Uklod's prayers are heard; the spirit flickers and shrieks under the light of Uklod's spell. Although, it glows a little less brightly but glow it does as its fiery tongue lashes out from between the bars that emulate a face.
Ranged Touch against Uklod 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Fire damage 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 1) = 9

After Ingrid mentionned the presence of a haunt, everything went too fast for Ioann. Before he could even finish swicthing from the sledge hammer to his sword, Terrance and Uklod had followed the paladin into the room.
As soon as he heard spell casting, Ioann simply droped the sledgehammer and ran into the room with the others. Not knowing what to do, he takes a look around
Perception: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
Are the bones in the fire with the haunt? Is ther a bucket around? What is the water that we see on the map? Is this part of the building falling down?
I did mean bucket!
DM Twilight |
With that perception check I am so tempted to not answer any of your questions or just feed you some random BS but I won't. There are presumably bones in the fire, you can't see them because there is a giant fire monster trying to kill you. Bucker??? I'm guessing you mean bucket? There isn't one in this room but there might be in other rooms. Of course that might mean getting in on another haunt on your own if you go looking for one. Yes, that part of the building is fallen down, and that is a nice lovely lake creeping in on the building.
Ingrid Van der Geist |
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Looking to try to identify the bones herself, Ingrid draws a flask of holy water and hurls it into the fiery face.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
1d6 ⇒ 6 Holy
DM Twilight |
The flames are too strong for Ingrid to see past. Even after dousing them with holy water and watching the flames die down significantly, the spirit that haunts them still burns brightly enough to conceal anything else within the deep furnace.
I also don't know how clear it was made, but there is an iron door on the furnace, the door itself has changed shape to resemble a giant face and mouth via the bars. Through the bars you see fire, but that's it until the fire is out and you can open the doors.

Terrance, Uklod, Ake (delay), Old Ember Maw, Ioann, Ingrid, Ravel
Ioann Vilescu |
Ioann slowly and carefully walks toward the furnace, his face fixed into aa harsh frown. Once there, uses the tip of his sword the door of the furnace wider and then he looks inside of it.
"So, will putting the bones in the water over there be enough?" he asks to Terrance.
Perception to look in furnace: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (8) - 2 = 6
Terrance Foehammer |
Terrance looks over at the deep pond.
Ioann, I am not sure, I would think so, but with what Ravel just did, I am at a bit of a loss if that will work anymore. The worst is that we try and fail.
Terrance Foehammer |
Terrance chuckles a bit.
And then all we have to do is introduce them to each other, and our problems are mutually solving.
Ingrid Van der Geist |
"Can't wait to find out how the others died." Ingrid says shaking her head.
Terrance Foehammer |
Badly, Ingrid, any unneccessary death is a bad way to go Terrance muses a bit sadly.
He then takes a good look around the room.
percept: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
DM Twilight |
Yes, there is the one opening aside from chimneys. It's a long room basically. On the map you'll see it as a blackened area. Yes, you can see outside from where you are.
The huge stone furnace dominates this room. The fire burned away the entire east wall of the room, providing a view of the lake beyond. That same lake has gradually expanded into the room, flooding its eastern half. A plaque above the furnace reads "Ember Maw". There is nothing of value to be found in this room, it appears it's been picked over even more so than other areas, probably because it was easily accessible with the crumbled wall. Most likely before the spirits here grew to such strength.
A perception DC20 will locate the bones in the furnace.
Ioann Vilescu |
With his usual lack of patience, Ioann soon abandons his search for the remains of the prisoner. He goes to get the sledgehammer, which had been left next to the last unlucky door, and walks toward the next door. Midway there he stops and turns toward the others.
"Curious? Bah, your lack of zeal betrays you." he says, taunting them.
Ioann is ready to go on... but I know the casters are in need of rest. So, he won't cause trouble if everyone decides to go back to the Lorrimor estate.
Terrance Foehammer |
Lack of zeal Terrance grumps, I will show you a lack of zeal
He then grabs his warhammer, and stumps his way over to the door Ioann is at.
Willing to push on for 1 more fight

Nope, I have much zeal. Besides, I think that door said something about you being a puny, noodle armed village idiot. You should show it who's the boss!
I have close to full power on spells, but I will follow the party will. Sorry about low posting, work and now a concussion are making thing challenging...
Terrance Foehammer |
There was too many people around the oven, Thats why Terrance didn't try to look in it. He was looking around the room for other things, not the bones.
Ioann Vilescu |
Yay for recovered bones! We can go on bashing doors now!
Ioann, not paying any more attention to the furnace, focuses on Ake's insult and her measly attempt at taking down the door. He smiles, a mean smile, at the later.
"Noodled arm? Bah. You kick like a little pixie..."
Door smashing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Ioann grunts at the door's unwillingness to fall down under his sledgehammer.
Door smashing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
His eyes grow wide and raises his voice in frustration.
"Wraaaw!"
Door smashing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
DM Twilight |
Almost as if laughing at Ioann, the door resists his attempts to break it down until finally he loses his patience and shows it he means business. The door crashes to the ground.
The northeast wall of this room has partially fallen, revealing the dark, murky waters of the pond outside. Moldering training dummies and other similar equipment hint that this room may have once been a training area for the guards. In the northeast part of the room, the floor around a dark, jagged hole is surrounded by black scorch marks.
Ingrid Van der Geist |
"Looks like the work of another firebug." Ingrid says studying the scorchmarks.
Terrance Foehammer |
I suggest that we come back and look into the underground tomorrow, and that we continue to look around this area
Terrance looks around the room to see what he can see.

DM Twilight |
This room was where the fire that doomed Harrowstone
began, as detailed in the Adventure Background. The
fire burned so hot that much of the eastern wing of
the dungeon below collapsed once its wooden supports
failed. The jagged, soot-caked hole in the f loor was once
the location of the lift that connected the two f loors—
the machinery that powered the lift tumbled into the
dungeon below during the fire. It’s a 20-foot drop to area
U1 from this point—the edges of the hole may appear
dangerous but the unstable portions have long since
fallen away, leaving the remaining rim solid enough to
support the weight of numerous creatures. Climbing
down into the room below requires at least two separate
Climb checks—the first a DC 30 check to navigate the
overhang and ceiling of area U1, and then a number of
DC 10 Climb checks to navigate the ruined stone and
timber wall down to the ground 20 feet below. The PCs
can climb down much more safely by first tying a knotted
rope to a nearby wall or fallen timber and then throwing
the rope into the hole (DC 10 Climb check), while hauling
a 20-foot-long ladder up from Ravengro may be an even
safer (although more time-consuming) solution.
Sorry guys, I didn't feel up to paraphrasing that entry to explain what you saw/what was needed. Having a bit of a rough time atm. My brother, who lives with me and I am close to, went into the hospital Saturday night. Things are apparently worse than what they originally thought, and I'm a bit stressed by the news. He should be OK though, we're not looking at imminent death or anything. Just a lot of pain and lifestyle changes.
Terrance, yours and any other perception checks about the area can be answered in the above quote. Nothing to find here, nothing special about the stone.
Ingrid Van der Geist |
"This looks like the room where the fire started." Ingrid says walking in.
Terrance Foehammer |
In which case there should not be much to see, let us push on and clear as much of this floor before moving below
Uklod Oiglus |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Uklod took great care in placing the bones of the spirit into the small pond that was partly ...and quite conveniently... in the room. Releasing his held breath he patted what he could of the ashy soot from his clothes and tried not to think of the source.
Terrance Foehammer |
Concidering that I am at work and cannot access the maps, not sure.
Terrance follows along with the group.
Ioann Vilescu |
Ioann stands silent, still outside of the training room, frustrated that the others are considering leaving the building a second time without having even found the necromancer how raised professor Lorrimor. After a minute or two, he calms down a bit and walks through the group, bumping almost purposefully into Ingrid, before getting to the door accross the room. For a moment, he stares at the wooden gate that lays on his path. Then, he swings the sledge hammer in a large arc and strikes down the door. Switching to his sword, he peers inside, hoping that they might finally have found the property room.
Venting frustration on door: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Uklod dropped the bones? Huh? Also, I agree with the plan, we are almost done with hte first floor.
Terrance Foehammer |
i think that we have about seven rooms left on this floor
Terrance continues to move along behind Ioann
