With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

The plan was once we were done with Bokken to return to Oleg's as we didn't want to leave the place undefended. Unless we want to buy some of his potions (we haven't really had the chance to discuss it as KDM dropped out just after posting what Bokken had in stock) we would head back to Oleg's after that scene. So it might make sense to pick the thread up back at Oleg's.

perhaps upon our return to Oleg's, there are a couple "new" faces that have arrived at the fort...

The return from Bokken's is uneventful and lazy and a bit lonelier for the loss of Bella and Valeska.

It was only by chance that the courier sent by Valeska's father a vintner should find you. Mr Talanove a had won a lucrative contract with the Gold Burrow Trading Company in Oppara and needed his daughter to return with all haste to help with business.

Likewise, Bella of the Everlight's enthusiasm had dimmed of late. Perhaps she had suffered some wavering of faith with their mission, the outside world, or perhaps herself, but she had been silent for long periods of time of late, often after correcting his behavior Fronar noted. She took this as an opportunity to leave with her friend Valeska and to return to her order's monastery in the Icerime Peaks beyond the Great Gronzi Forest.

"Make your mark here and here. Thanks!" And with that the speedy (though heavily armed and armored) little, fuchsia, gnome snatches back the parchment and returns to her grey wolf's saddle.
"And another mission complete Vinegar. And you said it was stupid to stop and ask directions--though I will admit that old man was quite rude, 'Keep off the grass indeed!' Who does he think he is anyhow? Doesn't he know soon-to-be-nobility when he sees it?"
She looks up from her wolf whom she was scratching behind the ear to the party.
"Oh heya. Good luck with- with whatever it is you are doing here." She spins her wolf northward toward the road to leave.

I take it 'Squire Droo Neznee' was the courier that summoned Valeska back to Brevoy?

Numalar nods to Squire Neznee as she mounts her wolf again."Good Luck on your journey, Squire Neznee. But remember: there is no such thing as a 'soon-to-be noble.' You either are or you aren't, and nothing anyone else can do can change that. You may not have a title, but a lack of a title does not mean you are not noble. Safe travels."

Guys, we came to Bokken's in the hope of getting something that would give us an edge against the bandits. Before we leave we should decide if we want to buy from him. We can't really afford the potion of cure moderate wounds, and the potion of endure elements doesn't help us, but do we want to buy the two cure light wounds potions? The "party pool" has 300 gp in it right now so we can afford them if we want them.

"I suppose we should follow suit as the Squire did and get moving; we need to leave soon if we want to return to Oleg's by nightfall. Do we wish to do business with Bokken before we go?"

"Of course, good Bokken. Let us have those two lesser potions. Shall we say, 100 pieces of gold?" Numalar counts out 100 gp and hands them to Bokken.

"Thank you for the potions, dear Bokken! No, we will not keep you as no doubt you have many things awaiting your attention. Friends, let us be off!"

Numalar goes up to his new horse (Which he has named "Blastyoureyes") and gingerly clambers up into the saddle. When he reaches the saddle he realizes he is facing backwards. He tries to turn around in the saddle, only to pitch himself out of the saddle and onto the ground with a *thump!*

He gets off, and dusts himself off. "Hmm, yes. Had to see how the horse would react upon losing it's rider. She seems to be taking it well." Numalar once again clambers up into the saddle, this time facing the correct direction.

"Ready to go, everyone?"

Animals are apparent everywhere from insects, quail and hare to the great elk that regards you from a distant hill. The greying sky so wide and so close above you that it feels as if you could reach up and grasp it.

A curtain of threatening thunderheads roll in from the south and west and it soon becomes apparent that they will overtake you before you reach the trading post--especially now that Celyne has had to dismount. Her horse has developed a hobble.

Lightning flashes ahead. And the thunder rolls.

Roughly meanwhile, Cyrielle and Poshment are riding along the South Rostland Road toward Oleg's Trading Post where they are to meet their fellow explorers when a curious sight meets their eyes, a fuchsia-haired gnomish knight errant astride a barded grey wolf races along the road toward you from the opposite direction.

Retired

Looking down at Poshment from the back of Eloi, Cyrielle brushes a few stray strands of red hair from her sharp, angular face. She dismounts, dropping nimbly to the side of her grey-and-white horse. "Well, Posh, I suppose we had best say hello, hadn't we?" While she waits for the rider to approach, she takes a quick drink from the waterskin on Eloi's back and digs out her pipe.

As the rider draws nearer, she tucks the waterskin away and stands in a comfortable, relaxed position, left hand brushing against her hilt. "'Ello, this is the way to Oleg's Trading Post, no? My friend, the little one here, and I have charters to meet with a group out here. A chance for fame and glory...I envy those who've been out in this wild already. Oh! Formalities! Zokon:
That last growl of thunder--a boom so loud and deep you could feel its echo between your ribs, seemed to shake the very terrain around you. Perhaps a bit too much.

While you and your fellows where looking skyward (or in Celyne's case tending to the horse), you could swear that the mound of earth and foliage immediately to the north of you and the one just to the west, moved--not closer or anything just--up and only for what must have been the blink of an eye, revealing something beneath, something dark.

Hunter's interest peaked, from your vantage point in the saddle you see an unusually large number of small bird and animal bones about the field, most of them concentrated around the bases of the grassy tufts that seem to be a staple of these plains.

On top of that your slayer-sense is tingling. Perhaps Zokon has always wondered what it felt like to be in the sights of a patient hunter. He need wonder no more.

Celyne's cat, Luna, notices something is amiss as well from the miniature hill to your north.

At this point Celyne has only just diagnosed the problem with her horse.

Luna:
Luna feels that she must defend her friend from some danger emanating from the general direction of Numalar. Luna crouches low, and strikes a frightening defensive posture as if preparing to pounce that way. She growls slightly.

Celyne has only just started removing the thistles from her horse's legs. She can stop and make a Perception check with a +4 circumstance bonus if you wish.

He then nocks and fires an arrow at the spider

Composite Longbow + studied target + point Blank Shot: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 171d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

i thought it was a standard action, my bad...

Luna moves between the nearest spider and Celyne into a defensive posture (protecting Celyne, basically, and no affect on Luna's AC since she moved and therefore doesn't have an action left to go full defense).

A charge can be made in a surprise round as a standard action, but you only get one move instead of two from it.

Zokon, on the other hand, won't be able to study a target and still shoot in the same round.

Okay, Numalar is at the top of the round, and everyone has gone in the surprise round, so I'll go ahead.

Numalar looks around, eyes wild, with a feral grimace. Though he looks as startled as the horses he quickly tries to get his mount under control.
"Dammit, Blastyoureyes! Easy! There's nothing to be afraid of; those things are just big piles of legs! Whoa, boy!"

DC 5 Ride check to stay mounted: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

I am assuming spider #1 is still alive for this. If not I will have to re-think this part.

Numalar tugs on the reins, trying to turn the horse around.
Trying to make the horse make a 5' step east, away from spider #1. He might want to do that anyway. Not sure if a ride check is needed for that; if so I can roll it; otherwise just proceeding. I have moved the markers on the map.

With the horse's head out of the way, Numalar looks to the west. The large spider seems to be in the open! He pops something into his mouth and shouts: "Qa' quv!"

Draconic:
Fire of the Spirit!

A tongue of fire pours out of Numalar's mouth, catching the spider in its flames.
Casting burning hands on the spider, and using saltpeter.
burning hands damage (Reflex DC16): 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3) + 3 = 7

Numalar chokes and coughs, and looks a little pale. A little blood trickles from his mouth. "Ha! Weren't expecting that, were you!"

FYI I will activate windy escape the first time I am hit in any round.

Doesn't quite apply as she has the option of a move action as well. And what Zokon said as well.

It will probably be another six hours before I can finish posting for the spiders (at work right now). See you then.

If that is the case, it would never apply, since you can always use a standard action to take a move action instead. There is never any circumstance in the game where you can take a standard but not a move. Honestly I have never heard anyone rule it this way.

With time, reflection and access to all my legal documents (read: game books), you can charge.

The spider, noting the tiger's rapid advance veers from its attack on Zokon at the last moment narrowly dodging Luna's jaws.

Typically this would be a -4 for Luna being there but we'll hand wave that the cagey cat anticipating your move held off a bit that round. So you hit!

@ Fronar: That attack is probably a miss, so it probably doesn't matter, but I think you have taken too many actions here:

Dismount: free
Move: Move
Draw Daggers: Move (you can't draw for free during a move until your BAB is +1 or more)
Attack: Standard

If the attack was a miss anyway then it doesn't really matter.

Luna doesn't have a grab attack; she gets it at 7th level. Luna gets a rake attack only when she grapples. At 7th level she also gets pounce, so she can rake when she charges.

She probably hit with bite & claw for 8 though so she may not need another two attacks.

Meanwhile, Celyne begins an incantation to summon help from beyond. (Looks like from the map you are already dismounted--the horse is in a different set of squares)
