Lead the way," Haikyu nods. "Even if the ratkin is unfriendly, it will at least put more distance between us and the Orcs." His eyes dart between the two wizards, noting that they were even worse off than he was. "We won't be able to move quickly enough like this," he mutters. Falling back a second, he stops to check on Issac. "Are you going to be able to make it to the cave? We did get a second of the potions which saved my own life."

I would appreciate that, thanks.

Isaac takes it and chugs it like a thirsty man in the desert.

Alright, the general consensus seems to check out the cave. Moving you guys to that area now.

After an hour of careful treading along the cliffside, you reach the bottom. A wide river surrounds the end of the cliff like a moat and at the end of the trail you're following is a small protusion of stone attached to a cave entrance. The gush of water is gentle and birds chirp away, unaware of the dangers this group of adventurer's had just been through.

The method of entry into the cave is yours to decide. E.g. Stealth, open announcement, fake acting, etc.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

My vote is open announcement... we are too banged up to really pass as anything other than we are, and stealth was never Raffe's strong suit.

After handing the small bottle to Haikyu Book surveys his new found companions.

"I got hit pretty hard by one of those falling rocks. But I am doing well, for my part.

He wounds his arm in a circle to feel it out.

I am going to go talk to the man at the cave, alone. After all, no one really likes orcs. He'd be better off with us than them. He could be dangerous and it would not be good for our mission if we all get surrounded at the cave. Maybe I could call for you guys if there is trouble, whistle or something."

Knowledge Ratfolk to a max of 10: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
That 12 is really a 10 because I don't have knowledge local and thus can only max out at a 10. I am at 4hp.

P.s. I missed you guys.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"That works for me, but take Xin with you as well. The chain of communication might get a little blurry from your animal companion to mine, but it is less obvious than whistling."

So saying Raffe sends an empathetic command to his raven to go with Book.

It is ok... go with the man... if there is trouble... he will pass... a message... through the other raven... to you.

Xin cocks his head to the left.

Thassilonian:
"OK. But you are going to be ok here, yes?"

Yes... I will be fine... now go please.

The raven nods and flies over to Book's shoulder.

Crucibles eyes snap open. A blue glow radiates from them.

It is time.

Just something to put me on the gameplay thread. Pay no heed until the boss says so. :P

Grand Lodge

No one entered the cave yet?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

Book Wyrm and Xin went to investigate.

Grand Lodge

Hmmm... I was looking for something more explicit but OK. Moving on.

The cave is dark and you cannot see much from the outside. Once Book steps into the entrance, his eyes adjust. The interior of the cave is a rough circle about 40ft in diameter and on the far side is a small hut. Nothing moves inside.

Grand Lodge

@Book, Knowledge results:

You recall only the stereotypical knowledge for the Ratfolk.

They are small, rodentlike humanoids; originally native to subterranean areas in dry deserts and plains, they are now more often found in nomadic trading caravans. Much like the pack rats they resemble, ratfolk are tinkerers and hoarders by nature, and as a whole are masters of commerce, especially when it comes to acquiring and repairing mechanical or magical devices.

The flaps on the door of the small hut move and the top end of a walking staff pokes out. The ratfolk uses the staff to open the flaps and peer into the intruders in his home.

"What do you want? You here to buy some weapons? Orcs like weapons..." he says grumpily with a voice so low, he might have been whispering.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

Xin sees the ratman and tries to communicate to Book through his companion.

Squalk-Talk:
"Ask your friend whether the rat-on-two-legs is friend or foe. Ask if others are needed now. Ask if should fly back and get my master."

Xin shifts uncomfortably on Book's shoulder, agitated by concern for his master.

Grand Lodge

As the others were waiting outside, they notice a body floating down river. The current is only moderately strong but it manages to drag it along the shallows until the body rests near the cave entrance, but on the other side of the 20ft wide river. It looks like a dead short, stout creature as far as you guys can tell.

That's Crucible. Percerption DC12 to see that he's still breathing. Book looks like he's busy at the moment. GMPC to move forward, but I hate monologues... Feel free to intervene you guys.

"No, we're not looking to buy weapons. We were chased down here by the orcs and are looking for shelter. Would you be able to help us?" asks Book.

The rat-man looks down as he shudders from suppressed laughter until he finally blurts out "Hahahaha! Who in their right mind would climb into Orc Haven? Everyone knows that the forest up there is under control of the last orc tribe, the Kalveshes! But enough about them, they don't come down here either... Business is business though, I can 'rent' you my cave for the night. 5gp per person, and another 1gp for every pet. It's difficult for me to chop up firewood y'know." he nods at the ravens.

Book, Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Book: It looks like he's just trying to squeeze us dry of gold. He doesn't seem like a bad type though...

"Alright, let me talk to my fellows." says Books as he turns away to go back to the others. He shares the discussion he had with the rat and his thoughts. "So... does everyone have enough gold?"

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Oh gods oh gods, do I have gold? What's this pouch?

Isaac thumbs through a tiny pouch on his hip and nods., then points to Crucible.

Should we help him? I don't think most people like swimming like that.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

"No," Haikyu says simply to Book, and cocking his head to the side, approaches the body in the water, looking at it sideways. As he moves closer, he mumbles something about preferring a tree to the cold stone of a cave anyway. Haikyu watches the body in the water for several seconds, making no move to assist it. Shrugging, he replies to Issac, "Whoever he is, he's alive."

Grand Lodge

Out of nowhere, a crow flies down on top of the unconscious body and pecks at its head, but without any response. The crow then turns its head and looks directly at Haikyu for a few moments before flapping its wings and flies away.

In the meantime Book says "Well, I have enough gold to get us for the night, unless someone can manage to barter with the rat guy?"

"I say we just tie up the rat guy and leave him to float away on the river." responds Fariza haughtily.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"I am skilled in appraising, not negotiation. Still, I can at least see if this place is worth the rent... and if someone else does have a silver tongue they might be able to use it."

Looking to the unconcious form, Raffe ponders a moment.

"Bring him too... worst case we have someone we need to kill later, best case we have found a new ally."

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

I can help people sometimes. Sometimes people need help. People should have what they need, ergo I should help people sometimes.

Isaac is shaken from his thoughts by Fariza's suggestion.

You.. You want to kill the Rat Man. Why?

Grand Lodge

"No, not kill. He doesn't seem pure enough for such an act. I just want my shelter without any rodents lurking around the corner." says Fariza.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"Maybe not, but I don't think his rates are reasonable either."

Grand Lodge

Fariza frowns and crosses her arms in front of her. "Then go make sure he doesn't poke into my bedroll then, or should I do it myself?"

As the discussion goes on and the unconscious fellow on the other side of the river stirs.

OK I may not be able to post for half the day, so...
@Crucible: consider yourself awake but dazed for the next hour (game-time). It seems I didn't make you curious enough for the others...
If anyone who wants to cross the river though, DC10 to get across the flowing river for now. Feel free to take 10.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

Well jeez. It sounded like the river was something like this.

Isaac will walk over to the not-dwarf and lightly shake him.

Taking 10

Grand Lodge

LOL but not quite. I think that's a DC 20

Issac finds that the water isn't very deep at all. In fact, the water barely comes up to his shoulder. Despite being cold, the flow of water is the only thing that makes it slightly difficult.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"Bring him to shore. If someone can get wood I can start a fire to warm and dry him off."

Raffe indicates the heavy bleeding from his head.

Forgeborn Warpriest (Forgepriest)|HP 22/22|Init+3|Perception+5|AC 20, touch 13, flat-footed 17| Fort+6,Ref+3,Will+8

The oddly colored dwarf-kin's eyes shoot open, lightly glowing blue. He jerks back from Issac's touch and attempts to right him self in the water.

swim: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5

This involves much flailing, but his steel armor pulls at him. With Issac to compare against, you can tell that this being is rather larger than your common dwarf.

swim: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

After a few moments crucible calms and plants his feet, his head rising above the water and stolidly walks to land. He grips his hammer and looks at the different people gathered.

Who are you, and with whom do you stand?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

"Currently I stand on the ground, though if I don't get some rest soon I might be buried beneath it."

Raffe half-heatedly laughs at his own joke, coughing up a bit of blood as he does so.

"I am Raffe Crymoff, devoted servant of Lissala, Mistress of Runes. My companion here is Xin. Unless you speak Thassilonian you won't find him very talkative, but I can translate for him if you need me to."

Raffe looks over the odd not-dwarf dwarf with curiosity.

"Well, you certainly win the prize for strangest of us. What are you? You are clearly not a dwarf, despite resembling one in some manners."

Grand Lodge

So... anyone planning on doing anything today?

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

Sure. ;)

While listening to the strange not-dwarf's reply, Raffe hobbles inside the cave.

Aw, it ate my post. :/

Let's get inside. There are a surprising number of orcs on our tails, and we are all in need of rest. Who are you? Raffe says you're not a dwarf, are you a derro? I remember someone telling me aboutderros, odd dwarf-like monst... creatures.

Isaac walks in gestures for the others to follow.

Grand Lodge

The ratfolk is waving his hand in front of his hut as the group enters. When he hears the rumbling footsteps, he rubs his hands together and says "Well, well, well.... It looks like there rather many of you that requires Greevy's shelter tonight. I'd like to see my gold first however..." he is now extending one hand palm up.

When Raffe sees the small hut/hovel in the end of the cave, he notices something shimmering in front of it.

@Raffe: Spellcraft check please.

Forgeborn Warpriest (Forgepriest)|HP 22/22|Init+3|Perception+5|AC 20, touch 13, flat-footed 17| Fort+6,Ref+3,Will+8

I do not know these beings you serve. I am the Crucible, servant of the Dwarven lords. I ask again do you stand for Order or Anarchy? You rat creature. Where do you stand?

Continuing on in the same vane, it becomes more apparent that the being before you is not fully cognoscente.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

Considering the strange one's question, he ponders it for a minute before replying.

"Order is often preferable to chaos. Even evil order will at least grant firm following of laws, no matter how twisted, so all know where they stand... provided, of course, that they know what said laws are. Thassilon started as a peaceful empire based on seven virtues when founded by Xin... it was the runelords that corrupted it and made it evil. Even then, though, it was a very lawful society. So, I would say that I stand for order. A new order, to be precise. One that will reawaken the lords and reclaim their power. And bind the lesser kingdoms into one mighty empire."

Grand Lodge

"I don't know what you're talking about er- dwarf, but I'll let you know that I am here for the coin. No coin, no shelter." says Greevy. He looks to the others and further extends his open hand.

Raffe doesn't know what spell it is, but he's certain there some sort of barrier around the hut. It's powerful enough that he can't identify it.

Forgeborn Warpriest (Forgepriest)|HP 22/22|Init+3|Perception+5|AC 20, touch 13, flat-footed 17| Fort+6,Ref+3,Will+8

Then perhaps I was created to shield you from harm. It is very hard to process information right now. Perhaps I misjudged the height of that cliff I jumped from. Filthy orc savages. turning to Greevy.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"Hold on, what is the deal here? Why do you have a potent barrier around your hut? What does it do? Who are you really?"

Look at him, tell me what you see.

Raffe Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Xin Percpetion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Grand Lodge

Greevy turns around and looks to Raffe as if to intimidate him, but his response bear no ill will "You think I can sell my goods to orcs without protection? They have tried again and again to raid this cave but they have lost more men than the number of spears I have sold that day before they learned their lesson. My magics protect me and my trade, that is all."

Xin notices a thick tome hanging beneath Greevy's robes when he turned around but could not discern what it is specifically.

Looking back to Crucible, he says "Now then, I do have some broken weapons that could be attended too, all non-magical of course but physically in need of repair... wait a moment." He goes back into his hut for a moment and comes back with a set of masterwork tools, a pile of spare parts, and a series of broken weapons:
- 3 javelins (DC12 each)
- 2 battleaxes (DC15 each)
- a flamberge (DC18)
- 2 masterwork warhammers (DC20 each)

"If you can manage to fix these during the night, I'll consider your group's stay here paid for. Why, I'll even provide the bedrolls next to the fire you fellows need. You'll find all the materials you need to repair these here. I use them for making armors and magical clothing but my skill on weapons is very poor I'm afraid."

Every repair attempt takes 1hr. The group can spend 12hrs in the cave to leave by dawn during the next day.
@Crucible: You can retry the repairs as long as it's within the alotted time. No need to account the cost of raw materials, just specify which rolls apply to which weapon.

Fariza moves to one side of the cave, sits down on the hard floor and leans against the wall with a sigh and closes her eyes.

Forgeborn Warpriest (Forgepriest)|HP 22/22|Init+3|Perception+5|AC 20, touch 13, flat-footed 17| Fort+6,Ref+3,Will+8

That seems a fair trade. I will do so.

There we go.

Crucible finishes with time to spare and polishes the weapons and stacks them neatly in a convenient corner. If he sees other weapons that are damaged, dirty or incomplete he continues working. If not he then draws his weapon and stands over the party facing the door for the rest of the night.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Sorcerer 1, HP: 5/8, Spells/Day: 4, AC/Touch/FF: 12/12/10, CMD: 13, Fort/Ref/Will: 2/2/2, Initiative +2, Perception: 0

Isaac looks shocked at Crucible's newly revealed abilities.

Wow, you never sleep?! That's so great! What else do you-

he realizes he is being rude and immediately stops and looks at his feet. He then shuffles off to the bedroll after thanking Crucible quietly.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

Raffe will rest and also spend the necessary one hour studying his spellbook. Will switch his spells a bit, next post will have what I take as a spoiler labeled spells. Next post will be in character... at work so time to post is a tad limited this instant.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

OK, replaced Spark with Acid Splash. Raffe is now at 2 HP thanks to the rest.

Raffe awakens, stiff as a board and aching everywhere.

"Well, that wasn't my best night ever, but at least I am slightly better."

He examines the work that Crucible did over the night.

Appraise: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

Think that will be enough to show that it is really good quality, GM feel free to ad lib me saying exactly how great a job he did.

Grand Lodge

@Raffe: Yes you know exactly how well made it is. Just way whatever you want about it and we'll roll with it. :)

Although it takes some time for you realize, Fariza has also disappeared, leaving behind her white orb upon her bedroll. Crucible was so focused on repairing that last warhammer that he did not notice her dematerializing from sight.

Hours pass from when Greevy said you should be leaving but no one is coming out of the hut. The repaired weapons lay down on the side of the wall gleaming in the sunrise visible from the mouth of the cave. No one is there to stop you from leaving if you wish, but your stomach rumbles from hunger.

Should we see about buying food from him? I bet since our new friend fixed the weapons we could pay actual silver for some food.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

"Hah, given the quality of his work I would say that he owes us breakfast on the house to cover the difference. I may not know where you are from but you are a masterful smith. Even the javelins are easily worth 20 gold each. The masterwork weapons are easily worth enough to cover all of us a few months of staying here at his prices."

Raffe gives Crucible a small bow of respect.

Forgeborn Warpriest (Forgepriest)|HP 22/22|Init+3|Perception+5|AC 20, touch 13, flat-footed 17| Fort+6,Ref+3,Will+8

Crucible shrugs at the compliments, and his eyes seem far more focused now for having a nights rest. His eyes focus on the wounds of the group.

Raffe Crymoff. You are severely damaged, stand here and I will correct your injury.

Crucible chants a spell and his hand glows like a stoked forge as he reaches for Raffes head. Yes, it is a cure light wounds, but some things need special treatment, at least the first time :)

For Raffe assuming he accepts the spell:
Your senses fill with the scent of burned flesh and you feel the rush of pain from what would normally be days of pain from the bloody head wound. All condensed in to a single moment of eye watering agony.

Male Human Wizard / 2 | AC 11 T 11 F 10 | HP 18/18 | F +2 R +1 W +5/+3 | Init +1 | Perc +2

Raffe looks warily at Crucible as he casts his spell.
"You do know I am not made of iron riIIGHTAAaarRAHHHH!"

Raffe falls to his knees as the pain hits him. Xin, who had been sitting next to him on a ledge, squalks in alarm.

Thassilonian:
"Bad not-dwarf thing! Step away from master! How dare you hurt him!"

Xin takes flight and seems ready to try to peck out the blue one's eyes when Raffe stands and calls to him.

Thassilonian:
"Peace, Xin. It was painful but I am better now."

The raven seems mollified and lands protectively on his shoulder. Raffe turns to Crucible and nods in thanks.

"Well that was more painful than I would have imagined, but whatever you did worked. I am ready for whatever trials this place brings."

Raffe walks over to Fariza's roll and picks up her orb.

"I wonder what became of our not so good tempered friend."
