I think its starting to show a little that Leralt is feeling the pressure of curing this disease. Dispite having to yet show any signs of it himself.
Btw Gellius brought up a good point, best not use any disease removing items or magic unless we are sure we wont get reinfected.
Leralt Littlehorn |
So whats everyone's take on the deva?
OOC and IC thanks to a good roll we know that angel is way to strong to deal with. Don't want to realese it unless we get attacked by a bunch of clearly evil enemies. Otherwise I say leave it bound.
P.S. Why does Leralt end up talking so much, he is supposed to be a bookworm. xP
Dr. Catila Eyesquint |
Great Question! : P (Please don't feel the need to let him do so much of it! )
But actually it brings up an issue I wanted to address. It seems Leralt and OMB are on similar timetables. So OMB, I ask that you give others a chance to engage in conversation with NPCs before allowing one PC to have an entire conversation without anyone else being able to get a word in edgewise (simply due to differences in posting times). It's a little frustrating.
Regarding your question Leralt, I think you simply don't have enough information yet. You seem to be jumping to a lot of conclusions there. And also remember, while you may have had a previous bad experience with an undead angel, Leralt hasn't had one (at least to my knowledge) so he should have no reason to be automatically suspicious here. You know what I mean?
Leralt Littlehorn |
Dont worry I dont let that stuff cross over, it just brings the memory up. Leralt is making choices on the facts at hand, along with his own little tricks (has no diplomacy skills so he relies on reason and mind games). He does not think the angel is evil, unstable and stubborn yes but not evil at the moment. Really he does not want to let him out for any reason. He is aware how strong it is and on top of that it has become an undead creature, which could very well have unknown effects. Good or bad he is something the party could not deal with and may even become an issue for the allies they are courting. The Pale Guardians would see it as a threat and the People would never accept something so unnatural.
In his mind its best to keep him bound for now. If he happens to become helpful thats great, but until he can be handled by the party or at least dismissed back to his homeplane. Its a risk he does not want to take at the moment.
Thats the way Leralt feels. But Catila feel free to step in and take over, kinda like how she reins people in (mainly Leralt). ;P
P.S. I almost always make a post once the DM does but I have no problem waiting for others. Just want to get my input in, which is why I am sure its a bit frustrating for you.
Edit-You know I just looked up Movanic Deva, they have constent detect evil and discern lies. Why is trusting us an issue. xD
Lena Relani |
As for the Deva I think leaving it bound for now is the best idea but talking to it won't hurt, if we can convince it of our good intentions it would likely aid us or at least inform us some.
With posting schedules I agree with Catila, I'm in the UK so most of my posting is when you guys are sleeping or on weekends. Having a little more time to catch up on NPC interactions would be good (hopefully not slowing the game down too much though)
Songan |
I was in the UK ten years ago on a foreign study trip. Spent five weeks in London. It was fun!
I try to post during the day if I can, but lately schoolwork has been kickin' my butt and grading papers and whatnot so I haven't been able to get on to answer until I get home. Which has also been later than usual the last few days because I've been helping students in my TSA group get ready for our first competitive events conference of the year. Busy busy!
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Rest assured that a single PC's interactions do not determine the NPC's mindset. That said, I'll try to allow more time for everyone to respond before the NPCs talk back. Any other suggestions? I'm open to any criticism/suggestions/ideas that you might have.
Leralt Littlehorn |
Do we have any input in rebuilding?
If so what can we do or have done?
Any timetable or rules to it?
I just figure if we are basically starting over in building the settlement then we may as well do it right. Maybe get some help from our burrowing friend to do some tunnel work. ;)
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
You do have input. The crafts people are planning out a new craftshall and dorms, but other than that, you're welcome to give input.
Leralt Littlehorn |
Well I am thinking improvements to defenses. At least one watchtower/barracks. Depending on what the craftshall has their wont be need for other crafting buildings and the dorms can also be used as a messhall. A pen for any allowable animals to be held, we should capture some of those pigs sooner or later. Also some underground storm shelters until we can upgrade the settlement to stone. They could serve as cellers and food reserves as well.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Leralt Littlehorn |
I am taking into account what we have to work with. I dont think we have craftsmen who are masterful enough to make round wooden buildings or at least not very quickly. I would rather we have the barebones up as quick as we can get them.
Ideally I would like to turn the settlement into something more fortress style. Stone walls, stone buildings, and pubble roads to a dock as well as outlying farmlands. Make it something that can stand up to attacks and natural disasters. But thats a good way off.
If we get our treaty with the People we could maybe get some aid, or at least one of them can help us get resources as I doubt we can cut down any tree's or mine anything without consulting them.
Anyways good luck Catila dont die. xP

I hope you don't mind me asking this question as a player, James, but I'm simply curious: How much of what happens do you have planned? Like, do you a vague idea of what is going to happen or do you have a ton of things planned out very precisely?
I ask because my first experience as a GM was in a game that was almost completely ad-lib...and not by choice! I was running a Heroes Unlimited (Palladium system) game with some friends of mine. The setup for the game was that they were a team that had been called in to handle an escalating gang war which, unbeknownst to them, was being instigated by a mad scientist sending a super-advanced android into gang territory disguised as the opposite gang to slice-n-dice some of them, attempting to instigate a gang war so that the increased criminal activity would mask the things he was doing to further his own agenda. The PCs went completely off the map in the first five minutes of the game and I ad-libbed the entire three-hour adventure.
Exposition: I expected the heroes to go in, thump some heads, find out what's instigating it, stop the gang war, find the clues to lead them to the mad scientist, right? But nooooo...the leader of the group, a super-strength guy named Professor Payne, decided that they were going to find out what was going on by INFILTRATING one of the gangs. So he disguises himself as a pimp, gets the group females to agree to dress up like his "girls," waltzes into the gang headquarters and somehow manages to convince them that he's from back east and is there to start his own business and wants to get in on the winning side, obviously.
Also, did I forget to mention that this hero was played by a youth pastor? Oy.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The way I usually do non-prepackaged games, and especially in this one, is to create a basic sandbox, ie the island, and start with a scenario to open the game, namely the Archcanon's briefing. From there, I generally nudge the PCs into action and see how they handle the situation. At that point, it becomes a mix of me thinking "Wouldn't it be cool if..." and seeing what the players are interested in pursuing.
In the case of this, once the weird stuff started being a feature the players were interested in, I started building the framework of a plot, which is filled in as time goes on. Then I start weaving in different ideas and plots as B and C side plots, while the A plot is in downtime.
It's messy, but I find that it works good for me and the players generally seem to enjoy it, since so much of it relies on the actions they take.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Leralt, I did, but then got distracted by a shiny object and forgot to respond. Sorry...
I think it's fine if you want to change your character and I'll see what I can do about arranging for appropriate story-based prompting.
Leralt Littlehorn |
It seems like the items we found were forgotten. So going to list them and anybody that took them. Like to clear this up before anyone adds anything to their sheet. Leaving out tomes, labs and such sense they are not really carry around items. Also leaving out those that belong to our weasel friend, sense you got to trade for them (+1 frost cold iron short sword and gems from the ruins).
Missing Hammer
Headband of vast intelligence +2 (Leralt)
Daemon Trap (Leralt)
50 assorted coins of silver, gold and platinum (need to find out how much of each)
Flying Ointment
Wand of cure light wounds, 12 charges (arcane or divine?)
Crystal of healing hands
Mulberry pentacle ioun stone (+5 to bluff and diplomacy) (Lena?)
4 potions of remove disease
Restorative Ointment
Folding Boat
Animated mortar and pestle (adds +5 competence bonus to alchemy checks) (Gellius)
Dr. Catila Eyesquint |
Well, Leral did make it Very clear, several times, about how he felt about freeing the angel. And, you know, she is a Detective at all. ; )
But sure, here's the roll. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
What's his Bluff?
Nothing there that Catila particularly needs, plus she already got the + to CHR thingie. (Flying ointment would be cool though!)
Did I miss the post where Surrek said which items were his?
Thiking the ioun stone should go to whoever has the best bluff and dip. Songan? (seeing as he's pretty much our party 'face' anyway)
Oh and hey, do we get to keep Orin's wooden sword?
Leralt Littlehorn |
I cant speak for Orin or his gear, so ask the DM. As for whats Surrek its in my post above at the end in () that along with the bits of shiny stone chips and the custom item (animal messenger 3/day and alter self 1/day also radiates a sanctuary effect continuously) are his.
I guess everything that is not needed by someone in the party will be considered party loot. Need to craft a bag of holding when I have time for the party, need to collect 1250 gp too.
Leralt has no intention of helping free the angel at the moment. (thats all you get, your not a mind reader ;P)
Edit-Nvm it needs a 5th lvl spell, I cant craft it yet. x[
Phillip0614 |
To add to that, Leralt, let's not forget the items given us in the very beginning. Two sets of muleback cords, a campfire bead, glowing glove, and silver raven. I know those are more exploration-based items, but we haven't really made much use of them to this point.
Also, if y'all don't mind Songan taking the ioun stone, I'm willing to take it. Question, though: Since the catman's diplo/bluff come from Versatile Performance as opposed to actual ranks, would the ioun stone bonus stack with it?
Leralt Littlehorn |
I did not forget about those items but Leralt only has the silver raven and its been on my sheet sense he got it. Just had no use for it yet. The other items were claimed by other people so are not my concern.
I cant keep track of everyone, hard enough keeping track of Leralt. ;P
Dr. Catila Eyesquint |
At Catila's suggestion that they find a peaceable solution to this encounter, and Songan's agreement, the doctor looks at the two of them as if they'd just sprouted new limbs out of their foreheads. He shakes his head and moves out of the doorway moving to a position where no one blocks the path between him and the monster. As he does so, he pulls a vial from his apron.
Dude, you guys are crazy for Wanting to fight this thing. This is a Bulette!! Even Dragons will decide they suddenly have somewhere else they need to be rather than take on these killing machines on legs
Leralt Littlehorn |
I dont see the big deal. We are lvl 4 fighting a CR 5 monster sense it is both young and drunk which reduce its normal CR 7 down by 2. A dragon of the same CR would be far more trouble, dont see the connection.
Not everyone is trying to fight it. Leralt for his part is trying to scare it away with a moving fireball. Animals and the like tend to fear fire so with a little pain the thing will hopefully leave.

Who said anything about wanting to fight it? It's drunk, it's a bulette, and it's in the middle of town. That pretty much guarantees a fight. On the bright side, it's a juvenile, so it's not going to shred us quite so badly as a full grown specimen. Gellius doesn't want to fight it, but if we take it now while we have some advantage, we won't have to fight it when it's grown up and sober.
Then again, Gellius doesn't want to be on this island, but he's got a debt to pay. On the bright side, if he helps get this colony up and running successfully, the Abadarians won't have him over a barrel any more.
Gellius Krupt |
If the island doesn't exist on this plane, all the better. Gellius can argue that failure of the colony was beyond his control, but he did do everything in his power for the service of Abadar. Contract settled.
Lena Relani |
I agree with Gellius, we need to take it out now, while we're all together. What if it comes back again and eats a bunch of colonists or one of us if we've split up? Its a juvenile and its drunk so we have a better chance of killing it now than in a few years when its fully grown, sober and has a family of its own.
Also tasty Bulette BBQ :D
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
You're right, its reflex should be +8, not +10. I'll check to see if it makes (or made) any difference.
Edit: Nope, no difference. It just has been rolling better with the Reflex saves. Apparently drunkeness makes bulettes extremely agile.
Mevakh Ahrask |
Hey, guys, I am transferring to Homicide in two weeks. I don't know what exactly my schedule is going to look like, though I imagine I may be even scarcer at some points. I haven't been a great player in this game because of the time constraints of my job, and I imagine it might get worse. If it does, I may have to cut back on my games.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Mevakh, no problem. Just let us know. And good luck on Homicide! (That sounds a bit morbid, doesn't it?)
