Who was the boy? Who was he to Happy, to Kressle? She speaks loud enough so that the accidental bandit can hear her.

Felton pulls himself from the discussion he was having with Oleg about the wagon to answer Valeska's question.

"Nothing to them," he replies, "at least not that I'm aware of. My understanding was that he had only been with them for a little over a month. He was from Pitax, I believe. An orphan."

Having nothing else to offer, Felton turns back to Oleg.

I think Numalar would find Felton's tone insulting and his pride trait would kick in, so -2 to Diplomacy and Sense motive if those rolls come up.

Numalar frowns, staring balefully at Felton. I will not take that tone from the likes of you.

"You speak bravely now, Jon Felton, now that you know we will spare you. I seem to recall a moment ago you were begging for your life. So do not get self-righteous with us - the fact is you were caught in the act. If you truly wish the blessings of The Everlight, as you say, you will have to acknowledge the wickedness of your deeds. You cannot be redeemed if you think you do not need to be."

"And I would never suggest that a man like you would have met your king, but even the lowliest serf has met his local Lord of the Manor, to whom he owes allegiance. When you come of age you swear to his service, he swears to give you protection and justice, you place your head in his hands, and you are his man - the ceremony of fealty is complete. I am guessing you received no such promises, though, am I right? No, you were little more than a mercenary."

"And do not preach to me about your hard life. I may have lived in the palace of a Duke for a time, but prior to that my family wandered lost and starving in the darklands for nearly ten years, a mile below the earth, a realm full of horrors that would turn you white. And today I have nothing but the clothes on my back, but By My Ancestors, I will not give up my honor, not for gold or for safety."

"You have what you hold? Hah! For centuries such words have been used to justify all kinds of thuggery. Is that how you think it should be, Jon Felton? The strong taking whatever they please, while the weak suffer? By that logic, we are now the rightful lords of this place, having defeated you lot. Eh? No, it takes more than that. There is a difference between a Lord and a rightful Lord. Force may make a thing so, but it does not make a thing right."

"You seem to think that there is no difference between you and us, aside from the fact that you lost. But there is a difference, Jon Felton. You joined these men to protect your own life and for a share of the loot. We volunteered to risk our lives to help an innocent man, with no expectation of reward. That is the difference, Jon Felton. I do not care if you consider us 'worthy' of your fealty. What I care about is that you prove 'worthy' of the mercy we have shown you."

BTW I am not too keen on leaving Felton with his weapons (and not just because they are worth money). If he is going to be armed then we shouldn't leave him alone with Oleg and Svetlana, no matter what the oath. Once the soldiers arrive then we can let them keep an eye on him.

Numalar straightens, blinking, and shakes his head as if emerging from a trance. He has vented his anger and his head clears.

If Jon Felton wants to continue to justify himself:

"Ah, Stop, John Felton," Numalar holds up his hand. "You want to protest. But consider the things that I and my companions have said. Sleep on it. If you still feel the need to justify yourself, talk to me in the morning, and I will listen. We have more urgent matters to attend to now."

"Now... how far is this camp you speak of? And through what kind of terrain? We do not have any map to speak of; as far as I know these lands are largely uncharted."

Damn - my next post got deleted. OK, writing it again.

Numalar turns to Oleg. "Master Oleg, we accept your reward graciously. What my friend merely was trying to say was that we do not require it, and would have been happy to help you even had you nothing to give us."

Almost forgot - do detect magic on the loot and the potions. Spellcraft rolls for identifying the potions:
Spellcraft Healing Potion #1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Spellcraft Healing Potion #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Spellcraft Protection Potion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Numalar looks over at the pile of "loot" taken from the bandits.

"And of course we would be happy to trade whatever we do not need to you. Maybe we can come to some kind of arrangement - instead of coin, you could give us credit perhaps? I don't expect we would have a lot of use for coin out in the wild but the goods you could trade us will no doubt be useful to us. While we are on the subject, what sort of things do you have for sale?"

What do you guys think of that idea? If we open an "account" with Oleg then it means that we don't have to carry so much cash around with us. I suspect that Oleg's is meant to be the "general store" that we buy things at.

"But there is another matter we must attend to first," Numalar says, as he eyes the two captured pack horses. "We must go after the other horses. They won't have gone far yet. Zokon, you brought a horse with you, and Valeska, you have the look of a rider. Who else can ride? Oleg, I wonder if you have any riding saddles we can use for these horses? I can follow along on Gertrude but she won't be as swift as a horse. Perhaps if we bring some feed they will be easier to corral."

I know the horses ran off, but without a rider goading them they will slow to a walk within a minute or two. If they find some pasture along the way they will probably stop to graze. From one of the towers we could probably still see them. So a group of people ought to be able to follow and catch up with them, and rein them in - that is unless the bandit camp is very close - hence why I asked in the previous post. A horse is worth 75 gp and Numalar wouldn't be inclined to just let them go.

"After that, perhaps we should seek out this Bokken, and see what he has to offer."

Ooh, now it gets interesting!

"W-what?" Numalar says stupidly.

Numalar is clearly rocked as the last thing he would expect is to be recognized by a common bandit. Perhaps this man isn't as common as I thought? Numalar looks over Jon Felton more seriously, realizing that he never really paid any attention to who Jon might be.

BTW how old does Jon Felton look? You mentioned that he was not a kid but didn't really narrow things down beyond that.

Numalar racks his brains, trying to think of who Mr. Felton might be - Is there a noble family named Felton? Probably an assumed name... is there someone who matches the description of Felton that has a grudge against house Garess? Was there a man like this IN house Garess? If he heard my father's stories he would have had to be quite young while I was still there. I left after my father died, almost ten years ago. Hmmm...

The only skill check I can think of for that would be a Knowledge (Nobility) check, unless there is such a thing as a memory roll - maybe an INT check?

Knowledge (Nobility): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

If you want an INT check instead just use that roll - my INT bonus is +3. If you want to roll my Sense Motive I am currently at +0 because of my trait. And for the record, from now on Numalar will pay a lot closer attention to Jon Felton.

After a moment Numalar seems to settle and regains his composure. Now that there is some sign that Jon Felton is more than he appears, Numalar speaks calmly and rationally. "Yes, Jon Felton, I am surprised. We are a long way from the Golushkin Mountains." Numalar rubs his chin in thought.

"But if you know who I am, then you know that my family was royalty long before we met Duke Garess. I can recite my lineage for more than a hundred generations. Duke Garess showed us kindness and hospitality, but he did not make us who we are. He certainly didn't make us 'noble'; in fact, he offered us no title at all. And I didn't 'grow up' in his house; I was in my thirties when we arrived there. Still, that would have been before you were born."

"Fire? Of course I fight with fire. The blood of dragons runs in my family. Certainly nobody likes being burned. But cowardly? You did arrive with a bow in your hand - such a weapon lets you kill a man from hiding a hundred yards away; my flame cannot do the same."

"And the bleaching? If you know of that, then you know gnomes; many do not, in these parts. But after a day like today? No, the bleaching is a long way off for me yet. And for the record, I am the last of the Auritonius line. When I die, I take that name with me."

Well, I can hardly argue with a 27!

Numalar turns around, and whispers to Bella.

"Of course, you are right, Lady Bella. But I suspect that Mister Felton feels he has done no wrong. He cannot be brought to the path of light if he feels justified in the path that he was on before. But words are cheap - we must show him through deeds that there is a better way. In his picture of the world, the strong take from the weak with no ill consequences to themselves. He must see that life does not need to be that way."

"Besides, he seems to have some kind of grudge against House Garess, and thus also against me, since House Garess was my family's patron for a long while. Perhaps later, when things have calmed down, you might plumb him as to his history and the origin of his grudge. I am not beholden to House Garess, but I count several of its members as friends, and bear the rest no ill will. So I am curious now as to what his quarrel is with them. Perhaps it is e'en something that we might be able to resolve."

I suspect that there is a lot more chance for RP here with Jon Felton as he turns out to be more than just a lackey. But I'm guessing that KDM wants to move on for now. :)

Jon Felton is a tall man as well, though standing a few inches short of Oleg. He is stout of body but also moves with a fluid grace. He appears to be somewhere in his mid-to-late twenties but it is difficult to determine more than that.

As he watches Felton move away to secure the cart, Numalar tries to recall anything he can about his family but he comes up with nothing. He can't remember any Felton family name associated with any of the noble houses of Brevoy or anyone else for that matter. A spark of recollection pops into mind however when Felton clasps his fist over his heart and bows to Oleg. Although that was a symbol of respect and servitude across many lands, there were certain guards of House Lebeda that clasp their hands in a certain configuration instead of just a fist. Felton makes that sign as he bows to Oleg.

You have 5 hours of daylight left. You can search for the horses if you wish. There are 5 horses. One hour of searching grants you a Survival check at DC 13 to find at least one of the horses. "What were you before Sarenrae called you?"

The only one's who can use Survival to follow tracks are Celyne and Zokon since you have to be trained in Survival in order to follow tracks. So, you are split up into two groups: Celyne and Fronar in one, Numalar, Valeska, and Zokon in the other. Can't Take 10 because you can only re-try once in an hour of searching, you don't have all the time just to keep "re-rolling" until successful. Also, being untrained I'm going to say no to Aid Another.

Two groups set out from Oleg's Trading Post in search of the frightened and scattered horses. Felton and Bella stay behind to see to burial of the bandit bodies while Oleg continues his repair work and Svetlana does her daily chores and prepares for the evening meal.

Celyne and Fronar, along with Luna, head southeast at first where after an hour they find two of the horses. After some coaxing, the offer of food, and Celyne sending Luna away over a few hills, they are able to get close enough to the horses to secure their reins.

Numalar, Valeska, and Zokon head northwest after the two horses that Bren tried to make his escape on. After an hour they have no success however and turn toward a more southerly direction.

After picking up a faint trail, Celyne and Fronar manage to come upon another pair of the horses in their searching. Having the other horses with them and Luna out of sight makes securing these a bit easier.

The second or third hour of searching turns up no sight of their quarry for Numalar, Valeska, and Zokon.

It isn't long however before Celyne and Fronar have found and secured the last of the scattered horses. With all five of them in tow, the pair head back north to Oleg's.

Having no idea that the animals have already been found the trio of Numalar, Valeska, and Zokon continue searching. Zokon points out a number of interesting tracks to the group, all kinds of wildlife and game, in addition to other more monstrous tracks. At one point he even believes that he finds a week old or longer dragon track. As the day begins to wain, the trio is all but decided to head back to Oleg's before nightfall when they pass by a small cluster of trees.

They are all surprised by a ferocious growl and the flash of a very large black shape leaping out of the wood. Before anyone can act, Numalar feels searing hot pain in his shoulder as the long teeth of a worg bite into him. He spins through the air as the force of the creature's leap pulls him out of the saddle on Gertrude and with a snap of its neck throws him ten feet away from where it lands. Valeska and Zokon look on in shock at the very large, wolf-like creature that turns to look at them with evil, intelligent eyes. The worg prepares to attack once more.

Random encounter for you guys. I'll have the stats for the worg at the top of the screen. Numalar took 5 points of damage. Numalar and Valeska are up in round 1.

"I suppose none of us were at some point what we are today," Felton muses as he continues to dig. The man works hard digging the graves in the hard soil; working to dig them deep enough that animals won't find and dig them up.

"What were you before Sarenrae called you?"

Bella speaks as she continues to dig. It is clear that she is used to hard work.

"I was raised as an orphan in a small church of Iomedae, more like a monastery really. We were always taught that evil, be it necromancers or barbarians, must be destroyed without mercy. However, my blood is the same as the barbarians and I was treated as lesser. It wasn't until much later that I found the Everlight who accepted me regardless of my heritage."

"The life of an orphan is never easy," says Felton as he pauses in his digging to catch his breath. "I am sorry that yours was compounded by being treated as a lesser by those sought to protect and instruct you. The Inheritor can be a harsh taskmaster, from what I understand of her church. You seem much better suited to The Dawnflower, if you don't mind me saying."

Felton assist Bella in climbing out of the last of the graves. "I think we all of these are ready now," he says as they make it back up the level ground. "Let us put the bodies away and cover them, we should just be able to finish before nigthfall."

He then moves over to lift the first of the bandits and drops it into the center of the first grave. With Bella's help he will go ahead and lay all the bodies in the grave and then taking up the shovel, move to cover them.

As Jon covers the bodies with dirt, Bella prays for them.

"Say not in grief that they are no more but say in thankfulness that they were.
A death is not the extinguishing of a light, but the putting out of the lamp because the dawn has come."

I take no credit for that line, but I don't know who wrote it.

Good thing I got Celyne to heal me! I'd be dead now otherwise.

Numalar shrieks in a rather unmanly way as he is thrown through the air. He lands in a patch of mud and snow with a splat. "What the-! Miserable Cur! Who let you off your leash?" Numalar growls as he stands up weakly. Move action to stand up.

Numalar might recognize it with Knowledge (Arcana); I have a +7

If Numalar Recognizes it:
"Macrathane's Codpiece! That's a Worg!" (Insert DM provided info here)

If Numalar Doesn't Recognize it:
"Macrathane's Codpiece! That's a Slime-Hound! Beware! They shoot slime from their nose and if it hits you you fall in love with them and are under their power!" At least it's not a Face-Eater! :)

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to go before Valeska or after so I'll post two possible actions.

If Numalar Goes First:
Numalar reaches out his hand and it becomes shrouded in flame. He then hurls the flame towards the Worg. Using SLA produce flame

Produce Flame hit and damage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 191d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Numalar then levels his spear in anticipation of getting rushed again by the Worg.

If Numalar Goes After Valeska:
Numalar levels his spear and approaches the Worg. 5-foot step. Valeska said she was circling around so I assume she is now close to me. I will step up so I am behind her and a bit to one side. The Worg is now in melee so my produce flame is unlikely to hit. Numalar thrusts with his longspear, trying to distract the Worg.

Aid Another to improve Valeska's AC, DC 10: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3 Well that won't do much either :(

Either Way I will use windy escape if I am hit.

Numalar goes first because he has higher initiative mod. Sorry about not being clear.

No worries! Produce flame it is then. FYI Numalar will not bother with a 5' step, so the map is good for Zokon's turn.

elsewhere...

"Hey Celyne. Since we found the horses, what do you think Numalar, Valeska, and Zokon are up to?"

Although much more comfortable with his bow, Zokon decides the tactical advantage of being able to surround the worg along with Valeska to be the wiser choice. Drawing his longsword he moves closer to the worg and opposite of Valeska's attack position.

Zokon longsword att: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Zokon dmg: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Despite the intelligent look in the eyes of worg, the Slayer attacks with the same emotionless resolve he does in dispatching any other non-intelligent prey. His longsword opens a deep cut in the flank of the beast, opposite the side that was singed by Numalar's fire.

"I only wanted the gnome," speaks the worg, surprising everyone, "but now I will taste the blood of you all!"

The quick and agile beast then lunges to bite at Zokon, hoping to open up a way of escape. Zokon proves just as nimble on his feet as he dodges the slashing and deadly teeth of the beast.

Worg attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

I think Zokon is still out so I went ahead and posted for him. Numlar is up, then Valeska in round 2. The worg is pretty wounded at this point.

"Nice words," replies Felton, "though I don't think they deserved them but then again, I guess that's the point of them, right?"

As the pair stand over the fresh graves, their shadows stretch out long before them getting closer to being absorbed by the growing darkness.

"Well, we'd probably better get back."

Felton takes the shovels and tosses them into the cart. With Bella walking alongside him, the pair make their way back toward the eastern wall and the gate. As they draw closer Celyne and Fronar make their way around the southern wall with the five renegade horses in tow.

"Looks like that will be one less thing to worry about," Felton comments as he holds the gate open for Bella and the others.

"Well I'm afraid Gnome is not on the menu tonight!"

Numalar's hand is still burning; he hauls back and casts flame again. This time the fire on his hand goes out as it darts towards the worg.

My chance to hit is not that good now (-4 because he is engaged in melee) but I might as well use it as I have the one bolt remaining. Numalar is not moving.

Produce Flame Attack and Damage: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 4 = 111d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The bolt flies past the Worg's head and vanishes into the air. "Drat! Well, Mister Worg, you still are going to pay." Numalar levels his spear again in case the Worg rushes him.

You could also charge the worg, as a melee touch attack.

Valeska hesitates as the thing speaks. The stuff of faery tales.

I was going to add but the forum wouldn't allow me to post

Zokon studies the form of the Worg, it's size, weight, how it's quadruped stance affects it's mobility, the shaggyness of it's pelt and the muscles that give it movement. More appraised of the capabilities of the creature Zokon makes his attack

Definitely not happy having two opponents on each flank, the worg decides to move forward next to Zokon and get some revenge for the cut the man just gave him. Perhaps driven by desperation, the creature is more effective with its attack and opens a deep gash in Zokon's left leg. The worg also jerks its head as it pushes its weight against Zokon. The effort results in knocking the slayer to the ground.

worg bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Worg's have the Trip ability when they bite. I'm assuming that they don't have to make another separate attack roll for the trip but use that one roll to beat the opponent CMD. Let me know if I'm wrong about that. Either way, Zokon takes 10 points damage from the bite.

usually requires a separate cmb roll to trip after the attack

Ok, thanks, not sure why I was getting confused on that. Just something about the way the animal Trip feat was worded as being in addition to the normal attack. Anyway, I'll make separate roll.

Worg trip attempt:

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Ha! Ok, so no trip, ignore that part above. Zokon is still on his nimble feet and can commence with finishing the worg off, assuming there is anything left after Numalara and Valeska have a go.
