Ryzel Cain |
Ah, it happens. I also didn't peek at the 'Pit' stuff before submitting my character, so having built a bard to be 'support' and then realizing you're in a one-on-one fight is a 'woops' moment, haha. I'll see if inspiration hits me for another submission. Thanks though, this was interesting.
SOLDIER-1st |
Elijah - Got it down to 18 hp. So given your average damage another two shots. You can recycle the name, but gotta change the build/backstory, yes.
Ryzel - Yeah. Unfortunately due to the requirements of being a Hellknight, support classes/builds are pretty much a no-go. But the campaign is built around that, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue once play starts.

trux wrote:Maeve Dawnbringer wrote:Hp reduced by bleed to 13.
Knowing that she is unlikely to succeed, Maeve let's loose another spell, casting a summon spell, defensively.
...
sighIt's hard out here for a caster.
Hang in there. It is, I know. I ran through this with over 20 different builds though, so it's definitely possible to win with a variety of different specs.
And believe me when I say that you will be very VERY pleased if you get through with a full caster, particularly if you're a wiz/sorc ;)
It's those dice, those damn dirty dice. I know I drew more AOOs than necessary, but it's a lot more fun than casting "Magic Circle Against Evil" On the Demon, and then pummeling it with arrows. That seemed like a really boring and un-dramatic fight. SO Sildred has gone: Blow Buffs, Heal Yerself, Kill the Thing.
Sildred |
From each of you men
we forge diamonds
Sildred will 5ft Step out of range.
Trux will Withdraw up into the air high and behind the devil.
Then the Armiger raises his bow overhead as glowing energy emanates from his holy symbol. Cure Serious Wounds
CL Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
healing: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (8, 6, 6) + 5 = 25
holy hell that was lucky!
Do I heal 25 or only 23 because of Infernal Wounds?
Maeve Dawnbringer |
@trux yeah, caster has it hard when they cant prebuff, not like the fighter has to wait to put his armor on. there was a mis-communication that resulted in my assumption that I would have to deal with a strong dispel in the pit itself, so I started the battle as a melee caster without spells.
It honestly doesn't matter at this point. Even if I hit for max damage every time, the bleed will kill me before I do even half damage to the devil, and the devil hasn't rolled low enough to miss an attack yet.
good luck to the rest of you.
Azin Orlind |
Giles, red ringed in black, as he flickers in and out of the shadows, draws down his greatsword at the doomed devil.
Azin, the master, stands behind, a equally fiendish gleam staring at the failing foe. Pointing at the infernal one, the master points. "I said finish it!" Azin commanded with the tone of authority that marked him a summoner.
Giles will take a 5 foot step to flank as needed.
Greatsword NO Power attack: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 2 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 9 - 5 ⇒ (5, 5) + 9 - 5 = 14
The mighty sword connects with masterful precision.
That should do it I think! Close one.
Mwiba Kichaka |
Mwiba stands in the pit, facing the devil. Its eyes glistened with hatred, yet glee. The beast lusted for blood. The sight was frightening, but the stout Oread was not phased. Nothing compared to seeing his mother desecrated and destroyed. He harnessed that anger into patience, and killing efficiently. The devil twitched to move, but Thorn was quicker. He raised his battleaxe and charged at his foe without even shouting a battlecry.
Charge Attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 181d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Phew! Good thing I went first, just barely hit it flat-footed.
Sildred |
lunch break!
You will die
attack1: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 - 2 = 15
His first shot is not intuitive, it lacks grace as his excitement takes over.
attack2: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 2 = 27
But the second is true, natural, vicious.
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 4 (x3=12)
The first arrow is a signal, and Trux dives from on hight to swooping charge the devil again.
Melee Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 23
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 x2 = 2 (Devil gets staggered again for 1 round)
this is turning into quite the day. I'm sure I'll actually need those 20s later :(
SOLDIER-1st |
"I said finish it!"
The summoners voice rings out, his commanding tone causing a slight jolt to shiver through the other combatants.
A greatsword blurs through the air, slicing through a fiendish neck. The devil falls, and the flickering eidolon sheathes its blade, waiting on its next orders.
The assembled Hellknights voice their approval, cheering on a new brother. A cleric runs out, healing the pair before leading them over to sit with the other victors.
Congrats on your victory! Level up and enjoy the show
Cassius Thwaite |
The pale-skinned, dark-haired Chelish man with the meticulously groomed goatee looked over the pit with narrowed eyes, planning his attack.
Important question, and sorry if it was stated at some point in thread and I missed it: how deep is the Pit? What sort of vertical space do we have to work with before you're considered to be 'exiting' the pit and therefore forfeiting?
He is dressed in stylish Chelish dress, black and red, very classy... somewhat undercut by the presence of a violently-colored parrot on his shoulder.
When Cassius's name is called, the parrot spreads its wings and shrieks in harsh Infernal, "That's us! That's us, that's us, here we come, awwk!"
"...Decibel, shut up," the man hisses under his breath, unhooking a potion from his belt as he steps forward to the arena.
SOLDIER-1st |
The devil looks at the garishly colored parrot on the otherwise austere and refined wizard and snorts in amusement, eyes glinting with malicious mirth. The gong rings.
Devil init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Cassius init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Charge attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Unfortunately, the parrot is seemingly an ideal distraction, and the devil trips in an unnoticed mudslick, born of previously spilt blood.
I actually laughed. Wow. Devil is prone. Enjoy XD
Sildred |
You will be forgotten
"Good Trux, Go. Sildred's coarse and unusued voice sends Trux back upwards into the reaches of the pit. The Armiger retreats another five feet back. Five more feet the Devil must fight for.
Sildred knocks two more silvered arrows in quick succession.
fire 1: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 4
Feathers and wood sprout from the demon.
fire 2: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 - 2 = 18
damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 8
The second arrow flies and looks like it may have stuck..
SOLDIER-1st |
Another arrow pierces the devil, with a second being deflected off a pauldron. The devil roars, more from frustration than pain, and dashes towards you.
Charge attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
But its frustration proves its undoing, advancing too quickly for the control required to also wield its weapon. The blow swings far too high.
Cassius Thwaite |
I will totally take that trip as the karmic follow-up to your crit on Ryzel. ;)
The parrot screeches in triumph at watching the devil fall. "Awwk! Master, it falls before us already, and you have yet to lift a finger!"
"...I am going to muzzle you, you are embarrassing me before the Hellknights, shut up," Cassius hisses before he lifts the potion bottle to his lips and swigs deeply. He feels the effervescence trickle through his bones, and quickly leaves the ground behind. Time is the wizard's friend: time to make preparations, to outplan and outsmart the enemy... if his theories are correct, he may have just done so.
Standard: drink potion of fly. Move action: fly up at an angle until thirty feet off the ground.
Decibel shrieks insults at the devil before deciding to hide behind his master, before a thrown glaive can explode him into garish feathers.
Oh, forgot a knowledge check, for the sake of establishing IC knowledge: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (20) + 16 = 36
SOLDIER-1st |
The devil reels back, surprised to be on the receiving end of a charge for once, just barely stepping aside in time. It quickly steps back and swings hard with its glaive, striking while it still has the chance.
Full attack #1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Full attack #2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
But oreads are not born of elemental earth for nothing, and your armor is as solid as stone itself, the hellforged steel bouncing off harmlessly.

Never will you be broken
The fantastic quiver at his back cycles, and he pulls just one of two arrows. Arrows he asked to be specially fletched with Trux's own feathers.
Then Armiger Litaine steps backwards again, and fires.
Bane Arrow Uno: 1d20 + 9 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 3 = 15
base damage: 1d8 + 3 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 3 + 1 = 9bane damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
"You seem quiet, Devil." His shot flies wide.
the effect of Prayer ends.
SOLDIER-1st |
Seek thee to smite me with such potency? Would that you had, for at least I might know I face a worthy foe, the growls scornfully into your mind. It steps forward and attacks.
Full attack #1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Full attack #2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Its first strike is weak, pushing you off balance as the backswing cleaves into you, your previously closed wounds bursting open again.
2 bleed damage from Infernal Wound
Mwiba Kichaka 2 |
Ahh well I admire fairness, at least I managed to escape his first round. Also I get deflecting bonus on my next turn. Since he missed by 5 or fewer on both attacks, do I get a plus 2 or just 1? I'll play it like it's +1 for now.
Mwiba was surprised at the explosiveness of the fight already. He was frustrated that he missed his chance to deal an early blow, but knew he had to make the best of his next move if he was to join the ranks of the Hell Knight, rather than the Depths of Hell. He knocks away the devil's ferocious glaive, it's eyes flared and forced the slightest of smiles from the oread. He swings his axe to counter, quickly and precisely.
Attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 311d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Cassius Thwaite |
Cassius exhales as he recognizes his tactic has momentarily confounded the brute. Excellent. Time to get to work. As long as remains in the air, it will be unable to easily attack him-- though he is aware that devils have the ability to teleport, so he cannot completely ignore its ability to reach him. Still, it should spare him the worst of the assault. He keeps flying at a lazy pace, circling the devil (well above it) rather than give it a nice, stationary target. He casts his next preparation.
Swift action: use arcane armor training to reduce spell failure chance to 0%. He will be doing this on every round, since he has nothing else to use swift actions on, so I won't bother typing it but you can assume it happens.[/ooc[
[ooc]Standard: Casting Mirror Image
Mirror Images: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Four duplicates of Cassius appear in midair around him.
"HA! NOW WE OUTNUMBER YOU!" shrieks the parrot. Cassius sighs.
SOLDIER-1st |
Success on low
Summoning: 1d100 ⇒ 63
But the sudden screech from the parrot high above jars its concentration, and the spell fizzles out. It curses in frustration.
From now on this entire fight is going to revolve around the parrot XP

It's a mundane armor modification. I found it on d20pfsrd, but here's the best proof i could find on Paizo: Mundane Armor Modifications
Apparently it was released with Pathfinder Chronicles: Faction Guide.Cassius Thwaite |
Cassius permits himself a brief smile when he notices the devil's failed attempt at a casting of his own. Decibel is much less restrained in his excitement.
"WHAT DID YOU THINK YOUR FRIEND WAS GOING TO DOOOO, AWWK? THROW YOU AT MY MASTER? YOU'RE TOO FAT! AWWK!"
Sigh. "Don't taunt a barbazu, Decibel. It's unwise."
"BUT I USED TO DO IT ALL THE TIME WHEN I WAS BIGGER!"
"...what? What the Hell are you talking about-- this is not the time."
Putting his familiar's babble out of his head, Cassius begins to cast a summoning incantation. When fighting a devil.... bring an angel, or something close to it, anyway.
Summon monster is a full-round casting, so I assume I'm going to have to make a fly check to hover.
Fly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
....not that I'm complaining, but a 20 on the kn and a 20 on the fly? Oh if only these were attacks

The devil grunts as your ax slams into it, crunching through armor and digging into its flesh. The devil quickly slides back, maintaining its reach, and counters.
Full attack #1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Full attack #2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
A quick raise of your shield and turn of your shoulder deflect the blows though, the metal harmlessly screeching off.
SOLDIER-1st |
The devil shrieks in pain as the bane pierces it, the wound burning agonizingly. It grimaces and once again steps to attack you, hatred written in its eyes.
Full attack #1: 1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 11 - 4 = 10
Full attack #2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 6 - 4 = 13
But your curse keeps the devils prowess subdued, the attacks clumsy and weak.
SOLDIER-1st |
The gathered Hellknights look on in expectation. Paladins were far and few between in the Hellknights, and even moreso in the Order of the Gate. The strain of holding to two such demanding and often conflicting codes was often far greater than any mortal was capable of, leaving them burnt out and wrecked husks of men. The end fate of this one was a topic of much discussion among the higher ranks.
This meant nothing to the man walking down into the Pit. Fear had long since been burned from his mind. The myriad terrors of life, both great and small, no longer had a hold on him. He was the living embodiment of his code. Incorruptible and implacable.
The warrior of holy vengeance and the soldier forged in Hell waited, each disciplined beyond mortal measure.
The gong resounds.
Devil init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Ivari init: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Charge attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

The devil reacts quickly, rushing to move in before you can bring your bow to bear, blade stabbing into your side.

Sildred drops back and touches his bow to his holy symbol over his chest in a ceremonial pose. He is casting magic weapon on his darkwood bow.

He jumps back, and fires as Trux dives back downwards.

arrow 2: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 2 = 15
swooping charge: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
it seems like the cleric can't touch his opponent!
Cassius Thwaite |
A ball of light winks into appearance a few feet from Cassius. He speaks quick words in Infernal instructing it to attack.
Two beams of light stab towards the devil.
Light Ray 1, ranged touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Light Ray 2, ranged touch: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage on two hits, bypasses DR: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
Any satisfaction Cassius might have felt at the accurate strikes from the archon turns into a disgruntled sigh at the minimal damage. He mutters the words of a defensive spell on himself. For once the parrot is quiet.
Move: fly around~
Standard: cast Shield on self

Their curiosity is of no matter...
The gong sounds and Ivari tenses ready to begin his assault but the devil is fast and closes in a flash.
It is to be this way then. So be it.
Grunting as the attack threatens flesh and skims steel Ivari moves as he has hundreds of times before, confident in his art and skill of combat. Taking a soft diagonal step back Icvari brings up his bow whispering to himself as he does so, To the pit with you demon, you will know my fury... Mwiba Kichaka |
Sorry this is just my first post of the day, I'll be a little slower to post these next five days, but I can keep it pretty consistent.
Mwiba was again greatful for the fortitude of his armor, and he again intended on making his fortune count for something. As he catches the devil's glaive on his shield, as well as the backhanded attempt at a second attack, Mwiba sees that the devil's guard is slightly more open thanks to the deflection. He nimbly twists to the side, taking a 5 ft step, and slashes downward at the devil.
Melee Attack: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 12 + 1 = 231d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Above, Cassius decides his defenses are in order, and switches to the offensive. Bolts of raw magical energy erupt from his hand and streak towards the devil.
Spell Penetration vs DC 16: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 = 13

Three wasted magic missiles later... Cassius huffs at the slow whittling away of the devil's defenses.
"Awwk-- boss, maybe you should try a different spell?"
"Yes, thank you so much for your insight."
"Here to help!"
"That was sarcasm, you feathered nit--"
Round 8
Lantern Archon Attack 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

"...boss, are you sure you know what you're doing?"
"Decibel.... if you are not silent I will hurl you down to that devil."
The parrot seems to doubt the sincerity of this threat, but keeps his beak shut for another few moments, anyway.
Round 9
Lantern Archon Attack 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Lantern Archon Attack 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Fly check to hover as he begins a full-round summons, DC 10: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
....wow. Two natural 1s on the lantern archon, and I flub my fly check. Fabulous. I'll stop there to let GM adjudication for the nat 1s kick in, and because I... don't actually know what happens when you flub a fly check and were starting a summoning, etc. I mean, I presume you fall, but I don't know whether you are committed to the summons at that point, or whether the fly check takes place before you start the summoning, or what. Note: Cassius has boots of the cat and was 30 feet up as a default, so the most damage he will take from the fall is 3 points. The question is whether I could abort the summoning once I begin to fall, save the spell, and therefore not have to try and make a concentration check to keep it going.
I suppose if I am now landed but continuing the summons, I'd need to make a concentration check. If I am able to change my decided action once I realize I am falling, then I would, of course, use my turn to fly back up to 'safe height' again if feasible.
Damage after Round 9: 0 + 26 in previous round = 26. Lantern Archon, 6/7
Current buffs: Shield, Mirror Image (4 images), AC 20
Maeve Dawnbringer |
Using the spell fly, you have good maneuverability, which is a +4 to any skill checks. Since your roll was only a +3 I assume you didn't apply this to the roll, which would give you an 11. Though the DC to hover is 15, not 10. 10 is to move less than half speed. You should be able to maintain half speed and circle around the arena.
