Male Human Student 1

Greetings My Lady! Let's finalize everything and get to building you a kingdom.

Eleanor's background doesn't make a charter of exploration very sensible. So, would you mind buying your kingdom? The currency is the skulls of your enemies, or more precisely the head of the stag lord presented to Restov. Thoughts?

Also, if you would rather play witch, that is fine too. Summoner does have a number of advantages for soloing though. Why do you prefer master summoner to regular?

Anyway, create your character sheet and let's fill out the background on how your character finds herself at Oleg's, as that seems a good place to start. Also choose another character trait, you've already chosen bastard. Once the background is finished, I look through my deck of Plot Twist and Plot Twist: Background cards for one of each that fit with what you've told me. Sound good?

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

Sounds good. I am posting from my phone so please forgive formatting errors.

I prefer master summoner to summoned for ideological reasons. I think of the summoner as having two primary abilities. First, the ability to summon and the second being the eidolon itself. The master summoner, unlike the standard summoner, can have a summoned monster and the eidolon active at the same time. There is a drawback, the master summonses eidolon is half power compared to a normal summoner, effectively relegating it to skill monkey status. Although status drastically reduces the eidolons combat effectiveness, it keeps the eidolon safe; the eidolon will not be charging the front line.

By contrast,, a standard summoner uses the eidolon as Her primary means of attack. This is tantamount to sacrificing the eidolon as needed. I can't fathom why a summoner would ever want to allow her eidolon to die, so making it the primary combatant makes little sense to me. That is what standard summons are for.

I also don't understand why a summoner would want to dismiss her eidolon for the sake of being able to summon a monster. Again, I think of the eidolon as having an extraordinarily close bond with the summoner. A bond that is far more intimate than the bond between a wizard or witch and her familiar. Voluntarily dismissing the eidolon so she can summon an eagle makes no sense to me.

I prefer the master summoner in greatest part simply because it is the version that makes the most sense, to me.

Male Human Student 1

Hadn't really thought about it that way, but makes sense, especially in Eleanor's case where it is her only friend that isn't dead. What second trait are you considering?

Any ideas on what brings Eleanor to this out of the way trading post?

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

I am thinking that Eleanor needs to build a retinue in order to assert her rightful place once she has the power and timing right. Until that point, it is probably best that she is laying low, just the average pioneer looking to make a name for herself.

I am debating on the Traits, trying to pick ones that thematically make sense over ones that are per se good. For instance, I ruled out bully, bullied, reactionary, and the like because they will not relate to the background even though the bonuses are nice! I am thinking about Ever Wary,(I feel this makes more sense for a good aligned Tiefling than about any other trait) and either Pioneer if my parents are not from Brevoy, or Bastard if they are from Brevoy.

starting gold: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10x10=100g starting if that looks good to you.

I am going to be neutral good, which I see as doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do. She regards that done which ought to be done. Not to be confused with simpleton who hands money to every beggar on the corner. That would just train others to be beggars, for instance.

Male Human Student 1

Where was the tower(Point of origin)? If you aren't quite sure, the Lake of Veils and Mists might be a good spot. It sounds like the perfect place to have a tower built on a rock of an island to hold an unwanted daughter. It's also close to Mendev/Worldwound and Brevoy. Does she travel with her eidolon by her side, it sounds like it, and if so what does she/they do when interacting with others. It does look like an unnatural creature, which it is, afterall. What does it look like?

Here are some interesting things for you from Blood of Fiends

Tiefling Summoner:
Summoner: A tiefling summoner usually discovers that
his eidolon is from a neutral plane or an evil Outer Plane,
regardless of the tiefling’s own alignment. Blood calls to
blood, as they say, and a tiefling who builds his powers in
the summoning arts opens himself to the influences that
shaped his life. A good-aligned tiefling summoner may
work to redeem his eidolon, or the eidolon might slowly
twist its master to the forces of darkness, though always
careful to obey instructions completely.

Also, Rakshasa-Spawn(Beastbrood), is a perfect fit for a future queen. Whether she realizes it or not, Eleanor's path and future plans could hardly be more Rakshasan.

Rakshasa-spawn:
Like their rakshasa ancestors, beastbrood have a taste for
luxury and the finer things in life. Predisposed toward
arrogance, beastbrood believe that they innately deserve
affluence and find any station below that of royalty beneath
them. Despite their haughty demeanor, beastbrood typically
possess a natural charm that actually causes others to often
grant them the deference they consider their birthright.
Unless playing a role, beastbrood always act like aristocrats,
and usually, they get treated as such.
Beastbrood usually develop their distinctive traits after
childhood, often sometime during adolescence. Such
attributes usually hint at an animalistic nature, including
slit pupils, fangs, or coats of fur. Unlike most tieflings,
beastbrood rarely feel a sense of isolation. Even their
bestial features, sleek and well groomed, usually grant
them a feral glamor instead of leading to revulsion.
Beastbrood are most common in Vudra, where rakshasas
are more prevalent, but many leave their homeland for
better prospects abroad as soon as possible. Vudran folklore
has far too many stories about rakshasas to allow their
half-blooded offspring to achieve the lavish lifestyle they
seek, and most Vudrans oust beastbrood as soon as they
are discovered. In other lands, where they are regarded as
merely novel instead of cultural bugaboos, beastbrood find
it much easier to attain the opulence they crave.

Regarding thematics and vs. crunchyness, I open to you the variant tiefling abilities and alternative physical features. Pick the ability you thing fits best, and however many features are need to give Eleanor her look. Remember though, the features should be obvious, but as a beastbrood, not unattractive, especially with your charisma.

Magical Knack
Outland-Exile

Might want to take a lot at these two traits as well.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I finished creating an alias for Eleanor. I am thinking that making the parents be of Westcrown, in Chelax, would make a lot of sense. It is the scene for the Bastards of Erebus AP module, so there are already interesting tie-ins in pace. Also, I think the Hungry Mountains of Ustalav would be a great place to put someone away in a high tower. Tons of open areas, lots of superstitious people, a tiefling would definitely have a hard time in most areas. it would also provide a great reason for Eleanor to be fleeing to Brevoy.

Male Human Student 1

A few questions about the character sheet,

I think acrobatics should be +1, climb -2, escape artist +1, Stealth +1, Swim -3. Where did your increased penalties come from?

As a Master Summoner, your Summon Monster ability is 5+modifer a day, so 9 in your case, not 7.

I don't think Dassa should have +15 perception, +7 seems more likely.
Hit points should be 11. Dassa get's a full first die, just like everyone else. What three evolutions did you give her? I don't see any.

(Not a requirement, but if you are going to do a Master Summoner, you really really want Augment Summons. It'll kinda of save your life. A lot.)

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I chose a prehensile tail, because it is so cool when Hellboy uses his. I chose the feat Armor of the Pit, because Eleanor spent most of her life to this point in a tower, so all the ones based on training or the like, such as improved initiative, just don't make as much sense as picking based on ancestry. I have also chose vestigial wings, which I know is odd for Rakshasa, but I like the aesthetic. having looked at the sampling of Rakshasa found in Bestiary 3 (PP. 224-230), the variance between forms in wild and varied, so I don't think they would be out of the realm of possibility. Otherwise, Beguiling Liar fits seamlessly to the beast blooded by the description you posted above. I also think there are several interesting Tiefling abilities (Blood of Fiends, PP 16-17). If there are any in particular you think would be best, I am open to most any of them. Especially the ones that alter the appearance. I think the +2 to stat ones would be bad, as well as the DR ones.

My favorites off the list are:

See in Darkness: I like the glowing eyes.
Small Size: Always been a fan of small races.

Least favorite:
Appear human.

Most useful for Solo Campaign:
No Sleep.

Edited to answer questions:

I used HeroLabs, so I will go through and check everything. I think it automatically penalizes all skills based on using weapon and wearing armor regardless of whether or not gear is equipped.

Dassah

Feat: Skill Focus, (Perception)
Evolutions:
1pt. Skilled (Perception)
2pt. Limbs (Arms)

Augment summons is the free level 2 feat for Master Summoner.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

Yep, HeroLabs is modifying skills based on hands being full due to crossbow, and armor being equipped. I will manually edit them under the profile.

Edit:
Done.
Added Evolutions to the Dassah specials section, and added a Skills section to Eleanor's Character sheet.

Double checked perception on Dassah:
+8 Skilled, +3 Class Skill, +3 Skill Focus Feat, +1 rank = 15.
If that will be too much, I will move Skill Focus to Survival.

Male Human Student 1

My suggestions for the skill modifiers were based on you wearing armor. I guess having your hands full with the crossbow made a big difference.

Beguiling Liar does fit Rakshasas, but does it fit the NG Eleanor who hasn't had much of a chance to lie habitually? Since you already have a tail, I'd recommend Fiendish Sprinter.

If you like the glowing eyes that see in the dark. Go for it.

Tail, glowing eyes, bestial feet. What am I seeing...?

Thanks for the update on Dassah. What does she/he/it look like.

I'll be doing the first post in gameplay soon. May Faust, The Creator, bless our efforts.

*edit nope. Your perception is fine. I just didn't understand how it could be. Now I do. Cool.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I finished up Dassah, adding appearance and skills tabs there as well.

I added the Alt Trait for glowing eyes, and removed Darkness.

I want her to start out white, pure, and good, almost angelic, almost a reflection of what Eleanor wishes she were. If she leads me astray, her appearance should morph over time into a reflection of her more evil nature, as if she were a living 'portrait of Dorian Gray'. I like the idea of the Eidolon starting out appearing good, and slowly attempting to push Eleanor in the direction of her demonic heritage.

Appearance tab added for Eleanor.

Male Human Student 1

Aaannd We're off! Gameplay is up and posted. (Wow. Horns, ear, eyes, skin, tail, and wings. Nobody'll mistaking you for someone else that's for sure.)

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

well, I avoided the cloven hooves ... Besides, if I blended in well, there would hardly be a reason to flee all the way across the continent..

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I still have to add a horse per Pioneer, but I think it would make more sense to be given the horse to explore with than to just start with one. Besides, the trait simply says horse, and there are 6 (Pony, Combat Pony, Light, Combat Light, Heavy and Combat Heavy). In addition, I am not sure a horse would consider Eleanor normal enough to allow her to ride. So until, or unless, it becomes more important/needed, I will forgo the horse.

Male Human Student 1

Nah. It's my fault to not looking over everything carefully. Thanks for being forgiving on that. I imagine to a horse you pretty much like every other biped of similar size. Details like small wings and tail pale in comparison to 'not-horse' and 'things that give me good' Though I admittedly know very little about horses.

I can see a horse not liking Dassah though. They don't like snakes, and she is an awfully big snake.

*Edit. Opps, I'd assumed Dassah wouldn't be traveling with you, as the weather would kill/unsummon her within a few hours. Mind if we retcon that? I want it to be a surprise you can spring later on.(Now I feel like a horribly evil DM. Stealing, accidently, your horse and now your best friend!)

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

All good. She is vanished for the now, after the first time she perished due to cold, I no longer summon her outside when there are miles to go, until I can buy her a cold weather outfit and a headstone that is...

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I think I have now fixed all issues with character sheet. I am going to comb through tonight when I am off work just to make sure. Looks like a bunch of the things I had thought I had done last night didn't save.

Male Human Student 1

Ah the joys of electronic media.

Here's a picture of the fort. Things are a bit different right now, wagon and tables stored away for the off season, but it gives you an idea. Oleg's Trading Post

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

here is a better link to the Heatstone. I will keep looking for something that is not a one shot 24 hour consumable.

Male Human Student 1

Apologies for my slowness, I'm currently typing out the gameplay segment. My description of the building your are in will be a bit different than the map. If needed I'll draw up a revised map.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

After spending too much time, I settled on picking Endure Elements as my spell at second level. So I have a fix, but it will take a while. Until then I may be investing money in keeping Dassah up.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I don't think they like me much... Yet.

There is exotic mount barding, so I assume it could be modified to just be heavy wool or furs in place of protection items (like heavy leather or steel plates). Or perhaps I can just save up to buy exotic armor/barding and have it insulated.

Male Human Student 1

Yet being the key thing.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I plan to keep letting them know who I am and what I am doing in advance, so they have a moment to gather their courage before I do things they are or may be uncomfortable with.

Male Human Student 1

Probably a wise idea.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

This is my interpretation of the map, please correct me if I am wrong.

The fort is approximately 18x24 five foot squares. Inside, there are 3 pits of some sort, covered by grates, along the north wall. Along the west wall, there is a 5x10 store room, which is closed. In the north-east corner is the home of Oleg and his wife, 6x8. Between to store room and the home is a 3x4 structure of some sort, and south of the home is a long bunkhouse 3x7. Around the outside walls is a walkway, and 4 catapults, one in each corner.

The wagon has been stored in the storehouse, as well as the long tables, leaving most of the interior open and without cover.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

To make posting easier on you (Right now, I am just waiting on Bar Exam results, so my schedule is wide open...) I thought I would post the following:

I am in the Mountain Time Zone, US. I believe Utah is in the same.

I am most active online after 4pm, but I am off and on all day long.

I have about 3 major employment prospects at the moment, 2 Public Defender positions, and a clerkship position. All three will require me to relocate, so at some point, I will be more or less unavailable for a weekend (moving is not that hard, I have far too much practice).

I will post any unexpected absenses.

I work (volunteer) at the local family law self help center Wednesday-Friday, 9 am - 3pm, but I am available off and on even these days, depending on how many clients I have in and their needs.

I also volunteer for more sporadic groups (local youth hockey, voter registration, and such) If anything will keep me from being able to post, again, I will post here.

Male Human Student 1

My schedule is that of a undergraduate with labs of variable time, unknown work schedule and peculiar habits, though most days in the evening I can also be online. Thanks for giving me a bit of schedule by the way, I'll try to have updates at convenient times.

If you are in mountain time, which indeed utah is, what state are you in?

Your interpretation of the map is correct, though they are more ballistas than catapults.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I am in Montana.

I apologize for the length of that last post, I usually try to be much shorter, but I thought it would make life easier on you if you had my complete plan all at once rather than parsed out over several posts. If it is too much I can tone it down for future posts. Trying to simultaneously develop Eleanor, develop Eleanor and Dassah's closeness, set up basic rules for how Dassah and Eleanor will generally approach combat (Eleanor will only dismiss Dassah to spare Dassah the experience of death, or imminent threat of death) and help Oleg and Svetlana without freaking them out any more than I have already done.

Male Human Student 1

Cool.

Post length is fine, I only hope to be able to respond in kind.

Smite:

Smite Evil (Su)

Once per day, a paladin can call out to the powers of good to aid her in her struggle against evil. As a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds her Cha bonus (if any) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.

In addition, while smite evil is in effect, the paladin gains a deflection bonus equal to her Charisma modifier (if any) to her AC against attacks made by the target of the smite. If the paladin targets a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect.

The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability. At 4th level, and at every three levels thereafter, the paladin may smite evil one additional time per day, as indicated on Table: Paladin, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

Eleanor mock up v. 0.1

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

This is my idea

As you can see, I plan to hide in the one room, with the door slightly ajar, 1 foot or so. Dassah on the wall until she spots them, then she will sneak around the corder of the bunk house (Blue line movement). She will wait there until after she fires once on the bandits, then retreat to inside the bunkhouse (Red line movement).

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

I added my Pioneer Horse to my character sheet. Picked Combat Trained Pony. Figure it is a little better than a plain pony, a lot cheaper than a light horse, and no where as powerful as a Combat Trained heavy Horse. Second from the bottom in price as well, only a non-combat pony is cheaper...

Male Human Student 1

Are you sure you aren't a Aasimars? ^_^

Apologies for the disappearance. Power was out at the apartment and had a couple long labs this week. Not great, but best excuse I've got.

The pony is fine. Thanks for giving me a visual on Eleanor and Dassah's combat plan. Unless I state otherwise, any allied NPCs, such Dassah, summons, future party members are under your control during combat. Oleg and Svetlana don't quite count yet.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

No worries.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

The schedule for the foreseeable future will be:

About one hour before dawn, Eleanor will wake up, summon Dassah. Dassah helps Eleanor get ready (dressing, armoring, etc.) Eleanor will then help Dassah do the same.

Eleanor and Dassah will both head to the wall about one half hour before sunrise, and eat breakfast there (If Oleg and Svetlana will deliver).

Eleanor and Dassah will keep watch for a couple hours, then work for the afternoon, taking lunch on the wall for about 2 hours mid day to keep watch.

About one half hour before sunset, we will go back on watch, and stay on watch until about an hour after sunset.

While not on the wall in the morning, I will help Svetlana or Oleg if needed, otherwise; I will nap because a warm bed is a rare luxury. I will spend the evening down time hauling water for baths, because hot baths are even more of a luxury than a warm bed!

Since I am solo, I am made the following assumptions to determine my schedule (I need sleep too!):

(1) The wilderness is dangerous, especially at night. Thus, bandits are unlikely to want to be out in the wilderness at night. Therefore attacks against fort at night are not very likely, besides they want tribute, not to kill us all.

(2) Bandits are likely to come pick up tribute when the occupants are awake, based on assumption 1 the bandits are most likely to arrive around noon (giving them time to ride from camp to the fort, and then to return, in daylight.

Tactical advantage time killers:

If the bandits don't attack tomorrow morning, I will ask Oleg to help me tip one of those huge tables onto its side to make it into a barricade just outside the storage room's doors (gives me 4 walls, and a huge table for cover!).

If Oleg has cleats and is agreeable, (I am not going to disadvantage him just to disadvantage bandits.) we could flood the courtyard to make it icy for the bandits.

If we manage to take care of that, we will inventory what is left of Oleg's stores in case he has something useful, but I don't want to expend his inventory.

Male Human Student 1

I thought it would be a few days, but the dice gods have decreed otherwise. Here they come!

Any other reasonable actions you would like to take during the morning are acceptable, such are something with the oil and rope, though remember that you are in a wooden fort.

Male Human Student 1

You are wise to have Dassah watch with you...

Oleg wasn't suggesting using the oil, I just wanted you to know about it. Also, the house only has one story. They'll be on the ground level shooting through the window.

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

My Bar Exam results came in today. I passed! (164 raw score on MBE portion, so I have a little celebrating to do tonight. I apologize in advance if my typing becomes slurred, or if I fail to post more tonight.

Male Human Student 1

Congratulations. Three hurrahs. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Male Human Student 1

Wow! 0 and -2. They'll be flat-footed for two rounds. Too bad you aren't a rogue right now. ^_^.

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

Doh! 1 on stealth as requested!

Male Human Student 1

Hmm, perhaps jinxes are real.

Couple things. You only have two spells per day, unless I'm wrong, so after casting Mage Armor you can only grease one object. Also, the spell only has a range of 30ft, so the wagon's yoke is as far as you can cast.

You can switch your crossbow attack to casting grease, if you'd like. I'll do an initial write up of the round and if you disagree with anything, let me know and we can retcon it.

Male Human Student 1

Map as of end round one/beginning round two. I know nothing about editing pictures, so apologies for the poor editing. Brown blobs are horses. Bandits are black squares, Happs is on the ground near the lead horse, though not visible. Everyone else is labeled with a name. Oleg is the green square since his in melee.

Round two map.

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

It is all good, I passed all Eleanor's rolls yesterday until I added the stealth checks to cast Grease from Stealth. So I know it sometimes messes you up to add things you should have done, and forgot to do.

I am putting the eagle's attacks in the spoiler. I am just pretending like anything has a chance to hit, but you can use the rolls as you see fit.

Male Human Student 1

Regarding latest gameplay post. It reminds me of a conversation between two of my friends, both as their characters and themselves, during our first game together. After describing the goblin attack during Rise of the Runelords...

That's horrible! We have to help them! Is anyone hurt?

You're such a girl.

I am a girl!

Female Tiefling Summoner (Master Summoner) 1

Heh

Eleanor is a girl ;p

Male Human Student 1

Quick question, is Dassah small or medium? On the sheet you have her as medium, but you gave her a +1 size bonus to attack during gameplay.

You have about 200gp in store credit, the alchemist's fire, amulet, 20gp in coin, and a pack horse to go with the pony.

Female Halfling Master Summoner 2 | HP:14/14 AC:13 touch 13 flat footed 11 F: +2 R: +3 W: +3 Per:+2, Init:+2

I double checked herolab, she was supposed to be small (0 point evolution). I will update my character sheet as soon as I have more reliable internet than my phone, or leave her medium if you prefer.
