"Spit it out! What was he looking to buy?" Kazul narrows his eyes and lets the man know he means business and he better reveal all he knows.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

The fat merchant's face turns bright red. "That's not any of your business! That is between him..." he waves his arm in a broad arc to encompass the ruins of the manor "...and her wife!" At this he stabs a pudgy finger at Anevia. "Ask them if you want to know so badly!"

"Kazul, look around. We are at war. If he bought himself a picture or a courtesan.... is it important now? All we have to do now is get him home safely. And find the ladys partner. And then kick every thrice dammed demon out of our city."

Kazul ignores the paladin, smiling to himself that he flustered the merchant. He gives the area a look with his darkvision. Unless he sees something, he says, "Nothing here, moving on."

I think at this juncture, unless whatever we are discussing might have impacted Kenebras' safety or will be important to us in the future, we should just move on

she moves to the merchant's side

We would value your advice on how best to approach your manor, being able to see it from as far away as possible would be ideal, are there any elevated roads around it we should use?

she tries to distract Hargus from the conversation and engage him in something she feels he would find important and want to contribute to.

"Umm, pardon me." The man claps his hands, sending four white ponies back to wherever they came from in a whomp of hazy smoke. "My name is Sjurd. I was coming to Kenabres for the festival when - well, when all of this happened. I'm sure you were here." His face is lined with worry. "I don't know my way, but I came here to fight against the Abyss and its servants. May I join you?"

"We welcome all aboard who want to help..given the dire situation. As long as you can defend yourself. Oh sorry, I am Kazul." The burly half-orc extends his hand out to the librarian.

Farasha levels her gaze sternly on the man, perhaps trying to fathom his moral compass before committing herself.

Then she breaks in to a free and natural grin.

It's no good, how could we possibly refuse the aid of a crusader who can summon celestial ponies at will?!

She claps him on the shoulder.

I'm Farasha, chosen of Desna, welcome to the herd team!

Her hand comes away slightly sticky.

You may want to change clothes, or do that arcane trick of making yourself clean in an instant. Otherwise the first burning building we see may be your last...

she tries to be encouraging in a camaraderie sort of way, but is unsure of how she's coming across given her lack of experience.

"You honor me." Sjurd touches a knuckle to his forehead in respect. He grimaces slightly as he surveys his clothing. "That is an excellent idea." With a wave of his hand, the oil is scraped from his clothing. "Let's get you, too." He uses the spell to clean up the others as they remove their bindings.

He finishes and waits expectantly. "I am ready when you are."

We head to Horgus' manor (J).

You set out north-by-northwest, finding a suitable hole in the wall to pass through. You don't see anything, but the sounds of the city's agony are all around you. It is approaching dusk when you round a turn in the streets. You are just a few hundred yards from the front gate of the manor, when you are confronted by a horrid sight: there is a circle here, with a fountain in the center. The statue used to be a crusader of note, but now it is broken and covered in blood. A girl kneels in front of the fountain with her hands bound behind her. She sobs uncontrollably, her tears cutting streaks on her dirty face. Around her are 5 men and women in the livery of the Gold Hawks - one of the crusade's most notable companies.

A woman - obviously the one in charge - stands next to the sobbing girl, and speaks. "Don't worry, child. I promise it will be swift and painless. Your sacrifice will help all of us. You will not be forgotten." Two of the crusaders bend the girl forward so her neck stretches out. With a wild look in her eye, the leader lifts her sword to strike...

Never would true crusaders execute a helpless woman in the middle of the street!

Without hesitation Farasha brings her already nocked bow up, sighting along the arrow at the woman's head and loosing that shaft plus another in quick succession.

An erstwhile companion, the wayward wizard Fabian, is on the far side of the group of crusaders who seem to be doing something bad to the sobbing young girl. Seeing his companions, he feels a swell of hope; he couldn't take on these so-called crusaders himself, but with their help, she might just be rescued.

Fabian runs forward so that he's at least 10 feet away from the closest crusader who might hit him, but so that there are several crusaders within a fifteen foot cone in front of him. Brandishing his staff, he speaks some arcane words. A scintillating cone of dazzling colors shoots out from his staff.

Actions:

Casting Color Spray. Will save DC 14.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but is there a combat map? I didn't see it in the campaign info, but I may have been looking in the wrong place.

There is not a map on this one.

The leader's stroke goes wide as she falls to the cobblestone pavement. The young woman screams as the blood splatters on her clothing. Four of the five Gold Hawks go down, knocked senseless by Fabian's timely spell. The last one grabs the girl by her hair, dragging her roughly to her feet. He draws a dagger and holds it to her throat.

"What in the name of the Abyss are you doing?!?!" he screams. "You know! You know as well as I! We need this girl to grant us the power to fight the demons!"

He places himself so that the girl is effectively shielding him.

Kazul, I gave this one to you, but there really is no effective way to throw a javelin non-lethally. It's weighted and balanced to use the pointy end, and stick it in the target. You can always crack someone's skull swinging with the wooden end, of course.

Throwing his old sword to the crusaders Bollwerk moves closer with holy wrath in his eyes. "There is only two things needed to slay a demon. And I have killed at least one so far. It takes Cold Iron and a rightous heart. Not a girls blood! And ask the others if I did."

"Enough of this! You will not harm her!" Sjurd reaches out with his hands and hums an eldritch chant.

Unsure of how the others actions are already going to affect the ex-crusader, she is loathe to simply act in case she endangers the innocent girl. She simply draws another arrow and aims at the man's head.

Farasha draws a bead on the man and readies an action to shoot him should either the girl stop providing cover to him or else if he looks about to use the dagger on the girl.

The man looks about, wild eyed and afraid. For a moment he looks as if he is going to relent, but with a snarl he yanks the girl's head back and cuts her throat...

Only to have his dagger slip from his grasp and fall to the cobblestone street.

He looks at Sjurd in disbelief, then shoves the girl towards you and runs the other way, screaming.

Sjurd looks to Farasha. "Can you shoot him in the leg? We must know what caused this madness."

Fabian rushes forward to grab the girl that the man almost killed, pulling her away from the other crazies before they recover from his color spray.

Nodding to Bollwerk, Kazul, and Farasha, he says, "Good to see you again. These others here will recover from the assault on their senses pretty soon. We should tie them up; we might be able to figure out from them what caused the madness."

Turning to the victim, he says, "Are you OK?"

Seeming to speak to herself more than her companions, Farasha regretfully exclaims

If I let him go free, he will only be free to tyrannize someone else...

She fires two arrows in quick succession, both aimed at the fleeing man's back.

She turns to Sjurd

We have no time to forgive, to rehabilitate, right now we must do what we have to in order to regain the city's freedom. A greater goal that has some unfortunate implications for those of our enemies that might otherwise, in a more forgiving time, perhaps have earned a genuine second chance.

she shakes her head regretfully

Though I doubt such as these, with turncoat hearts, have a genuine word to speak about beseeching forgiveness...

The wayward crusader's screams are cut short as the arrows take him in the back. He falls, the momentum of his run causing him to slide for a few feet along the cobblestone street.

The young girl shrieks in panic as Fabian grabs her, struggling against his grasp. Its only when he speaks that she begins to calm down.

"Th..they were going to kill me! They said it w..would call down j..justice on the demons!" She begins sobbing again, placing her face in her hands. "My brother! They killed him when he t..tried to stop them!"

As you listen, the unconscious Gold Hawks begin to stir...

"They should be blind for several more seconds," Fabian says. "Quick; tie them up."

Fabian does not have any rope of his own, but he will use any rope, or, failing that, strips of their clothing to start tying them up.

Sjurd does not have rope, but he does step quickly to each prone form and removes their weapons. He dumps them in a pile so that the party is between the weapons and the Gold Hawks.

Farasha looks scornfully at the Gold Hawks groaning on the cobbles, still covering them with her bow.

We cannot wander around Kenabres with these in tow, I feel it best if we send them back to the tower so they can be kept under watch.

Lifting each of them Bollwerk nearly yells."You disgust me. But it seems madness followed the invasion. Farasha, either we do so, or we have to kill them. And I do not want to."

Anevia shuffles her feet where she stands back behind all of you. "We can't leave them here, bound and helpless. It would be the same as killing them," she whispers softly. "I know these Gold Hawks. Irabeth knew them, rather. Their reputation is one of honor. I'm not sure what madness this is, but we can't leave them here to die."

She steps forward to kneel down before one of the men on the ground. "This isn't going to get any easier, and we don't know what else is waiting for us out there." Fabien tries talking gently to the young woman they rescued. "Are you OK? Is there anywhere we can help you get to?"

He nods to his erstwhile companions. "It is good to see you again. What have you learned since coming back to the surface? I've wandered around; it's quite a mess, quite a disaster up here."

As the soldiers begin to recover, there's some confusion among them as some are held down with blades at their throats, some standing with a sword in hand (being told to follow), and at least on still unconscious one the ground with wounds.

No uniform strategy for these guys?

Anevia grabs Kazul's sword-arm. "Enough. There's been enough killing here. These are good people, at least as far as I know them. It's obvious the events here have unhinged them, and we need to help fix that." She looks at all of you, shifting her makeshift crutch under her arm. "Listen, we need to stick together and gather as many allies as we can. Are these people evil? Or just misguided? If they believe there needs to be an engine of salvation, then that be us, even for just a short time.' She starts out after Farasha. "Now let's move."

@Fabian
The girl wipes the tears from her eyes, smearing her face with dirt and blood. "I'm ok, sir. I haven't seen much, I've been hiding out. I...I don't have anywhere to go. Can I come with you?"

Fabian keeps an eye out on the waking Gold Hawks, heeding what Anevia says, but remaining cautious. "Do you know where Irabeth is? We should take them to her. Too many bad things have happened. Too many good lives have been lost. Anybody who can be redeemed, should be, I agree."

Farasha whispers to Kazul

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me...let's try Anevia's way and see if they earn redemption and forgiveness, if not then they'll earn an arrow from me or a slice of falchion from you...fair enough?

Farasha supports Anevia's preference, and is keen to move on to the manor.

Kazul nods and smiles and Farasha. He leaves the Gold Hawk alone and follows the group.

In the middle of all the chaos and destruction, Horgus Gwerm’s manor is something of a miracle, for it seems to have escaped without any damage at all. Entering the grounds, Horgus is disgusted to find that his servants and guards abandoned their posts.

"What's more, they stole as much of the valuables as they could carry." He says with distaste. "But, let us see what we shall see..." He leads you to a cellar where he opens a seemingly harmless door. You aren't sure how he did it, but he opens that portal to reveal a well-hidden vault. He enters, and takes a careful look inside. Within a moment he emerges carrying a small pouch.

"Hrm," he begins awkwardly, "of course you recognized my importance immediately, but still, you did a most adequate job of returning me to the surface. Above average even." He places the pouch in Farasha's hand. "I will remain here, where it is safe...safer, anyway. Good luck."

A quick glance shows the pouch contains 1000 gp.

Back on the surface, Anevia turns to you. "I can't think of where Irabeth might be, but I hope she may have left some note at our home. Please, its due north from here."

Thank you for your generosity, especially given these circumstances

If you're sure you will be safe here then we will move on, but if you need us then you know where we're headed, otherwise we'll check back at the library as soon as we can if you want to leave us a message there. Take care of yourself

she murmurs a blessing before turning and leaving. As Anevia voices her concern she replies

With all due haste we will of course move towards your home, I'm sure your wife will be fine, we'll find her never fear

she lays a reassuring hand on Anevia's shoulder before moving on, bow ready as they move through the dark and fire blackened streets.

"Of course, we must save as many as we can from these horrors. Onward, let us find this woman and bring her to safety."

You set out in a general northerly course, following Anevia's direction She can barely contain her growing nervousness as you get closer to the place where she and Irabeth lived. Several times, she has fallen due to her haste. The crutch she has used since you first fell into the crevasse has become an anchor, frustrating her.

"Damn the gods," she curses, her latest fall cutting her knee on the good leg. "I can't move through this mess! We'll never get there!"

Suddenly, you become aware of a low chanting coming from ahead. You can't see anything from where you are, but you are fairly certain the noise is just around the building from where you stand.

The sight before you is another scene of demonic madness. Standing in a circle are five cultists with their arms raised, engaged in a vile ritual. They have bound and gagged a young boy, who lies in a heap in the middle of the circle. His life blood leaks out onto the cobblestone where they have cut his veins.

At the moment, they are too busy with their ritual to notice you.

No map. The closest cultist is 20' from where you stand, the farthest, 40'. They are much like the ones you fought in the mongrel lair - armed with glaives and bearing the unholy symbology of Baphomet. You have a surprise round - what do you do?

Fabian feels sick as he sees this. Not only have demons destroyed his city, but the people in the city are going mad-- or the underground madness has come to the surface. Wishing that he had prepared more Color Spray spells, but knowing that that energy is expended from his mind, he steps forward, brandishes his staff, and activates his Protective Ward.

"Stay within 10 feet of me, and it will enhance your defense!" he says to his companions.

Fabian takes a five-foot step towards the cultists, so that if his companions move in to attack them they may still be within the range of his ward.

Effect in progress: Protective Ward. Everybody ally 10 feet of Fabian gets a +1 deflection bonus to AC.
