She looks confused, "Wait, she's schlepping some Russian, and somehow that's keeping everyone from getting shot dead?" She blows out a breath, "Sure hope she's good at it."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The captain smirks, something going through his mind quickly, but it passes. "Whatever works right? Look, all I know is my crew got orders to keep these people safe as favor for a friend. That Dr. Sudal has some big time friends, if you know what I mean. Her relationship with Vasily is.. strenuous at best. Thing is, lately they been on the outs, but he still makes sure she can operate here." He stops and thinks something through before continuing. "I don't think she's just schlepping him, as you put it."

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

I think you mean schtuping...:)

I knew that XD

Cynthia furrows her brow in thought. then sighs. "Politics..."
She ponders the situation for a moment, then gives an uneasy look to the captain, "Thank you..." She'll shuffle off, discouraged.

Natalie will return to the team, "I am not certain what I should lead with if I talk to the Doctor herself...If you've got any ideas, say so, otherwise I think its best to work the other half of this angle."

Male Irish American Soldier 2/ Wheelman 2 38/38 V 16 W

Well Smith and I already had our run at the doctor. I mean you're a dame so you might be able to work a different angle. Who knows she might get gossipy with you.

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith says, "I agree with Mack, we still got to pack the vehicle. Hopefully, you got that magic."

Nat shrugs, "Well, I can try, but we've been seen together, but I can give it a go. We're leaving anyway."

Cynthia will locate Dr Sudal over the next twenty minutes hopefully and introduce herself.

"Doctor? Cynthia Betterman." She holds out her hand wearily, "my apologies for taking so long to meet you, but this entire situation got out of hand really fast." She looks rather haggard as she explains, "I'm a Red Cross liason, assistant to the director of operations in charge of special projects. Long story short, I was looking for a way to help lend aid to the region without raising too many eyebrows, and then my contact just ended up lost and probably dead in the brush."

She takes a seat somewhere if possible, exhausted, "I've just lost my promotion on this stupid little gamble...so yeah I know you weren't notified, we were just..." She pauses, not wanting to go on further.

Bluff!1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

Savage Rifts RotRwT

After a moment, the doctor comes to her senses. She seems to be distracted by something as you enter her very disorganized tent. She mindlessly shakes your hand as she half listens to what you're saying. "Uh-huh...okay.." When you finish, she finally settles down herself and hands you a cup of coffee. "Relax. We're all friends here. I'm sorry about your friend. Seems like a lot of people are losing friends around here, so we like to be friendly with everyone. Even someone who is obviously out of her element." She half smiles. "No disrespect Ms. Betterman, but wouldn't this have gone over better if your people simply talked to the directors of the Red Crescent rather than sent you into a warzone to speak with a camp supervisor? We can use the help, sure, but what good is getting a liaison and her contact lost out here?" Dr. Sudal starts or continues, you aren't sure, to write something on a notepad as she awaits your response.

She shrugs timidly, "I uh...needed more real world experience. Before I had a shot at getting promoted." Cynthia manages a meek smile for a moment, "Not that that matters anymore. I didn't think the war'd be so close to you. None of this is in my handbook." The last line was offered with a chagrin, "Does the actual fighting generally get this close to neutral third parties?"

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Dr. Sudal smiles. "Since when is what we truly need to know in a handbook? The fighting can be intense when it occurs, but this area is decidedly under Soviet control at this point. Most of the rebels are more to the south of us. At least, that's what I'm told."

She says a bit concerned, "I've heard people talk in camp. I mean, I don't want to pry, but they're saying that the camp is somehow in the Russian's...pockets. I'm not judging, I just...Is that just how it goes here?
"

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The doctor's smile turns into a questioning frown. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were sounding just like that American reporter we have in camp. Look, I'm able to help people without having to go through too many diplomatic channels and that suits me fine. However I have to get it done, I will. Right now that deal is working and I'm doing everything in my power to keep it that way. Wouldn't you?"

Meanwhile, outside, Louis notices Macomb and Smith packing up the truck. "Headed somewhere?"

Sometimes its better to just cop to it, and see where it goes, Nat figures

Cyn manages a guilty, sheepishly smile, "He said something about it. I thought I'd ask, just in case he really could spin things like he said. But I guess this little nightmare of mine is just not going to go away."

She shifts into a more somber tone,"But yeah, I mean, I get it. Whatever's needed, right? Bribes, blackmail, and family connections." She manages a weak smile, "I think I'd better get out while the gettings good. This place...its not for me."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Dr. Sudal nods. "It certainly isn't for everyone. And hey, for what it's worth, I appreciate your efforts."

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith says, "Yeah, the doc has us going on an errand. I think to see if we are worth a s$~%. Louis you got any sitrep for us about things outside the wire?"

Female Human Advocate 2/ Martial Artist 1 20/20 Vit 11 HP

Eventually Nat will meet up with the rest of the team, but if she sees them in conversation, she'll keep to herself, also steering clear of the journalist.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Louis shakes his head. "Not much more than you probably know. Malfort has us holed up in here. Says that any of us outside camp confines makes us 'free game', if you know what I mean. I think it's a bunch of diplomatic yoohoo, but that's the way it is, no?" He thinks for a moment and continues. "Hey, maybe you can get me out of here, yes? I mean, just for a bit, see some action, what do you say?"

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith says, "well mon amis, if you got an RPG with three rockets, we can definitely use you. Although a red eye would be best."

Smith then turns to Macomb and says,"What do you think?"

He then sees Nat and says, "Cindy, you should meet my friend Louis."

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Louis grins. "Hehe. If only. Maybe one of them rebels out there will loan you one. Or even one of those Sovies. They got so many RPGs out there, the rebels just have to hold their hands out and one falls into it." He smiles as he pats the MAS-49 on his shoulder. "About as likely as getting one of those new FAMAS guns they keep telling us about."

He tips his kepi as Cynthia approaches.

Cynthia holds herself as she warily approaches the group, "Hey guys...what's going on?"

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith says, "Mac and I are going on a mission for the Doc. And with the passing of our Patron, I need to earn money quick to get back to Salisbury and my family. Louis here is coming with. He is a legionnaire and supposedly a crack shot with his bolt action rifle. Cindi, feel free to join us. It may be a bit more safe than staying in this camp."

A shocked look crosses Cynthia's face, "Hey wait. You were supposed to escort us out of here! Mr. Chambers paid you good money for that!"

Natalie plays off of Timothy's remarks a bit. Of course since Chambers was dead, he was no longer on the job...

She looks around the camp incredulously, "Yes I still want to go, but I don't want to go into a firefight or anything."

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith says, "Luckily, I got paid half upfront. No Chambers, No one to sign the checks. We will try our best not to get shot at but in a warzone people get slotted all the time like magic."

Cynthia responds timidly, "I don't think this spot's much better..."

I think we're ready to move on at our GM's behest

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Louis helps you finish packing the truck with your gear. "So... what's the plan? Are we just driving right up?"

Stealthy approach? Drive casual? How close do you want to get to the base? Etc...

Male Irish American Soldier 2/ Wheelman 2 38/38 V 16 W

When driving casual is mentioned Macomb does his best Wookie impression in an attempt to lighten the mood before the tense scene coming up.

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith looks at Macomb and says, "In Rhodie we's gots tha ridgers to hunt things that make said sound." scratching his head that is some retarded sounding lion, hope mac is ok.

Female Human Advocate 2/ Martial Artist 1 20/20 Vit 11 HP

Natalie defers to Timothy for all matters in this situation, as his knowledge greatly outweighs hers.

Just posting to ensure I'm at keys and here

Male Irish American Soldier 2/ Wheelman 2 38/38 V 16 W

Guess ya'll not Star Wars fans. You'd love it Smith you are totally a Han Solo type. Shoot first and from the hip. How about you Louis have you seen La Guerre Des Etoiles? Macomb continues making conversation during the drive.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Louis smiles. "Your American movies do not always make it to France right away. I was deployed to Libya during that time. Missed it. Heard a rumor that they are having another from my brother in Nice, but I haven't even seen the first one."

That and the fly casual scene is in Return of the Jedi which hasn't shown yet until 1983..., so not even Macomb would know that. Unless he has an in with Lucas somehow... The more you know ;-) Would be an interesting add to his backstory though...

You drive the half hour or so to the temporary Soviet base north of the Red Crescent tent city. For the first few minutes, you are mostly alone, seeing maybe a soldier or two along the way, but as you get closer, you can see that there is a gate up ahead before you get to the base proper. It consists of two small gatehouse buildings with an iron bar gate in between. They are connected to the sides of a small canyon with cliff sides about thirty feet high on both sides by rolls of concertina wire. On top of each gatehouse is a machine gun manned by a Soviet soldier and four more soldiers are on the ground by the gate. You can also see a few other soldiers milling about further up the road, but it isn't clear exactly what they are doing.

As you approach, three of the guards by the gate grip their AK-47s as the fourth approaches your vehicle with his hand up and palm out.

"Where are you going? Delivery is not scheduled til next week."

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith has been around Rhodesia for a long time and probably hadn't seen it.

In the truck, "I don't shoot from the hip, I am a soldier and slottin' the dregs of society is my game."

Smith answers the Soviet soldier in stride "We're here to see the base commander on behalf of the Doctor." not giving away his Russian language skills to pick up some scuttlebut.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

The soldier, a junior sergeant by the looks of his Soviet red epaulet with two gold bars, picks up his radio and speaks into it, in Russian.

"Sir, messengers from the Doctor, sir."
...
"Yes sir, they want to to see Captain Orsov, sir. What should I tell them?"
...
"Yes sir."

DC 20 Perception/Notice:

...
"What does she want now? G*&#%+mit! Give the woman a f*cking break and now she wants the world. Orsov is going to get us killed. What do they want?"
...
"*sighing* Send them in, take them to the holding area, check the truck, usual protocols. Disarm them if necessary, just to be on the safe side. No one comes here without knowing the doctor or having a death wish, but we can't be too sure. This is technically a warzone."

Putting away his radio, he signals for the other guards to open the gate. "Drive to front gate, as soon as you are in, guards will direct you to park vehicle. You will be searched for weapons and contraband, as will your vehicle. Then Lieutenant Ursumo will debrief you before seeing the Captain."

He then waves you through and the guards stand aside as you drive through...

Going to let you decide if you want to do anything prior to being searched and debriefed...

Female Human Advocate 2/ Martial Artist 1 20/20 Vit 11 HP

So we need a cover story, and a reason for the bag full of guns, a way to either conceal the guns, or we have to have them ditched before we showed up. And the tough part is that we can't just discuss it openly with Louis in the vehicle...

Notice1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

We are in a warzone and work for the camp's security now

Notice 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Then Smith relays the info he eavesdrop on the ride to park.

Male Irish American Soldier 2/ Wheelman 2 38/38 V 16 W

Razor drives slowly towards the front gate.
Razor has his switchblade hidden on his calf. And his PPK is in its concealed holster.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Need concealment rolls for any concealed weapons. So Sleight of Hand/Stash Item. Not seeing any modifiers that truly apply, so it's a straight skill roll.

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith unties his boot and then stuffs his Gerber Mk2 into the shaft of the boot and then reblouses his pants into the top of his boot 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Female Human Advocate 2/ Martial Artist 1 20/20 Vit 11 HP

Natalie will not have any weapon upon her person. It wouldn't fit Cynthia's cover, and it'd be easier to bluff why the team has such gear than to hide it...at least in Nat's case.

Natalie's nervousness at being here isn't entirely in character as her cover, especially after Timothy relays what he hears. Still social engineering is her thing...

Male Irish American Soldier 2/ Wheelman 2 38/38 V 16 W

A weapon quality called Discreet(sic)(DST) (p301) gives a bonus to concealment. Also a bonus is given relating to the size of the object as determined by the table on page 349.

Razor has already stashed his weapons (Switchblade and PPK in concealed holster) prior to driving.

ConcealSwitchblade: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34 +3 skill +12 DIM size
ConcealPPK: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36 +3 skill +4 Discrete quality +12 DIM size +2 for concealed holster.

Underneath his seat is his sniper rifle which he intends to hand over at the security check point.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

BTS:

Guard Notice/Awareness: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

True enough, but remember there is also a cap on your skills at this level, regardless of bonus, but I did not look at size modifier, so Smith's would be a 20, as would both of Macombs' rolls. Didn't seem to matter either way...

As you are ordered to disembark, the Soviet soldiers check you over quickly, almost seeming bored or not caring, as they bypass the hidden weapons that both Macomb and Smith are carrying. They do however take note of the rifle that Louis is carrying as well as the sniper rifle that is in the truck. When they are satisfied with that, they lead you to a small building with two more guards outside. One of them goes and then returns, opening the door and beckoning you to enter. You are taken to an office with a small desk and a tall Soviet officer standing behind his desk with his hands clasped behind his back. He waves the guards away with a hand.

"So, they say you came here from the camp. I presume you came to hunt sand lions? Your truck contains a lot of firepower for carrying a message from the good doctor. I find it odd she didn't go through the usual channels. Care to explain before I have all of you executed for wasting my time?"

Cynthia looks rather uneasy and out of place with the serviceman and the driver. While she was generally the first one out of the gate with a good lie, it simply wouldn't do to be presumptuous. The man was military, which meant he wanted a military answer most likely, not her sob story. She wrings her hands together nervously as she looks abashed and afraid for her life.

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith looks at the pretentious communist with mild disdain and then says, "Well, let's not be so hasty. You do know there is a war on outside your wire and we don't have a hundreds of men to watch over us to keep us safe. In addition to the Muj, there are the Afghan People's Army as well as the drug cartels and the Arabs running around this country all of whom would shoot you because your boots have rubber soles instead of cardboard. So yes we have some guns but we aren't carrying any heavy weaponry that could destroy one of your fine T-72 tanks or shoot down one of those heavily armored helicopters."

Smith then proffers some brandy from his flask.

"Nasdroviye, tovarish leitenant?" with a smile.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Lieutenant Ursumo eyes Smith incredulously, his finger to his chin as he thinks for a moment. Apparently making a decision, he takes the offered drink and then makes a face. "I don't know what this is, but it is not a drink." He says in Russian, sitting down at his desk and pulling out a bottle of vodka and five glasses, pouring a little in each. "You are right, it is dangerous out there. Yet here you are and there she is. Speaking of the good doctor, what does she want now? Her delivery isn't due until three days from now, or did she not mention that? "

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith laughs and says, "What you don't like Konyak, clear alcohol is for children. Hahaha!" as he throws back a shot.

Smith says, "Well, Tovarish, the Doctor is concerned that the arrangement between your commander and her is.... is well somewhat compromised. She is somewhat concerned that she may have offended the Captain in some way and she would like to make amends."

Notice 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Savage Rifts RotRwT

What are you trying to Notice Smith? Something specific or in general?

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Anything out of the ordinary about the man.

Savage Rifts RotRwT

Smith looks at the Lieutenant's uniform and sees that he must have seen more action than most officers of his rank. The scar across his cheek and his apparent age and the way his uniform is practically impeccable, even here in the desert, all tell Smith this man has more experience than his rank would signify. "Amends? Heh. The Captain has been with that desert fox for some time and he seems to forget he has a wife and kids back in Minsk. Maybe his wife finally reminded him of his place and he can't figure out what to tell the doctor." He shrugs. "Don't worry, everyone here knows and I'm sure everyone there knows." It is about this time the vodka hits Smith. This is no ordinary grain vodka. Ursumo smiles at Smith's face. "Good stuff, da?"

He calls out in Russian, "Take them to see the captain. They're good people."

A couple of soldiers come in to escort you to the captain. As you get up to leave, Lieutenant Ursumo puts a hand on Smith's shoulder and whispers to him. "I don't know what you're actually up to, and frankly, I don't care, but don't make a mess." He puts something in Smith's hand as he shakes it and says out loud, "Good luck friends."

The soldiers take you to a much larger tent. This one is well guarded, with four men in what Smith and Macomb recognize as Spetznaz uniforms, carrying AKSU-74 submachineguns. After the usual greetings, the Captain calls you all into his office. The place looks similar to the doctor's. Organized chaos. There are maps and documents lying all over, the desk in the middle with a man looking to be older than he should be, staring at you over light rimmed glasses. His uniform is a bit disheveled, but otherwise is definitely Soviet. This is Vasily Orsov. "They tell me you have a message from Aruma. One she couldn't send herself, apparently. So, out with it."

Cynthia looks around with worry, as they just went from one dangerous man to a whole room of them. She nervously tries to glean what info she can from the situation, all while maintaining a role that isn't too far from her real position, well into enemy hands and a half-step away from death.

While she couldn't really understand much about the maps and possible military tactics, she may be able to help recognize more about the situation at hand, as well as the reasons the situation has escalated as it has...
Bureacracy/Knowledge: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

The situation is simply alien to her, sadly.

Male Caucasian Scout 3 Snoop 1

Smith looks at the lieutenant and says, "Samogon, tovarish, niye ploche."

As they march underguard, Smith coughs and covers his mouth to see what was given him....

Savage Rifts RotRwT

On the way to the captain's office..

Smith takes a quick glance in his hand and is surprised to see a medal in it, but not just any medal. This is the Rhodesian Independence Decoration Medal. It was awarded to those who served in the 1965 Independence Action.

In the captain's office...

Natalie looks around at all the maps and documents and all of them seem like standard military fair, except there is a pile of paperwork on the captain's desk that it very disorganized, but she can read what it says on top of the pile. EYES ONLY.
