Hunter in the Mist - Round 1 - continued
With Touchy a bloody puppet in the hands of the annis hag, Sindelle rushes into action. Her Life Link allows her to absorb some of the wounds from the slashing claws of the hag, and she is able to give a special touch to the grappled cleric which heals him of of a good chunk of his damage. Further, Sindelle's second spell makes Touchy even harder to hold onto.
His humor not damaged by the big attack, and his vitality partially restored by the life oracle, Touchy is just able to slip away from the annis hag's grapple. He then casts his own spell, which seems to have little effect on the monstrous hag. Sighing a bit, Touchy draws his shield and steps back from the terrible monster.
Need actions from Valandil and Stugbu. They are on the clock. I impose a 24-hr rule in combat, and then I will DM-PC you to the best of my ability. Wit, I see your action, but it doesn't fire until end of Round 1, so hang on a bit. If you want to use arrows to show where you'd like to move, you can. For now, you are still in place. You'll have chance to retcon that action if circumstances change before you go.

Stugbu |
"'Scuse me!" Stugbu grunts as he tries to move past the inconveniently placed Bourze and his guard. Drawing his falchion as he approaches, the half-orc calls out to the hag in a gruff voice.
"Ugly lady, get hands off stinky guy! He not that good, but me know that you very bad!"

Hunter in the Mist - Round 1 - concluded
As Touchy works his way free, Valandil begins calling upon his arcane powers to bring aid to the side of the Pathfinders. His spell is complex, however, and it takes time to fully enchant the rites.
Stugbu meanwhile works his way through the crowd to near the annis hag, drawing his falchion back out as he comes. He shouts insulting words at the hag, who whips her head around at the half-orc, grimacing in anger.
Her anger makes her shaken for 2 rounds.
Bourtze is spooked by the smashing entry of the hag, and runs as far away as possible.
To your chagrin, the "soldier" that you just let into the inn, let's out a painful scream, and shifts shape back into a second annis hag, cackling crazily as she does so. The new foe steps closer to Valandil, ready to tear the caster to pieces next turn.
End of Round 1
Surprised? I didn't think so...
Wit Stills |
I think to be most fair, I would have changed to attack the new hag since I knew it didn't seem right, but we'll keep the same missed trip attack.
I knew it!
Wit turns and runs toward the hag, veering at the last minute and sticking out a leg to try to trip the new enemy. He misses but continues to run by, circling to the other side of the room.
DM DoctorEvil |
Hunters in the Mist - Round 2 - continued
Wit spins and rushes the newly unveiled hag, trying to trip her as he springs by at rapid speed. The little monk curses under his breath as he ends up a good distance from the fight.
Red Hag turns on Stugbu, who is mouthing off to it, and steps up, flanking with her partner, on attacks against the half-orc. The foul mouth and wicked claws all hit the paladin, including the skin-shredding rend attack. Stugbu gets seriously hurt.
Stugbu takes 49hp dmg, but I think Sindelle has Life Link with him, so she takes 5 of his damage. Think that leaves the half-orc with 5 hp...Sindelle, Touchy, and Valandil are up.
Red Hag Bite, shaken: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 13 - 2 = 29

Valandil Anwamanë |
Valandil finishes his spell, and a large grizzly bear appears behind the second hag.
It immediately attacks the horrible creature.
claw attack,flank: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 22 plus grab

claw#2 damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
bite damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Valandil's own action for the turn is going to depend on whether the bear managed to grab the Hag.
I'm guessing that did not manage a grapple. So Val will step back 5' and use his staff of entwined servants, to avoid attracting an AOO
The elf steps back and raises his staff, a pair of snakes, one white and one black leap from each end and fly towards the hag.

Sindelle Lifewater |
Sindelle absorbs some of the injuries Touchy and Stugbu have taken (you each heal 5 and she takes 10) and takes a five foot step back so she's next to Valandil. ps I think you use the staff's caster level not you own but with that roll it may not matter if they have sr :(
She mutters words in celestial as a cool refreshing wind seems to swirl around her thin white dress for a moment before bursting out in a veil of healing energy that avoids both hags!
Selective channel to heal: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4) = 7 (excluding the hags and fey foundling Sindelle heals +6 on top of this)
Stugbu, Touchy, Wit, Valandil remember that once per day you can take 6 extra healing if you choose from this feat I have but you have to say so[/b]
gm: Sindelle was -5 damage then life link this round took her to -15 then channel +13 so she's now only taken 2 damage
Stugbu |
"AGGGGGGHHHHH!" Stugbu roars as he is completely savaged by the horrible hag. A savage look comes into his eyes but softens a little again as he accepts the welcome healing from Sindelle. Stugbu will take the extra 6hp, thanks!
"Dawnflower give me strength so I can teach nasty lady to stop being so bad!" The half-orc calls on the grace of his god to give himself the strength to strike down his attacker.
"STOP BEING BAD!!"

Bypass DR, AC vs. Hag +3
Touchy |
Valandil, the bear would get the +2 for flanking, on his CMB rolls as well.
Also, it doesn't look like you applied the strength bonus from Augment Summoning to its CMB... should be 2 higher for that also.
So both those grabs would be 4 higher, I think. So the 2nd one might manage it.
Touch scowls, as not only does the first hag resist his divine glory, but a second one joins the fray. His annoyance is temporarily soothed by the exhilarating wave of healing energy that washes off of Sindelle.
Sure, might as well take the extra 6 hp! Up to 47/50 now
"Oh ya..." He says. "That's the stuff."
He then turns his attention back to the hag, calling on the vengeful might of the Savored Sting, before stepping in and slapping the creature across the behind.

(Oh, and SR: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22)
Valandil Anwamanë |
Oh good point on the STR for CMB and flanking bonus. Either way I've made the MM rolls now, but if the hag was grappled, he would have moved away to get a bit more distance. Wizards use their own level for staves - although I agree this is a bit of an unusual staff so its not 100% clear whether that would be the case with this one.

Hunters in the Mist - Round 2 - concluded
Sindelle steps back from the dangerous foe, and after absorbing damage from her allies, she channels positive energy, reviving and restoring some of the health of her and the Pathfinders.
His serious wounds eased a bit by the healing of Sindelle, Stugbu declares the Red Hag a challenger and proceeds to step into to attack it in the name of Sarenrae. He drives his weapon into the hag's hide with enough force to wound it.
Valandil's summons spell finishes, bringing forth a large bear that appears behind the other hag, attacking furiously. The two claws hit the foe, but cannot grab it, and the thick hide of the hag resists some of the damage. The bite misses. The arcane caster then raises his wand to send magic missiles flying at the foe, but they seem to have no effect against her.
On the bear's turn it is not flanking with anything, as Stugbu has moved earlier in the count. The magic missile did not defeat SR. Technically, you are not out of range of AoO due to reach from Blue but using a wand does not provoke, unless there's something special about this wand in particular.
Touchy lives up to this name, casting a divine spell that inflicts damage on the hag, who cannot resist the effect this time.
The Blue Hag turns on the ursine summons that scratched her with all her fury. The hag's claws rend the flesh of the bear, while the massive jaws bite down with fury. The bear lets out a great cry of pain as it gives up nearly all its life, barely hanging on.
End of Round 2
The bear takes 51 dmg, leaving it with 1 hp.

Closing his eyes for just a moment, Wit steels himself for his next move. Then he sprints along the edge of the bar before moving to the other side of the hag, trying to roll into its legs.
Swift Action: Use 1 Ki point to increase AC to 27

Valandil Anwamanë |
The bear, desperately, tries to rend the hag and wraps it up in a massive bear hug. It hopefully will be grappled for those rolls, giving others an easier time hurting it.

Valandil himself looks horrified that the creature is resistant to magic. "Spell resistance..." he murmurs in awe. He turns his own magic on the second hag, hoping to finish it off quickly.
caster level check: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6
But his staves missiles fail to overcome that beasts resistances as well. Cautiously he steps further away.
DM DoctorEvil |
GM, when the bear attacked, it was flanking with Valandil (not stugbu), I believe... Val stepped away afterwards.
Also, Wit's Underfoot Adept archetype, allows him to count as one size larger / 4 levels. So currently, he's counted as a medium creature for tripping.
We're going to move on without the benefit of the flanking. It won't matter in the long run and I'm not walking us back that far. If you'd use arrows to indicate your proposed movement, instead of just moving, that'd make it a bit easier. Thanks for the info on Wit's archetype.

Hunters in the Mist - Round 3 - continued
Wit slips around an overhand slash from the Blue Hag which catches his clothing, tearing them a bit, but does not get his flesh. The halfling's leg whip takes the Blue Hag to the floor, prone.
Red Hag is hurt bad, but tries to fight through it, keeping its eyes on Stugbu who has some celestial protection against it. As such, the bite and one of the claws miss, the paladin, but he is hit by one of the raking claws, and a long bloody scratch runs down his face.
Blue is prone. Red hits Stugbu for 13hp dmg. The additional AC saved him from another hit and the rend. Valandil has already posted but Sindelle and Stugbu also have actions first.

Sindelle will adjust five feet to the side as her life link absorbs more of Stugbu injuries (Stugbu heals 5 I take 5) as her eyes flutter once more channeling selective positive energy to heal herself and her allies including the summoned bear!
Selective channel to heal: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1) = 10 (excluding the hags and fey foundling Sindelle heals +6 on top of this)
Stugbu |
"Thank you!" Stugbu says softly, either to Sindelle or his god Sarenrae once can't be sure, most likely to both. He then raises his sword once again for another powerful smite, trying to finish off the evil hag who's inflicted so much pain upon him.
Smite attack: 1d20 + 12 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 12 + 3 = 28
Smite damage: 2d4 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (1, 1) + 8 + 5 = 15
He then turns to grin at the other hag. "That's what happens to bad, nasty ladies who don't want to be good! You want to change your mind now?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Yeah, I know that's not going to work, but Stugbu would try.

"The nasty ones are always good." Touchy assures Stugbu, with a grin.
I think red will be down now, but just in case...
Cast Defensively vs DC 19: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Hunters in the Mist - Round 3 - concluded
Sindelle continues to sponge damage from her allies, and offers more positive energy to keep them on their feet.
Despite his injuries, Stugbu keeps fighting, driving his falchion hard into the Red Annis Hag. His righteous smite is enough to end that evil foe, who falls with a crash through on of the tables of the Devil's Fork.
Valandil's bear, with its health a bit restored from Sindelle's channel, assaults the now prone Blue Annis Hag. The bear succeeds in hitting with all of its attacks and is able to hold the prone hag fast with its mighty claws. Valandil's spell again fails to injure the remaining hag, much to his frustration.
Touchy gives Stugbu a "good touch" healing most of his injuries and moving closer to the other fallen hag.
Prone and grappled, attacks the bear, trying to slay it first before worrying about the others. Despite being prone and grappled, the hag shreds the bear, ending its grapple as it disappears to the place it was summoned from. The hag remains prone.
End of Round 3
Think the bear had 11 hp left and she did way at least 18 with just two attacks. Touchy can move his reserved right spaces.

Claw 1, dmg: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Valandil Anwamanë |
"Alas valiant servant!" sighs Valandil, mourning the loss of the bear, though knowing it was only for a short time.
He continues to see if his staff can overcome the creatures resistance, confident that his allies have the battle well under control now.
CL: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 2 = 25
"Ah hah! Worked it out."
A snake of light and another of darkness leap from each end of his staff, and slam into the hag on the ground.
MM: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 4) + 2 = 10
Stugbu |
"Nasty is good?" Stugbu looks confused for a moment at Touchy's strange comment, instinctively flinching away a little at the close contact and whisper in his ear. "Ah...thank you. I will." the half-orc still remembers his manners as he receives another burst of magical healing, then does as he's told, charging forward to finish off the last, nasty old lady.

Hunters in the Mist - Round 4 - concluded
With his summoned bear destroyed, Valandil fires yet another blast from his wand at the prone hag. This time his magic is potent enough to damage the monstrous creature, but she fights on.
Prompted by Touchy, Stugbu leaps forward to the prone hag, driving his falchion through her heart, pinning her to floor as she dies painfully and loudly.
End of Combat
That started out as an ugly combat, but you managed to overcome the hags without too much trouble. Should be the last combat of the day, so you can return your daily abilities and perhaps heal some as needed before next fight.
DM DoctorEvil |
After it's clear that the last hag is truly dead, Bourtze steps forward. "Thank the Inheritor for your presence here. The jester sent those killers after me and my men, and I am the only one to escape them in the blasted mist. You must be the Pathfinders I was expecting! Thank you again!"
The man is clearly shaking, his voice quavering and a tremble still visible in his hands as he speaks.
Touchy |
The power of frottage!
Touchy's totally taking credit for that crit =)
Touchy picks up his whip, from where he dropped it, a look on his face that's part satisfaction, part disappointment, and part annoyance.
"Cinnamon." He says quietly, as he gives the nearby remains of the hag a malevolent look.
As the man, Bourtze, comes back out of hiding, the guarded look he gives him is not much friendlier.
"It is never good to upset the Lady in the Room." He says, smiling, though the gesture is not reflected in his eyes. "Who is this Jester person? I think I might like to pay him a visit. Invite him to join me in some prayer."
Valandil Anwamanë |
Valandil quickly scans the rooms, and the dead hags for signs of magic.
"That could have been nasty. I'm just glad that Yos turned up to help me out. Those hags were powerful fighters... which is odd, as I thought hags normaly relied on magic.."
Detects magic
Stugbu |
Stugbu looks up from the dead hag and joins Touchy as he talks to the Bourtze guy. "Why you not help us in fight? You weak or just coward?". The look in the half-orc's eyes suggest he is sincere in the question.
Sindelle Lifewater |
Sindelle absorbs a bit more (5hp) of Stugbu's injuries, letting her eyes flutter a bit as she calms her breathing from the combat that seems to have excited her, even! She comes over and puts a delicate hand on Stugbu's arm giving it a gentle squeeze. "Now now let's not let adrenaline make us say things that we do not mean. Lord Bourtze is the ruler of these lands and not a soldier like us."
Bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 (DC 15 to pass a secret message to Stugbu trying telling him to not anger the person we were sent to get things from well nevermind then! :P)
She also extends a hand to Bourtze's cheek if he will let her. "We are indeed the pathfinders, Tribune. Are you injured? I can tend to you if you require my services." Then after he speaks "Who is this jester and why would he want you dead? ...and how powerful is he if he can command creatures like this to send for you?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18 (to make nice with the tribune why dice why?)
Stugbu |
Stugbu looks down at Sindelle and nods. "You right. Stugbu sorry! Nasty ladies almost kill us and it make me mad!" He turns to Bourtze and gives him a big tusky smile. "...but me still want to know what going on?"
Diplomacy (aid): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
DM DoctorEvil |
Bourtze exhales, still nervous and begins to answer your questions. "After my wife died, friends sent entertainers and other diversions to distract the household in its grief. That's when Sabas arrived, begging a place. He seemed a simpleminded innocent, a natural fool with a gift for ridiculous nonsense. But clearly, he was a spy by my enemies." He sniffs, a bloom of red anger visible in his face as he speaks of it.
Yes! Only the scum of House Disaren are so brazen! Our two houses have longed to destroy one another for centuries. The Disaren are justly infamous; this horror would be nothing new for them." He pounds a mailed fist on the table to punctuate his words.
"What did this Sabas do at the direction of House Disaren, you ask?" At this point, he's in love with the sound of his own voice, sounding very self-righteous and wounded. "Well, I'll tell you! They sent Sabas here to steal my family's most valuable relic. This very night we found the urn stolen! My guards and I almost caught the thief, but he unleashed those murderous creatures against us. They killed all my men and pursued me back here. But now, I am safe thanks to you! Even if my most valuable possession is stolen."
Valandil Anwamanë |
"What is this possession that they stole?" asks Valandil.
"And why did he steal it?"
Wit Stills |
Sense Motive to see if he might be hiding anything from his story: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
"Are you sure there's no one else who could have sent him besides House Disaren? No other enemies you can think of? We would hate to go after the wrong people for this terrible injustice."
Those last few words don't hide Wit's distaste for this man.
Sindelle Lifewater |
Sindelle smiles at Stugbu warmly, whispering "it's okay." to him in Orc.
She then quiets to listen to the tribune's tale, also trying to scrutinize.
Sense motive: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
"My condolences about your wife, my lord...but please, if we are to help you before the trail gets too cold to follow, you must focus on the task at hand and my companions' questions. We also have interest in recovering that which was stolen from you so we must know all this Sabas took."
Valandil Anwamanë |
"And why you think he took it." adds Valandil.
"What is the root cause of the rift between your families?"
Stugbu |
"Yeah, and where we find this Jester guy?" Stugbu joins in the questioning. "You coming with us, or staying at home?"
DM DoctorEvil |
Bourtze looks a little bewildered as the questions fly in from all directions. You don't know the man well, but you don't sense mistruth in his story. It seems to Wit that he is telling the whole truth, or enough of it that matters at least.
"Why did the damned jester steal from me? I think I just told you, he was put up to it by the Disaren. This is Taldor, my friend. These family slights go back centuries and the vendettas are never ending. My grandfather hated the Disaren, my father hated the Disaren, and I hate them. That's reason enough! It's bad enough that my dominion is on the decline, but now my bloodsworn enemy has stolen my House's prized possessions!" He continues to be demonstrably angry.
"Sabas stole three items from my manor. They were all hidden in a vault, protected by magical guardians, but somehow he learned how to bypass the vault's defenses. Inside was a magical urn, dreaded for its dark power to issue forth horrors -- like these hags here. Also, a mace that drives its possessor to murderous madness, and lastly a necklace that throttles anyone who dons it."
To Stugbu he says, "After his theft the jester ran, west along the abandoned canal. He'll then turn north to the Disaren lands at the northernmost point of the Thistleridge Barrens. An old road that leads across the Alycean Valley meets the canal there."
The Tribune pauses thinking for a moment. "You were sent here to negotiate with me for release of some old texts, yes? If you will retrieve my heirlooms from Sabas, I will sweeten the deal with some additional antiquities that I had not offered to Aram Zey before. I beg you to help me! My men are slain, and my power does not reach as it used to. I must have your help.!" He pulls an emerald studded brooch from his vest pocket and tosses it on the table. "It is yours if you leave after him quickly."
Valandil Anwamanë |
"Your prized heirlooms are three cursed items?" asks Valandil, thoroughly bemused by the human.
"I'm sure there is a good story as to how that happened, and I look forward to hearing it. But maybe not just now. "
Turning to the others he suggest "I would seem time is of the essence if we are to retrieve these heirlooms."
DM DoctorEvil |
The Tribune frowns at Valandil. "They are heirlooms more from how they were acquired, not for their absolute use. My ancestors, centuries ago, during Qadira's treacherous invasion, captured a trove of magical relics from the Satrap's stupid soldiers. The alabaster urn was part of that hoard, a vessel in which were trapped hideous beasts of inhuman power and malice. My family guarded this dangerous relic as much as anything. Now it is in the agent of the bloody Disaren and anything can happen! The other items have similar stories."
He agrees that time is of the essence. The jester has a head start of several hours.
Should you agree to take up the chase for the jester Sabas, a Survival check might help find his trail. Failing that, you can spend 1d6+6 hours asking around the village for signs of his passage.
Valandil Anwamanë |
Valandil will help search for tracks.
"I know a little about tracking, but have no real talent for it..

"Reap what you sow." Touchy says, with a smirk, after hearing of the tribune's troubles.
Everyone's aiding... but no one actually is trained in the skill to lead those aids =)
He seems in a good mood as they try to figure out which way to go, though lets the others go about figuring out which way that is.
Valandil Anwamanë |
Valandil is trained, and will lead if necessary, but in PBP I was trying to indicate that if there was a more skilled person to lead, then he'd help. If nobody is trained then that can be the lead roll.
Stugbu |
"I lost him at Jester ran away" Stugbu scratches his head. "You guys know which way to go?"
Survival (try not to hinder): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Does that comment after the combat about daily abilities resetting still hold?
DM DoctorEvil |
With no one trained enough in woodcraft or tracking to pick up the Jester's trail the group is relegated to moving in the right general direction and stopping at each passing traveler or farmhouse to ask if they've seen the relic thief pass by. Progress is slow at taking 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 hours of time.
By then, a few of you have slept or studied your spells, catching a bit of shut eye. By the middle of the afternoon, you have a pretty good idea of the Jester's path and location and set out in earnest.
I'll allow you to reset daily abilities and change spells if a prepared caster.
One of the villagers said they say a shady character leaving the Bondstones headed out of town last night in the mist. The Bondstones are a set of ruins of a shrine to Sarenrae along the old canal, generally in the right direction of the Jester is heading to the Disaren lands as indicated by Tribune Bourtze. Many villagers still surreptitiously visit the place seeking the forbidden goddess' blessing.
Heading to that place, you see that shattered ruins loom up through the mist, limestone walls covered in ornate carvings. One massive slab depicts a radiant figure blessing a pair of worshipers. The remains of a small campfire stain an adjacent wall with smoke. Above the coals, a roast snake dangles from a stick, badly burnt.
