Maps: Absalom Initiation

Klaasel let me know that he'll be ready to join us tomorrow. That's good enough for me to get underway with the introductions. I've created a Google presentation for maps. It currently holds portraits of VC Heidmarch and the unknown woman.

The ramshackle tenement outside of Korvosa softly echoes with the sound of light rain. Venture-Captain Sir Canayven Heidmarch has stepped outside for a moment, to greet an arrive woman that you don't recognize. That leaves you a moment to get acquainted. Details of the mission are sketchy, so far. All that you've been told is that you'll be dealing with the sewers in Korvosa. Some of you may have some prior knowledge on that topic.

Knowledge (dungeoneering)

10+:
Korvosa’s sewers shelter an immense number of rats—dire and mundane. In addition, goblins, wererats, and otyughs all exploit the immense amount of refuse discarded by the city’s citizens.

15+:
The garbage also provides nutrition for a wide variety of fungi and shade-tolerant plants. Most are not dangerous, but a rare few supplement their diets by capturing live prey.

20+:
Several types of oozes are known to prowl the Korvosan sewers, particularly oozes that use cunning camouflage to get close to prey.

Knowledge (engineering or history)

10+:
The Vaults employ a hodgepodge of architectural elements both due to staggered phases of construction and the inclusion of natural cave features.

15+:
Not all of the tunnels leading from the sewers to the sea have grates, and sometimes marine creatures work their way into the tunnels.

20+:
Early Korvosan engineers incorporated pre-existing construction into the sewer system, including Shoanti burial mounds and unidentifiable, worked passageways.

If it's like the others, we may expect rats both mundane and dire, ire. Also, goblins, wererats, otyughs, and the occasional hungry fungus, gus. We must be careful, ful.

A man dressed in high quality noble robes just got a little bit panicked by hearing "sewers".

Sewers? What? I didn't realize we were actually going IN sewers. And.. perhaps Otyughs? Well no worries, I have to use some decent magic to keep my robes clean and fresh.

After recovering from this temporary minor panic he turns his eyes to the rest of the group, raising a small eyebrow at the tengu, as he never met one in person.

Well met, my name is Dindal Nimaros. And this is my scorpion, Flin. Flin? Where are you? Ah there. Well, better not to shake hands with Flin, that could hurt. Saying hi is fine.

He turns his attention again at the group.

Well, you seem like a capable lot, I'm looking forward to work with you.

Maps: Absalom Initiation

Venture-Captain Heimdarch reenters the building, with a haggard human woman as his side. She is past her prime but her posture expresses confidence and experience. The Venture-Captain first looks at the bottle of wine on the table, then at his opened backpack. His right eye twitches for just a flash, and his jaw also seems set a little harder than before.

Sense Motive DC 15:
Canayven Heidmarch is actually quite angry. He had probably meant the wine for himself and the woman, while waiting for you to return.

"As I said before," he starts his explanation without further ado, for this mission you will have to venture into the sewers beneath Korvosa. Sascha Antif-Arah,"[/b] he announces, gesturing to the woman next to him, "requires access to a particular vault. The society is going to help her." Sascha eyes each Pathfinder in turn then nods to herself with some satisfaction and steps forward gracefully. "Some years ago my friends and I had made quite a name for ourselves around Korvosa, and our adventures earned us a considerable amount of gold. We stashed most of it in one of the Vaults after evicting the cult that had already claimed it."

Sascha pauses for a moment, smiles, and shakes her head as if recalling particularly amusing details of the raid. "Anyway, I retired from the business after that, started up a shop, and lived peacefully until I got into trouble with the Hellknights. I can’t show my face in Korvosa because I don’t fancy spending my retirement in shackles, but I’m willing to cede my share of the loot in that Vault to you. It’s no dragon’s hoard, but it should be more than worth your time. The only thing I want from there is an old locket — nothing magical or worth fencing, but it means a lot to me. Once I have it, I’m getting out of this place and off to somewhere the Order of the Nail has no sway."

"The entrance shouldn’t be too hard to find, assuming you know what to look for," she remarks as she fishes several folded papers from her haversack. "There’s an old service entrance into the sewers in Midland, about a quarter mile north up Harborview Boulevard South, starting at my old shop on Eodred Street; I wrote down directions that should lead you to the vault. There’s a big room inside, and I stashed my share under the flagstones in one of the small chambers nearby."

She extracts a few more items from her bag and holds them out - three arrows them look to be magical in nature, and various flasks, four in all. "I hope you don’t need these, but you never know. I certainly won’t be using them in my retirement. Good luck to you, Pathfinders."

--

Spellcraft DC 23:
These are +1 aberration bane arrows, three of them.

Craft(alchemy) DC 10:
Two of the flasks hold antitoxins.

Craft(alchemy) DC 10:
One of the flasks hold antiplague. Drinking it gives a +5 alchemical bonus on Fortitude saves against diseases, for one hour. If already infected, you may make two saving throws that day (without the +5 bonus) and use the better result.

Craft(alchemy) DC 10:
One of the flasks hold alkali. It functions as a flask of acid. Against oozes and other acid-based creatures, it deals double damage.

Shera looks slightly embarrassed as she realizes that the wine wasn't for them. She shrugs. If I can find an open shop, I'll send a bottle to the house while we are on our way. Though that might not be a good idea if she's trying to lay low. I'll think about it more.

Aaah these are arrows of... ah no. Those have a different kind of glow. Hmm, this is beyond my knowledge.

Dindal looks a moment disappointed, but continues to inspect the flasks.

Dindal is an alchemist in his non adventuring life.

Ah, but these flasks I can identify. Two are antitoxin, one is versus the plague and the last one *sniff sniff pfoo!* is alkali. Kind of acid. Useful I'd say, especially versus oozes. Thank you Lady Antif-Arah. Lovely name by the way.

Sasha is content with Dindal's ability to identify all the alchemical items, although she's is not swayed by his flattery. Maps: Absalom Initiation

With their task set before them, the group of Pathfinders make their way into Korvosa and the Midland district. The city seems pleasant enough, with a plethora of docks on the Jeggare river. The architecture of the city belies its Chelaxian origins, and the large presences of dwarves in the streets and the shops shows the proximity of the Mindspin Mountains and the Janderhoff Citadel. With some asking around for directions, the group finds the entrance to the sewers at instructed, and Shera has opportunity on the way to make amends and make some purchases for the Venture-Captain.

The grate at the end of the alley leads to a rusty, slime-encrusted steel ladder that descends into the Korvosan sewers. There are tunnels stretching to the north, east, and south like roads in an underground city. Curtains of fungus and mold hang from the ceilings, which rise roughly ten feet above the tunnels’ walkways, running along either side of the sewage channels. Occasional dim patches of light filter in from the streets above providing minimal illumination. Despite the sickening smell of decay, the tunnels are free of garbage, waste, and the other byproducts of Korvosan life.

I have updated the map. I'd like you to take this time to settle on a marching order, how you will deal with lighting, etc.

Both have low light vision and are not bothered by the gloom. If we hit actual darkness, Yagi will light one of his torches.

He carries either sansetsukon (two-handed) or katana and torch, depending on light levels.

I appear unable to modify the map. @GM can you fix please?

Holy crap, it didn't say there were new messages in gameplay sorry guys ):

As the pathfinders enter the sewers they are followed by another who appears slightly embarrassed, more by his apparent lack of time keeping.

The man is dress in what appears to be a a common priest outfit with leather armour fit over the top. Upon his back are a spear a Sickle and a mace. Drawing hisbspear as he sets himself in the formation, reveals the two curved blades reaching out from the base of the blade.

"My name is Culvine. I apologise for being late." He finishes the sentence and turns to silence. It'll become clear quite soon he's not much of a talker, but still the is more he must. "I was given a solo brief, I missed the meeting by moments it would appear."

He then take a brief moment to look directly down the tunnel to the east.

"Azygg go last."

moved Azygg last and put Dindal in front of him. Are we walking through the sewage in the middle or on the sides using the sewage catwalk?

Seems like a good spot for me. Dindal won't go into the sewage water as well if not necessary.

Dindal eyes the newcomer with interest.

Welcome, Culvine. "Better late than never" as we say in our homeland.

Maps: Absalom Initiation

The Pathfinder create some light to see by and divide themselves among the two banks of the sewer. The illumination provides by Laurallei's Wayfinder allows Inquisitor Culvine to see a little further up the tunnel to the east, but that only shows some rats scurrying away, around a bend to the right.

As the group is about ready to move deeper into the sewers, they hear noise coming from the north, a flopping sound like something heavy moving through the water. Moments later, a three-legged creature appears around the bend, all mouth and tentacles. The creature roars and whips its barbed tentacles against the walls and ceilings of the sewers, giving a off a nasty scraping sound, like chalk over a blackboard. The hideous creature then speaks, in slow Common. "You give something good to Togg. I am Togg. Give Togg good food, with good taste." Its tentacles wave along its body menacingly, but it doesn't approach any further.

Knowledge Dungeoneering DC 14:
This creature is an Otyugh. They are particularly vile and horrid creatures that lurk in places most sane creatures avoid. They glory in the role of scavenger, wandering through vast underground caverns in search of the choicest cuts of garbage and waste. Otyughs are surprisingly intelligent, and often quite eager to form alliances with those who offer them a steady supply of delicious diversions in the form of offal and waste. Most otyughs understand the fact that other creatures find them unpleasant and hideous, but few really care.

I felt that coming.

No, not Flin, sorry. Probably its sting wil stick between the teeth of this monster, what could enrage it. (Whispering) I could summon a creature, which will be here for 18 seconds. What do you think?
