The devil smirks, batting away your feeble attack and responding with it's own series of slashes.

Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Full attack #2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
The blade easily slips past your defenses, gouging another wound across your abdomen.
Maeve Dawnbringer |
Problem with casting is that the dispel effect is d20+13 vs my DC of 16. The ward needs to roll a 4 to beat me. That's an 85% chance to have the spell fail. That would be like fighting a devil with an AC of 26 and your attack bonus is +8. Each time I try to cast, the spell is wasted, so I get one shot at mirror image, and the devil will be able to hit me if the spell fails, then I get one shot at glitterdust, and the devil hits me if I fail the spell, then... I switched to melee because even though I have silver arrows, the devil can charge every round, assuming I get away from it without an AoO. Believe me, I picked the spell list with devils in mind.
While going straight wizard would have given me 3rd level spells, and a few more spells, it would not have changed my chance of failure against the wards. Which I didn't know about at the time.
Maeve Dawnbringer |
dispel: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Whatever spell she was trying to cast, fails.
dispel: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Whatever spell she was trying to cast, fails.
dispel: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Assuming she is still alive at this point, and has successfully cast defensively/moved out of AoO, let's say she is down to miserable pity, having tried mirror image and glitterdust.
Unfortunately, her HP of 44 was reduced by 12, 11, and 4 bleed before these three rounds. She'll take another 6 bleed before she casts miserable pity, leaving her with 11 HP and two rounds of attacks from the devil.
If bleed stacks with each hit, the second hit adds another 2 bleed which means she'll take 12 bleed in these three rounds, leaving her with 5 HP and two attacks from the devil.

Nonono. Ok. I'm sorry for not making this clear, but basically the wards aren't going to affect you while you're in the Pit. The walls are thick. The Pit is where a lot of the bigger summoning and binding things go on, so it's protected pretty heavily to make sure nothing summoned can get out. But while you're inside you won't get dispelled. Again, sorry for not making that clear.
Ryzel Cain |
A close arena, and the runes to dispel magic... her skills work better when she can give orders to others-- she's a leader, not a brute who goes toe-to-toe with outsiders! Still, it would be the height of dishonor to admit to any misgivings she has.
She banishes fear from her mind and focuses on studying the foe at hand.
Kn Planes: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Just verifying how the Symbols of Dispelling work... if I cast, say, Invisibility, do I get a round of invisibility out of it before the potential dispel, or is it automatically dispelled? eta ah, you may have just addressed that. But if you want to clarify again for the slow people like me, I'm down with that.
When she is called forward, Ryzel be begins to sing, in a powerful voice, Infernal syllables ringing off the walls of the arena.
"Hell holds no terrors for the sworn servant
"Of the First Prince! Asmodeus, grant your loyal daughter
"Dominion over the powers that walk!"
Starting Bardic Performance, +2/+2

The devil advances, always pressing the attack, forcing you to fully concentrate on staying alive. Your blood runs down the metal of your armor, dripping down to congeal with the dust of the ground.
Ryzel Cain |
Seeing that her words have given the devil a moment's hesitation, Ryzel quickly follows them with a pinch of mica from her belt pouch and words that crackle off her tongue, while sketching gestures with her fingers. A burst of golden light erupts around the devil's head.
Once her spell is complete, she draws the small, mithral dagger. Ryzel's lips are pursed in a thin line of displeasure, that this is the only weapon she has that might suffice, but she tries not to show any fear. She will do her family's lineage proud, even if she does not succeed here.

Maeve Dawnbringer |
let's get this travesty over so i can roll up a new character, now knowing the rules of the engagement.
To make the last attack, the devil had stepped back, Maeve takes a step back herself, removing her from the immediate threat of the glaive and casts mirror image.
Her HP is currently 15.

Tragen Blackmourne |
- Angelkin Purifier 5
Tragen watches the various combats with interest as he prepares himself to be called for his own battle. Defeating such creatures was what he had been trained for, even if he had fallen from the Church's grace. Joining the Hellknights, an organization of strict laws and enforcement would prevent what had happened, or at least have allowed for a more public presentation of justice. We shall see if I am worthy.

The hawk drops from the sky like a meteor, raking across the devils face. The devil, while not particularly hurt, is stunned, batting the bird away before returning its attention to you. It advances, so close you can smell its sulfur flavored breath.

Fingers tight on her dagger, buckler on her other arm, she strides forward with a confidence she may not truly feel. Fake it til you make, as they say on the stage.

Even in the midst of its pain though, its training kicks in. A simple feint, followed by a powerful blow, it puts all of its force behind the swing, the blade sinking through armor and skin and muscle.
Sectty |
Although Sectty was enjoying the open trade of greatsword swings, he was at the limit of his Stamina, so he used the devil's move against him! Its last hit put it out of balance, and Sectty uses the mistake to get a final hit at the monster, straight at the chest!

2 bleed damage from Infernal Wound
SOLDIER-1st |
The warrior is still grinning, despite his rent armor and the blood that is quite literally streaming out of him to puddle at his feet. The equally wounded devil crashes into him, blade seeking, and finding, flesh. But that is all the opening the man needs, and he thrusts, over four feet of steel piercing through armor and hide and bone, punching out of the devils back. There is no shriek or roar of pain this time. A simple choked gasp and it sags, stolen sword thudding against packed dirt. Three Hellknights sprint towards the man, the healing glow surrounding them bright enough to cast everything into stark relief. The assembled Hellknights look on, tense. While rare, it is not unheard of for both devil and armiger to fall in the Pit.
Suddenly a gauntleted fist bursts up from the crowd of healers, clutching a bloody blade. The Hellknights roar their approval.
The clerics guide the battered warrior over to the victors row as chants of "Sectty!" echo off the ceiling.
Congrats man! That was even more tense than Legains! Level up and take a well deserved rest
Elijah Moore |
Elijah, continues to attack. He could staunch the bleeding, but not taking the opportunity to to damage the enemy is foolish to say the least.

Sectty |
The large man is happy, but not quite. He's disappointed and wished he got a flawless victory, but luck wasn't on his side today. He saw a devil that wasn't more skilled than the previous one get simply lucky, but Sectty was skilled enough to be the last one standing. He picked up his swords and the devil's Glaive, if it's still there. Only a token for another limit broken: being unlucky, and surviving to tell the tale.
Thanks, but I really wasn't expecting such a close call... I mean, in a pure fight as this probably would have made it last just a few rounds, not 7! Thanks for the opportunity!
He raised his weapon on the air. "Good luck brothers!"
Ryzel Cain |
Second question: I assume the devil is taking a 5-foot step back in order to actually attack me with its glaive?
"Hnnhh!" Ryzel grunts, despite her determination to keep her composure. Pain.... pain is... nothing, in the service of Asmodeus. She continues to shout the words of her loyalty to the Dark Prince, even as blood runs from the deep bite of the glaive.
She staggers back a step, and her buckler slips down her arm as she raises her hand to cast the spell again. Her chances of survival depend entirely on her ability to keep the beast unable to clearly attack her.
Free: maintain performance, blah blah
Free: 5-foot step back, out of glaive reach, I hope

The blade sinks cleanly into your chest, screeching past your armor and into your heart. You gurgle once, a small spray of blood issuing from your mouth, then collapse, your weight pulling you off the blade and onto the ground. Hang in there.
It is, I know. I ran through this with over 20 different builds though, so it's definitely possible to win with a variety of different specs.
