Some days later

Edric is pleased to see the smoke rising from Oleg's chimney in the distance as they crest a gentle rise. The smoke promises warmth and a hot meal indoors, which have been in short supply the past week. As they journeyed Edric has been keeping a rough map on his slates, trying to plan the best route for a roadway between the homestead and Concord. His small army, while well drilled, need toughening and Edric had just the building project in mind to help with that... The smile that spreads across his face is only partly to do with the prospect of food as he turns to the others.

"Last one to the homestead is a scale-less kobold!

He kicks his horse into a canter and rides off. Ride: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Susan rears back slightly and whinnies, spooked by Edric's antics. "Whoah, girl," Naralesh says, patting the horse's neck, calming her. "Scaleless isn't so bad," he chuckles, maintaining his slow pace. He looks at Gavriil and Vosil, however. "Well come on then! He's getting away!"

It has been a sombre few days since Kaalib and his people left - busy, too. The mine needed close supervision in its initial phases, but the first pit props are now in and Vosil has hopes that it will be a success.

Still, the work was hard and he has felt throughout that they have been engaged in burial, rather than construction: the immuring of Kaalib's hopes for human and kobolds to ally and live at peace together.

He is grateful therefore for Edric bringing some humour to the occasion. He glances sidelong at Naralesh as the elf eggs him on, and raises an eyebrow: "'Getting away?' Please - Edric's a nice enough chap, I suppose, but he rides a horse rather less well than another horse would..." He flashes a grin, before leaning down to whisper some encouragement to his - still - nameless stallion.

Varisian:
"Psst - want to earn a name? Show me what you have, my four-legged friend!"

Ride: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

It doesn't take much; the merest hint of a spur, a twitch of the knees, and he's away, surging like an incoming tide, the wind whistling past, the ground falling away beneath feet and hooves. The Sczarni have traded in horseflesh since time out of mind, and they have learned a trick or two along the way.

Gavriil grins as Edric and Vosil spur their horses onward. He spurs his horse onward after them and says to it over the wind, "I don't like you, and you don't like me. But we really can't let them beat us. You'll be the laughing stock of the stables if they do!"

Ride and Derring Do: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (16) + 7 + (3) = 26

Gavriil spurs his horse on, and even though the others had a head start, he quickly catches up and passes both Edric and Vosil. He yells back over his shoulder, "I'll try to save some radish stew for the rest of you when you get there! EVENTUALLY!"

Heh. Sorry Edric. That dice roll, though - you brought it on yourself! ;)

Also, isn't it great when the dice provide the correct narrative - Panache FTW!

Vosil gives a rueful grin as he arrives into the fort, some distance behind Gavriil. "A daring rider, a wise diplomat - if you aren't careful, the Scoundrel of the Greenbelt is in danger of becoming a useful and productive member of society!"

He greets the Levetons cordially, but leaves it to one of the others to share the good news about the ring they found.

Gavriil slides off his horse just as Vosil pulls up behind him. He pulls an apple from his saddle bags and feeds it to his horse. He gives the horse a pet on the muzzle and says, "Alright, boy, you did good. Once I finally figure out my own name I'll give you one too."

He smirks at Vosil and responds, "We can't have that! You're going to have to put your spies to work spreading rumors of how I haven't changed at all. I do have a reputation to uphold in the hearts of women everywhere after all. Plus, that might make our dear viscountess have to give me," he gives mock gasp, "responsibilities! And I just won't stand for that."

As he and Vosil head towards the main building he calls out, "Oleg! Svetlana! We're home! Come quick! You might be able to see Edric ride in on a dead horse!"

Sorry, Edric, but the dice giveth, the dice taketh away! Great idea, though!

The horns announcing your arrival sound, barely in time before Gavriil streaks inside the gate. Oleg stands on the porch of the main building, sweeping and glowering as usual. Svetlana hangs the washing - fresh sheets and linens - on a line nearby. Nat can be seen working the farm plot outside, and it seems to have nearly doubled in size. There is a small cottage nestled up next to the plot, where a young woman works knitting on the steps. She is with child, and looks up excitedly when the horns sound.

Oleg gives a curt nod - followed by a slightly deeper incline of the head when Talia rides in. Svetlana greets you cheerfully, performing a curtsy for the Countess.

"My Lady!" She cries, "Come in! Come in! I have a fresh pot of moonradish soup on, and a fine hog baking in the pit!"

Guardsmen take your horses, while the smell of roasting boar and stewing moonradishes fills the air.

The smell of Svetlana's cooking sets Naralesh's mouth watering, to say nothing of the little white fox Nora, whose enthusiasm at the prospect of rich food is expressed through an animated series of yips and hops in place. Naralesh dismounts, scooping his familiar up in his arms as he climbs down out of the saddle, and lets her race about on the ground. "Go on," he tells the little animal. "I have something to discuss with Oleg." Nora quickly runs inside and hops up onto a stool, waiting politely to be served.

Naralesh walks over to the proprietor of the trading post and pulls him aside as the others file indoors, and addresses him in a low voice. "You've done much for us since we first came to these lands, and we never forgot the request you made of us. It's taken us a long time, but we found this at last with the help of a dear friend. Is this the ring that was taken so long ago?" Naralesh produces the ring from a secure pouch within his traveling clothes, holding it out for Oleg to take.

Talia stops Apple outside at Nat's farmstead, giving the man as warm a smile as she can muster, having ridden all day. "How's my old steed Noleski doing, Nat? And how are you? Are you going to have a little one scampering about these fields soon?"

Handing Apple's reins off to the farmer, Talia makes her way towards the trading post, surveying the changes that have been made since she was last here, in a time of near defeat, it seemed then, with a third of the privy council having nearly left the fledgling kingdom for good. Briefly, Talia wonders of the rumors that spread from that time, but then pushes her doubt aside - the trading post and the small surrounding community seemed to be prospering, and that was enough to give the Viscountess' wavering confidence a boost. "Nat, please see to Apple and join me at the trading post's kitchen. We are going to be celebrating Svetlana tonight!"

Inside, Talia gives Svetlana a curtsy in return, and then takes the woman's arm, whispering in her ear, at once excited and teasing. "Naralesh brings your husband news even now. Tonight is your night, dear. Relax by the fire, Nat and I will serve the roast pork and soup. And please, point us to your finest liquors. I'm buying." Nodding towards the fire, Talia continues. "But first, take a seat. We have good tidings to report, and an offer for you and Oleg."

Was it a proper thing for a royal to serve a commoner? Gods no, and that was the point. Flashing the woman another smile, Talia makes her way towards the kitchen, where she assumes the soup is simmering.

Passing Edric, Talia nods. I'm sorry you've lost your scales tonight, General. Gavriil has the most annoying habit of pulling small victories out of his backside."

I'd like to buy a proper amount of good-ish alcohol for a celebration, and hopefully ply Svetlana with enough of it that she accepts the Treasurer position. How many gp for that, OGGM?

Need to claim land - looking at the map, we're a bit spread out. We can consolidate by claiming E4, then F4, then D6, with a farm in each. That gives us a substantial-looking domain. We can then push North from there to claim Oleg's (assuming they want to be claimed?).

Edric wants a road to Oleg's and I think that's a good idea, since it would go through E3, connecting our gold mine up to our capital. A road in E3, F2 and F1 would do the trick.

So my suggestion for this turn is claim E4, build Farm in E4, build Road in E3. Again, hold off building stuff in Concord so as not to deplete our treasury too much. If we get a good tax roll this turn we can go on a building spree next turn.

Thoughts?

Vosil winks, and claps Gavriil on the shoulder. "Your secret is safe with me, have no fear."

He watches as the others arrive and are welcomed in turn. He sniffs the air - Winter is most definitely here. "By my reckoning, we are not far from year's end - Kuthona gives way to Abadius in but a day or so and we roll into another year. What say we see in the New Year here, making resolutions for the future in a place that has served us so well these past few months?"

Turn 8 is Abadius - on to 4708 AR!

Edric smiles in response. "I've been trying to get rid of them for weeks - he's done me a favor really!" He takes his horse, breathing heavily, to the stables and gives Nat a companionable nod as he starts brushing his exhausted mount down. "That was a good ride my friend. We can't all be racehorses and I wouldn't deserve you if you were." A small wild apple from his pocket goes a long way to restoring the horses confidence in him. "I'm going to call you 'Steady'. It seems fitting."

Once Steady has been thoroughly brushed down, combed, fed and watered (and had its fatigues washed away with a sneaky use of divine healing). Edric helps Nat with the rest of the horses, happy to have something practical to do.

@Naralesh: Oleg's eyes widen as the elf produces the ring. "I thought for certain we'd a-lost that," he murmurs, eyes tearing, "I thank ye kindly, master elf. Svetlana will be so happy!" He wipes the near-formed tears from his eyes and then the gruff Oleg is back. "Better go show her.." he grumbles and hurries inside.

@Talia: Nat bows low as Talia approaches. "Why Noleski is fine, Milady. As fine a draft horse as could be wished! That is...when Gwen weren't out a-ridin' him!" He blushes. "Aye, milady. Gwen and I were to have a young 'un...soon if I be any judge!" He smiles gratefully at Talia as she takes her leave, bowing again. Nat doesn't do horses anymore - too much farm work!

As you all sit down around the table, Oleg sweeps in, hand held high. "They found it! Svetlana, they found it!" he cries, more animated than you have ever seen him. Noticing you watching, he quickly returns to his 'normal' self. He turns his back so you can't see him as Svetlana sweeps up.

"Found what, Oleg? What is that...oh...OH!" She bursts into tears as he slips it on her finger. She holds her hand up, turning it this way and that, to admire the lost ring. Tears streaming down her face, she moves up to hug Talia, but remembering her station she stops herself. She curtsys, all smiles and tears. She goes back to Oleg, and hugs him for what seems like an eternity. He tries to hide his smile, but the gruff man is not good at faking it.

When Talia mentions dinner, the Levertons interject. "Nonsense." Oleg rumbles. "I won't have it." Svetlana says flatly. "Who heard of such a thing? A Viscountess serving? Lady Talia, you may be the Viscountess of Fairhaven, but Concord is a long way from here. This is our castle," she grins, "and while we may be an outpost on the borders of the wilds, we WILL do things properly!" And she will brook no dissent on the matter, busying herself in the kitchen and essentially ignoring anything except 'official' requests regarding food and drink.

Oleg merely shrugs and begins setting for a large group. He too, will hear none of it.

Ahhh, the pains of rulership. While the point was taken Talia, these simple folk can't imagine for a second being served by you - even out here. It's simply not how things are done. Remember - you are from Brevoyan nobility, so it isn't a stretch to see you as Viscountess. The feudal system is just a part of life. The fact that you all have made any effort at all to treat them like real people is a BIG DEAL to the Levertons. Keep in mind though, that not everyone will see that as an asset. For some, it will be seen as a weakness...Oooooo...foreshadowing!

Gavriil grins ear-to-ear as the Levetons have their joyful reunion with their ring. Well, Svtelana's ring, but Oleg did sneak in some semblance of being a human being rather than a statue in brief flickering moments.

He gives Svetlana a rueful grin at her standing up to Talia and says, "Well, in that case fetch enough cups for everyone! I've got a bottle of whiskey that's been aging well in my travel sack that needs to be shared with everyone while we talk amongst ourselves about the other good news we have for you two."

Once the cups have been brought out he pulls out the bottle and passes it around for it to be poured. After everyone has a glass of whiskey he raises his glass and says, "A toast! To Fairhaven! May it last a thousand years! To our Viscountess! May her wisdom grow to the same height as her beauty! To friends! Both around this table and in our hearts! And to Oleg and Svetlana! May we all find the love as pure as the pearl of her ring as they have!"

He knocks back his glass of whiskey and quickly pours himself another before continuing, "Now! As much as I love the nostalgia of living off the land coming back here gives me, we aren't solely here for pleasure. We have somewhat of a business proposal for the two of you. After recent events, we have come to find ourselves without a treasurer. We the council, and the viscountess herself, have decided that our country cannot leave the position empty. As such, we would like to invite you to come to Concord and stay with us. We would also like your skills in mercantile, Oleg. We would like to appoint you Treasurer."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

Also, I couldn't tell if we had decided on Svetlana or Oleg. If we had chosen Svetlana, just substitute her name for Oleg's at the end there.

LOL! Don't put a nameplate on Edric's door back at Concord, he changes positions faster than the plate can be engraved!

There is a long silence after Gavriil's proposal. Too long. Edging into uncomfortable. Oleg shuffles his feet, while Svetlana furtively looks at him now and again. The longer the silence, the more you realize the news won't be good...

"Ummm..." Oleg murmurs.

Svetlana rescues him. "What my husband is trying to say," she starts softly, looking at the ring on her finger, "is that we must respectfully decline." She looks up, and her face is strained with regret and guilt. It's not that we don't appreciate the offer...we do! But we came out here to be away from the hustle of the city, the drama and gossip, the...I don't know." She folds her hands in her lap, clasping and unclasping them. "We've had this discussion already, he and I. 'What would we do if things changed', and all. We decided it would be better for us to stay here."

She looks up at you. "Thank you. Thank you all sooo much. The offer means more to us than you know. But we are simple folk, and we want to keep it that way." She stands up and rushes into the kitchen, tears in her eyes.

Oleg watches her go. He stares at the kitchen door for few moments before turning back to the table. "I know what yer thinkin'." He says calmly. "But that wasn't my doing. Svetlana is the one who wants to stay here. Me, I would take it, but it's 'our' decision, not 'my' decision, you know?" This is an Oleg you've never seen. Calm. Pensive. His voice becomes distant, as if recalling old memories. "She's sick of it, you know? Sick of the rules and decorum. Even funnier that she insisted Lady Talia not serve us, citing 'doing things proper' and all. She doesn't believe in those rules and societal norms. 'Too restrictive' for a young girl who wants to marry a simple shopkeeper." He trails off.

'Didn't you know?" He stands up and heads for the kitchen. Just before he reaches the door, he turns back. "Svetlana was a Lebeda. Second cousin, I think to Master Darrick, although he doesn't know. Disowned she was, for following her heart." And with that he goes to find his wife.

Much appreciated! But if anyone wants to get their words in, do it now, because I've already moved us back to the game thread. Where are we with the kingdom turn? And on that note, it was typical in medieval times to begin exploration/campaigning/etc in the spring. That gives us three more months of kingdom building before we start adventuring again. Let's get those turns done first, but in the meantime, decide where your next explorations will take you.

As previously discussed, I propose we claim F4 (with a farm): -1 BP to claim the hex, and -4 BP to construct a farm.

We have enough BP to do some construction in Concord - we have a brewery, but nowhere official to drink. Can I suggest a tavern? It will need a house to go with it, but it will also provide a place for travelling merchants etc to stay.

Any and all thoughts welcome. Any thoughts on (appropriate) names for said tavern (assuming we build it) also welcome.

how expensive are roads? Can we start building a road to Oleg's (past the two mines, or with off shoots to them)

That's cool, Dregan - I like!

And yes, we have already started on roads; we have one that goes up to the gold mine (E3). We haven't claimed the hexes that lead to Oleg's so we can't build roads on them yet.

The cost of a road depends on the terrain it's built on - hills cost 3 BP and plains cost 1 BP.

I like Alert Aligator and Stag's End.

I'm actually in favor of naming everything Stag's End, though...

I got: The Highwayman and the Necromancer and The Vulgar Pedler.

Tavern names: I got The Crying Queen's Bar. The Crying Surtova? Or is that too risky?

Turn 9 Continued

On to tax collection - is Barod going to roll for that?

I don't want to roll for you guys. This turn I will but let's nominate someone, or rotate it, or something.

Econ roll: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (17) + 25 = 42

Barod stomps into the council chamber, heavy boots 'gathumping' on the marble floor.

"'Ere's the bloody problem." He growls to no one and everyone. "That lizard fergot ta carry the two!" Then without looking up, he turns and goes back to his little office.

On to the Event Phase! (That is your bailiwick, OGGM)

No event - carry on!

I agree with Dregan!

On to turn 10, and the Stability check.

Ok 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (1) + 24 = 25

OK, we failed the Stability check by more than 5, so that means that unrest increases by 1d4 ⇒ 4.

Thankfully, that doesn't put our Unrest above zero because of other modifiers, but it's not an auspicious start to the turn...

Economy 25
Loyalty 17
Stability 24
Unrest 0
Consumption 0
Treasury 25 BP
Control DC 30

I recommend we claim D6 (costs 1 BP), which gives us a substantial-looking realm; we should build a farm (costs 4 BP).

For Concord, I recommend a Jail (costs 14 BP) since there's clearly been an increase in petty crime; that would give us +2 to Loyalty and Stability, and decrease Unrest by 2.

Thoughts?

Ack - I can't count. We failed the stability check by 5, not by more than 5... Although the result (d4 unrest) is the same.
