The Battle of Thorn River will result in much celebration and adulation once everything it under control, and the tale is told.

Most of the bandits are dead, only 3 remain and they are no threat under the effects of a spell.

Sheoll your bloodrager is down, Rowena is seriously injured.

Leaving Tassira and Alexander to determine what they need to do.....

Tassira lowers her crossbow, her heart still racing. She looks all around the battlefield, her hands trembling at the sight of all the bodies.

"Alex." She points out the three bandits still in the grip of her sleep spell. "Help me tie those three up. Rowena." She turns to the priestess and pales slightly at the sight of her wounds. "Go help Sheoll. And get yourself healed."

She starts moving toward the sleeping bandits.

Seeing that all the nearby combatants appear to be down Alexander steps in to help Tassira as she asked. He begins to Bind the bandits that had succumb to the sleep spell. While doing his work the looks to Rowena and calls out to her an expression of worry on his face. Are you ok Row?

Clutching at her rent side with one hand, blood flowing across fingers, the young priestess looked toward the fallen warrior and half-listened to the noble sorceress' command. She knew her duty well enough and merely nodded her acquiescence.

Rowena walked as well as she could manage toward Sheoll. With her free hand she reached for her silver holy symbol and sought the divine aid of Old Deadeye as she worked to heal them both of their injury, ensuring none of their enemy received the divine succour.

(Ro has selective channelling so can exclude up to 3 bandits from the channel area, but includes herself and Sheoll in the channel.)

She felt the curative wave tenderly brush her form and her open wound began to knit and seal itself whole and clean and the pain subsided. The young priestess drew relieved breath upon the healing and gave thanks to her god. Rowena waited and observed Sheoll's condition before administering any further magical healing to the warrior.

Her eyes sought Alexander's across the distance and she nodded, her voice quiet, "I am better, now, by Erastil's grace. Thank you, Alex."

Channel Energy used 2 out of 5 times this day.

Ro back up to full hp. Sheoll, you currently have restored 8 hp. Not sure what your hp was previously, as your status bar still shows 2 hp.

Sheoll's body twitches slightly as the gaping wounds in his chest knit over, thanks to Rowena's godly devotion. It seems his condition had indeed been dire, as even after the priestess's assistance, the warrior continues to lay still, unconscious.

Kressel's last attack had Sheoll at -11, so that'll put him to -3. Mostly out of the woods, but still out for now I think. I don't recall if there's a roll to wake up or I have to wait till I'm in the positives again...also, thanks Ro. :)

Okay, that should bring Sheoll up to 8/11. Sorry can't do more at this time, Sheoll. That's the end of Ro's channels for the day. Hope we don't need more healing tonight. :/

"That is all I can give this day, Sheoll. You fought bravely against the female bandit. Can you stand?"

Looking at the dead bandit nearest Sheoll, the young priestess vocalised her thoughts, "I wonder if this is the leader of which we have heard of, Kressel? We should search her."

It was evening when we arrived at the bandit's camp, yes?

As three more waves of healing energy wash over Sheoll's body, his wounds diminish more and more, until they are nearly gone. Seconds later, the warrior stirs, then in a start, his body jerks and he scrambles backwards, somewhat unaware of his surroundings. It takes a moment, but looking around at the fallen enemies, and his his companions still standing, he centers himself.
Humbled, he stands with a frown, brushing off some leaves and dirt, his own blood (and some of his foe) still fresh on him. His face changes to one of relief as Rowena's reassuring words reach his ears.

"You truly are a blessing Rowena. You have my thanks."

He turns to look at his fallen opponent, a scowl on his face.

"She was a fierce warrior, but it seems , like me, she lacked some common sense, knowing when to surrender."
Reflecting on the fight, he shakes his head. Foolish indeed. Need to keep a clearer head.
"And more, she did not have the strong companionship that we have built over these few days. he says to the group, looking at them with a smirk.

Leaning over to pick up his fallen sword, and retrieve his ax, he looks about the landscape, and nods. The stars have indeed lead me to a good group of folk.

Giving Ro a smile and nod seeing that she is whole again he turns back to his task. It takes only moments to finish securing the final bandit but when Alexander turns his attention back to Ro he is relieved to find Sheoll standing again. Praise Erastil, I feared you had met your end Sheoll it is good to see that you are standing again. As much bluster as I offered our enemies I wasn't certain of our success when I realized the number of bandits arrayed against us and when you fell.... Well I am just glad to see you are whole.

Hearing his cousin Alexander turns to hear her words. I would wish to offer these men a choice but honestly I believe they have already made it. I demanded surrender several times during the fight even a chance to withdraw and was answered only with aggression. Alexander pauses a moment before continuing. Hans, Kir, and Gernon all surrendered pretty easily even the two others on watch away from the main camp where swayed pretty easily. I think Kressel may have placed the more hardened criminals in the this camp to offer the best defense against a attack.

"Or perhaps we leave them, securely tied out here, to meet their fate with Tuskgutter."

Rowena's quiet voice filled the space. There was no jest in her eyes or general countenance.

She walked over to the dead Kressel and bent down by the female leader and searched her person for anything significant.

Tassira blinks, clearly surprised by Rowena's suggestion.

She doesn't say anything in reply, but from the way she shakily walks into the remains of the bandits' camp, it's fairly safe to say that she took that suggestion harder than she'd like.

"Might as well see if there's anything valuable in their camp."

As if on cue the three remaining bandits awaken and find them selves trused up tightly with rope.....

Alex put the bandits in a basic hogtie with out securing them to anything with the ropes he was carrying from earlier. He was mainly concentrating on making it quick and secure worrying about moving them somewhere once the situation was under the groups control. He wasn't worrying so much about gagging them at this point and didn't have the materials ready for it any way.

That sounds like a good idea Tassira I will keep an eye on these three. We should consolidate our group soon though. I don't want to leave Hans and Gernon alone too long they seemed as spooked about Tuskgutter as the rest of the bandits. before Tass can get too far he calls out to her. You did good. Your brothers would be proud. Alex gives her a lopsided smile. Maybe even a little surprised.

Already he was shaking off the near defeat...and death he had avoided with the invaluable assistance of his new comrades.

Tassira winces at Alex's well-meaning compliment. She looks down at the dirt, biting her lip and trying to get herself under control.

Tassira pauses as Sheoll speaks. Rowena's suggestion of leaving the bandits to 'Tuskgutter', while it had some merit, could just as easily backfire. And the thought of just abandoning them to die doesn't sit too well with me.

Steeling herself, she approaches the bandits and stands behind Sheoll, waiting to see their reactions.

Rowena took the cure light potion she found on Kressel and handed it over to Sheoll. "If you require this, then drink and it should restore you to full health."

The rest of Kressel's items she collected and brought over to the pile with the other, discovered gear and items.

Rowena had heard Alexander's compliment of Tassira, but did not remark upon it for it was not intended for her ears.

She took a position to side of Sheoll and looked upon the tied bandits, saying no more for there were others more skilled at such tactic. Her clothing was torn where the enemy had slashed her with the sword. She would have to mend her attire for modesty's sake ... she contemplated as she stood in silence, her expression neutral. Alexander had the right of it earlier -- the brigands had been given the chance to peacefully surrender but they had attacked with vigour and murderous intent. Sweet words would not change their hearts. Maybe fear would.

Seeing as everyone has completed the search of the area and the goods had been compiled Alexander felt it was time to bring up the other prisoners again. The young priestess walked over to the nobleman and then began moving back toward the cart and the ones waiting for them there.

”Deep in the stolen lands on the bank of the Tuskwater lake framed by two rivers on each side sits the Staglord’s fortress. The fortress sits upon a small hillock, a narrow path of hard-packed earth winds up the hillside approaching the fort, the path is 30 feet wide, 300 feet long, and provides no cover. The remaining hillside surrounding the fort is a swath of hill devoid of shrubbery, save for isolated thorny vines, but some large boulders break up the smooth landscape. The hillside is haunted according to the bandits chatter over the evening fires, but I have no way of knowing what haunt is or is not there.”

Sheoll frowned at the man's bravado. He had hoped (did he?) that these men would see reason. But as it had been pointed out before, they had been given their chance. It seemed there was not much for it.

Turning to his group, he beckoned them and took several steps back from the prisoners.
"I have a feeling there's no repentance here. These may be the worst of the lot, and if their words or true...we have even more to consider. I say we get whatever else about this "staglord" from them, and then put them to the rope."

Alexander was content to allow the others to perform the interrogation trusting in their good judgement as he led the way back towards the groups horses, cart and supplies. As they moved away from the bandit camp Alex was tense with uncertainty. Once they where about half way to the to there destination. Alex stopped and tentatively reached out to Rowena. Rowena I can't tell you how happy I am that you are all right. With Cadell's passing and with how near to death Sheoll and you came. It makes me realize how fleeting it all can be. I had wished to wait and ask to court you properly when we where done with the exploration but everything that has happened and now knowing what we are facing the thought of not ever having a chance to at least share my feelings seems unthinkable. Even if the time and place are not ideal I wanted you to know how much I am coming to care for you Ro.

Speaking with Alex, discreetly:

Rowena stopped walking and felt Alexander's hand on her arm.

She stood, silent, her eyes a shade greener than normal. Her emotions moved like a moth between the light and dark.

"Are you not promised to Tassira? I know you are distant relations, yet you do all in your power to protect her that I had become almost certain she was intended for your wife."

Her words were low and steady, belying the level of turmoil moving within her.

"I call Tassira my friend and would wish no harm to befall her. Yet, as I stood with my crossbow, covering you both from attack, you moved from me to protect your cousin thus leaving me vulnerable. What if I had fallen? You declare you grow feelings for me, but what if I had fallen from the strike? Who would have healed the party, then? You would allow your healer to fall in battle to save your own blood relation." A look of incredulity crossed her face and her small hands clenched by her side before relaxing again. Perhaps she just did not understand how strong their blood ties were, having had no real family connection of her own to learn from.

"If I permit a man to court me, then I would expect that he would be loyal and steadfast, protect me as I would him. Will I always come second to Tassira in this exploration and beyond? I do not ask to come first, but I do ask where your true loyalties lie, Alexander. I do care for you, profoundly, and I believe it has been more than apparent. You allowed me to be struck and I cannot pretend that you believed a priestess was any more a fighter than a sorceress."

Her voice trailed to mere whisper and there was pain in her eyes but she held her head tall and attempted a calm she did not feel.

"I do not mean to speak to you sharply like a fishwife. That you care for me has been earnestly noted. But how you would care for me, is my concern. If I love someone, I would want to love them until the end of my days."

Sorry, typing this on the train on the way to a work appt.

She looks around for Alex & Rowena, slightly confused (and even more worried) by how long they've been gone. Did something happen to them? By the Green, I hope not...

"ALEX! ROWENA!" She calls out, hoping to get their attention. This is a matter that she feels everyone needs to provide input on.

I'm assuming it doesn't take much for Rowena and Alex to retrieve Hans, Gernon and the other prisoners with the cart, so I'm going to move to that...

Ignoring the bandit's question for the moment, Sheoll makes a second look at the captives, taking his time to make sure they're securely bound. He doesn't doubt Alex's skill, but he's wary of these brigands, having traveled with people like them for some time.
After the prisoners are secured to his satisfaction, he gestures for the group to gather away from other ears.

"We can't take them all back. I don't think these are going to honestly repent, and I don't think we can wait to use magic on them."
He looks at Rowena a bit apologetically.
"As distasteful as it may be, I think we need to put these men down. I believe the rope or sword is the customary way in this land, but I'm not as familiar with the laws as some of you may be."
Crossing his arms.
"In any case, this is not a decision to be made by only one. However we decide to go, I'll support... but I don't think we can let these men live."

Tassira folds her arms as Sheoll makes his opinion known. "Assuming that Kressel kept the most hardened of bandits for camp guards, I have to say I'm understanding of your opinion, Sheoll. I'm concerned that they're only saying what they think we want to hear just so they'll have a chance to escape and warn their 'stag lord' of our interference."

The fact that she's discussing executing the remaining bandits in such a detached, pragmatic manner gives her chills on the inside. She takes a breath and tries to keep as clear a head as she can about this, despite her discomfort.

Talking to Rowena:
Alexander appears pained by the turn of the conversation Tassira and I are not betrothed. Though I can not deny I dot on her. She is skilled in her craft but I fear that she is out of her depth here. I am trying to bolster her confidence maybe the ties of family has colored my perceptions more then I care to admit though.

Alexander heaves a sigh But in the moment of battle I made a decision based on the circumstances and my trust in you. I chose to turn and face Tassira's attackers because she doesn't have any protection in a melee not even the light armor your wearing between the two of you I thought that she was the most vulnerable at the time. I trusted in your ability to handle the situation for those few moments.

Pinching the bridge of his nose Alexander eyes gazed at the ground not wishing to face Rowena's hurt expression. I wasn't able to protect you this time I can only apologies for that and let my actions speak for me in the coming days.

Once done with the conversation Alexander with Rowenas help gathered the remaining prisoners along with the gear and directed Hans and Gernon to the main bandit camp. Once there Alexander try's to find out what if anything they had missed with the talk with the bandit before weighing in on the bandits punishment.

private talk with Alexander:

Rowena weighed all of Alexander's words and intentions. She could not fault him for protecting his cousin -- it was honourable -- yet there were others to consider and protect, too, and she had wished to make him aware of this. He acknowledged his doting conduct and comforted her mind that there was no formal betrothal between them and that Alexander was free to speak of his feelings for her-Rowena.

The young priestess took a deep breath and let it flow quietly outward. She shook off the feeling of hurt as best as she could manage as they still had work to do.

"I will give you the opportunity to show me in the coming days, Alexander. I care for you, too." She reached out a hand and gently touched his arm, for the nobleman could not look her in the eye. She was open to being courted by Alexander Medvyed, yet she wanted to be surer of him first. That he was indeed worthy of her affection and love. So perhaps they would take this courtship slow at first ... and see where it led them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

They worked well, side by side, moving the earlier captured bandits and the reformed bandits with the cart back to the main camp.

She had heard Tassira's call, looked to Alexnader, and picked up her pace.

Rowena overheard some of the talk between Sheoll and Tassira. She stayed by Alexander's side and looked upon the three in bonds before her.

Sense Motive on tied up brigands: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 (Honestly, what's up with these low rolls in the KM game...)

She could not discern their natural motives at the present time, but they had shown their true colours when they attempted to kill them under Kressel's orders.

Looking to Sheoll and Tassira, she responded in lowered voice,

"I believe you are both correct and they will not repent honestly and will run to this Stag lord as soon as they are released. I say they should be punished for their crimes - hung by the neck until they are dead."

Tassira listens to Rowena's & Alex's opinions, noting that they both appear to be more stressed now than before they left to fetch the others. I think I need to ask them how they're doing when I have a chance. This was a trying day for all of us.

"I'm not sure we have time to hang them. Let's just take their heads and be done with it--they have supplies here that we should retrieve for Oleg, and we're losing daylight." She whispers as she turns to the bound bandits. She feels the bottom dropping out of her stomach. Now I have to pass sentence... can't say this is how I expected this venture to go.

"We've come to a decision."

Rowena's green-eyed gaze turned to Tassira.

"I find no issue with using the blade. Sheoll? turning to the warrior, You have the might and fortitude to bear the blade true and strike off their heads. Please undertake the execution. Tassira may pronounce judgement."

There was also the body of the nobleman, Cadell, wrapped in the cart and awaiting burial.

Tass, I thought it had already turned dark? I may have been mistaken due to Aneirin's previous description that the tree canopy was so dense it was blocking out the sun and the only illumination to the area came from a decent-sized fire.

Well, as far as I know, we're losing daylight.

Tassira squares her shoulders and eyes the bound bandits once more. Her grey eyes take on a hardened edge.

"You were granted several chances to surrender as you clashed with us. Every offer we made was rebuffed at the point of a sword or by the edge of an axe. Your intentions were made clear to us when you chose to continue fighting, even when it was clear that there was no future for you down that path. Therefore, by the power bestowed upon us by the Swordlords of Restov & the Nation of Brevoy, for your unrepentant crimes of banditry & murder, we hereby sentence you to death." The pronunciation of the sentence is clear, cold and harsh.

DC 20 Sense Motive:
Despite her cold exterior, you can tell that she feels that she's died a little on the inside.

She turns to Sheoll and gives him a nod. Get it over with. Please.

This was a lot harder to write than I thought it would be.

Sheoll took one more look at the group before nodding.

"Very well."

With that, he walked over to the first of the bandits.

Gripping him firmly by the ties, he dragged the man towards a nearby fallen log, and pushed him flat onto his chest over the dead wood. Taking a few steps around, he drew his greatsword from his back. Lifting it high, he looked back at the group. He grit his teeth, and his palms began to sweat slightly in the evening air. DO IT! screamed the voice in his head.

Almost with a sigh of relief, he brought the weapon down hard on the man's neck, biting back a scream of...joy?..that came out more like a quick, low grunt.

He repeated the motions. Grabbing one of the captives, dragging them to the stump, and bringing steel to neck until the job was done. With each heavy cut he tensed more, and he felt a warm ease moving from behind his eyes, across his face and down his arms. The voice quieted some with each death, and soon it was merely a soft hum...almost comforting.

Tassira winces and looks away when Sheoll executes the first bandit.

The second one she makes more of an effort to watch, but she still turns away in discomfort.

She keeps her eyes on the third one and forces herself to watch. It's safe to say she immediately regrets it.

She says nothing, but her whole body is trembling.

And so ends the battle of the Thorn River Camp....not with a bang, but with a whimper....

It is late, as you recall this camp offers several opportunities for a place to camp.

Where will you camp?
What is your watch order?

Rowena stood steadfast and silent beside Alexander as Tassira stoically pronounced the sentence and Sheoll undertook the grim but swift task of executing each bandit. Even though they were not repentant for their crimes, she spoke a short prayer over the brigands remains and turned to the others. "We cannot leave the bodies and heads like this for fear of attracting carrion, the boar or undue attention. Either we burn them or inter them ... but we must decide and undertake the task as quickly as possible. We have other matters to attend to this day -- and there is still Cadell to bury." Her body was reacting to the day's events but with force of will, she pushed down every feeling in order to do her duty as effectively as she could given the circumstances.

Looking up at the ever darkening sky, Sheoll lingers a moment, trying to catch sight of any stars. He wonders a bit what his mother would tell him about the Star Sister.

"Rowena is right. The bodies should be disposed of, and we should probably make camp for the night. We don't yet know these lands as well as we like, and probably shouldn't risk and extended journey through the night. They seemed to already have a firepit, so I suggest we make use of it."

"I'll begin preparing a spot for Cadell."

If noone objects...:
Sheoll then uses one of the handaxes to begin loosening up the dirt near the stream. He knew it was more common for folk to be buried in his land, where his people left the husk open to the sky so that the spirit may reach the stars unhindered. But Cadell was not of his people...so he would respect that.
Working as long as it takes, he begins to digs a hole several feet deep with hand and axe in which to inter the remains of the rogue.

Sheoll is gifted with excellent night(Dark)vision, so he'll volunteer to take the shift where the night is at its darkest.

Tassira releases a breath she didn't realize she was holding and nods. "Right. We'll get to work on burying Cadell first. Once we're done, Alex, Sheoll, could you please deal with the bandit corpses? And Ro, would you please help me set up camp here?"

She turns and starts to walk over to the wagon, where Cadell's body waits.

EDIT: Ninja'ed. Dangit.

Alex was silent through most of the process. When the question of Cadell's internment comes up Alexander volunteers to help Sheoll in the work. Here Shoell let me help. I think our next purchase should be a shovel. Alex says as he moves dirt with the bowl of his mess kit.

As Tassira directs the setting up of the camp Alex pipes up as he digs. We should use the blinds they set up to our advantage. If we place the camp near one the person on watch will have a good view of everything.

Tassira nods at Alex's suggestion as she sets her bedroll down within walking distance of one of the blinds.

When Rowena has a free moment, she approaches her to offer aid in setting up camp. "How are you holding up, Ro?" She asks, her weariness mixing with the concern in her voice.

With the grave being prepared for Cadell and the continued silence from Alexander, Rowena moved to assist in the set up of the camp with Tassira. Her thoughts were many as she worked - lifting and placing the items and gear they had collected from the bandits into the cart.

What's happening with the other 4 bandits: Hans and Gernon (repented back at Oleg's) and Ulric and Jon who we captured after Cadell was killed...?

Upon Alexander's instruction to his cousin, Rowena followed Tassira and set the camp near one of the blinds (Sorry, I can't see anywhere in Aneirin's past posts about these blinds and where they're situated - can someone point the post out to me, please? Or is this in regard to the platforms mentioned by Kenderkin?)

At Tassira quiet question as to her state, Rowena turned her head to look across at the sorceress and answered in low voice, "I am well enough, Tassira. Thank you. How do you fare?"

After the abrupt conversation with Alexander on the path to the cart, Rowena felt more perplexed than before ... for the nobleman had stopped talking to her and the matter had not been properly resolved. Rowena shook her head and then caught herself and stopped. The young priestess continued speaking in a low voice.

"You did well, today. We all did. We have lost Cadell - and his family will need to be informed. Will you write the letter when we return to Oleg's, Tassira, or would you like me to undertake the grave task?"

The night passes fairly uneventfully Sheoll saw either a possum or armadillo rooting for grubs in the night.

I assume you are headed back to Oleg's with all the stuff, but I wanted to confirm.
