Jorag |
Following Li's lead, Jorag moved to the fallen elf, administering his stabilizing spell once more. "Gather round and let Kurgess wash away the marks of our trial."
Channeling Energy to heal the party. If the elf is alive, Jorag will wait for the group to bind her, then Channel Energy with her in range so she can be awakened.

Quite displeased with the fruit of his efforts, Jorag looked everyone over, checking if it had at least been sufficient.

If after the three channels, there are still wounds on more than one of his allies, he will channel the final time

Mikhaere |
Mikhaere tends to the crocodile's wounds and shifts it as best he can into a relatively safe spot, shielded by reeds from any wandering predators.
It should be unconscious anyway, since it took nonlethal damage.
Heal: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Capricornus |
She has 20 mundane arrows, 16 Silver arrows, a +1 Str Composite Longbow, a Scimitar, Studded Leather armor, and four Scrolls. No incriminating evidence as such.
The Crocodile is indeed unconscious, and while Mikhaere tends to it, the others bind and stabilize the Elf - a rough-looking character, despite her Elven beauty. When she wakes, there is a flash of fear in her eyes that changes to defiance. "I'd rather die than become one of you!" she says. "Kill me now or bite me and I'll do the deed myself later."
Jorag |
"Well this is certainly a curious turn of events." Jorag said with surprise and a smile on his face. "You chose to attack us in spite of our assurances that we wished only to talk, yet it would seem you have us confused with someone else." He crouched by her side. "You may think us to be Moon Touched, but we are not. True, a few of our group show signs of the curse..." he motioned towards them "...But that is the cause of a far greater threat than the disease of Lycantrophy. Do you know of the Druids? They are the cause of the transformation, and we seek to stop them."
Looking at the damage sustained, Jorag used all his Channels, healing a total of 11 damage to everyone.
Mikhaere |
"Not the druids, some druids," Mikhaere pipes up from by the riverside, his voice indignant but dry.
Daeris Moonhunter |
Daeris gives the bound elf a disapproving glare, shaking her head as she exclaims once more in Elvish.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
To be sure she is not lying and maybe get a read on her reaction to judge if she's succeeded at killing people already. Can I add the bow and arrows as temp gear?
Jorag |
"Leave? You would rather go alone than join us in common cause?" Jorag arched a brow, placing his hands on his hips, looking like a disapproving parent. It might even have been effective had the elven woman not been many decades his senior. "I used to think like you, that I could succeed by my own strength alone..." he paused, one hand reaching to his chest, seemingly clutching at some phantom pain at the memory. "...but the reality of the matter is, for every successful loner, there lie a hundred like him or her dead."
Untying her bonds, he motioned for her to leave "But I am not in the habit of forcing a contestant into the ring. Go if you must, and may Kurgess bring you better fortunes down the road."
Suddenly remembering his seniority didn't afford him the right to decide for the group, he looked around at the others sheepishly. "Eeeh, that is, assuming you all agree..."
Archangel Uriel |
"Before you depart, can you tell us of any other beasts or men you have come across out here? We are on a mission to cleanse this curse from the land and will be grateful for your information." Uriel says, trying not to snarl.
Mikhaere |
Mikhaere gives the croc a final pat on the head and stands up. "Your friend here will be fine, but he'll need a few hours rest to shake off that spell. Take it easy until he recovers."
Capricornus |
Leaving the Elf and her companion to their own devices, after having confiscated her weapons, the Pathfinders resume their trek to the Briar henge.
There are four scrolls that haven't been identified, by the way.
Approaching from the South, Briar Henge is a bristling fortress. The compound is roughly circular and approximately 100 feet across. The walls are made of tangled thorn bushes twelve feet high, although the compound does not appear to have a roof. The only break in the prickly wall is a gap five feet wide and eight feet high. Hanging ivy covers this doorway and blocks the view of the interior of the compound.
The entrance mentioned is on the North side.
Jorag |
Keep forgetting Identifying is Spellcraft based
During their walk, Jorag took the time to look at the scrolls, trying to discern their purpose. He was slow and methodical in his examination, knowing that his grasp of such things weren't sufficient to answer the question quickly.
Take 10 on Spellcrafting the Scrolls for a 15 on each.
Daeris Moonhunter |
Daeris creeps forward, careful to stay out of sight as she looks for traps and hidden dangers ahead.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Perception for traps: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
With a name like Briar Henge, I'm guessing the wall is not climbing friendly?
Archangel Uriel |
Uriel attempts to Detect Evil, walking around the thorny fort...
Capricornus |
Taking 10 won't do it, unfortunately.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Daeris moves cautiously closer and looks at the briar walls of the Henge. She figures it can be climbed, but not without suffering significant harm from the thorns. She does not find any traps, though in searching along the outside of the wall she does locate a point where the briars are particularly thin.

Mikhaere |
I briefly regret trading away wilderness stride. ;)
Mikhaere takes a close look at the thinned out patch of briars Daeris discovered. "Looks like it might be a back entrance or something. Anyone got an axe or blade to clear the brambles with?"
Daeris Moonhunter |
Daeris peers carefully through the thinned brambles, trying to determine how to best to move through without getting shredded or caught by the thorns and then plunges through.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Roll to minimize damage?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 (I tried to think what to use here but couldn't be sure. Would Acrobatics work? Like a tuck and roll?)

Jorag |
Unable to discern the function of the two last scrolls, Jorag stuffed them into his backpack. The two healing scrolls he tugged into his belt for easy access should he need them.
Looking at Daeris go through the hole, he hesitated for a moment, then shrugged with a smile and tried to match her elegant tumble.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Perception (other side): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Archangel Uriel |
Uriel shakes his head at Daeris, then follows her, using his shield and armor to prevent injury and make the hole bigger. "Should have let the steel shield go first..." he mumbles to her when he gets inside the wall and stands next to her.

The Pathfinders push their way through the gap, suffering cuts and scrapes along the way, but ending up more or less safely on the other side.
Mikhaere suffers 2 dmg.
Uriel suffers 2 dmg.
Li Shuo suffers 2 dmg.
Jorag suffers 5 dmg.
Daeris suffers 1 dmg.
Six hammocks hang suspended from the thorns here, crisscrossing along the thorny walls. Two oaks provide shade and shelter from wind and rain. A few clothes hang from the thorny walls. The hammocks and clothes seem simply made. Near one of the tree trunks is a large, sturdy chest. Near the other is a smaller chest, whose open lid reveals several scrolls and tomes. Gaps in the walls allow exit to the northwest, north, and northeast.
Jorag |
"Well, that went less well than I had hoped." Jorag muttered, pulling thorns out of his body in several places. "Which way first?" he proceeded to ask, after a short incantation to heal his own wounds.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Bless converted into Cure Light Wounds.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Li Shuo |
Li ignores his own wounds, though he is bruised and bleeding.
He stalks around the perimeter, bow in hand, looking for enemies.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Jorag |
I was surprised by the amount of damage Li has taken, so went back and checked the last combat. Seems I had a very wrong idea of how the party had taken damage, meaning my previous use of Channel was rather misguided. Ill stand by the first three channels that healed 6 total, but was wondering if you would be alright with me having not used the fourth? And then using that Cure Light just now on Li instead?
If allowed, Li should be at 17 HP, and ill remain at 8
Daeris Moonhunter |
5 damage with an 18 check roll? Does that mean there no way to mitigate the damage? Don't forget you found healing scrolls, Jorag!
Daeris plucks a lone thorn from her leg and merely shrugs at Uriel's grumbling. She looks over the chests, "Doubtful the relic would be here, but it doesn't hurt to look. Or so we hope..."
Perception on small chest: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Perception on large chest for traps: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Mikhaere |
Hey GM, would you mind updating the link at the top of the page to point to the Henge? :)
Mikhaere has a peek down the northwestern tunnel, apparently ignoring the presence of brambles caught in his feathers..
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22
Capricornus |
There's not actually any way to avoid the damage from the thorns in the scenario.
As the others post themselves at the entrances, Daeris examines the chests. No traps are found, but the larger chest of locked, but she does locate a key in the bottom of the smaller chest which fits the lock. Inside the larger chest she finds, among other things, a Wand and a Scroll.
The passages are very winding, and neither Mikhaere or Uriel can see very far. Then, after a few moments, emerging from the brambles themselves is a tiny, vaguely humanoid creature that seems to be made completely of bundles of sticks wound with thorny vines.
I will allow Knowledge checks and speech before Initiative occurs.

Round 1
Li Shuo, Daeris
Foe
Mikhaere, Uriel, Jorag
Mikhaere |
Know (Nature): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Mikhaere turns about a little too late to stop the walking stick creature, but he immediately knows what it is. He'd seen some of the little blighters back in the swamps and forests of his homeland, although they were little more than annoyances more than anything. "Twigjack," he explains with a sour expression, "annoying little things that travel along the undergrowth and shoot out thorns everywhere. I suggest fire - and lots of it."
Li Shuo |
Li puts a pair of arrows into the air.
Flurry of Arrows: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 1 = 121d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 = 111d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6
Daeris Moonhunter |
Daeris follows Li's example and pulls the sniper's longbow from her back and fires an arrow at the Twigjack.
Attack w/ Composite Longbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Capricornus |
Two arrows stick into the Twigjack's twiggy body, and it hisses in a remarkably insect-like fashion before aiming its arms at Li, Jorag and Daeris, and a storm of thorns erupt from its limbs.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 5) = 15
Li, Daeris and Jorag take 7 damage each.
Round 1
Li Shuo, Daeris
Twigjack
Mikhaere, Uriel, Jorag
Mikhaere |
Mikhaere sidles up behind the Twigjack and swipes at it, although comes out of the affair cursing as the tiny spikes hurt his hand more than his claws hurt it.
Claw (flank): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 2 = 12
Damage (doubt it): 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Jorag |
Going stiff as a board with pain, Jorag gasped feebly, falling to one knee, blood oozing from several puncture wounds.
"Cursed beast!" he muttered through gritted teeth, forcing himself to stand.
"Li, be a dear and kill it, Kurgess wishes it so...as do I." he said, waving his one hand towards the monk as he shuffled away from the melee, the other hand clutching at his wounds.
Standard Action, Bit of Luck Li (4/7 remaining). Move Action, get the hell out of spray range.
Daeris Moonhunter |
Bleeding from multiple thorn wounds, Daeris circles the creature seeking the clearest path of attack and fires another arrow.
Attack w/ Composite Longbow: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 5 - 4 = 18 Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Li Shuo |
Badly injured himself, Li simply inclines his head a fraction to acknowledge Jorag's words.
He fires backs up a few feet and fires twice.
5' step. Flurry of Arrows w/ Bit of Luck and Perfect Shot.
First arrow: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 = 111d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 61d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 1 = 12 <- 12 (Boo!)
Second arrow: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 1 = 221d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9 <- 22
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
Capricornus |
Li and Daeris unleash a flurry of return fire. Two of their arrows strike home in the swirling melee of attacks from Mikhaere and Uriel. The Twigjack is rocked back by Daeris' shot, but Li's strikes the fey creature in its midsection, severing the vines that hold it together. The tiny figure drops to its knees as small twigs spill from its abdomen, its thorny hands trying to hold them in, before it collapses in an unrecognizable heap of kindling on the ground.
Combat over
Jorag |
I think Li should be at 8 HP (when I said 17 before the fight, I failed to include the 2 damage from the bush. That is all assuming that Capris silence in regards to my retcon request meant he accepted it though...
Sitting down with a thud and a gasp, Jorag only barely managed to force himself to stay in a seated position. He felt so tired, but he had to keep going. Waving the others close, he murmured almost inaudible words under his breath, the familiar glow of Kurgess' magic surrounding him.
Channel Energy: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Getting up, pain still visible on his face in spite of his attempts to hide it, he pulled out the scrolls "Seems these will have to be spent sooner than I had thought. Still, better safe than sorry."
Unrolling the scrolls, he recited the incantations held within, one after the other.
Cure Light Wounds on Li: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Cure Light Wounds on Daeris: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
His brow furrowing with worry, he looked at his companions with uncertainty "It seems Kurgess intends to truly tests us this day. It will have to do..."
Mikhaere |
Mikhaere grumbles and kicks the pile of sticks as he rummages around in his pack. Soon enough he draws out a wand - although it looks more like a mangrove root than anything.
"Alright, alright, who's hurt? Get on over here."
Go ahead and roll your own CLW totals if you need healing, just let me know how many charges to remove.
