this is the gameplay thread!

The handsome black man pauses to flash a smile at the cafe's barrista, a good looking blonde. It's a dazzling smile, one that opens doors... and other interesting things. He uses it often. "I am the one called Rataji. I sent a messenger ahead to reserve the table in the back room. I assume you have it ready for me?"

He smiles even more broadly as she blushes. Business. Rataji reminds himself. Business first.

He bides his time waiting for the others by perusing the personnel files that the Aspis consortium had forwarded. He raises his eyebrows. An interesting group of misfits. And how will you lead them, Rataji?

He sips his coffee, which he takes black with no sugar. It is a bitter brew, but complex and satisfying. He knows that he will lead them as he always has... with panache and style.

As she makes her way down the street towards the meeting location, Joliryn silently muses about the latest job. It seems these people love constantly shifting teams. At least they are prompt and generous with payment.

Making one last check of her appearance before entering the establishment, she walks in and looks around. After a few words with the barrista, she is directed to a back room.

When she enters the room, there is only a single human there sipping from his cup as he reads some papers.

Waiting for him to make eye contact, Joli makes a brief curtsy and announces "I am Joliryn. I believe my skills were requested." Her words have the crisp, precise enunciation favored by the Chelish nobility. Her weapons, a kukri and a spell component pouch, are clearly visible at her belt.

Standing straight, she confidently looks over the man before taking a seat.

Agent 322 scurries down the street, her face half concealed by her hooded white cloak, trying to make herself as small as possible. As she passes, she gently brushes against the wall. Is this real? Or is the other metropolis beyond the stars the one true reality?

"We must stay unnoticed...in order to carry out the will of Dreamer of the Deep," she cackles to herself softly in an old crone's voice, as she goes down the street. She patted herself to ensure that all her daggers were concealed under her cloak.

She enters establishment, trying to keep to the side of the room and diffidently approaching the barkeep, and speaks in what would be a pleasant alto, except for the stutter, "T-the b-backroom please".

She is ushered into the backroom, where with her head bowed, her face in shadow, she approaches the handsome black man and the halfling. She looks around furtively to ensure that only the halfling, and the black man are in the room. "The P-professor s-sent me. S-said I w-would be needed. "

Nice college town. Nice people. He likes that. Nice people make his job that much easier. And that's three that 'ave gone in so far.

Time to get this show on the road.

He leaves his room with the window that looks down on the cafe front. He's wearing another man's little red vest, and jaunty, little red fez. He had to buy his own white shirt and black pants. Ben Artemin's wouldn't hardly fit his big frame.

He walks out the door, and past the cafe, and down the street before doubling back via the alleyways he scouted two days before.

The smell out back of the cafe is only just tolerable. Trash isn't even heaped here it just is here. He wondered what the prim and proper society children inside would think. Or what their rich parents would think. They wouldn't he figures. No one ever goes looking for ugly.

He walks in. He makes Ben's excuses for not coming to work and tells them all he's there to take his buddy's place. He's served there before, just a long time ago. They could ask Mr. Ottowambo, the boss. He's not in? Oh, that's too bad. Well, I know the drill. I've seen it done enough times. Hah! Smile.

He gets to work. Good, honest work. He likes work. Keeps him busy. Idle hands are Asmodeus's workshop. Everyday at work is new and unusual and brings its own unique challenges. And even though he's half-human (and that just means he has to try that much harder) his co-workers don't argue with him--partly because he does a good job. And that's good. He would hate to have to kill all these nice people.

"Who wants a refill?" He claps his big hands together smiling cheerfully through his tusks.

Rataji makes a steeple with his expressive fingers and smiles encouragingly at both women. "Welcome, ladies. I am the one called Rataji. I am glad to see that you both arrived early and eager to work. Did you find the journey here educational?"

Small talk is important. It builds trust, and it gives Rataji a chance to see first hand how his team thinks and interacts with one another. Dossiers are only helpful until a point. How often have they contained outright lies and fictions? His own dossier contains a number of fictions, several of which Rataji wrote himself. He never trusts them more than his own observations.

Joliryn looks small and delicate, not anything like the ruthless killer he'd envisioned. Good. It is easier to get close to your targets if you can blend.

Agent 322 on the other hand... He looks over the strange, fey-like elf girl in her white cloak, with her stutter and her social awkwardness. What has the Consortium given me this time? He frowns. She is a tool, but one broken in ways that make her far too unpredictable for my taste. Her dark powers intrigue me, but how will this one ever BLEND?

When offered coffee, Rataji raises an eyebrow at Mister Z, and soundlessly holds out his coffee cup. Mister Z, evidently, was one who knew how to blend a little too well.

So this is my rising star... the one that the Consortium saw fit to make my second in command. Impressive. How long, I wonder, before he decides to gain promotion by putting a knife in my back? I'll have to be extra careful with how I handle this one. He ponders it for a second. If he's as good as they say, I'll give him lots to do. Keep him challenged, let him gather what laurels he can. And then assess if I need harsher methods to keep him in check.

"Nice uniform, Mr. Z." Rataji's smile broadens. "Will there be a conflict of interest, or will you remember which job you are actually working?"

Educational? I thought I was to keep a low profile...

She gives Rataji a puzzled look. "No, my journey was actually rather uneventful." As it was meant to be.

When the server enters, Joliryn gives him a quick look and waves him off. I can wait to eat until I'm someplace of my choosing. She tries to hide her surprise and gives the server a second look as Rataji converses with him. No obvious weapons. Best to be wary, this one is likely to be tricky.

Rataji nods to Joli's answer. Uneventful? That is what you tell people when you want them not to pry... He stores the answer away for future reference.

Excellent point. You have great skill, and Rataji lousy perception. :)

Rataji laughs. I like this one!

"Your disguise is excellent," Rataji admits. "Such attention to detail. I like it. Had your dossier not mentioned a penchant for this sort of disguise, you would have caught me completely off guard."

He pulls out a pocket watch. "We are expecting two more arrivals. Still... I've heard the beignets in this cafe are lovely. Hot, flaky, layered... Perhaps we could have a few as an appetizer?"

Agent 322 pulls back her hood that kept her face in shadow. On her forehead is the mark of a complex rune around an eye.

Knowledge religion DC15:
Cthulhu's holy symbol

Her shoulders straighten, and the haunted look of one who has looked into the abyss disappears, replaced by an alien presence behind her eyes.

"We are Agent 322. We are Many, from beyond the void. And we have been summoned. Our journey was tolerable, as was to be expected. If it pleases you to order beginets, then proceed," in a deep, confident basso.

If the server approaches, Agent 322 will pull her hood up to carefully keep her face in shadow.

"Er, right." He says, startled by the low rumbling avalanche of sound emanating from the wire-thin elf. Her waist was no thicker than his thigh. She's so thin a strong wind could breaker her in half. There was something else about her--something off. She reminded him of a negative after image of that she-elf Merisiel he had tangled with near Molthune. Of course elves all looked that same to him. Still, he knew enough not to underestimate them anymore. Especially not the knife-toting crazy ones.

"I'll bring a platter." He headed back to the kitchen. Why did they always give him the nut jobs? He knew why, but it didn't make him feel any better. He struck the wall hard.

Six? That was a big crew in his line of work. Lots of opportunities for lots of people to make lots of mistakes. Lots of chances to get killed.

He must of had a very unhappy look on his face. The kitchen staff were avoiding him and those staff that could leave the room did so. Those left behind kept their heads low, concentrating on their work, hoping he didn't notice them. Good, he needed time to think.

Rataji's eyebrows go higher still as the basso voice pours out of the slender little body of the elf. Though he had been expecting something like it, it still unnerved him more than the mage liked.

"Agent 322, I am glad that you approve of the beignets... I think you will find them delightful. That said, could you please choose a less conspicuous voice when we are in public venues?" He consults his notes, then looks up again with a smile. "I'm sure the Professor impressed upon you that there would be times we'd need to pass unnoticed in a crowd."

Then Rataji adopts the same hissing speech that the girl had spoken just seconds before.

Aklo:
"The half-beast might not be as weak as you think, and neither am I. It would not do to underestimate either of us, my lady."

As Zed returns with the first order of beignets, Rataji smiles, passing the plate around. The beignets are fragrant and still warm, smelling gloriously of oil, sweet yeasty dough and powdered sugar. He turns to Joliryn. "Have you ever had these before? I only ask because I love watching halflings encounter gastronomic bliss."

He takes a bite himself, not caring that the powdered sugar now dusts his clothes and fingers. He can always prestidigitate himself clean later. Oh yes. They are every bit as good as I remembered.

Then he returns his gaze to 322, his big brown eyes studying the strange little elf for a moment. "Out of curiosity, how many of you are there? Could we meet all of the personalities this morning so we know what to account for in our planning?"

And so there are no more unpleasant surprises to make me jump out of my skin...

"Also, I believe that Joliryn is right, 322. We need a use-name to call you. Is there one you've used in the past, or should I give you one? I think 'Bianca' might suit you for this mission if you like it." Then he pauses, thinking of a name he had not heard since he was a boy. "Or perhaps, 'Vara'? It means 'stranger' or 'she with many faces' in Polyglot."

Joliryn raises her left eyebrow slightly and gives an inquisitive look at Rataji. A voyeur of people's eating, or is this some sort of trap? "Perhaps some other time." as she passes the plate to the half-elf without taking anything from it. There was a slight pause before passing the plate, as if she was tempted by the offer.

Joliryn quickly jumps in and suggests "or since each part of your preferred moniker starts with the letter Te, how about Tease." The mischievous glint in her eye suggests that the pun was intentional.

Agent 322's widen in surprise at Rataji's perfect pronouncation of the Holy Tongue. Perhaps this one has been marked by the Great Old One as well..and could be useful in the future. Her malicious grin fades to become an enigmatic smile.

Aklo:
"You speak the tongue of the Dreamer? We approve,"
she whispers to Rataji in that same high pitched sing-song voice.

Agent 322's eyes fill with the alien presence once more as she ponders the rest of Rataji's words. "We are Many. But of the Many, of Voices there are Four. There is one that will suit our purposes of fitting in."

"Names are a mortal conceit. They mean nothing to Us. Vara will serve." she continues in her basso. A name is like a mask, to be used and discarded. Like the way a snake sheds its skin.

She waits until Rataji has taken a bite out of the beignet, with nothing untoward happening to him, before mechanically taking a beginet off the plate and eating it.

As Agent 322 takes her first bite into the beginet, her shoulders slouch and the haunted look returns to her eyes. "O-oh Rataji, t-these are g-great. We haven't h-had such g-good stuff f-for a w-while. T-thank y-you so m-much," she stutters in her pleasant alto as she breaks into a tremulous smile, and devours the rest of the beignet with relish.

She turns to Joliryn, "W-we were a-always to use Agent 322. O-or the P-professor would p-punish us." The smile fades and a hurt look appears in her haunted eyes,"P-people called us M-monster, W-witch, S-shadowfiend and F-freak."

Rataji raises his expressive eyebrows to Joliryn. "In this world, like it or not, that is exactly who determines it." His dark eyes study 322, now Vara. What is he doing? Is he undoing the Professor's work with her valuable experiment by treating it as a person? He pauses and shakes his head. Conditioning that can be shaken by the offer of a name and beignets is conditioning that has a very unsteady foundation indeed.

He looks into 322's dark and haunted eyes. "I feed my people well. It's a thing I do." Because unlike nut jobs like the Professor, I like to have tools that are high-functioning and useful. "Monster, Witch, Shadowfiend, and Freak," he nods, repeating those words thoughtfully. "Those are the words people use for those with power, Vara. Those that make them afraid." He grins. "I have been called some of those from time to time. Not 'Shadowfiend,' of course. But all the other terms, yes. It's best to own your power and uniqueness. Accept it for being who you are. You are far from being the only monster on this team."

Agent 322's haunted look fades, replaced by a calm, calculated one. She turns to Joliryn, and speaks in a smooth and cultured countertenor, "Indeed. What goes around comes around, does it not?", and gives Joliryn a slight smile.

"Yes, flails do switch hands. But somehow those who wield them always make the rules for everyone else."

Rataji is even more taken back by this cool, collected persona than he had been by the other three: the haunted stutterer, the sing-song mean girl, or the basso profundo lover of proclamations. Crazy he was expecting. Cool and collected? Not so much.

"That's four voices so far." His own voice, a rich instrument, sounds calm and professional. But Rataji had always been a gifted liar, talented at hiding his feelings. "Have we met everyone, then? And will this be your public persona, Vara?"

What was Z doing with the pepper? Rataji shook his head. Perhaps it was better if he didn't know...

"Why else would people seek out them out except to put themselves ahead of the pack?"

"There are many more, but they are inconsequential and will be no part of our plans.", she muses. "Each of the Four hold sway over certain domains, so to totally deny what is a part of us, would be unwise."

"To your second question, yes."

She turns to Joliryn, "There are too many beginets for us to finish, and they're too good to waste. Besides, if there was anything wrong with them, both of us would have fallen over already," she says with a twinkle in her eyes.

At some point one of the more observent diners notice that a man in the corner has been studying the group intently. Giving the observer a slight nod, he draws himself up into a towering mass of muscles, leaving the observer to wonder how it took so long to notice the man. The huge composite longbow should have been a dead giveaway but somehow Marnarius managed to hide it and his now protruding longsword from view as he sat. As he approaches he scans the room, though one would assume it unnecessary given the amount of time he must have spent aqlready scanning the crowd, lending the appearance of a man with serious issues in the area of trust. The scowl on his face doesn't help either. "Marnarius," he states bluntly, and occupies a seat without asking. There is an almost palpable chip on his shoulder.

Male Human (Minnesotan) GM 5 Gallows of Madness |Midnight Marauder

As you sit around the table, each of think about the mission at hand.

Rataji:

Rataji,
Congratulations are in order, my friend! Three years in the Consortium, and you have already earned the silver badge! What’s more, you are in charge of a critical element of the upcoming mission. As the ranking agent on your team, this is your first shot at being in charge, but I warn you that this first team isn’t one you’ll want to boss around; this is a coalition force, and everyone seems to be the favorite of someone else a lot higher up in the food chain. Aim to coordinate, not command.

Look on the bright side, though: after all of those briefings that you had to sit through, now you are the hotshot who gets to lay out the plan. I’ve summarized the objectives below so that you don’t forget, but it’s up to you to make it interesting and inspire your team. You’ll do great.
—————
Hundreds of Aspis agents and sympathizers are assembling throughout Absalom in preparation for an attack on the Pathfinder Society’s Grand Lodge. Most of these teams are in position to sow chaos, lure the Pathfinders’ attention elsewhere, and keep the rest of Absalom from interceding.

You are the lynchpin of the assault. Infiltrate the Grand Lodge, using the festival and throngs of unfamiliar faces to cover your movements. Gather what additional information you need, meet with any informants your team knows about, and lay the groundwork for your assault—split into smaller groups if necessary. Your cue to enter Skyreach—the towering stronghold the Society thinks unassailable—is a speech given by Master of Swords Marcos Farabellus. Agents will start ushering Pathfinders toward one of the lawns and pouring drinks for a toast, giving you a fairly generous window to get inside.

Once inside Skyreach, you have two major objectives: open the Hao Jin Tapestry gateway, and secure the Sky Key in that order. I have included some notes about how to activate the tapestry, as well as the coordinates within the tapestry where our allies are gathered. However, the notes only address how to send one person inside, not how to
bring anyone out. It seems Zey is paranoid about even keeping any notes about cracking the tapestry open, and he only stores them in one of the vaults beneath Skyreach—a section called the Antarnicus Wing, used for most of the tapestry’s treasures. Be prepared to break in. Once you have secured the notes, get to the tapestry chamber quickly.

Handle any opposition, open the gateway, and welcome our allies from inside the demiplane. Make sure that they have some sense of where they’re going.

After that, ascend to the small museum where the Society is keeping the Sky Key. It’s the usual routine: take care of any guards, grab the target, get out, and keep the whole operation clean. A second team (listen for the code “Five fingers till Oathday“) should find you soon after; pass them the Sky Key, get out, and congratulate your team.
Mission accomplished.

Make the Patrons proud,
Myrosype

Marnarius:

Marnarius,
I promised you I would get you out, didn’t I? After three long years in captivity, cast away by the Pathfinders who cared nothing for your humanity or the life you had left behind, you are finally back. I must accept some of the blame for your being stranded, for it was I who assigned you to that lucrative post; however, it was that fool Aglorn who failed to guard the gate and lost us not only our way into the tapestry but also several of our finest agents. This injustice shall not stand. I would not assign you a mission if I did not have the highest confidence in your abilities, and I consider securing you this particular venture a small step in reconciliation. The Pathfinder Society shall burn, and you shall have the revenge you seek.

There are several hundred of our agents throughout the Grand Lodge ready to inflict damage and provide you the distraction needed to reach high priority targets. Anything you can do to make their jobs easier by preparing a few distractions of your own would help you as much as it would them. I already have numerous arsonists ready, but nobody seems bold enough to do anything about the zoological garden the Pathfinders keep. That’s why we’re fortunate to have a resourceful agent like you, willing to aid these fellow wretched creatures also unjustly imprisoned by the Pathfinders. I am sure they, like yourself, would love a chance to extract some justice from their captors. In addition to the forces within the Grand Lodge, hundreds of people who, like you, wish to escape from the confines of the tapestry are massed by your old base camp. I am sure that if your fellow agents forget where your allies are stationed, you can steer them in the right direction.

Do you remember the weapon I sent you to recover in Hao Jin’s hellhole? After they secured the gate, they snatched it up, and it went right into one of the vaults beneath Skyreach. Find it, and it’s yours to keep and use as you see fit. Wield it in the name of vengeance and the Consortium.

Regards,
Tseka

322:

While you slept last night, a familiar figure wearing a blue coat and mask visited you. She smiled as she stepped over the threshold of your childhood home, whose windows were all bound in chains.

“Oh my dear 322, how does freedom feel? Are you still staring at the sky in wonder and fear? Do you still dream of the doorway between the stars? Have you kept writing in your journal?” The masked woman paused as she looked at you, and then smiled again. “Had you stopped wondering if I would find you again? Hardly. You are as drawn to uncover your own secrets as I am.” Shaking her head as if remembering some sweet memory, she continued. “Clinical experimentations ceased because you demonstrated increased capacity to channel the Lurker’s dark mysteries. I have guided you to Absalom in order to participate in a field study—a live test of your powers. Prepare yourself to work with members of the Aspis Consortium. Assist them to the best of your abilities.”

“You have two other responsibilities, both important to our studies and our allies. The first is this,” she said while conjuring a glassy, hexagonal pad out of dreamstuff. “It emits a resonance similar to the stars beyond, just as you do, so none of your allies will know how to operate it. I have used it to channel cosmic life energies into tiny homunculi, but I suspect that it could animate something far grander. Find a suitable host, attach it without drawing attention to yourself, and activate it when you see fit.”

“Your other task is even more important. At some point during your mission, you will find a simple lantern among your possessions. If opened, it captures the escaping essence of whoever dies near it, ensuring Pharasma never judges the unfortunate soul trapped within. Only one Pathfinder can repair the damage inflicted in the upcoming Aspis attack: Aram Zey. Ensure that the Society cannot call upon his expertise ever again, and I shall ensure his expertise helps you learn more about yourself.” The masked figure raises her arm in a salute. “Godspeed, my curious disciple—whichever gods those may be.” With that the dream ended.

Shihoraj:

Shohiraj,
After hearing the reports of lesser agents operating under lesser commanders, allow me to express how pleased I am to hear that you have accepted this job. What I have heard from my colleagues about your coworkers sounds equally reassuring; they are all competent in their respective fields. However, none of them can compare to your practical, on-the-job experience I am relying on you to ensure that this mission goes off without a hitch. Each bystander’s scream, nearby explosion, or track left behind is another complication that could jeopardize the operation.

My other agents have been watching the Grand Lodge closely. I have included the incomplete map that they created, noting the locations of your objectives in Skyreach. In addition, the agents report that the Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine—normally responsible for managing the keys to Grand Lodge’s vaults but concerned about his ability to keep them out of reach—has delegated several of the keys to one of his protégés, a halfling named Janira Gavix. My intelligence reports that she practically worships the Master of Scrolls, so there is no chance that she would take a bribe. Supposedly she is rather proud of her storytelling prowess, though, and can often be found near large crowds. If you can relieve her of the keys, your infiltration of Skyreach should be all the cleaner. I have enclosed a sketch of the halfling to assist your efforts to locate her.

May silence hide your footfalls,
Kitio Aspenthi, gold agent

Jorilyn:

Joliryn,
It’s been several years in the making, but the coalition of some of the finest Aspis minds has finally manifested in this approaching assault—a fight to regain the Consortium’s glory and put the Society back in its place. I have not forgotten your earlier contributions, and I have pulled a few strings to secure you a key role in the upcoming operation. You won’t have the tiresome chore of leading the team; one of my colleagues has elected one of his cat’s paws to the role, and I trust you’ll let him parade about while letting you get the real work done.

In fact, everyone on your team has powerful connections and probably thinks highly of themselves. I am betting on this, actually, because those connections have been particularly cagey about their own reasons for participating in this raid. Just as a tracker can tell the health and drives of an animal by the spoor it leave behind, you can help me gaze into my colleagues’ minds by discerning what it is that their agents want to accomplish. Keep an eye on your comrades, and report what you can to me about their ulterior motives.

Of course, I would not demand information without sharing some in return. One of my many spies in the Society is a Chelish man named Arminaldi Charthagnion, a disciple of Nethys’ divine secrets. He is unhappy with the Society’s treatment of artifacts, and I have managed to keep him selling me secrets with the promise of helping him liberate a relic or two. I am expecting his latest report soon, but since you will be there anyway, perhaps you might meet him at the Wall of Names and use the intelligence as you see fit.

He won’t acknowledge you as my agent unless you tell him “The wall slithers like a snake through grass.” You’ll know you have the right man if he responds “None would step on so great a serpent.” He should give you what you need to know, and no more need be said. Just try not to spoil his cover or your own by making a scene about it.

I await news of your victory,
Suliji Peshar

Zurnzal:

Zurnzal,
We have reviewed your work over the past four years, and so far your performance has gone
beyond the expectations to which we typically hold our contractors. The Consortium is always on the lookout for resourceful, intelligent operatives who know how to do more than just bash heads together—useful a skill as that is. I have a key vacancy in my roster, but I need more than just a knee-breaker who will knock down what I point at. Consider your current mission a tryout of sorts. At least one of your teammates is taking notes on your performance. Impress them, and you’ll impress me. Do that, and I’ll have a bronze badge waiting for you.

The upcoming attack relies on chaos, and that same chaos can cover your team’s tracks. What could be more upsetting to the Pathfinders than discovering that someone in their midst was a traitor? Of course, you may have to make a traitor by making an upstanding but easily missed Pathfinder disappear. If he happens to be a traitor already, that’s even cleaner. A missing traitor means no alibi, and that means someone disguised as that traitor could pin any number of crimes on him. Whether you do that or not is up to you; after all, an agent able to delegate effectively is just as valuable to me as one who can do the job himself.

Your friend in Tamran

I have replicated these on the campaign information page, so that you can refer back to them. Please only read your spoiler, at least until we are done. Feel free to RP your character on your planning.

Male Human (Minnesotan) GM 5 Gallows of Madness |Midnight Marauder

You are Aspis Consortium operatives, hand-picked by your superiors for one of the most daring missions ever attempted against the hated Pathfinder Society. For centuries the Society has been the hyena of the archaeological world, descending upon legitimate Aspis operations to snatch whatever the Pathfinders want, kill hardworking contractors, and grow wealthy on the profits of their “historical preservation.” As they say, the victors write the history books, and the widely distributed Pathfinder Chronicles paint the Society’s piracy as heroism guided by a
moral compass as true as the wayfinder each agent carries.

Despite the thick walls and heavy windows of the rented home that serves as your safe house, the passage of Pathfinders from across the Inner Sea region creates a muted rumble as they make their pilgrimage to the Society’s Grand Convocation, an annual gathering in which Pathfinders tell tales of their exploits, show off their discoveries, and celebrate another successful year. Every additional Pathfinder is another set of eyes to spot trouble and another blade ready to defend the Grand Lodge,
yet every voice and footstep makes it even safer to discuss the impending attack.

Rataji looks at his watch, and then nods to everyone. "It's time to read our sealed mission briefings, team."

Taking out his knife, he slits open his envelope, and reads with growing excitement. Could this be? Truly? Not only his first command, but for a mission to infiltrate the Pathfinder Society Lodge itself and cause mayhem? A chance to deal with our allies from the demi-plane and to mess with both the Sky Key and the Hao Jin Tapestry, with notes stolen from Aram Zey? Oh, this will be wonderful!

He waits patiently for everyone to finish their briefings, before saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen. This is the mission of a lifetime. It will make our reputations in the Consortium, and will be lucrative as well." He grins. "Now let's overview our goals and set up our plan of attack."

Joliryn spends a few minutes inspecting the outside of the envelope before opening it with her Kukri. Such a hassle, always double checking. Given the things I've seen some people pull off, I'm no longer sure I could even detect some of the more subtle methods of tampering with letters.

Perception Take 20 inspecting it for tampering = 21, not that I think it matters.

A slight smile comes across her face as she reads. "This should prove to be quite interesting, indeed." After having read her missive twice, she puts the envelope and contents away.

She then sits back and waits for Rataji to start his briefing.

Agent 322 looks at her powdered fingers, and sugar sprinkled robe from TOO MANY BEIGNETS. She gives her lips an experimental lick, and tastes sugar. Oh dear. What a way to start a mission briefing. She sighs.

"Sorry, would like to freshen up a bit. This really isn't appropriate," as she waves her sugar coated fingers.

Without waiting for anyone to reply, she scoots off to the restroom.

She cleans herself up at the washbasin, then enters the cubicle, and closes and locks the door behind her. She takes out the glassy, hexagonal pad from beneath her robes, and uses the sound of the flushing water closet to mask her spellcasting.

She mutters in Aklo in a high pitched sing song voice and extends her magical senses towards the hexagonal pad.

Aklo:
"Hexagonal pad that we see, reveal all your secrets at the count of three!"

Taking 10 for total of 17, +2 more if elf bonus for identifying magic item applies.

If knowledge arcana, take 10 for 15.

GM, the info I wish to know is this:
1) What would consist of a suitable host? Does the subject have to be alive, special conditions to be attached (I.e 1 hour long surgical process that subject needs to be unconscious throughout) or is it to be attached on a corpse?
2) What is the effect once attached and activated, and how is activation done?

She then contemplates about the lantern. Would it be possible to consume the souls trapped in the lantern so they would join the Many for all eternity?

Taking 10 for DC 15 knowledge arcana.

She then ponders about Aram Zey.

Taking 10 for DC 10 knowledge local (untrained). To recognise Aram Zey on sight.

She then hides the hexagonal pad in her robes, comes out of the cubicle, washes her hands at the washbasin and rejoins the party at the table, now sugar-free."Apologies on the delay."

322 tries to discern what the thing does, but it is far too power for her. The magic is powerful indeed. She seems to recall something about an Aram Zey, a Vudrani wizard that is currently the Society's Master of Spells. She'd recognize him in a heartbeat.

I was deliberately waiting for everyone to read their sealed notes. I didn't realize that these were mission briefings we'd already seen!

"Patience, Marnarius. There is indeed a group mission, one worthy of our combined talents." Rataji's deep and pleasant voice rumbles, and he spreads his hands wide.

"My friends, we are here today to change history, and to strike at the heart of old enemies, the Pathfinder Society. Hundreds of Aspis agents and sympathizers are assembling throughout Absalom in preparation for an attack on the Grand Lodge itself. Most of these teams are in position to sow chaos, lure the Pathfinders’ attention elsewhere, and keep the rest of Absalom from interceding.

"One: Infiltrate the Grand Lodge, using the festival and throngs of unfamiliar faces to cover your movements." He glances at Mister Z and grins. "Sounds right up your alley. Perhaps you can even cater the event."

He pauses, raising a second finger. "Two: Gather what additional information we need, meet with any informants our team knows about, and lay the groundwork for our assault. For this part, we may split into smaller groups if necessary." He looks around the team. "Let me know if you have any suggestions for contacts, or if you wish any help negotiating with them. The third finger raises. "Three: Our cue to enter Skyreach—the towering stronghold the Society thinks unassailable—is a speech given by Master of Swords Marcos Farabellus. Agents will start ushering Pathfinders toward one of the lawns and pouring drinks for a toast, giving us a fairly generous window to get inside."

He looks to the whole team. "We'll handle any opposition, open the gateway, and welcome our allies from inside the demiplane." He looks appraisingly at the odd elf girl, and nods. "Vara, perhaps we can do that together? I understand you have a certain... affinity for the planes beyond mortal ken. We'll make sure that they have some sense of where they’re going." He gives a feral grin. "I'm sure the society will revel in such uninvited guests joining in the festivities!"
