Too clean. The house looked too safe, too inviting. 'Just my paranoia,' he thought, trusting the pair. Slowly, he drew his sword and kept it low to his side as he did what he could to fade away into a residence across the way from the door that ought to be their exit if nothing went wrong. He was expecting an ambush with the house as bait, but he was also finding that he was becoming quite cynical as well.

Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23. Max is somewhat surprised to find a spell. "Wait - there is an alarm spell on this door. Is that your doing, Anevia? Or is someone else inside? Perhaps we should be on our guard."

Pytros walks in cautiously, ears and eyes open for anything out of place. If the demons have identified Anevia or Irabeth, it's possible that they might set up an ambush for them. The demons may be destructive and cruel, but they have a certain animalistic cunning that might result in an attack as thy try to claim the weapons. "Let's give it a moment," he whispers. "Alarm spells have two variants; the first sounds an audible alarm that we would be able to hear, and the second is a mental alert. I believe it has a one-mile range of effect. As we didn't hear the former, it is likely the latter - and the individual that cast the spell is within one mile."
Joao Marcos |
Outside, Joao readied a nearby piece of debris, and gave a slight nod to Pytros when he spotted him. Deliberately looking both ways from his position, he displayed the piece of debris that he would toss to alert the others if he saw something.

There was some conflict inside the house, but not enough for Joao to feel like he had to worry just yet. He was thinking that there was more to this than a single(?) person in the house. In this city, he was expecting traps within traps, so that was why he did not move from his place of concealment just yet.. He was expecting something else to rear its head.

I meant to post his appearance previously when he attacked, but I forgot.
The grizzled half-orc in ragged clothing snarls at you,

Sorry for the delay
The half-orc grunts in pain as the weapons cut into him, but he manages to get the potion into his mouth. As soon as this happens, he begins to lose cohesive shape. His form becomes blurry then translucent and hazy. Soon all that remains in the misty suggestion of his form.
He drank a potion of gaseous form. I don't think that anyone has a way of dealing with that, but I thought I'd as before I move us along. If I don't here back by Monday evening, I'll assume not and continue on.

Arwen slices through the vapour and it seems to deflate with a sigh. After a few moments the corpse of the orc re-solidifies before you.
The commotion over, Anevia steps into the house. Going over to the fallen sorcerer, she lets out a little gasp. "Well I'll be damned/ That Vavorg. Irabeth and I took him and his little gang of highway men down years ago. We turned him over to the local law. I guess that he must have avoided the gallows somehow. Could one of you throw him out into the street? I don't want him stinking up the place."
Going over to the fireplace, she uses a dagger to pry loose one of its stones. Behind it is a small cubby full of canvas wrapped bundles.
In all there are 12 longswords, 100 arrowheads and 2 dozen spearheads. All cold iron.
"All right boys. Let's get these back to the heart, double time."
The sorcerer has a magical ranseur DC20 to identify.
The trip back to the inn is without incident and at your return, the weapons are quickly divvied out. In your absence, a group of crusaders investigated one of the cult hideouts (Topaz Solutions) finding it mostly abondonned except for a couple of cunning traps and another group of soldiers were savaged trying to eliminate the fiendish troll.
You may rest, check out the remaining cultist safehouse or go after the troll.

Joao left his place of concealment as the group left, and said nothing on the way back, though he was definitely taking in the change to the city as they returned. The new weapon garnered a raised eyebrow, but a quick look at everyone else said that there were no significant injuries to worry about. Once they arrived back at the headquarters, he took some time to talk with the crusaders that investigated Topaz Solutions, figuring that the others were going to take a short bit of time before heading back out again.
Maximillian Akorius |
"This ranseur is powerful, aiding in attacking, defense, and disarming." Max offers the weapon to whomever might wish to take it.
"We must deal with this troll next - but we must do so prepared. I will prepare an acid incantation, if we can spend some time to rest and recover."
Max would like to learn alarm and resist energy from the spellbook that was recently recovered. Does he have to recopy the spells to his own spellbook, or just use it directly from the one that's recovered? Can he take 10 on spellcraft checks to learn the spells?
GM Fanguar |
Resting is fine. There are healers that can top you up if you need it.
@Max: let me know if there are any changes to you memorized spell list.
I'll assume you are going for the troll, unless I hear otherwise and I'll have a bigger update tomorrow.

You find an out of the way corner of the inn to catch some shut eye, safe in the knowledge that your comrades in arms will keep you safe. After a few hours of need rest, you manage to scrounge a hot meal and regroup in the courtyard. Even in the few brief hours that you've missed, much has changed. The crusaders forays have continuously been bring back survivors and the whole area is becoming less a military base and more of a refugee camp.
Those crusaders that you catch sight of amognst the despondent crowds look battered, bloody, and grim. You see a ripple move through the milling masses and it opens up to reveal Irabeth, with Anevia in tow. They both look exhausted. Irabeth gives you a little nod of greeting before diving right in, "While you were out, I sent a few of the Eagle Watch to investigate that tower for cultist activity. Our boys managed to catch them with their pants down, but the guy running the place was some kind of chemist. They mauled our guys pretty good before they were put down, but the casualties were worth it. There was a number of papers and maps laying out cultist positions and movements and we've been able to set up a couple of successful ambushes. The head guy also had this letter on him and it sounds like something more is going on."
She hands you a yellowed piece of parchment,
Faxon,
You did well to report your superior’s mishandlingof funds, and I trust that you will continue to serve as loyally in the weeks to come. You need not command the Kenabres Templars for long, for the city is about to die—I only wish I could be there to take part in its murder, for I have fond memories of my Red Morning Massacre. No matter, I suppose, for your mortal kin will all fall soon enough—as I said, Kenabres’s days are short. Vorlesh has already left to meet with our Lord’s daughter in the Abyss to secure a Nahyndrian crystal of the proper purity, and once she has what she needs, she’ ll arrive in Kenabres to finish the job and turn the wardstones fully to our use. You will know when she succeeds, I suspect! Praise Lord Baphomet!
Minagho
"Im not sure what it is all about, but we've got some people working on it. Anyways, we have bigger problems at the moment and it has claws and teeth and it's cutting us to pieces. There is this huge, horned troll that has been ravaging the mercantile district. I don't know how many civilians it has eaten, but it's responsible for the loss of at least 3 patrols that I know about. The last expedition the went out to put it down was torn to shreds. We need to get access to the goods in those shops, so I'm putting together a team to take it out. I was hoping that I could count on you to help."
Safe to assume you say yes
She nods gratefully. "The beastie has set up its lair in a warehouse and I hope to hit it where it lives. Gear up. We leave in an hour."
Maximillian Akorius |
Max memorizes acid splash.
"They truly mean to corrupt the wardstone? Such an act would surely take a creature or artifact of immense power. What could they be up to?"
Knowledge check to know more?
"In any event, we are indeed here to face the fiendish troll. Is it alone, or are there others with it?"
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Fanguar |
@Max:Nope. Destruction of a wardstone would have been thought impossible, corruption even more so.
"I would seem so. Thank the Inheritor that you found those documents revealing the locations of the cultist safe houses or we would have no idea of their plan. We have our best minds pouring over the documents and hopefully they can figure something out soon.
As for the beast, it had several cultists and lesser fiends at its command, but we have been able to ambush them when they were sent out to capture prisoners. Our best intel is that it is alone at the moment, but who knows when it might link up with some other element in the city."
Joao Marcos |
The rest that they took was helpful, in that besides getting some rest, it allowed him to think of several things that he would have to check up on in the camp. In this case, some of the time that the others were resting, he spent looking for any of the camp's enchanters. He was aware that there were things that could be done with the essence of things-- or so said some of the more interesting stories that he had heard.
In this instance, he went to find whoever passed for the camp's enchanters to ask them a few questions. He figured that they would be going after the troll next, since it was the next greatest threat and it had cost some lives. Provided he could find any, he posed the following questions of them:
"Would you be capable and willing to use parts of creatures and demons in order to craft your enchantments?", and if the response was positive, "I expect we will be assigned to remove the fiendish troll that has been plaguing the city. Would any parts of it be useful?" He was aware that it was possibly just hearsay, but no avenue was worth dismissing.

A bit disjointed in the sense of the timeframe, but all of them haven't gathered yet, I presume, and I was wondering if you were inclined to use the "Special Materials" rule. The troll might be able to serve some purpose for the crusaders besides "Obstacle"
Aglamore |
Brother Aglamore is silent, as though speech had fled his body. He reads the yellowed note again and again, his hands shaking, whether with fear or rage it is difficult to say.
At last he whispers "Minagho..." as if the word itself were painful. "Fate is inexorable," he adds. Then, standing taller, he goes to sharpen his spear and pray to Iomedae.
Aglamore is ready. Though someone should probably think of alchemical fire and alchemical acid!
Those of you around from the start will recall that we created these characters before the first volume of Wrath of the Righteous was released. I based my character's background on a brief passage in the Worldwound book. Looks like one of the characters I chose to be involved with (and probably the other too, I'm guessing) are part of this AP. Keen!
Pytros Ex-Lucarus |
Pytros sleeps as a soldier does - in quick bursts, seemingly at any place of his choosing. Long used to the fatigue during deployments, he is awake before the dawn breaks on the new day. He spent some time conferring with Irabeth during the evening, offering his tactical expertise in the defense of the refugee camp. He also helps triage new arrivals for injuries and helps debrief them to get a better idea of what parts of the city are salvageable.
As Irabeth explains the discovery of the note, he feels a chill of recognition. This is the precise thing that he had come to the Worldwound to investigate and prevent. "As you may be able to tell from my accent," he explains, "I was born in Hermea. I was bred to be a soldier, to lead my people in war. It was in this role that I discovered a terrible secret. My squad destroyed an unauthorized ship attempting to gain access to our shores. In its ruin, I found a book that explained how to corrupt the Wardstones and how to use that corrupted power to mutate humanity to better suit demonic aims. I brought this information to the Council of Enlightenment, but I believe that one or more of their number have been corrupted. They sent a tiefling assassin to kill me. He killed my mentor, yet I escaped. I made my way here in an attempt to warn the leadership, but it appears that I was too late..."
Pytros stops for a minute, letting his explanation sink in. "It seems that the cultists are capable of infiltrating our societies at the highest level. They are a cancer that must die whenever discovered. The more pressing matter is this troll and control of the merchants' shops. We will require an ample supply of both fire and acid to put it down, and intelligent tactics. Trolls are rash and stupid, but incredibly dangerous."
