When everyone is ready, Bon Jon opens the door, sword in hand.

Season of Ghosts

Now prepared to confront Zamir and put an end to his crimes, you all gather around Bon Jon as he opens the door - which, luckily, isn't locked or otherwise barred.

The door opens into a room that is nicely decorated and comfortably furnished, unlike the rest of the complex. Cushioned chairs create a comfortable sitting area, and a large tapestry depicting a battle of dozens of dervishes in a bright yellow sandy desert adds color to the room. The air is scented with cinnamon and trophy heads and animal skins decorate the floor and remaining walls. From this room, two other open archways can be seen - one to the north and one to the south.

Perception (DC 10):

With the way that the tapestry rests against the wall, you can see the outline of a man-sized opening behind it.

"Yantur, I specifically told you not to disturb me while I'm working," comes a voice from beyond the southern archway, the tone light and the manner of speech rather languid and relaxed. "Does this mean that you wish to volunteer as Jumra's playm-" The speaker stops as a soft rumbling sound is heard, a very low growl.

"Who's there? It's no good hiding; Jumra's already got your scent," comes the voice again, the tone still light but now with an undercurrent of tension. "Come, let's have a chat like civilized people."

Bon Jon points to the tapestry. "Have a care friends, there is an opening large enough for a person behind that tapestry," he whispers to his companions.

In a louder voice, to Zamir, Bon Jon replies, "Aye, a civilized chat sounds quite fine to us as well - we are most interested to learn more of your plans and motivations, and just what it is that the Aspis have offered you to lead you on such an unwise course."

Bon Jon moves into the room (unless that's jumping the gun)

Again, Bartimaeus leaves the negotiations to his more convincing companions. Put me in a war room and my words carry weight. I can plan the defense of a town, repel the attacks of invaders with ease. I'm afraid these tense social situations are best served by those with the talents to do so.

Season of Ghosts

There's a slight pause after Tupp makes his firm but calm and surprisingly cheery demand for surrender.

"I...see. A moment, then, so that we may continue this chat face-to-face," the voice replies and there's a slight shuffling and creaking of furniture. Slowly, a Vudrani man dressed in fine blue silks steps into view. Though both hands are held up and in sight, Tupp and the rest of you can see that he holds the fake Sceptre of the Arclords in one of them. Large yellow eyes catch the light just behind him as Jumra rises to her feet to join her master - though not yet fully grown, the tigress is easily the size of a wolf and watches the group warily.

"Ah, so the Thakur has sent outsiders to see to me, rather than his own men?" Zamir marvels as his eyes move to each of you that he can see. To the surprise of some of you, he actually smiles - a broad, genuine slight of glee. "Haha! Wonderful! My legend and renown is such that not even the forces of the mighty Thakur suffice to face me!"

"Still, I am no fool and I can see that I currently do not share the company of fools, either. The slaves, the raids...all part of building my legend, yes, but neither of those things are hills that I wish to die upon," Zamir continues, calming himself somewhat. "I wish to be famous in life, not in death. Through means unknown to me you've succeeded in finding me here and either cutting through all of my men or cowing them enough that they fled rather than face you. You've gotten the best of me and I do applaud your efforts!" As if to prove his point, Zamir offers a brief burst of applause. "You may take what you wish - the slaves, the coin, the supplies, if only you allow Jumra and myself to leave this place unharmed. Surely a more than fair arrangement, yes?"
________

Koani & Bart, feel free to adjust yourselves on the map as you like but I'm assuming all of you have crowded inside the first room or close to it. You can see Zamir and his tiger for sure! Also, remember you've got a little leeway in how you handle Zamir. The Thakur's men want him but the Pathfinder Society is a little more neutral on the matter as you can either get rid of him or try to convince him to switch sides - as long as he's not a Society problem anymore, they'll be happy.

No, I think we should hand him over to our new friends from the road. This man needs to face justice." Poor Jumra, held in the grip of Koani's spell, can only flatten her ears against her head and paw at the ground in confusion - her master needs help but this new friend seemed nice too and why is there blood and steel why what do what do?

But mercifully, Jumra doesn't agonize over it for long as Tupp comes racing into the room past Bon Jon and delivers his custom ANKLEBITER ATTACK to Zamir, sending more blood flying as the would-be bandit lord collapses to the ground. Season of Ghosts

While Koani leads the rather confused and mildly agitated Jumra back towards the surface, the rest of you set about binding and gagging the injured and groggy Zamir. Once that's been done, you're able to give Zamir's quarters a thorough inspection. While his bedchamber yields nothing of note, you do discover the keys to slaves' collars as well as a box of miscellaneous components within the small office - most likely what remains of the last batch of stolen magical goods. On the man himself, you find a well-crafted suit of leather armor, a wickedly sharp scimitar, and a potion. Further study reveals these items to be +1 Leather Armor, a +1 Scimitar and a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds.

Oddly enough, when you go to investigate the mysterious opening behind the tapestry, all you find is a rough tunnel that leads some 20 feet or so to a dead end. Considering the layout of the old temple above you and the surrounding terrain, you'd estimate that the end of the tunnel probably lies only a few feet from the outside surface. Aside from the strange tunnel and the items in Zamir's office and on his person, there seems to be nothing else of interest or use to be found.
__________

When Koani passes back through the slave workshop with Jumra, all four of the mages let out great whoops of joy.

"Free! We're saved! Thank you, brave ones!" they all cry, causing Jumra to flinch from all the sudden noise. Assured that the rest of the group will be along very soon with the keys to their shackles, the mages are content to wait while Koani proceeds up and out with the young tigress.

Outside, and a safe distance into the jungle from the old temple, Koani speaks a few words of comfort and encouragement to the bewildered Jumra. As she does, something within the animal seems to shift slightly...her pupils narrow and her ears, flattened against her skull, slowly perk up. Jumra looks up, great yellow eyes meeting small elven ones...and a look of understanding passes between them. Then, with a soft chuffing sound, Jumra turns away and takes a hesitant step into the jungle. And another. And then another. And as Koani watches, the tigress slowly slips away into the dense foliage and disappears.

Season of Ghosts

As Koani traces her steps back towards the old temple, the rest of the group rises from the depths with the four freed mages in tow. They blink, momentarily blinded by the bright light of the sun, but then as their eyes adjust they're all smiles from ear to ear.

"Thank you again, kind strangers," the lady-mage remarks, tilting her head back to enjoy the warmth of the sun on her face. "We all probably would have rotted away down there if you'd not shown up. How can we ever repay you?"

"That's a very good question!" a familiar voice calls out and you all turn to see Phalgun and his men heading up the sloping hill towards the temple's front entrance, Ganesh and Lasya not far behind them. "It seems you've met with success beyond anything we could have expected," Phalgun continues, clapping Bon Jon and Styrian on the shoulder when he reaches the group, also grinning from ear to ear. "Tell me, what happened? How did you do it?"

"Yeah, I don't think Zamir is very popular among his men." Tupp agrees, "We didn't even have to scare the monks to abandon their posts, we just asked nicely." He waves at Ganesh and Lasya, then steps forward and extends his hand to shake Phalgun's. "He's all yours, as promised."

Once everyone has been reunited, Tupp approaches the group of mages. "I couldn't possibly ask for anything from you guys." He says to the lady-mage. "Oh, but would you like to come back with us to Padiskar? I'm sure the Society will have somewhere you guys can stay for a bit while you get your lives back together."

The odd tunnel piques Bon Jon's curiosity, and he searches it carefully in case there is a secret door or something else of interest.

When Zamir wakes, he questions him about the tunnel. "What were you using this tunnel for?"

...

When the group is reunited with Phalgun and his men, Bon Jon watches them, Ganesh and Lasya, as well as Zamir himself, very carefully, trying to judge whether there is anything beneath the surface of their interactions.

"What my companions have stated is the truth. Several have struck off on the path to redemption instead of the Boneyard," Bartimaeus adds in.

"I ask of you all that you take some time to rest and pursue your own interests for a few days. Once you have digested past events and have come to terms with the current state of your reality, then I implore you to live your lives as upstanding citizens who are kind to strangers and willing to stand against the unjust circumstances of others," he says, a mixture of a request and a lecture all in one.

Season of Ghosts

Slightly Earlier...

Zamir's still in pretty poor shape but is alert and conscious enough to respond to Bon Jon's question...well, sort of, considering his gag. With a resigned expression he raises his bound hands and mimes the action of using magic. It may seem a bit strange to Bon Jon and the rest of the group but when you reunite with Koani and explain the presence of the tunnel and Zamir's miming, she recalls that magic exists that is capable of weakening earth and stone - surmising that the tunnel could have been meant to provide a rather unorthodox means of escape for the bandit leader.

Now

"I think that can be arranged," the lady mage replies to Bartimaeus with a rather bemused but sincere expression. "And if your Society or friends can offers us aid or even just a place to stay for a night or two, we'd be most appreciative," she continues with a bow to the group. "Oh - and I realize that we never got each other's names. Sananda Florez - and my companions are Baalash, Omkar, and Sameer."

Having listened to the brief rundown on what happened inside the old temple, Phalgun nods, looking quite impressed. "It seems you've accomplished much here today. While I don't know that I would have allowed any of Zamir's accomplices to go free had I been in your shoes, I do respect that you were able to get in and bring him down with a minimum amount of bloodshed."

Phalgun then turns to the bound and gagged Zamir, his expression growing cold. "Ah, Zamir...it seems you have much to answer for! Fortunately for you, it is a long way to Niswan so you will have plenty of time to think about each and every decision that led you to this point." Zamir simply gazes back at the lawman, his expression sullen.

"Ah...no matter," Phalgun shrugs, turning back to the group. "I am afraid that this is where we must part ways. You head back to Padiskar, yes? Niswan is in the opposite direction, much further to the south from here. We will take Zamir off your hands and deliver him to the Thakur's judgement - and make no mistake, my friends, we will be sure to tell him of all the good you've done for our kingdom this day."

Season of Ghosts

And so goodbyes are said, with Phalgun and his men taking the bound Zamir and turning to the south while the rest of you, with Ganesh and Lasya and Sananda and her friends, turn your feet and gazes to the east - to Padiskar. The return trip takes another two days or so but is blessedly uneventful and actually rather enjoyable despite the ever-oppressive heat of the jungle; Sananda and her friends spend much time discussing magical theory with Bartimaeus while Ganesh and Lasya regale the group with fantastical tales of brave princesses, powerful villains, and beggars with hearts of gold.

You return to find Padiskar the same as you left it, the ocean water glittering brightly under the early-morning sun. Quickly, you make your way to the Pathfinder lodge to report to Venture-Captain Mihir. While surprised to see you back sooner than expected - and with several new faces in tow - he seems quite pleased as you give your report on all that has happened since the morning you set out into the jungle.

"Ahahaha! Fantastic!" Mihir laughs, clapping his hands delightedly. "While there may be some among us who would lament the loss of Zamir as a potential ally, I myself am pleased to know that he will soon face the Thakur himself! Our organization could not ask for better publicity - and for each of you, I am certain the Thakur's personal favor will be earned. How fortuitous that you should run into his men out there in the jungle!"

Mihir leans back in his seat and sighs a sigh of deep satisfaction. "You have all done well. It will be a few days before I can arrange passage for you back to Absalom so please, relax and enjoy the remainder of your time here in Padiskar - you've more than earned a rest."

Tupp gives Mihir a respectful bow, "It was our pleasure, Sir! Stopping banditry, wherever it may be, is kind of what I was born to do. I just hope that with Zamir off to meet the Thakur, others will think twice before taking up a life of crime." He looks around proudly at his new friends and smiles. "I think I'm going to like working for the Pathfinder Society. Thanks, guys, for making me feel so welcome on this mission, despite my inexperience."

Easter Egg...

Tupp wipes his sweaty brow with the back of his hand, brushing some of the curly hair out of his eyes. "I know I need to practice on moving targets, Sor, but do you think this is really- Heeya!" He takes a quick step back and slices the incoming back of flour in half with an overhand swing of his katana. "What else do you suggest, Tupp?" Asks Sori as she flies back to the pile of bags 20 yards away. "I can't lift anything heavier, and I'm certainly not getting anywhere near that sword of yours, no matter how much protection I wear." She picks up the small bag of flour and starts flying in circles around her charge. "I don't know..." Tupp says, holding his sword out and tracking Sori's motions, trying his best not to be distracted by the beautiful coastal view and sunset. "Do you think Bartimaeus could animate a dummy like that one in Zamir's hideout? Just think how much that would help my technique! SUPER DRAAAAGON S- Ack Blaagh." The flour explodes all over his face, prompting amused twittering from Sori as she lands on his shoulder. "That's what you get for shouting out those ridiculous names before you strike. Come on, let's find Bartimaeus before he leaves for Absalom and ask him. As amusing as this is, my wings are going to ache for days."

Tupp sheathes his sword and starts making his way back down the hill towards Padiskar. He has already decided to stick around Jalmarey for a little while. Instead of studying in the evenings, Sori is helping him write a petition for leniency concerning Waman's role in Zamir's felonious activities. However that turns out, he plans to visit the young man's family to help out on the farm if they'll let him. "Hey, Sor... What do you think Waman's family grows, anyway? I hope it's corn, I'm good at corn..."

Thanks everyone for a great game!

Before the first night after the battle, Koani tells Blarg he has to go take a bath to wash the gore off his claws. She and Blarg end up in a water fight instead, with Koani using her hands to splash Blarg and the little dinosaur somehow squirting jets of water out of his mouth at her. At the end, Koani and Blarg end up in a little pile on the shore, Koani having trouble breathing because she is so busy laughing at the little dino's antics. "You're a very good boy, Blarg, and I love you," she tells her little friend. "You did well today." He nuzzles her neck with his cold little snout in answer.

On their way out, Styrian picks up Jumra's discarded collar. This seems a small piece of the history of this place now, it may serve me well. Between engaging the head guard in conversation about the best strategic defense of the town and consulting other mages on the intricacies of abjuration magic, Bartimaeus has enjoyed lounging on an airy, wicker chase lounge with a dense book. This is where Tupp finds him.

"You acquire assistance with training you say? My boy, you have come to the right place. I must consult with Sor and then I shall meet you at the well due west of the town proper, right as the sun touches the horizon this evening," he explains. He won't even know what hit him, haha!

Moments after Tupp arrives near the well, he hears the unmistakable cascade of hooves that is a horse galloping. He also spies what can only be sacks of flour stacked up near the well...

Just as the horse appears, a bolt comes whizzing by his face and buries itself in the well. "My boy! The first lesson is to always be ready for battle! HIYAH! HIYAH! Bartimaues shouts as he comes barreling down the dirt road astride a horse and his signature dwarven plate. As Tupp draws his sword *PUFF* a sack of flour appears to move out of no where and saps him in the chest.

"Always prepare for the unexpected Tupp! You are a fine swordsman and deceptively convincing, yet do not let the regularity of your talents or the comfort of your Paladin's code lull you into a false sense of security!" he shouts, circling the Halfling. "You and you alone have taken up the mantle, to strike down the evil you meet in this world, and to protect those who cannot protect themselves! Your opponents adhere to no such strictures and will do everything they can to use it against you!" His eyes narrow, somehow becoming even more serious. "NEVER let them."

"...and now... TO FIRST BLOOD!" he cries with finality as he charges Tupp with a blunt spear.
________

As the dust clears, Bartimaeus is on his back, huffing and puffing, a variety of nicks and cuts across his body. "Good... show... boy. Now... be a lad... and fetch me... some water!"

Bon Jon is uncharacteristically quiet as they travel back to Padiskar. I'm glad that we were able to bring that miscreant Zamir to justice, but what of those monks who were helping him? They are my brethren, and yet somehow they had fallen into a path of... well, it was not the path that I learned at the feet of my masters. Is it possible that there are evil monks? Or ones who sell their training for a few coppers? There is much to ponder here, and I feel misgivings. Truly, if my work with the Pathfinder Society can help me to defeat such miscreants, then it will be time well spent. With that, he sighs, shakes himself out of this gloomy reverie, and turns his attention to the training work that Tupp and the others are doing. He smiles, and then laughs his hearty guffaw, as he watches their antics. "Your feet, lad, your feet! What good is your sword if you don't know where your feet are?!?"
