Place holder.

Male Orc Expert 5

This wasn't supposed to be happening.

No really, you aren't supposed to be here.

Thirty six hours ago you were sailing a three month long trip through warp space to the planet Straxa where you would be recirculated to a new regiment.

Your commander, a calm sort attempting to drown his lot under a veritable ocean of whatever rotgut gets fermented by the strange folk that pass for imperial navy here, actually missed the urgent communication by an hour. The orders were almost a month old by the time they reached the ship.

Forty eight hours ago your squads superior officer ordered you and several other squads to form up and perform some half hearted drills as the Commissar attached started to ask pointed questions about the guardsmen's discipline and morale.

You really didn't care for all of that honestly. Mostly you were just bloody bored. Hell the whole regiment had to be. Iron Angela was more machine than human by this point without much lower half to speak for, but her status as the only female on the ship guaranteed she'd get at least one half blind idiot make a pass on her in the mess hall.

At least there were the rat hunts.

Well the shipmen called them rats. They were more like six foot lizards that fed on the paranoids mammal creatures that might have been dogs at some point given their size.

But they were something to do. Something to keep your aim up. The blood hot.

But then the orders came down.

The planet was called Rakuen. A paradise world.

You were briefed by the squads lieutenant. Rakuen is a world where no major fauna presence has been found. The world is made up of complex fungal and algae structures, lichen mostly, and the only things that eat those lichen are micro organisms and other parasitic fungi. None of it adapted well enough to use human proteins for nutrition so utterly completely safe and livable. Various fungi have been harvested for mostly recreational use and one of the dominant fungal trees (the lieutenant had a hint of a smile as he read this last part) works as a natural birth control.

So really, up until now the planet has basically been a refuge for planetary nobles, wealthy spacers, and rogue traders to get high and f@*~ everything to their hearts content.

Until now.

Approximately two and a half months ago the planets meager PDF force simply vanished. All of it. The reports suggest no struggle, no signs of any enemy encounters. Nothing.

One of the sector's Inquisitors set out to solve the mystery of the missing PDF. In the meantime he requested that a nearby regiment be sent to the planet to fortify it against any outside force if there was any and stand by to back him up if need be.

And lo and behold a simple little bit of time saving paper work millions of light years away sees you here. Packing your things. Checking your gear. And getting ready to pack into a devourer and drop planet side.

Right so let's first get some introductory posts to establish characters and get a role call. Next post from me will see you planetside.

"Well, grok me, but this sounds to be a laugh a minute..."

Cormaeg shook his head and spat in disgust.
The elderly field medic was known to have precisely one single amount of bedside manner, that is, if you count zero as a number.
Grizzled and wiry, he had the skin of an old leather boot, at least where it could be seen through the shock of white beard and wild hair.

"I wouldn't be surprised if the only medicine I get to practice down there is handing out pox shots and salt tablets.
Join the guard they said, "We need men with your training in medicine" they said.
A pox ridden son of a sow could do THAT much."

Realizing that he might be spilling his vitriol a little TOO freely, the medic turns to the sergeant of the unit with a somewhat sheepish smile.
"Not that I mind of course sarge, always ready to do my duty sarge."

Trying to keep his hands busy so he doesn't run his mouth like that again, Cormaeg focuses on field stripping his las gun, polishing the wood stock with extra care.

Maybe we can earn a medal for "successful guard duty" or something...

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Hathin lets the Medic run his mouth, the lights hadn't gone red and whether the man wanted to run his mouth, drink a skinful or shag a partially moving corpse... not much of his concern till bullets were flying. He turned and looked around for whether there was a Commissar nearby and was thankful to not see one before shrugging and replying to the man who was now somehow his medic... Bloody hell, don't know any of these bastards... "That's all it is we'll all still have enough limbs and sense to enjoy ourselves there... ain't been to anywhere near fancy as this place is supposed to be... so unless you're in a hurry to get back t'wards Straxa I say lets get frosty... just in case..."

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

"Yeah...fancy...
Well, it could be a lot worse I suppose."
There was a tone of acceptance in Cormaegs voice, grudging clearly, but acceptance nonetheless.

"I don't suppose we've been given any specific orders sarge? Just deploy and look suitably martial."

Satisfied with his tweaking of his M36, Cormaeg gives a grunt and begins to slowly and lovingly polish the fine finish of the wooden stock.

"At least we're properly armed and armoured, I overheard a squad from one of the other regiments saying they have only half the normal charge packs, and no helmets."

WS 40 | BS 47 | ST 36 | TN 32 | AG 38 | PER 36 | INT 25 | WILL 35 | FELL 30 Wounds 15/15 | Fate Points 3/3 | current lasclip 59/60 | current meltaclip 4/5

"Good thing, I'm in this regiment then. Wouldn't want to run out of packs in the middle of an engagement."

Zaltys was sitting on the other side, counting his charge packs and making certain his M36 and meltagun were ready for action.

"I do hope we get something to do. The rat hunts were getting a bit tedious."

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Hathin just shakes his head at the question of whether specific orders exist.

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

"Yes, and it will be nice to get off this ship and feel some real dirt under my feet as well.
Plus, dirtside, we might get a chance to snag some fresh food once in awhile."

Rakuen seems a nice enough place. Zochel opines as he scans through what scant information is available.

Could be fun.

I doubt anyone is missing. Likely the local PDF force only ever existed on paper. Whoever was pocketing the funds screwed up and ran once an inquisitor noticed. I mean seriously, there is nothing here what's the worst that could happen?

Male Orc Expert 5

Will get you planet side this weekend hopefully tonight.

Male Orc Expert 5

There's somethign sinister about a devourer. The way it opens at the front and sucks in the lives and equipment and spews them out again. Packing into it the feeling strikes you that this devourer is brand new. The dents and burn scars usually present on the outer hull of these things as they drop through an atmosphere are non-existant.

The paint, the fittings on the seat, the cushions everything is brand new. It's almost unsettling but also refreshing as most of the vehicles and equipment you've experienced has been decades to centuries old.

As you stow your gear and strap in to the uncomfortable stand up bicycle seats that feel far too intimate to have been designed by a person accustomed to sitting down in any capacity. As the engines rumble and you feel the drop ship plummet from the frigate and towards the planet like the fist of an angry god your breakfast flies to the roof of your mouth held in only by pride and the g forces holding your mouth shut. The temperature rises in the cabin by a few degrees and slowly, agonizingly you feel the descent slow and the drop ship stabilize. It's only then when someone loses their breakfast. Followed by some cursing and uneasy laughter at another's expense.

A screen flickers just above your head. Everyone looks up as the platoon lieutenants voice crackles over the vox. "Alright ladies I'll keep this short and simple. We're landing at Fort x-113 located on the planets primary landmass roughly one hundred clicks away from the capital."

The image changes to a clear satellite image of a series of rectangular structures surrounded by a thick pentagonal wall. At each corner of the wall you recognize the outline of heavy twin bolter turrets. A red arrow appears on the image pointing to a large clearing, possibly a landing pad, near the middle of the structure.

"We're here to occupy this structure until proper replacements can come in. That said I want this place cleaned out and the cobwebs knocked down before we unpack." The lieutenants voice slurs slightly not yet free of the effects of spacer bootleg. "I need squads A through C to clear the outerwall and give a status report on the defenses. D and E to clear and secure the barracks and hospital. Squad F your squad I want you to enter the command center from the lower garage and clear up to the roof. Orders of engagement are to secure survivors and terminate anything that shoots first or doesn't look human. Pass any questions on to your sargeants and don't be sloppy. Any man dies out there I will personally raise their asses from the dead and kill them again."

Seems easy enough. The command center is the biggest building near the middle. Also the most well defended in any guard base and lies directly north of the drop point.

As the roar of the landing engines fire your pneumatic harnesses loosen and you begin pulling them over your head and stepping away from the invasive bicycle seats to retrieve your gear and climb and grip into formation to exit the mouth of the devourer.

Their's an all too long moment of hesitation and a sudden metallic thump as the devourer lands opening it's great maw to spill its load of troops into the fort. Exiting with your squad you immediately spot the large structure that represents your target. An angular gray brick against a blue green sky.

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Hathin doesn't ask questions as the briefing's delivered... get in purge and cleanse was good enough for him.

Squinting into the sky Hathin grimaces and swallows before drawing on his Sergeant's voice to bellow orders "Right-o lads, get to it. Zaltys on point with me, Cormaeg and Zochel ten steps behind us. Cross the ground quick and we'll stack there" pointing to a spot near to the the entrance to the lower Garage where they could hug some cover and plan the near assault... and check the auspex.

"Doubletime and save the chatter till we're clear of the mothership."

WS 40 | BS 47 | ST 36 | TN 32 | AG 38 | PER 36 | INT 25 | WILL 35 | FELL 30 Wounds 15/15 | Fate Points 3/3 | current lasclip 59/60 | current meltaclip 4/5

Zaltys listened to the briefing without much of an expression on his face.
Cleaning up the command center. I guess we're back to rat hunting. Oh well.

Zaltys looked around when they exited the Devourer and quickly fell in line when sergeant De'Lark bellowed his order.
"Acknowledged sir!"

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Grumbling Hathin mumbles "I ain't no Sir..."

WS 40 | BS 47 | ST 36 | TN 32 | AG 38 | PER 36 | INT 25 | WILL 35 | FELL 30 Wounds 15/15 | Fate Points 3/3 | current lasclip 59/60 | current meltaclip 4/5

... Well I suppose my character normally knows what he has to say to acknowledge what his sergeant had said ... I went for the typical "sir yes sir" approach. So what is it he has to say to Sergeant De'Lark to avoid further situations like this?

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Sarge or Sergeant works just fine :)
The sirs are typically the lieutenants and Commissar types.

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

Cormaeg quickly Picks up his lasgun and falls into position, waiting for the others to start moving.

Guess I'm covering them then? Heh, better not shot anyone by mistake this early...

"Ready to go sarge, ready ready."

Zochel falls into formation behind Sgt. De"Lark.

Thinking: Hmm....Garage, could be something useful there...

Question to Tark: Based on the map/image how many floors are we looking at? Less than 10 or is the command center big?

Male Orc Expert 5

It's a 4 story building but is still rather large by being much wider than it is tall each floor being about two foot ball fields long on a side. While grunts like yourselves would remain blissfully unaware about the specifics in its construction you can guess that the.

Pushing forward and huddling behind a rockcrete barrier alongside the dirt road leading into the massive metal shudder of the garage you check the auspex and find to your annoyance that the device cannot penetrate the hardened exterior of the building. Doing a scan for pathogens and chemicals yields negative results. The atmosphere is breathable save an above average amount of harmless airborne algae and fungal spores none of which trigger a toxic alert on the auspex.

The metal shutter itself is quite large and big enough to allow two tanks to drive out side by side. The security checkpoint next to it with it's flimsy extendable metal bar coming out of the little white building seems almost comical next to the massive shutter which would no doubt shrug off concentrated fire from the aforementioned tanks while it would disintegrate completely in the backwash. The little side extension of the building seems to have a single door leading inside.

No one seems to be inside the check point.

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Smoothing his mustache out as he waits for the report from the auspex, Hathin muses "Right... I don't have a good feckin feeling lads, so we'll just have to keep our eyes open on this eh? Thoughts are Zaltys and me take the checkpoint, then we'll call you forward when it's clear and we go in by the wee door there... thoughts?"

WS 40 | BS 47 | ST 36 | TN 32 | AG 38 | PER 36 | INT 25 | WILL 35 | FELL 30 Wounds 15/15 | Fate Points 3/3 | current lasclip 59/60 | current meltaclip 4/5

"Seems like the best approach. So I'm good to go when you are Sarge." Zaltys responded

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

"Right sarge, we'll be covering you from here."

Switching the lasgun in his hands to semi automatic fire mode, Cormaeg begins to slowly sweep back and forth, ready to supply covering fire if needed.

"Check boss. We're right behind you."

Zochel crouches low behind the barrier and tries to spot the security cameras.

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Lark gives a short nod, takes a breath, puts his chainsword in one hand and then hustles over to the checkpoint...

WS 40 | BS 47 | ST 36 | TN 32 | AG 38 | PER 36 | INT 25 | WILL 35 | FELL 30 Wounds 15/15 | Fate Points 3/3 | current lasclip 59/60 | current meltaclip 4/5

Zaltys quickly follows suit. Hustling with Lark to the checkpoint, lasgun at the ready.

Male Orc Expert 5

Zochel does spot a security camera though its orientation seems more concerned about vehicles on the road.

"Bloody sarge is awfully paranoid." One of the squad mutters as Zaltys and Hathin hustle to the checkpoint.

"Yeh, isn't this place suposed to be deserted anyway?" Another one responds.

When Hathin gets to the checkpoint itself it turns out to be, in fact, deserted. A worn but comfortable looking chair is turned towards the unlocked outside door of the check point. Within is also a desk with a snowy but silent view monitor, a stack of dataslates, and a well loved looking novel sitting next to them held open by a mug of...well something. Whatever it was is being silently consumed by some kind of mold growing over the top of it. Centimete long tendrils of the stuff flicks the air giving the whole growth a sense of crawling. A red and green button on the wall next to the chair retracts and extends the bar from the front of the garage door.

The metal door itself into the building is much more impressive. A metal shutted, up now, would descend over top of it for additional protection. The door itself seems more at home on a ship than on a building with four sliding panels that would lock in place. Should power go out for any reason it would take some high yield explosives or a very angry space marine to get through it. A numbered panel to the right of it still looks like it has some power so neither may be required.

Question for Tark: could a Las-cutter get through the door? Just in case we felt like doing gratuitous property damage.

Zochel settles a tad more comfortably against the rock.

"Yup, everyone ran off to warp-knows-where. Until we know why I'd let the man be paranoid if it pleases him. Might keep us from joining them."

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Frowning for a few moments, Lark turns and waves forward the rest of the squad - singling out Zochel as he draws near "See if you can get the garage door open Zochel. Be better to go through there if we can." before he steps into the checkpoint and browses the dataslates idly.

"Right boss!

Zochel hustles across the kill zone to the big door.

"Hmmm I wounder if they left you locked?"

Zochel gives the panel a quick once over for anything that does not belong and then tries anything obvious to open the door. Failing to find a button marked 'open' the operator starts in on the control panel.

{Not sure how or what skills would apply so here are some rolls to ignore.
Scrutiny, untrained: 1d100 ⇒ 14 vs. Perception -20 or 20,
Security, untrained: 1d100 ⇒ 36 vs, Intelligence -20 or 5,
Tech Use, trained: 1d100 ⇒ 46 vs. Intelligence +10 or 35.
So Scrutiny succeeded but unless the door was unlocked or maintained by poorly trained gerbils we are likely taking the servants entrance.}

Male Orc Expert 5

[ooc]With time, yes, a las-cutter could get through the personnel door but not through the garage one. Btw I need a check from you. Roll a d100 with the idea of going under your score. This is easy enough for you so it's at a +10

Zochel Intelligence (Tech-use) +10:
You find no way to open the garage door from outside the building. However with another check you could use your combitool to bypass the electronic lock on the personnel door.

Is Hathin literate?

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Hathin is indeed illiterate... he's after the pretty pictures :P

Male Orc Expert 5

Sadly Hathin finds no pretty pictures. Just a bunch of lists that have no meaning to him.

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

I believe we're waiting on explicit confirmation if Zochel could open the roller shutter.
If not, then it's in through the side door with Hathin at point (as he's got the chainsword).

Male Orc Expert 5

Ah. Was waiting for him to roll again but fuggedabootit.

No, Zochel actually fails to find any mechanism to operate the shutter from the outside. He could tech-use the panel with his combitool and perhaps bypass the security on the servants entrance.

TarkXT wrote:

Noting that Zochel's not having any luck with the shutter Hathin shifts the squad's attention to the side door.

I'm assuming that this is the servant's entrance? So we need a tech-use from Zochel again?

Male Orc Expert 5

Yup. Or someone else. Or you can just get annoyed and hack/explode it apart. It's still quite a sturdy door.

{Crap I thought I posted.... In any case I blew that roll.}

Trying the combi-tool on the panel tech use: 1d100 ⇒ 32 vs trained tech-use of 35. Hey what do you know! Assuming normal difficulty Zochel managed to do something!

The something likely involves alarms, automated heavy stubbers, and hordes of fungal zombies but it is still something!

Male Orc Expert 5

Nah. Just an infinite swallowing darkness with a small beacon of light forever giving hope and forever being out of reach.

The panel opens up as Zochl manages the bypass and the sunlight from outside pours in revealing a small portion of a massive parking garage. The rest you can't see by dint of the pitch blackness of the basement.

The rockcrete floor is perfectly smooth and barely scratched by the movement of people through this door, a testament to it's lack of use.

Without another lightsource the only thing you can see is a small light in what appears to be a window near the center of the hungering bleakness.

Perception -10:
You can make out a large humanoid figure's shadow on the far wall from the light.

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

Awareness -10: 1d100 ⇒ 8

Cormaeg inches closer to the sarge and whispers "Sarge, there is someone in there, someone large..."

{Go into the light: 1d100 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 vs Perception 40. So success w/1 degree? Right?}

"Contact!" Zochel manages to blurt as he fumbles with the combi tool and Las-gun.

If possible Zochel crouches behind the doorframe and directs the beam from a lamp pack towards where the figure should be.

To the figure in the dark: "Hello? We are from the army, we are here to help."

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

Cormaeg is a little taken aback at his attempts of subtlety is somewhat ruined by Zochels overt action.

Uh...maybe that was the right thing to do anyway...

Male Orc Expert 5

The figure does not respond.

Zotchel was exposed by the giant door opening. No way to hide that. By immediately speaking and shining a light Zochel drew all the attention to him leaving you lot with possible surprise and retreat options. It also got all the folks in the garage to look into the bright pouring through the open door into the very dark garage. Goodbye night vision.

Tark: Does the light reach? Anything to be seen?

Male Brawler WS 47, BS 34, S 41, T 52, Ag 32, Int 30, Per 26, WP 38, Fel 39, Wounds 16/16, FP 2/4

I'm not saying it was the wrong thing to do, after all, if it was an enemy and it suspected Cormaeg had spotted it, it probably would have opened fire.
Sometimes, the big hammer is better than the scalpel haha.

As for your roll, in Only war, succeeding counts as one degree, so if it had been +10, then your roll would have been with two degrees of success.
...
I think...

I think you are correct. This is an odd system but it does feel right for Warhammer.

Male Orc Expert 5

Didn't notice the light hang on.

The light penetrates the darkness and reveals a mostly empty garage. The figure does not stir nor become more visible than its shadow as the light reveals the outline of what looks to be a mechanic's shop of some sort propped against a massive central column which probably represents the entry ways into the upper level.

The light also reveals the profile of some large treaded vehicle parked next to the workshop. Probably a chimera apc though it's difficult to make out at this distance.

The sound of the door rolling up draws Hathin from the command post to just inside the boomgate to look. His features harden at Cormaeg's comment before Zochel's call precludes anything but direct action. Hathin reports over his shoulder to the rest of the squad "Weapons hot and take a bead" before holding his chainsword to one side where it's ready at a moment's notice. In his best outside voice he booms towards the humanoid figure he can't quite make out, but trusts is there "It is your lucky day! We are the 1st Black Regiment of the Emperor's own Imperial Guard here to secure the building. If you are friendly, come slow and steady into the light... if you are not... we will light your arse the feck up!"

From there Hathin squints as he tries to see if the words engendered a response...

"Got it Sarge."

Zaltys aimed his lasgun and takes the shot.
Let's see if I'm doing it right:
Half action to aim for +10 on my Ballistic Skill, half action for Standard Attack providing another +10, if within 50 ft another +10 for firing at short range
Ballistic Skill vs 67 or 77 - other modifiers: 1d100 ⇒ 30
If no evasion reaction, hit location is reverse of the ballistic skill roll --> 03 --> Head location
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
