GM Crash |
You are in Absalom, the mighty City at the Center of the World, and you’ve always longed to explore one of the countless ruins of failed conquerors that litter the plains outside the city’s walls.
You’ve heard rumors that one of the sealed siege castles has been laid open by a minor earthquake. Word on the street is that no one has yet entered the tower, which folks are calling the “Fallen Fortress.” What better way to start a life of excitement and adventure than by exploring its long-abandoned, dusty halls and perhaps claiming its ancient treasures?
There is a notice on a bulletin board inside the Grand Lodge that a wealthy historian wishes to hire a group of 6 adventurers to go to this "Fallen Fortress" and retrieve any artifacts that may be found there. If there is any, they should be turned in to him at the local museum where he is the curator.
This is where everyone will meet and once everyone shows up, you will go out into the Cairnlands to explore. So introduce yourselves. :)
Graxzos Glyphkeeper |
A dwarf staggers down the street, wearing protective leathers and bristling with straps, buckles, and small pouches. A pair of dark goggles are pulled down over his eyes, despite the fact that it's not a particularly bright day.
"Shelyn's sweet teats, that woman can drink for three..." the dwarf mutters to himself as he weaves his way up the street. A cart rumbles past, and he winces at the noise. "Lessee if there's anything more fittin' fer a dwarf o' my skills than that ridiculous espi-o-nage stuff..." he grumbles as he peruses the notice board.
A few minutes later, the dwarf straightens out of his hungover slouch, a grin spreading across his face. Apparently unmindful of the danger, he pulls out a shining pistol and uses the barrel to prod his goggles of his face and into his chestnut hair. "An opened ruin? Shiny things aplenty? All sorts of things needin' t' be blown open?!"
The dwarf throws back his head and laughs into the open air. "GWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Looks like Graxzos's back in business boys!!"
Necress Nyx |
Nearby stands a fellow Pathfinder, a beautiful lithe female with long black hair and pale skin. She wears scale armor and carries a large wooden shield, in addition to a club made from the femur of some large humanoid creature.
Despite her attractive appearance, something seems...off. There is an eerie feel about her. A villager falls and drops a load of apples behind her, but she does not react. It is suddenly clear that the woman is deaf.
While she observes the other Pathfinders, she also looks at no one in particular and scowls or rolls her eyes.
"Shut up," she whispers to no one.
Asmythe |
Asmythe stands nearby looking like he is a bit lost or distracted. He wears greens, a cloak, trousers, and shirt, and the holy symbol for Desna is around his neck. He carries a bow and a sturdy walking stick.
Boderus Flower |
From a nearby alley a dark looming figure suddenly appears. He walks into the building and towards to the noticeboard to read the new message, unmindful of everyone else. At first sight he doesn't appear very abnormal but at closer inspection he looks very different. Instead of hands he has scaly claws and from under his cloak you see a tail. Under his hood you can sometimes see glints of scales instead of skin.
"Hmmmm... Looks very good to make some money."
His hood falls back a bit and you see him 'smile'.
Looks more like a sneer.
Graxzos Glyphkeeper |
Graxzos looks around. "You, you, and...you!" he says, pointing to three who look like they might be Pathfinders and are reading the notice. "Wanna make some money?"
Boderus Flower |
Boderus turns around to the dwarf and keeps smiling. He says with a whispery voice.
"Just what I was thinking about little man. Sounds very good to me."

Now that the party has gathered, they all head out toward the fortress. A few hours from the city walls they approach the fortress. The ruined siege castle now being called the Fallen Fortress rises out of the churned earth of the Cairnlands. No doors or windows mar the otherwise smooth expanse of the tower’s walls. The tower is quatrefoil in plan; its eastern wing has largely collapsed, exposing the interior floors to the open air. Only the topmost level seems whole, though its eastern portion hangs precariously over the mountain of rubble left by the collapse. At ground level, the rubble frames a gaping hole in the side of the building that provides access to the tower’s darkened interior. The tower is 80 ft tall. As the party approaches the tower, they hear howling from the north and see some wild dogs running towards them.

Those in bold can act, everyone that is not acts after me.
Graxzos Glyphkeeper |
More or less the whole way out to the Fallen Fortress, Graxzos keeps up a steady stream of banter, regardless of his companions' interest or responses to it. When he sees the tower, he whistles. "Looks like a site ripe fer the pickin' t'me!"
The sound of the dogs draws his attention, and before anyone else can even blink his pistol is in one hand and his shield in the other. He fires off a blast at the leading dog. And will move to be within 20' if the dogs aren't already there.
Pistol Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 against Touch
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
The blast goes wide by a mile as Graxzos attempts to flourish the pistol impressively in hand...while taking the shot. With a curse, he goes to stow the weapon again and pull out his ax.
If I didn't have to move, I'll stow the pistol as a move action and draw the ax.
Necress Nyx |
Necress smiles coldly and slings a well-aimed stone at one of the dogs, striking it in the center of the forehead.

Combat over!
The party approaches the tower and see that the doors to the north and south rooms of the first floor are dark and open. We need someone with a light source. The people with darkvision can see that there is too much rubble in the south room to advance and there is also a lot of rubble in the north room, but little enough so they can still walk through it. The 2nd floor is also reachable...Climb DC 10 with a rope, 15 without.
Boderus Flower |
Darkvision here :)
Boderus looks around at the entrances and sees only two ways in.
"We could either go through the northern entrance, although that would be a tight fit. Or we could go through the second floor, I believe I see a space we could get into there too. Anyone have a preference?"
Necress Nyx |
"It seems the welcoming committee has gone to greet other guests," Necress states flatly as the dogs retreat.
As they approach the tower, she lights a torch with flint and steel, having no other way to see in the dark.
Asmythe |
Asmythe casts Light on Enoch, his familiar, and has him fly above the group to provide them some illumination. "I always say that his smile lights up the room."
You can't be absolutely sure, but Enoch does not seem to be smiling.
Graxzos Glyphkeeper |
As Asmythe and Feyandoria greet each other, Graxzos pants and watches the retreating dogs.
Wisdom: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
"Yer brothers?" he asks, slightly incredulously, gazing back and forth between the two elves. "Well, 'at makes sense. Pointy-eared types all look pretty much the same anyway..."
Once the group is looking into the Fallen Fortress, Graxzos purses his lips and squints into the darkness, relying on Enoch and Necress's torch. "Looks like the south ain't an option here...it's the north or up, if we wanna advance. Any thoughts?" He swings a loop of silken rope off the side of his pack. "I got a rope if we wanna go up..."
Graxzos Glyphkeeper |
"Eh, yeah, yeah, suppose it is..." Graxzos squints into the darkness ahead. "Right then! Let's press on!" Making sure his gun is loaded, he draws it and his shield, and advances cautiously into the north room.
GM Crash |
As Graxzos and party advances into the north room, he sees that the northern wing of the tower seems to have escaped the worst effects of the collapse, but rubble still litters the floor and everything is covered in a thick layer of stone dust. Thick cobwebs cloak the ceiling and hang down the walls like gossamer tapestries. A single archway stands open in the southwest wall. As he enters the room a web shoots down and Web: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 it hits the ground in front of him.
