"I reckon we can help," Lucille says, stepping forward. She slings her musket and pulls out her coiled whip, her goto tool. "What seems to be the problem?"

I'm back.

"Thank you." Lann says, and he and the woman put up their weapons, but do not drop their guard. He leads you over to the pile of rubble.

Looking at the situation, you can see that the tower has collapsed, trapping someone underneath. The two have been digging away at the pile, but have reached some sort of impasse. They are quite agitated, as if they feel they are running out of time.

Knowledge Engineering or Dungeoneering, or something else if you think it may apply to uncovering someone buried in rubble without hurting them.

Moving in to help Bollwerk stops and looks at the wizard helplessly. "I think someone more educated has to tell the ones with brawn what to do!"

Fabian will take a look at the collapsed pile of rubble to figure out what the best approach to freeing those underneath might be.

He will use the last levitation he has available today from the Scale of Terendelev to move the largest piece of rubble he can lift with it.

Lucille surveys the rubble, and whistles.

"I've dealt with a few rockslides out in the Spellscar before, but nothing like this. I've two hands and a willing back -- just point me at what needs doing and I'll do it. " She looks again at the pile, then adds, "And let me know if there's anything high up that's in danger of coming down -- I can grab and topple things with my whip if need be."

I'll make a Survival roll in case that helps. I would think that would be of some use in knowing how to climb over rubble and clear it efficiently, but wouldn't help at all with making sure man-made structures don't collapse. So maybe some help to speed, if not safety.

Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Since Fabian seems to know what he's doing, Kazul will follow his lead and help clear the rubble, per his instructions.

The rubble pile is perilous, and it takes ten minutes of digging under Fabian's direction to reach a point where only one hazard remains: a single large boulder. Fabian can tell you that you must be careful here, one false move can cause the boulder to shift, crushing the poor creature underneath it. Lann talks to his trapped friend, trying to calm him, while the woman keeps watch.

Need a STR check here. (One PC will roll, up to 6 can assist: success on a DC 10 adds +2 to STR roll, a roll of 20 adds +4. Fabian's use of Terenedelev's scale adds another +4.) Who is rolling and who is assisting? Go ahead and roll. If you are doing anything you think may add to the roll besides assisting, let me know.

Kazul will assist Bollwerk, who appears to be the strongest.
Aid another Str check vs. DC 10: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Seren casts Bull's Strength on Bollwerk. Then works to assist. Aid: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Dieter also aids the efforts. Aid: 1d20 ⇒ 15

So we have a Bulls Strength on Bollwerk, and a total of +4 assisting right now.

"Come on, everyone! Put your backs into it. Ganbareeeee!"

With a heave, and some timely assistance, Bollwerk manages to move the boulder enough for Lann to pull out the trapped creature. Coughing and sputtering, the deformed man emerges from the rubble to lay sprawled on the cave floor. He is alive, but wounded from his ordeal.

Lann kneels down next to his companion. "Crel? Are you alright? Can you move?" He asks with some concern.

Moving closer, Horgus sees the three and recoils. "Pitlings..." Horgus says with disgust, "Don't trust them, they're evil mutants!"

"Pitlings? Where? Here?" says Aravashnial, his excitement barely hidden.

Lann rises and looks at the two, his face twisted in anger. "It would behoove you to learn some manners." He says, retrieving an item from his belt. Bending down, you see him give a potion of some sort to Crel, who drinks it and lays back with a sigh of relief. Lann looks back at you.

"You are in our world, surface dwellers. While I thank you for your help in saving Crel, If you want my help, it would be best if you mind your tongues." He reaches down and helps Crel to his feet, and the three of them start off. Calling over his shoulder, he says; "Follow us."

In a blur of motion, Dieter whirls around and cuffs Horgus across the face. "That. Is. ENOUGH." His words are flat and cold, punctuated by a pointed finger. "If you cannot mind your tongue, then I will mind it for you. From now on, you will not speak unless spoken to, Cupcake. You will not open your gods-damned little mouth unless someone's life is in danger. Do you understand? Because if you do not understand, Cupcake, then you will spend the rest of this trip bound and gagged." He holds his hand up high again, ready to strike. "I sure hope that all I see from you is a silent nod. Now, do you understand?"

Fabian sees Dieter talking to Horgus, and decides not to intervene there. He also sees Bollwerk talking to the deformed people they've just helped, and decides not to intervene there either.

Instead, he walks closer to Aravashnial, and says quietly to the blind elf, "What are pitlings? I have not heard of them before. What do you know about them?"

Horgus looks shocked for a moment, mouth hanging open. Then, with a dark look at Dieter, he speaks: "You have just made a very big mistake. I could have helped you greatly when we reached the surface. I have extensive resources, and you will need them if we ever make it there." He pauses to look around at all of you.
"But now I see that I cannot trust any of you. I knew all along that that your peasant upbringing would come through, and I was right." He falls silent, and walks quietly to the back of the group.

Dieter follows behind him as he walks to the back of the group. "Hey, Cupcake." When Horgus turns around, Dieter cuffs him again, harder than the first time. "You spoke without permission." He holds his hand up. "Again. Do you understand?"

Horgus wipes his face where Dieter struck him. "Do not strike me again, peasant. I do not take orders from the likes of you. You are a fool. And I do not suffer fools."

Fabian finds himself becoming increasingly alarmed as he sees Dieter interacting with Horgus. Aside to Aravashnial, he says, "I'm sorry, I want to go deal with this... I am very interested in what you know of the pitlings, though."

He walks over to Dieter and puts his hand on the aasimar's shoulder. "Dieter, let it go," he says quietly. "Go help the man we dug up get himself together, and make sure he is OK. We can't afford to fight amongst ourselves like this."

Fabian will then talk to Horgus. "Please excuse his behavior. Everybody is stressed down here. We've witnessed the fall of Terendelev, and we don't know what things are like on the surface. We're all worried. And we all need to work together. There aren't enough of us. I understand where you're coming from; you may know of my mother, the paladin Alissa Moldonado. But, down here, there aren't enough of us for the full structure of society to maintain itself. People are going to say things that you thing are out of order. I'm sorry for that, but we have to stick together. Please."

Hoping that name-dropping his mother gives a small bonus, and that whatever help the group has given to Horgus before will count for something, take 10 on Diplomacy for a result of 13 before any bonuses the GM sees fit to give....

Clapping his hands Bollwerk looks at the two fighting.
"Bravo! You know, that is how demons fight, if they do not want to use brute force. They sow discord. Dieter, you know it was too much what you did! You are far better than that. What shall our hosts think. Horgus, you know one of the first dutys of a noble man is to act noble. It must be the darkness the despair and the loss. Are you not all better than that!"

Before Fabian and Bollwerk, and before Dieter can swing again...

"STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW!" A slim hand reaches out and grabs Dieter's wrist before he can hit Horgus again. Anevia hobbles between the noble and the swashbuckler, her face a mask of rage.

"What is wrong with you?!?!" she says, poking Dieter in the chest with her makeshift crutch. "Just because you are some kind of self-styled hero, you think that you can slap him around? That somehow your fancy sword-work makes you superior to the rest of us?" She lowers her crutch, getting right up to the aasimar's face. "Just so you know, 'hero', Irabeth would tear you to pieces if she were here right now, seeing what you did. She doesn't suffer fools either."

"As for you," she says, whirling on Horgus, "keep your opinions to yourself. We need all the help we can get down here, and these creat... these people are our only hope right now."

There is a palpable silence as Anevia hobbles back to the blind elf's side. "Men." she mutters.

Lucille leans hunched over against the stone that had until recently pinned Crel, sweat dripping down her face as she tries to catch her breath from the effort. "Gettin' soft," she mutters.

She raises her head and watches as Lann feeds a potion to his friend. "I don't think I managed to help much, but I did what I could. Looks like he'll make it -- that's good. Too many didn't." She catches movement out of the corner of her eye and hears a slap. "Scuse me a moment," she adds, as she crosses to see about the commotion.

Lucille is just in time to hear Anevia's lecture and can guess its cause, even without knowing the specifics. She nods emphatically at the woman's final word.

"Easy does it," Lucille says, giving her last waterskin an appraising shake. "It's been a tough few days, its hot, and we've all been working hard. No need to get riled up." She hands her waterskin to Dieter. "Drink up. Don't let yourself get light-headed from thirst." After he finishes she passes it on to Horgus, then the blind elf, Anevia, and anyone else who needs it.

"Y'all keep it together," she says finally, "And we'll get outta here just fine."

Dieter stands erect, then cuts a formal bow towards Anevia. "My apologies. I acted rashly." He turns to face Horgus. "Mr. Horgus, you are a loudmouth, useless, contemptible little man. You have contributed nothing but pretensious derision to everyone and everything around you." He turns toward Anevia again. "That is why I slapped him. Perhaps he did not deserve it, but given the circumstances, I would hope he would recognize how damaging and inconsiderate his comments are to those around him." He takes a deep, calming breath. He gives Horgus a sidelong glance. "I trust this is the end of your inappropriate comments. No one in this company deserves to be called a mutant, or a peasant, or a monster, or anything of the sort."

Dieter walks over to the new acquaintances and offers his hand in friendship. "My name is Dieter. I am sorry you had to see that. He has been an unpleasant canker sore since we first met him, but we are still trying to save his life."

To show that I am back on my good manners.
Diplomacy 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Kazul watches the swashbuckler smack around the merchant and the rest of the party react. They're being so loud...I'm sure everyone around knows we're here!

He looks at Lann, "Like you said, this is your world. Lead the way!"

Ok, lets get this sorted out...

Horgus stays where he is, arms folded across his chest, eyes looking out darkly at you, but he says nothing.

Anevia looks at Dieter, then at the rest of the group. Tears come to her eyes as she speaks."We don't have the time to squabble like this. Terrible things have happened up...there." She waves her hand upwards. "Irabeth is up there, as well as your families and friends. The ignorant words of a noble fool may be grating, but don't deserve that. Bollwerk is right, this what the demons would want us to do. We need to get going." She wipes her eyes and begins limping towards Lann, Kazul and the others up ahead.

As the line begins moving again, Aravashnial calls Fabian to his side. "To answer your question," he begins, "there have always been rumors of a people living in the caverns and sewers of Kenabres. Mutants, mole-people, pitlings, all names given to them by mothers trying to scare their children into good behavior. Now we see actual proof of their existence!" The blind elf can barely contain his excitement, and Fabian can tell his interest is something more than idle curiosity.

Up ahead, Lann faces Kazul. "You are different from them, like us, but not so much. Do they call you such names?" He asks the half orc with a sense of curiousity, and pain, and Kazul can see that the man's sharp ears can hear the elf's discussion clearly, and he grimaces at every 'pitling' and 'mole-people' name used.

Ok, describe what you are doing, or saying, and we'll move out. For the metagame, you had all of the NPC's attitudes at friendly, but that has fallen with recent events. Keep in mind that this campaign has a lot to do with redemption, and is on a grand scale. You will be fighting a full-scale war after all. You will need all the allies you can muster, however irritating.

I can heal your wounds. But you have to help me, too. I need you to work together with us! I would just ask from you to just take a moment to think about yourself. You seem to be an educated man, a man who said he is a trader. I think you know that the ugliest piece of rock can hide a true gem. Look at me. Usually people run from me and I try very hard to show them that comming from bad stock does not make me bad. I used to be a simple man, a man who thought that life would continue as it is. I was such a fool. And I think we all were. Otherwise... otherwise we might have prevented the fall of Kenebras. Now we all have to work hard together. Everyone as good as he can. "Sorry about that," she says to Lann. "A bit of a row, but I think they're over it. It's been a hard few days. Your friend gonna be all right? We're low on supplies, but..." She trails off, while looking at Crel appraisingly.

Then she holds out her hand. "They call me Sweet Lucille. Don't rightly know what's going on here -- I just got to Kenabres when everything shook apart. But y'all seem to call these tunnels home, is that right? Reckon you could help us find our way back to the surface? We'd be mighty grateful."

She paused for a moment, then continued. "Ain't met your type before. My...companion called y'all 'pitlings'. Is that the right word, or is there another I should use?"

You guys are making me work for this...

Bollwerk:
Horgus walks for a few moments in silence. "Your words are true, Bollwerk. Would that all of your companions felt that way." He says, throwing a nod of his head towards Dieter. "I will not be treated like that by any man, noble or no. This situation has been thrust upon me for what reason I cannot fathom, but I do not appreciate being in it." He walks for a while, contemplating his next words. "You can choose to believe me or not. I have heard nothing but evil things about the dwellers below the city." He says no more.

Fabian:
Aravshnial seems to be quite pleased that someone asks him about the subject. "There are legends of a people banished beneath the streets of Kenabres. Human children of the First Crusaders, warped and driven mad by the evils of the Worldwound. They were banished here because of the terrible deeds they committed on the surface. Maybe 'banished' is not the right word," he corrects, "say rather they escaped here, never to be seen again. But they are said to sneak out into the night, stealing women and children from their beds. We should be wary."

Lucille and Kazul:
Lann looks sharply at Lucille, his face twisted with anger. For a moment, he looks as if he is going to scream at her, but then his features soften. "He is a fool. Those who know nothing make stories about what they do not understand," he begins.

"We are the First Children. The sons and daughters of those who drove back the hordes of demons during the First Crusade." It's nearly imperceptible, but you could swear that the three walk a little taller, hold their heads a little higher, as Lann says this."Twisted and mutated by the evil energies of the Worldwound, we were driven underground by an ignorant and fearful populace. Parents, who until then had been the heroes of the Crusade, fled to save themselves and their children."

He deflates a bit, and walks for a while in silence. "My people have lived here ever since, making our way underground, surviving as best we might. But we yearn to return to the surface, to be under the stars again, to fight the hordes and exact our revenge." He stops and looks directly into Lucille's eyes. "Kenabres is our home too, Sweet Lucille of the sky-people."

"Sad tale indeed, Lann. And yes, we half-orcs have had to deal with racial prejudice and hatred all our lives as well. But you deal with it and move on." You can tell Kazul does not like to talk about his personal life. "Well, I do not judge a book by its cover. I will defer to you in your surroundings, but I have people up there I must check upon. So the faster you get us out of here and to the surface, the more grateful I will be."

Lucille nods. "Oh, I'd say Kenabres is more yours than mine, Lann. I'm from Alkenstar. You know, the Spellscar?" She searches Lann's face for recognition. "Down there, a Spellstorm whips up, and any man caught by it comes out the other side all twisted up. If he comes out at all. You learn to judge a man by what he does, not what he looks like, or the fancy words he uses. Cause you know next time, it might be you just as easy. I reckon that's a lot like this."

Lucille shrugs.

"Or maybe not. Ain't any heroes down there, like you and yours are. Just people scraping to get by. Anyways, you ever need help, you or any of the First Children, I'll do what I can. Especially if'n you can help me get back up topside."

Yeah, makin you work -- that's your punishment for doing a great job.

Fabian to Aravshnial:
Interesting. Mostly human, though? If so, these are not the people who escaped. The First Crusade started a century ago, so these will probably be children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those, if they have the lifespan of humans. We should be cautious, yes, but we should also accept that they might potentially be allies.

Bollwerk:
"Hrmph." is all he says, but moves out with the group.

Fabian:
"We shall see..." whispers Aravashnial.

Lann looks at Lucille and Kazul appreciatively, nods and leads the way out of the cave.

It's obvious why the cave was chosen for a watchtower - many tunnels lead from it. It's a natural chokepoint that can easily control access to those tunnels. Lann looks back over his shoulder. "We must take an alternate route. The recent tremors have collapsed the main tunnel." The three move silently through the tunnels for some time. Every once in a while they stop and converse. It is obvious that they are nervous about the slow pace and the light sources, but they bear it and keep moving.

After a good while, they stop, holding up their hands to stop the group. In the dim light, you can see a crevasse at the feet of Lann and his companions. There is a hint of dust in the air, and the sound of falling rubble in the depths.

Lann comes back a few steps to you. "This is not good. This was not here a short while ago. We must cross." The crevasse is 10' wide, and looking down, 60' deep. There is a slight edge along the left side of the crevasse that someone might climb along, but that's it.

Farasha:
Your patrol sets out briskly, quickly reaching the tunnel exit from Neatholme. The guards at the entrance cave nod silently at your company, who move swiftly through the gate. The way is dimly lit with the same lichen that grows all about the walls of the town. They make sure you are placed in the middle of the patrol, but they do not look at you, and they do not speak.

"By Iomedeas light. That will be difficult. Rope and what else we have to secure that way.

Kazul peers across the other side with his darkvision and then motions the others out of the way as he moves 10' back. He sprints across and jumps the crevasse, hopefully landing safely on the other side.

Dieter stays pointedly quiet during the march further into darkness. He recognizes that his actions likely ran counter to several of the other group members. Why some of them insist on coddling a do-nothing buffoon is beyond me. But we need each other. He trudges in silence, until they come to the crevasse in the rock. He steps lightly and leaps across, hoping to make it to the other side.

Bollwerk will uncoil his rope and throw it to kazul and Dieter. Looking around he searches for a way to secure it on his side.
[/B]"This will be very hard but we will manage. I have 30 feet of rope and I know we have some more. We will lower you down and get you up on the other side. I know you can´t do it Aravashnial, Sir Horgus, Anevia. Who wants to go down first?"[/B] With that bollwerk packs his armor and most weapons in his backpack and throws him to Dieter, so that he is less loaded and better able to work hard.

Lucille pulls a 50 foot coil of rope from her pack. "Here's some more. We can make a bridge, or as you say, lower down anyone who needs that. I'll stay on guard and cross last."

Once she's spoken, she takes out her musket and watches for intruders.
