Seems unkind to let him damage his ankle while we watch.

You try to attach the splint to Kalkamedes's leg, but he isn't exactly helpful. Kalkamedes refuses to stop for even a second, and you're unable to help him.

While you're running after Kalkamedes, trying to help him, time passes. Kalakamedes take another point of damage from his ankle due to his forced march.

S'arkee's magic instantly solves the problem. The party and Kalkamedes continue without any hindrance from hurt ankles.

An hour later, Kalkamedes's path takes him straight into a thick copse of thorns.

DC 18 Knowledge (Nature) or Survival:
You identify this hazard as a patch of razor bramble, a naturally growing weed capable of lacerating one's legs.

Unless anyone objected, Bulgo untied Kalkamedes's hands so he can potentially catch himself in a fall or such situation.

With a sigh Bulgo moves forward to help try and extract Kalkamedes from the brambles.

"You know, he is going is more or less a straight line.."
Assuming he actually is, rather than heading off at random angles

"If one of us went ahead and looked for hazards, we could probably steer him around the worst of them. I'd hate to think what would happen if we hit a river or quicksand without knowing about it in advance..."

He touches the unfinished sword. "Hi Gamin - while he is like this, can you influence him at all, encourage him to go left or right a little to miss some obstacles?"

So if I understand correctly, we've healed Kalkamedes and untied his hands, and I will be preceding him by 10 ft or so, with party members notifying me if he deviates from my path. Assuming no objection, Onward!

This is rough terrain. Be prepared to catch him if he stumbles.

The party thinks of a fine plan to get a heads up of future obstacles, but momentarily forgets the obstacle that had already presented itself:

StephNyan wrote:
An hour later, Kalkamedes's path takes him straight into a thick copse of thorns.

Kalkamedes continues to march into the thick copse of thorns. The thorns tear away at his clothes and legs, causing him to wound himself again. He appears to be determined to walk the entire 60 feet through the thorns, and has currently advanced 20 feet.

Damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1) + 2 = 4

His speed is 20, and he takes double moves. The copse is difficult terrain. He's been in the copse for 1 round, and will be in the copse for 2 more rounds if he proceeds.

If you choose to not stop him, or see no way to stop him:
As Kalkamedes continues to march through the thorn, he wounds himself even further.

20 feet later: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 = 6
another 20 feet later: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 = 6

He emerges from the thick copse a couple of seconds later, his legs covered in scratches and bruises. Somehow, this doesn't affect his pace one bit.

Can we see a way around the thorns? I think we have enough muscle power to push him off to the side and let him resume his course when it's safe.

The copse covers an area 40 feet wide and 60 feet deep.

Kalkamedes is currently 20 feet into the copse. Meaning he's got 20 feet of brambles behind him, and 40 feet in front of him. He's walking straight through the middle, which leaves 20 feet of brambles to both his left and right.

The area around the copse is clear terrain.

Eazy halts Kalkamedes by blocking him for a moment. skill check needed?

Neither backing out nor proceeding is without bloodshed for our sleeping companion. If we can hold him here with brute strength and/or ropes, maybe one or more of us can clear the way ahead. Acid can weaken the thorns and blades can clear them. What say you?

Why, with Magick!

Eazy causes a small blob of acid to spray from his hand onto a nearby thorn.

Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

Then follows up by hacking the damaged branch with his scimitar.

And blades!

Not so fast! >.< This happens before Ezekias's last post:

Damage Ezekias, from the thorns: 2d4 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 - 3 = 4

Ezekias moves into the brambles, cutting himself open. Luckily his armor reduces the damage he takes. He arrives in front of Kalkamedes, who doesn't look like he's going to stop.

Unarmed strike: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Nonlethal damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Nonlethal sneak attack damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Kalkamedes unexpectedly punches Ezekias in the face, disabling him. (Ezekias: 6/10 HP with 6 NL)

@Ezekias: He's not going to stop. You'll have to force him. A successful grapple would keep him in place, but he'll fight back.

@Rolan: Treat each 5 feet of brambles in front of Kalkamedes as an inanimate object with 10 hp, hardness 2, and vulnerability to fire. There's 40 feet in front of him, meaning there are 8 such inanimate objects if you cut those in his path.

1d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

Ezekias didn't go down, he was disabled. (Click link for info.) The post I made in which Ezekias took damage was chronologically before Ezekias's post with the attack versus the brambles. I assume Ezekias wouldn't have attacked the brambles in a disabled state? If he didn't, that'd leave him stranded (but still standing) in the middle of the brambles with 0 HP.

While disabled Ezekias isn't sure if he should still attack, but fact is he's still in front of Kakamedes. Surprisingly Kalkamedes looks like he's going to walk around Ezekias, instead of hitting him again.

Before Kalkamedes can really get moving, Rolan runs toward Ezekias and Kalkamedes.

Damage Rolan, from the thorns: 2d4 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 - 3 = 3

Rolan cuts himself when he moves through the razor sharp brambles. He tries to grapple Kalkamedes, but fails to do so. Kalkamedes then throws a punch at Rolan.

Unarmed strike: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 Nonlethal damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Could everyone update their stat bars when they take damage?

After throwing a punch at Rolan, Kalkamedes proceeds past him and Ezekias. Meanwhile, the other party members attack the brambles. They manage to cut nearly all brambles in the last 5 feet of Kalkamedes's path down.

Kalakamedes provokes an AoO from both Ezekias and Rolan. I assume Ezekias doesn't want to, but maybe Rolan does.

I thought when Nonleathal damage equaled remaining HP, you were knocked unconcious? Oh wait, just chekced online and he should be staggered, not disabled as it's Nonleathal.link eitherway, he's taken more damage now and still has 6NL so he should be unconcious now.

My mistake, Ezekias is indeed staggered. Not unconscious, because he hasn't taken any more damage: the other punch was aimed at Rolan, and Ezekias didn't make another move within the brambles.

Kalkamedes moves past Ezekias and Rolan, deeper into the brambles.

Damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 2) + 2 = 5 (9 total)

Kalkamedes has 20 more feet to go before he reaches the end of the brambles, where some of the party members are trying to clear a path for him.

If you'd just let him move out he'll take damage 1 more time.

Go ahead and post again!

cutting: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Negi, Bulgo and S'arkee had almost cleared one patch, and with one more attack Bulgo clears the patch. Kalkamedes now has 15 feet to go before he's out of the brambles, instead of 20.

Rolan moves toward those who are hacking at the brambles, to help them clear some more of Kalkamedes's path. On his way there, he takes some more damage.

Damage Rolan, from the thorns: 2d4 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (2, 4) + 2 - 3 = 5 Rolan: 1/9 HP & 3 Nonlethal.

Rolan manages to exit the brambles, but collapses before he gets to hack at the next patch.

@Ezekias: Moving within the brambles will result in damage. It'll take 1 hour for 1 point of nonlethal damage to disappear. Unless the others clear a path for you, you require healing.

"Speaking to him is useless while he's in this state. Thus I cannot reach him," Gamin replies, and Bulgo relays the message. "I think it's best if you just move over to the edge of this copse, and then your comrades can patch you up. Kalkamedes will be long gone if they're going to try hacking their way to you!"

There's 35 feet of brambles left in between Ezekias and the other party members. If they clear 1 more patch he'll be able to move out of the brambles with a double move, but he'll take damage once. If Ezekias goes out the way he went in, that'll be 20 feet. He'll then still need a double move, and will take damage once.

Let me try to make this a little less messy/confusing. We'll move in turns:
Bulgo (Hacked at brambles)
Ezekias 6/10 HP & 6 NL - Staggered
Negi

Rolan 1/9 HP & 3 NL (Moved to the edge of the copse and went down)

Sorry, I'm still not clear. It seems like there's no way to get out without taking damage, which will throw me into negative HP while I'm still in the brambles. Whatever it takes to get out of the brambles with 0 or more HP is Eazy's goal. Most likely that involves Acid Splash and/or scimitar slashes on the thorns (I'm allowed one Move OR one Standard action per round) followed by moving into the newly cleared space. This should work (even it it takes a while), assuming the thorns aren't growing freakishly fast.

tl;dr: I want to be out of these brambles with at least 0 HP, however long it takes.

Each 5 by 5 patch of brambles has 10 HP, and hardness 2. There's 15 feet (3 patches) to the nearest edge*. Ezekias could indeed cut down the patches and move into the empty squares. The brambles won't regrow (any faster than a normal plant does).

It's fine if Ezekias takes his time to cut himself free 1 square at a time, but keep in mind Kalkamedes will march onward. Once he's past the brambles he'll move 40 feet a round (double moving). Ezekias will fall behind if he's not healed at least 1 HP.

* I wrote 20 feet earlier, but the copse is 40 feet wide. If I divide that in 5-foot squares and place you in one of those, you got to move 15 feet till you're out of the copse.

Don't see any way around taking the time consuming route, not having any sort of healing on him.

Hey, can you guys leave a healing potion for me? Once I feel a little better I can jog (triple movement?) to catch up. Or maybe S'arkee stick with me long enough to heal me a bit?

Eazy picks a thorn out of his arm, wincing.

I'm open to suggestions here.

You did find a potion of CLW in Kalkamedes's house. I don't think anyone claimed it? I'm fine with it if Ezekias happens to hold this potion

Rolan's also down, but at least he's outside the brambles. So he can easily be healed by S'arkee.

Turn progression:
Bulgo (Hacked at brambles)
Ezekias 6/10 HP & 6 NL - Staggered
Negi

Rolan 1/9 HP & 3 NL (Moved to the edge of the copse and went down)
S'arkee (Hacked at brambles)
Kalkamedes

Those in bold may still take actions before Kalkamedes moves again. After his next turn Kalkamedes will be out of the brambles and just continue walking in a straight line.

If I'm at 1/9, wouldn't I still be able to act? How did I go down?

Unless anyone objects, Eazy happens to find that he's carrying the CLW potion and drinks it.

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Then moves out of the brambles as carefully as he can.

@Rolan: The reason you fainted is that your nonlethal damage is greater than your current HP. You took 5 damage from the thorns when you walked up to Kalkamedes, which put you at 6/9HP. When you tried to grapple Kalkamedes he fought back, punching you for 3 nonlethal damage. You then moved again and took 3 damage from the brambles. Now you're at 1/9HP, and you have 3 nonlethal damage.

Ezekias drinks the potion of cure light wounds he took from Kalkamedes's cabin. The potion heals all of Ezekias's damage, and an equal amount of nonlethal damage. (Fully healed.)

Instead of cutting down the brambles, Ezekias then tries to move out of the brambles as carefully as he can. Ezekias's speed is high enough to make it to the edge of the difficult terrain, but even when he moves carefully the brambles cause damage.

Damage Ezekias, from the thorns: 2d4 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (2, 4) + 2 - 3 = 5
