Chapter 1 - Arrival

3 people marked this as a favorite.

"You don't remember your parents. To be fair, nobody else did either. Your first memories were of the learning center in Lohne. The clockwork nannies were the closest thing you could consider family. The learning center had no formal name, but it was more of a city than a building. Children of all ages lived here until adulthood, then they were sent to Oldenburg to live out the rest of their lives, you supposed. No one ever came back and the instructors at the learning center weren't forthcoming with any answers that didn't have to do with your education.
They broke you and made you in their image. There was but one god. Other beliefs were heresy, but they allowed atheism and agnosticism. Hard work was the only valued skill. Creativity was stifled except if it could be used for whatever Oldenburg asked for. They taught you a useful profession as well as training in a career. Schedules were rigid and corporal punishment meted out freely.
Then you made it to adulthood, turned in your uniform, got your train ticket to Oldenburg and your wage ticket, and started your new life...

The wasteland stretches out before you, only the hardiest of plants managing to survive out there. The cooling unit on the train was going out and the unbearable heat from the outside was creeping in. The window was hot to the touch, but you couldn't help but look out as the three-tiered city of Oldenburg rose from the horizon like some foreboding colossus. Soon, the train pulled into the station, the gas lamps set every ten feet apart and you were shuffled along to the North Registration Center. Separated into groups of 10, the guards in neatly pressed grey uniforms sent you into classrooms and told you to wait."

Well, I'm starting up another homebrew, this one a blend of Dark Sun, Eberron, Fallout and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (maybe a smidge of the stereotypical Wild West, depending on how things go). The tone of the game may change as we progress, so I am not saying anything is set in stone. I have 3 players already and I'm looking for 1-3 more. Now for the not-so-fun nitty gritty stuff:

The Golden Rule: No douchebaggery will be tolerated. If you offend another player or me, you will get a warning. Second time, you're out. If you are offensive to an intolerable degree, there will be no warning.

1. This will be a mature game. Rating-wise, it'd be a hard R/NC-17. If you can't be (or pretend to be) open-minded/civil/mature about it, please don't apply.

2. I make no promises on posting rate. The three players joining usually post in the evening/night CST (GMT-5:00). The other game I run with them moves fairly quickly and 50 posts a day is not uncommon. I will not demand a constant poster, but someone who can keep up with it and post once a day at the very least is preferred. Most important: Read all the posts!

3. Please try to give me forewarning about absences. I understand about emergencies and, personally, I will try to give advance notice if I will be unavailable, but I am usually here daily. I don't want to bot your character for extended periods of time.

4. There will be more role-playing than roll-playing. Therefore, submit a character with depth. If your concept is no more than the 3 F's (fighting, food and fooling around), it is likely that your character will be passed over. Give your character room to evolve and we'll be fine.

Now for character guidelines:

Level 1
20 pt. buy
Any Paizo Races (build-your-owns will be considered, follow the race guidelines in the Advanced Race Guides)
Any classes out of the core books [CRB, APG, UM, and UC] (except for synthesist summoner, I know what they can do. And absolutely no 3PP classes)
2 traits
Average starting gold

I'd also like a backstory, I know I didn't give much wiggle room, but your creativity is being judged here.

I'll close this after Friday, July 25th, or ten character submissions (whichever comes first).

Hellos....who doesn't love Steampunk? Count me in!

Ah, I always forget something with such long posts:

You get a free skill point in a profession of your choice. Be reasonable with it.

You get Lohnen (basically German) as a free language.

This opens up character concepts I would not normally make for fantasy. Let me see if I can come up with something.

Would you consider an Adept? Aneirin pretended toward agnosticism but firmly believes in another power than the One True god. He has no clear idea what that maybe however.

Aneirin would move into a Core or Base Class upon leveling up. He just needs to find out how his faith manifests

[If possible a deviation from the usual backstory:]

Aneirin was brought to the learning centers as an orphan from an ocean-transport accident in which his parents and two brothers were lost. Prior to that he lived by the sea with strong pagan pagan roots in his community - he has kept knowledge of fishing and trap making and tinkers with making armor and weapons - his time in the Learning Centre awakened a certain desire for freedom and the skills necessary to preserve that freedom.

[Otherwise I'll go with something else that relates who he came to have the skills and profession he has in between the Learning Centre and the North Registration Centre or during his time in the Learning Centre]

He comes to the wasteland raw, but ready, at least in his heart. With his belief in another way than that of the One, "True" God, Aneirin feels blessed.

@Aneirin: Children are brought to the learning center as soon as they are born, so that are molded into perfect citizens without pesky idealism or independent thought. However, I will accept a daring adventure of your parents breaking the law for their son. This means your treatment at the learning center would have been harsher.

As for an adept...It would fit in with your backstory, but just accept that you'd be weaker than other PCs.

If you want to fiddle with it, you've got plenty of time.

Liberty's Edge

I'll start a character background tonight, should be a slow day at work.

*Fingers Crosses*

I am interested! I am intrigued by the whole clockwork settlement with the surrounding wastelands. How about a character who despite all of the rigid, strict up-bringing, still ends up being... weird, as a result of unusual parentage or an innate something. She would be strangely fascinated, even drawn to the Wastelands. Perhaps she'd even have odd dreams or visions somehow relating to her birth. (Really working with the idea that she doesn't remember her parents!)

The character I have in mind would be either a blight druid or a sorceress with something like the aberrant bloodline.
Would these classes and this concept compliment the current group?

If so, I should be able to have a character built sometime this weekend. ^_^

Flashohol, Mark Thomas 66 and Phaedra Rose are the three pre-selected for the game. Only Phaedra has a character concept, which would be a dhampir gunslinger. So either concept would be fine.

What do you mean when you say "pre-selected"?

Those are the three players I mentioned I had in the first post, so I'm looking for 1-3 additional players who can be reliable to round out the party. I guess I could have explained that better.

Thanks! I have seen some games that were first come first serve and it was never stated as such. I am most relieved!

I will being the process of a concept as soon as I finish lunch with the girlfriend.

I try to be fair :)

I am interested. working on a urban barbarian hobgoblin

I would like to build a custom race using the ARG. I am not at my computer just now, so I will post more details once I am able to give more. I will be online again in a couple of hours.

I really gotta work on the background for this because I'm kinda taking two different ideas and meshing them together. With the rigidness of the society, explaining my background might a bit difficult....but I'll do my best. I won't be able to do much of anything though until I'm off work Monday, possibly Tues. I can't think on such little sleep.

Alright, just keep it at 16 RP (Racial Points) or below.

@Aneirin Hello.....I know you.....hehehe. It's good to see you again, I hope things are going well for you.

Noted on the time and thanks for the heads up on the harsh treatment...

I may change to an actual class - perhaps Inquisitor, Paladin or Oracle. I actually found the Adept fitting a young graduate in a Steampunk-ish setting.

Ok, I have a picture I found while perusing Deviant Art. It is reptilian, small or medium depending on how one chooses to look at it. Here is the image link. I have some basic ideas on what they might have for racial abilities, but have little experience building a race. Any feedback and insight from anyone who wishes to contribute is most welcome.

Or I could make something that looks like this.

[Bows] Thank you my jade and toothsome friend. Well, as you can see, the Piper ain't got me yet... ;) Nice to see you again!

I guess this setting's a bit darker, but, as I stated, it doesn't have to stay the same. I prefer the players being more in charge of their world than I am. I'm not going to stop somebody from being inspired because of the setting. I'm flexible. I just provide the backdrop, additional actors and good dose of storytelling.

@GMF: I'd start with the kobold race as presented and deconstruct it to your liking.

Liberty's Edge

---Lizardfolk used to be playable in 3.5 could start there as well.
(Claws or bite, Natural armor, Hold Breath?, Climb/swim/stealth bonuses, low-light etc.)

Current character is a Changling or Half-elf Summoner. With as much steampunk flavor as I can mush into the Eidolon and my spells. Profession would be engineer so she'll work on machines of all kinds and her Eidolon will most likely be robotic themed.

Photo.

Current Stats: Str, 10 Dex,14 Con,12 Int,14 Wis, 10 Cha 17

I should have at least an outline for a background up tonight before bed.

@Flashohol: Neat!

Thanks.

Would you allow for a second gunslinger? I have an idea for a Kitsune gunslinger using the pistolero archetype.

Edit: Also, how do you feel about the use of 3rd party feats?

In breaking down the race, I think I would like to make this something of an experiment. In that I mean I would like to have this character be something of a creation. Maybe cloned, or a reptile that had humanoid genes mixed in to see what the outcome would be. They would be the final result in a long process.

That's what I have come up with so far. Thoughts, anyone?

The 'Lizard' from spider-man kind of thing, right?

I was thinking along those lines as well for a background. Not in the extreme sense your talking about, but experiments on children kind of thing.

If it's a strong enough idea, I'll allow another gunslinger.

As for 3rd party feats, give me a link or such and I'll look it over.

Yeah, an experiment might work. Something to survive out in the wasteland.

GM Dust wrote:

I think I like this idea. An experiment to see what would happen when they melded human genes into a reptile. The mother had been altered, but in the end she died from complications when they changed too much too soon, though she had a child, and they survived. They grew up in the Learning Center, and when they hit the equivalent of puberty they began to develop some other abilities that had not been present before. The human side needed to mature before the reptilian side came out.

What do you think?

Sounds like an interesting story. I approve.

Once I have settled on some racial traits and abilities, I am going to want a class that represents how they would develop. I am open to ideas as I peruse the selections.

I intend to have predator-like abilities, and part of the process of being who they are is finding out why they feel the way they do, and how to balance one side with the other.

I will try to make it blend in a way that does not create inter-party conflict, except maybe internally. Trying to balance a rational, reasoning mind with the instinct of a predator. Should be most challenging from an in-character perspective.

Liberty's Edge

Beast totem barbarian or maybe a ranger would both fit I think.

Here's the page about the theme feats. Theme feats are taken in exchange of the 2 starting traits.
The Gunsmith was the I was looking at to use if you allowed it. The feat The Man with Two Guns is God the theme feat that goes with it.

Since most people are sticking to Paizo stuff, I don't think I'll allow that. It's a bit much.

The Exchange

Will be submitting a wizard, Leopaldon Root. I need some time to get him good and ready but I just wanted to let you know of my interest.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Still thinking about the class but defintely human.

I understand completely. I will have to think on a concept a little more.

Hmm. This is cool! I have some character ideas for both Magus and Witch characters. I think both can fit the theme too. :)

Possibly mix both of them and go Hexcrafter Magus. ;)

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

I'll get started on a Rogue. user of gadgets, street-smart.

I am debating which Ability Score Modifier Quality to pick. I can easily select one, but the theme is what I am attempting to stay within. The one I am leaning toward is Flexible.

For other racial abilities, I am looking at the following:

  • Claws
  • Climb
  • Darkvision 120'
  • Jumper
  • Light Blindness
  • Scent
  • Stalker

These abilities are not set, just what I am currently looking at. The final draft may be quite different.

Feedback anyone?

Liberty's Edge

Seems like a pretty good tracker. With Stealth, Alt. Movement and Scent.

Ranger or Barbarian still look like the best fit.

Flashohol wrote:

I agree, though I am going to look at the Advanced Class Guide for the Slayer and see if that would be a good fit. So far it seems like it would be.

GM Dust, may I use the ACG if I desire said class? Or is it off limits?

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

It looks like that would be a perfect Slayer actually.

I'm quite alright with Slayer and other ACG classes.

Liberty's Edge

I actually forgot about those ones but yea.

Technically it is still a Ranger alternate. ;)

I still forget those are out there...

As for the Racial Score Modifier, since you are an "experiment", I'd lean towards either Standard or Specialized. Something didn't happen quite right there or it can reflect a more bestial nature within.
