Game Master RPGGGM

With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

How dark is it right now? You said it was getting dark and stormy. Do the humans need the light from my "produce flame" torch? Or will they still be able to see if I throw it?

Cyrielle goes before me, but, when it is my turn...

Round 1
Numalar runs around to the south of the spider, and lifts his burning hand high. Moving to point A on the map unless Cyrielle somehow is between point A and the spider, in which case I move to point B.

"I do not like the look of this one," Numalar growls. "By the Blade of Shindorlai! We will have to put it down quickly!"

Two possible actions, depending on the answer to my first question.

Option 1: If people can still see well enough without my produce flame that the spider will not have concealment
With a grunt, Numalar hurls the flames in his hand at the spider.

Produce flame vs Touch AC, & damage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Not sure if that's a hit

Option 2: If people need my produce flame to see the spider without concealment

Numalar quickly pops something in his mouth. He grits his teeth, and shouts "Qa' Quv!" A broad tongue of flame roars from his mouth.

Burning Hands using saltpeter DC 16 Reflex: 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3) + 3 = 7

He coughs, almost to the point of retching, but stands up, trembling and pale.

Either way...

"Hope you liked that you misbegotten son of a bundle of sticks!" Numalar levels the spear towards the spider.

Spear is held to make an AoO against the spider if it closes. I will also use windy escape if the spider bites me.

Posh comes along for the ride, unless he really, really doesn't want to.

Note for next round. You'll need to pass a Handle Animal check DC 12 to get any closer to the spider. Eloi's mama didn't raise no glue head--he's not the typical cavalier combat-trained mount. That check will cost you a move action.

Also note, (and I'm sure you did, seeing how you moved) that having Poshment on board means that Eloi is at a Medium load and only moves 35 ft instead of 50 ft. Technically you can hold your action until Posh goes to see if Posh wants to dismount (he can't quickly do it from a Medium mount). It won't affect initiative in relation to the spider. Otherwise you could shove him off (a standard combat maneuver against a flat-footed smaller foe). Either way I'm always up for a bit of comedy with my drama. ;)

The sky overhead is slate grey but there's sunlight along the horizon casting everything in a that typical summer thunderhead lighting (the very same lighting found in any given Zach Snyder movie. For Sparta!). Color seems muted, but everything is very distinct. Everyone can see normally.

Alas, the flame goes wide. It's light reflecting in the ten black orbs that make up the creature's eyes.

If its touch AC is 14 or more then its DEX is at least 20 and its reflex save is likely pretty decent also, so it's probably just as well that I didn't use burning hands.

"Aah, blast this rain. I'll try to get around to the other side! Maybe I can distract it!"

Fronar, that was meant for you (or maybe for Luna). Once you are in position I will move to 10 feet and go total defense. I will threaten with my longspear to allow a flank and hope my spell will protect me from any attacks. That's the plan anyway.

BTW, Cyrielle hasn't spoken up, but her archetype doesn't have the mount class feature. Eloi is just a regular horse. Not sure if that was what you meant earlier.

The spider takes no heed of Poshment's tale of Ser Lakwitz of Jam and his squire/personal manservant Ramon's heroic quest to defeat the Nightmare Prince who, as it turned out, was actually a specialty cheese shop on the outskirts of Brevoy. It barrels forward kicking up the earth in its wake as it bears down on Luna.

She roars and returns the spider's fury. Biting into its armored side, but not finding any purchase with her claws.

Um... you don't have produce flame. In fact, it's not even a cleric/oracle spell. You would need some kind of magic item to cast it.

Edit: Yeah, you seem to have a lot of characters. :)

Edit #2: If you're not sure what to do, maybe you could pull the horse back from the spider.

Well, that could have gone a lot worse. Shame to lose those horses, but they did act as a meatshield.

Numalar looks over at the remains of Fronar's horse. Is the horse dead or just dying? If it is not quite dead perhaps someone with heal can try to stabilize it.

"That's not a fate I'd wish on anyone, but the old gal's sacrifice did save us from the spider's fangs."

Numalar looks up, as if noticing Pushment and Cyrielle for the first time. He pulls out a monocle, polishes it, and puts it in his eye, and peers at the newcomers.

"Greetings strangers; your arrival was well-timed. And good sir," Numalar nods at Poshment. "I'm afraid I didn't catch the punchline of your joke. Any chance you could repeat it?"

Generally speaking, ammunition that hits its target is destroyed or rendered useless, while ammunition that misses has a 50% chance of being destroyed or lost.

Think of it as a testament to how good of a shot you are.

Celyne wrote:

Usually without magic (and perhaps this was the 3.5 version) you need a heal check to determine the state of a character's health (alive, dying, poisoned, plague-ridden, drugged, merely playing dead, etc...). Basically you had to make a diagnosis and normally that is an up close and personal thing (feeling for a pulse, holding a mirror to someone's mouth etc...) but could be done at range with difficulty. Depending on the circumstances the mechanics are basically the same as those for applying first aid. You could certainly use healing magic regardless and hope the patient stirs. This will in the future be how we handle the heal skill.

In this case though your patient is down a twenty-foot deep hole in the ground marked with an X on the map.

Celyne races over to the spider's burrow (a twenty foot deep pit lined with tacky webbing--a flap of turf hinged and held together with more webbing lies open). At the bottom, amid the bones and dessicated remains of previous meals she finds her friends' bloodied mounts. Both lie still.

How would you like to proceed?

One of the orbs drifts down into the pit, illuminating it. The others spread out over the battlefield, thirty feet apart.

"I will go down in the pit to help Zokon. We should check the other pits too; these monsters may have waylaid other travelers before us, and their valuables might still be here. But the storm is coming; we will have to work fast."

The bottom of the burrow (roughly 10' in diameter x 25' deep) is buried (waist-deep on Numalar) in the cobwebby remains of the spider's previous meals. The dried remains of birds, rabbits, goats,
and deer antlers, some of which is woven into the walls, make the hole seem like some mad taxidermist's cast-off pit.

With some effort, Zokon and Numalar extricate the saddlebags from the dead horses.

Fronar keeps a watch above with his bow.

A roll thunder spawned by distant lightning vibrates some of the lair's webs like plucked harp strings.

The light at the bottom of the pit is dim. What's everyone doing?

Which doesn't mean hearing sounds wouldn't be creepy... Also, I'm thinking it'll be a swarm. What do you guys think? Going to get a spider swarm?

A little busy to post right now but I will later. In the meantime, is this a check to see if I am fooled by the ghost sound? If so, am I?

Perception DC 15:
Looking about for the source of the voice your eyes spot a dead human hand shrouded in webbing clutching a bit of rolled cloth.

Zokon takes the cloth and says a quiet prayer for the unfortunate victim.

Getting more and more unsettled by the giant spiders and webs and gah! As time goes by.

I'm going for 'fierce' here people--fierce! | The Trading Post | Tactical Map | Region |

Down amid the web Zokon finds what was once a young woman, poisoned and drained dry perhaps a month or so past. It takes some doing to extricate the cloth from her hand and in doing so some of the webs fall away revealing leather armor and a sheath still holding a shiny short sword. Around her neck (you dare not look much higher for her terrible countenance--all teeth and empty eye sockets partially hidden behind a web veil) the glint of metal, a necklace you have seen before--silver, crudely bent and beat into the shape of stag's head.

The cloth bears a simple charcoal drawing of a black claw-shaped dead tree atop an hump meant to be a hill, an “X” in blood scrawled by tree's roots. You can make out a line that might be the Shrike River and a cloudy bit that might be the northeastern Narlmarches.

Knowledge (geography) DC 15:
The map seems to point to a bit on your overall map (taken from earlier surveys of the area going back centuries) that's about 20 miles southwest of your current position (remember the big map provided is cocked to one side and north is in the top left corner)

Well I guess I'm not fooled by the ghost sound.

Numalar frowns. "Well, what do you know, a talking hand."

Numalar looks around the pit, under the flickering illumination of the magical light. Is this something triggered here? Or is it just some prank?

Casting detect magic and looking around for a minute. Numalar hasn't realized that Poshment is the source of the spell, but I assume with detect magic it would be possible to use Knowledge (Arcana) to figure out where the spell came from (as identifying an aura). Otherwise Numalar might assume something in the pit is the source of the magic.
Knowledge (Arcana) DC 15: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Nope, Numalar doesn't realize that the ghost sound comes from Poshment.

"Give me a moment, good Zokon. Perhaps one of these items is the source of the strange sound." Numalar makes a few gestures, then starts to examine the items one by one.

Cyrielle continues to poke away at the strands of webbing and, after a few moments of it, decides there's nothing else worth looking for. "Alright, you lot up there. I'm ready to come back up. We'll do proper introductions once we're moving, but there's a storm to race right now." She begins climbing the ladder, sword shoved back into her scabbard.

Numalar follows Zokon out of the hole. He looks up at the sky leerily.

"We're going to get a mite wet, that's for certain. I don't recall seeing any sign of shelter since we were at Bokken's. The safest thing is probably to press on to Oleg's in the rain; I don't think we are too far.

"But we should see if we can determine the source of the magic sounds. Perhaps a quick look in the smaller holes the other spiders came out of?"

Numalar heads over towards the other spider holes and looks in, escorted by his four glowing dancing lights.

Looking for anything interesting, including treasure. Keeping my detect magic going.

The other spider pits are significantly less interesting (though no less gruesome) than the large one, and soon, much wetter.
