crit confirm: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Urashu balances the crossbow carefully, knowing he only has a few shots left before he becomes viable again l. He breathes deeply a fires, scoring a hit against the devil. The bolt penetrates deeply, well beyond what any of his other attacks have done.

Finally the devil falls, a single gemstone dropping from its corpse. The Hellknights cheer and stomp as a signifer comes over to heal you and escort you to sit with the rest of the new Hellknights. The Vicarius nods at you and calls the next armiger.

Well that was the longest fight ever. Gratz! Level up and take a breather.

So, Shadowtail, you do know that you don't lose the charge if you miss with a touch attack, right? You still should have had your shocking grasp charge in your hand.

I did not know that, I thought it was wasted if the melee attack missed. That probably would have made things easier. I see what you're referring to now though.

The gemstone drops once as then disappears in the air. Urashu comes back into view squatting over the devil, his right hand closed. He could already tell the gemstone held little value, but he was going to keep it anyway as a reminder of his accomplishment.

Urashu joins the others in the victors area, quietly watching the remaining fights after his. After a few minutes he leans down to Vespartius, "I was really impressed with your fight. I don't think I have magic strong enough to put two devils under. Is your specialty in enchantment?"

Tybalt shrugs.

Gerontius Retcon Round 2-13:

GM you are correct. Telekinetic Volley does use a Standard Action to continue to fire. My apologies. I was traveling with my family and we were headed to a cabin without WiFi and no cellular service. I tried to get my monster post in before we left and but it was only 90% complete at best. To my surprise the cabin did have cellular service and in my haste to impress I posted my only partially completed post. In the advent of time/posting efficiency can we say that Gerontius flew around taunting as he let his seven bolts fly, then cast his buffs in the subsquent rounds? All of the buffs are at the least a 5 minute duration so I am not worried about running out of time on my buffs.

On another topic, I could easily have flown around firing with my crossbow, or trying to light the devil up with Magic Missiles, but I wanted to try the shiny abilities of the Transmuter build, but I really want to pass the test to be eligible for this game - hence my indecision of winning easily, but making sure to fully buff to give myself the best possible opportunity to actually kill the devil and pass the test. So that is why he is wasting so much time flying around, softening the devil up, before he goes all Transmuter on the devil.

Assuming the GM allows a minor retcon, Rounds 2-8 are Telekinetic Volleys

  • Round 2: 29 to hit, 4 damage
  • Round 3: 21 to hit, 9 damage
  • Round 4: 20 to hit, 5 damage
  • Round 5: 23 to hit, 9 damage
  • Round 6: 22 to hit, 1 damage
  • Round 7: 13 to hit

Round 8
Silver Bolt, Caster level, Int Bonus, Point Blank Shot: 1d20 + 7 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 3 + 1 = 27
Bolt Damage: 1d10 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 - 1 = 6

Round 9-13 Buffs

  • Round 9: Protection from Evil
  • Round 10: Shield
  • Round 11 Bull's Strength
  • Round 12 Longarm
  • Round 13 Enlarge Person

Let me know if this is ok, and then I will post my Round 14 action and we can get this on for real.

Vespartius turns and responds to Urashu, "No, I happen to specialize in conjuration. In fact, I have an irritatingly stubborn called lemure waiting in my room at this very moment. I merely used that sleep technique because my research led me to believe it it would be the most reliable means of passing the test. I must say, however, that I myself am quite amazed that I managed to survive after that devil summoned a second."

"I was also quite impressed with your ability to succeed despite unexpected difficulties. I don't think I've ever seen as fascinating a combat style as your fusion of firearms and magic."

"We are past that now. From now on we will be defined by our actions. Not our birthplaces or our desires or the rightness of our hearts, but by results."

To Urashu he said. "Your contest was fascinating. I enjoyed watching you improvise."

Tybalt perks up when Vespartius speaks. "A lemure? Interesting. I'm fascinated by negotiations with outsides. I hope to be able to participate in them in the future. I can't summon outsiders but I can be very convincing."

M Elf Wizard (Spellslinger) 5

Urashu grunts as Tybalt and Vespartius mention his fight. "Fascinating describes it well, though I do wish I had been able to get more use out of my pistol. The devil was not a good match for most of my magic but I certainly think you'll see a much better use of the style soon. "

He pauses. "So what do you think comes next? I spent most of my time researching to this point and the Order of the Gate. I didn't look into their armiger training or tasks yet. "

Tybalt considers the question.

"I don't know either."

His eyes scan the assembled Hellknights as he speaks.

"We are now tools of the Order of the Gate. I don't know if there is any real procedure, the order has a broad mandate and every situation is unique. I assume we will be evaluated for our usefulness and deployed accordingly. Best to remain flexible I suppose. And wary."

To Tybalt, Vespartius responds, "I haven't actually mastered binding magic yet, I was merely using a scroll for practice. If we are assigned together, your talents could certainly be useful in coercing the devils I call. They can be quite reluctant to serve, despite the fact that our Order is essentially aligned with their interests in many respects."

After thinking briefly, he continues to Urashu, "During my preparation for the test, I attempted to discover what sort of missions we would be performingif we passed, but I was completely unable to make any headway on the subject. It seems our order is understandably secretive about its operations."

Tyalt nods. "The Order would not be what it is if it's designs were easy to uncover."

"I think one interest we share with devils is in being the master rather than the servant."

Tybalt smiles.

"Conflict is inevitable. That's why I believe we need to be aggressive with them. Bring them here before other fools can unleash them on us. Cajole, coerce, and bind. The Order should suffer no others to do so. It is good that you are trying to master the art of calling them, I envy that ability."

Kallant clears his throat in reply to Tybalt, "I don't believe conflict is inevitable with devils. I've served along side them in the Worldwound. We fight them here and now to test whether we are ready and strong enough to become hellknights."

Kallant appears as a veteran human crusader in his late twenties. His blonde hair is trimmed soldier short. Beneath a dark crimson cloak, he wears full plate armor which is covered in his own dried blood from his waist and a multi-pocketed leather belt with a sheathed dagger to his knees. Under his cloak, he shoulders a full backpack, and past the cloak, he sports two greatswords, a composite longbow, and four bundled quivers.

To Vespartius, Kallant asks, "that's an interesting perspective. Besides demon-hunting, what interests of our order are essentially aligned with devils?"

To Urashu, the crusader asks, "wait, you've never served as an armiger of the order? How did you come to take the test?"

To Jathal, Kallant nods and replies, "the order accepts all kinds, as long as they accept the rule and obey their superiors."

Round 14"No devil, it is time for you to see the true me. What I really am. The beast inside of me."

Slowly Gerontius' form started to morph. His lightly tanned skin took on an ashen hue. His delicate hands, so used to manipulating the components and creating the elaborate hand gestures required for spell casting, began to merge into three misshapen claws. Out of his ribs poked grey lumpen stumps. They twisted and turned until they reached arm length where the formless mass on the end stretched into similar appendages.

Smiling triumphantly, Gerontius closed his eyes. From the top of his head sprouted a twisted, conical horn that terminated in three sharp barbs.

"Come devil, let us see who is the strongest." Gerontius floated lazily towards the devil, stopping just out of range of its fierce weapon.

Battered and beaten, Gerontius lowers his head and drives his horn right through the Devil's eye and out the back of its head.

Devil -4/57 Assuming Total Defense, Adjusting for DR

The devil downed, Gerontius returns to the sand of the pit floor and turns to the assembled Hellknights, and offers a low bow with his hands spread eloquently to the side.

The Hellknights smirk as Gerontius bludgeons the pair of devils into the ground. Upon his victory they cheer and pound their breastplates as he bows to them, before being escorted to the visitors area. The Vicarius nods to him and calls the next armiger.

Contratz! Level up and join the rest of the victors.

"I understand why some of the Order's methods could make you uncomfortable. I don't know that we can promise they are infallible, just better than the alternatives, which are chaos and vulnerability. If you feel dubious about the Order's mandate, what drew you here in the first place?"

"perhaps I would be better suited in another order, but this was the one I was drawn to for... A decent few reasons. Maybe I'll talk more about this later. Not now."

Finished with this grueling test, grueling for some that is, Gerontius curls his right hand into a fist, bangs the middle of his chest. One day soon this will be where an infernal eye staring from a swirling portal will reside upon my uniform.

He held high in swelling pride, he leaves the soiled sand of the Pit, and makes his way to sit with the victors as the others continue to deal with their devils. He turns to the closest victor. "Though I am not surprised that I passed the test so easily, are you not impressed that so many have passed the test today? I wonder if the Vicarius shall assign us to a unit based upon our skills or some other such criteria. I for one look forward to serving with like minded individuals. It has been so weary interacting with the general populace. So disorganized, so base." he lets his thoughts trail off as he awaits a response, enjoying the fights below him.

Urashu nods at Gerontius' question. "Yes, impressed at both the amount of victors and the uniqueness of each armiger. I thought my style of magic was rare, but I've never seen some of the arcane abilities displayed today, even from the academy instructors."

"An impressive victory Gerontius. Another show of overwhelming force." Tybalt nods. "My own tricks seem quite paltry, I'm sure."

"I sympathize with your viewpoint about the general populace." Tybalt muses.

"They are weak, foolish, ignorant." Here Tybalt smiles again, without any show of mirth or joy. "However they are ultimately our responsibility. To indulge in a tired metaphor. They are the herd, clumped together mewling in fear. We are the shepherds trying to prevent their foolishness from destroying them and us.

And where necessary we are also the wolves, when weakness cannot be tolerated. To that end it is our business to be among them. To listen to their bleating, underneath is always the sound of corruption and chaos."

"Both of you sound like such clichés. You do realise neither of you would be standing here today without those 'base creatures', don't you? They are the ones that make sure we can eat." Thurio seemed rather annoyed by his fellows.

"Besides, it's not like they are a threat. That comes from those with more than average potential, like ourselves. Those who purposefully try to destabilize society. Most people will simply move along as long as they are given a measure of respect."

Tybalt laughs, seeming in genuine appreciation.

"Haha. You are right Cuan. We do sound rather ridiculous with our posturing. Perhaps our air of superiority is insufferable." Tybalt shrugs.

"But I speak, in part, as one of them. I am a commoner and when I was younger I was not remarkable in any respect... but I saw some of the ways things can go awry. Our ultimate responsibility is for the people who ensure we can eat. But I disagree that they are not a threat. In your own way I think you sell people short. Unrest lurks in the heart of the most feckless rube, and most people are not so foolish as that. The people that would destabilize society are nothing without them. That's why the rumblings and desires of the most common folk are not to be ignored, but carefully observed."
