip again at their drink nonchalantly.

No matter your choice, you will not find the pathfinders among your enemies. But, if your willing to take our hand, you will find us one of your greatest allies.

I'm going to assume that Cypher is sincere in this offer, since you didn't make a Bluff check.

Cypher's soothing words quickly defuse any upset they may have caused with the accusations. "I see. Well, that sounds reasonable. I have heard of the Pathfinders' efforts to launch an expedition into the Worldwound, and fighting against demons is a noble pursuit worthy of the Eagle Knights. Pushing back this invasion will be for the benefit of the whole of Avistan, and it would send a powerful message if Andoran's finest are present. Very well, I shall do what I can to support this Pathfinder expedition however I can." He takes another bite as he considers. "Now, you mentioned those documents implicating Tercio. You know that I have had dealings with him, and while I haven't been involved in this nasty affair, it could look bad on me. Would you be willing to hand over those documents, so that I can use them against Tercio while protecting my own good name from becoming involved? You must understand, there are certain delicacies involved in Andoran politics, and I am sure you and your team will be called away on another mission before long..."

Sense Motive DC 20+:
Sander Bryton seems sincere. He's accepted the conclusion that Tercio Andares was responsible for the kidnapping and will see to it that the mayor is brought to justice. On the one hand he trusts Cypher to actually protect him during the following trial, but he'd feel even safer if he could have the documents and do it himself.

Consul Bryton has stopped whispered so low, so the others at the nearby table should be able to eavesdrop without rolling Percepion checks.

good grief...

Cipher shakes their head.

"unfortunately, I can't make the decision to turn over those documents on my own, though I'm fine doing so."

Cypher waives over the others.

"Team, the consol has proclaimed his innocence, and I believe him. He wishes to ally himself with the pathfinder's for our quest to the world wound. He does however, request that we hand over the documents that reference him so he can mount a legal defense. I say we should and I'm willing to."

Frankie looks on and nods in agreement while he is focusing on looking towards the back of the bar for a large plateful of steak to come heading in his direction. Is that it? Oh.. no I think that's fish, eww. Who eats that smelly stuff! Oh there it is! WHAT? Vegetables? That can't be mine... Oh Shera just ruffled my hair, I better nod so it looks like I'm paying attention.

Assuming Farith doesn't object.

Cypher nods along with their companions.

Well enough then. We will hand over the papers to you, and we will do our best to assist you in the fallout. You'll need to speak to our superiors about arranging for the knights to join up with the pathfinders on the way to the world wound.

They reach over and grab some of that wine Frankie brought along.

In the meantime, I say we drink. Cheers, to new friends, and to more adventures.

Cypher delivers the papers in a way that is convenient and discreet to the Consul assuming no one objects. Cypher also takes some time with Yanda after the celebratory festivities to go over the documents they found before returning them to the Sovereign Court for their use. I forget anything important?

Consul Bryton is very pleased with this turn of events, and gladly invites the rest of the Pathfinders to join them at the table. He raises his glas. "This calls for a toast, despite the tragedy that has unfolded itself here. Still, I see good things coming from it, ultimately. To Pathfinder resourcefulness, and Andoran values. Cheers!" Short thereafter, the matronly bartender brings the food, with a modest steak for Frankie and an extra helpinh of mash "because he'll need it to become big and strong"!

--

The following morning, the Pathfinders learn that Captain Merton Demrick has indeed had Tercio Andares in custody. Sauerton is shocked, but remours of what actually happened quickly spread through the town and admiration for Tercio quickly turns to disgust. Thalia, however, is lauded for her willingness to stand up against corruption, even if it meant having to turn in her own father. Suspiciously, a number of townsfolk - close friends and business associates - disappear overnight, probably fled to avoid prosecution.

In the weeks ahead, the courts eventually convict Tercio Andares of betraying his oath of office and Common Rule, stripping him of property and position. Sander Bryton testifies against his fellow consul and uses Koriana's notes to good effect. Thalia’s unswerving adherence to Common Rule and her role in rooting out corruption cause the judge to favor her request to maintain much of the family’s property with some concessions, and she donates much of the Andares fortune to the Pathfinder Society. Consul Bryton holds words and designates a good portion of the Eagle Knights to the Pathfinder's cause in the Worldwound.

--

Cypher and Yanda manage to deliver the old Sauer family contract to Lady Gloriana Morilla, through some intermediate. A few days later, they receive a cryptic letter, stating that some things are like fine wine: They keep very well with age, and she knows the perfect occasion to enjoy this one.

Back in Almas, Venture-Captain Brackets congratulates the team on a job well done. "I knew there was an opportunity there, and I'm glad to see that you took it with both hands. Excellent job all around! Now please tell me you didn't bring me a 'souvenir'. I hate Sauterton Red!"

The end.
