With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

"So we're fighting it then. All right, tally ho, Sir Didymus!"
I see you guys left a gap for me to burning hands through. :)
Numalar maneuvers Sir Didymus onto the top of the "bridge," hauling up just behind Scarlet and Alia.
I am assuming I can cast burning hands without hitting Scarlet. If I can't do that from here then I can probably do it from the square NW of Luna, shooting diagonally to get the west half of the bear. So moving 20' on Sir Didymus, then casting Burning Hands. Using Saltpeter.
concentration:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Numalar pulls out his symbol and shouts "Qa' quv!"
A tongue of flame pours out of his mouth.
Numalar coughs and sputters, as smoke trails from his mouth. "Agh... By Macrathane's Rotten Left Testicle that burns..." he mutters. He grips his spear and awaits a counterattack from the bear.
Will use draconic defense if I am hit. Hopefully the bear doesn't have reach.
GGGM: You mentioned the Knowledge: Nature check was penalized for distance. Now that I am right there 10' away would my 17 be good enough (or a 19 if Alia's aid counts)?

The Heal check actually. Normally you need to be in contact with the subject... like Scarlet is, to avoid a penalty.

You are right, my bad. It was a heal check. I don't think I want to jump on the bear though just for a skill bonus.
Celyne lets fly a bolt, but it flies wide. Her aim put off by the fact Scarlet is in her way. There's a -4 penalty to hit for firing into the melee (without Precise Shot), and +1 bonus to hit and damage for Posh's inspiration.
Luna attacks but the thrashing bear is too quick to be easily bitten.
Scarlet likewise misses in her burning, supernatural fury.
reflex:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Numalar's burning magical breath is all-consuming, but the beast hunkers down under the worst of the flames. Still the smell of damp burnt, fur is horrible.
Zokon Don't forget you are inspired (at least until Posh's turn)! Which, by the way is enough to make the difference in hitting the thing with one of your shots. I added the extra couple of points of damage too.
Zokon's first shot just misses but his next shot buries it self in the bear's meaty shoulder. It looks up to see the man jeer him. The bear roars in fury. It rears and lifts Scarlet over its head, tossing her aside.
She lands hard on the cave floor amid a pile of bones and equipment that put her in mind of the sort worn by the Sootscale kobolds she had seen in the radish patch.
Grapple (move Scarlet high over the cave floor):1d20 + 13 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 13 + 5 = 33 1d3 ⇒ 2 Scarlet I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter with that roll but you get a counter grapple check (to break free) with a +4 bonus since the bear is putting you in a space with no floor for 20 feet. Because you have (minimally) one hand full though you take a -4 penalty to the roll so it is a wash, but you get to make it if you like. For now though I am assuming the bear drops you into the cave where you land prone--assuming you don't have some clever way out of the situation.
Scarlet's falling damage:2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
And then just as it seemed that things could not get any worse the wound dealt to the bear by Alia's blade begins to rapidly knit itself closed. +5 hp (this removes the nonlethal damage which in turn eliminates the fatigue effect).
Numalar The bear does not seem to have particularly long reach (it is large, can rear up but the limited nature of hind legs and front paws give it only 5' of reach).
Conditions Outside dim lighting and moderate rain.
Inspired +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

would that be enough to know about lycanthropes and such? or is know nature even the right roll for that?
Celyne:
There is no official knowledge relating to lycanthropy or shapechangers in general. Usually I go with knowledges relating to such a creature's base form Knowledge local and/or nature for the werewolf that lives down the street, or knowledge geography or history for that kingdom of kitsune and so on. Nature seems a good choice here given the observations to this point.
If this thing is a lycanthrope, it is a particularly queer one. It is only breathing to be able to bellow. It also seems a lot lot faster than an ordinary ursiform, maybe like twice as fast. You don't know of any sort of lycanthrope like that. It seems intelligent-ish but bloodthirsty and insane--more bestial than actual beasts.
Unhindered by Scarlet, the bear bats away the epee. It swings its huge head around and begs to differ with the elf woman by roaring louder than thunder in her face. More spittle and a chunk of something gristly spray her. Alia can practically taste the bile that undoubtedly sloshes in it's gut and smell its rotting molars.
Posh yer up!
Alia I moved you a 5-foot step closer to the bear.
"That's no normal bear... it's not a lycanthrope either because it's too fast and not breathing... Maybe some kind of undead bear?"
One roll, reveal what you get.

Unfortunately Scarlet is also 10' lower than the platform the bear is currently resting on and does not have the reach, or even a good angle from which to strike at it from there. Luna won't get flanking from you. On the plus side you are out of the bear's reach too.

Using saltpeter again. Since Scarlet is 10' below me I will try to aim the cone upwards a bit so Scarlet will be out of the area of effect.
Numalar's skin has gone particularly pale as he emits a hacking cough, smoke trailing from his mouth. He leers at the bear. "There's more where that came from you misbegotten beast!"

Feel free to restate your actions.
Scarlet stands up and runs around the platform, eventually climbing up. She draws her Silver Warhammer and prepares for another assault.
Zokon's first shot hits with a solid thunk, but the bear's mad scramble for purchase on the slick floor causes the other to strike the floor and ricochet away.
Luna paws and bites at the thing but only connects solidly once opening a wound above its eye.
reflex:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Numalar's angle still not the best upon his mount likewise raises more stink and boils than solid damage.
There's a clap of thunder (only closer) as if lightning had struck the center of the party's tightening circle. But it's not thunder, even though it is now coming straight down like beaded curtains outside. Instead (and possibly to their horror) Celyne, Numalar, and Poshment understand that the noise is sudden inrush of air that occurs when magic gives way to science and air rushes in to fill the void left by a large mass that has suddenly and inexplicably dimension doored itself away.
The bear is gone!
Conditions Outside dim lighting and raining.
Rain reduces visibility ranges by half. Holding the charge, then, move action inside, standard action to ready attack against 'Da Bear'. With Numalar's lights, I should see further than currently possible on the map(thanks low-light vision).
