Lym Blackhand |
"Good grief," Lym says, shuddering. "I am NOT looking forward to seeing the mother of two such sons. I... I think it may be safe to assume that there are no more of them in the house or barn. Do we search the... the body first, or the buildings?"
Kellen Wrensler |
Kellen does his best to do a temporary patch to his wound while they review the body. He grins at Shalelu's words, but shakes his head at Lym's.
"I'm thinking the opposite on that matter - if this ugly managed to sneak up on us, best we on better guard for any further surprises. That silence actually makes me more nervous than if they were charging us." He pauses for a moment and then adds: "Let's check that barn first is my opinion."
Lym Blackhand |

Lym Blackhand |
"How does an Ogre, even one so malformed as this, get such a trove?" Lym wonders out loud after identifying everything. "This is treasure."
Kellen Wrensler |
"How does an Ogre, even one so malformed as this, get such a trove?"
"If Shalelu's earlier find is any example, I'd guess through spoils from the Black Arrows or some other poor soul they hunted down. The townsfolk made it sound like they've been a bane for years."
At Praxim's suggestion, Kellen nods. "Fair assessment there. If someone's got some healing skills to spare, I'd be much obliged and would pay you if you require it."
Tomaru |
Tomaru taps Kellen a few times with his Wand of Cure Light Wounds
Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Thordak Ironheart |
Was hoping we didn't lose you Thordak. Praxim's been killing everything in sight, but he actually missed once! Figured you wanted to actually fight something.
I know, right?! I'm like, "Hey, maybe I get to hit something this time! Hurry! Hurry! It may still fall for simply just being in the same area as Praxim's bow! ;P
Thordak calms as the ogre falls in a heap. Resting a moment to catch his breath, he turns to the paladin, "Thanks for letting me help this time, elf," he says, grinning wryly before cringing from the pain of the nasty cut he was gifted from the large beast. "If ya got any more of that healing, I could use a bit. And I'm with Kellen, I say we check the barn first as well."
Rhianni Verdani |
"If it would be helpful to scout the barn, I can give you the advantage of invisibility." says Rhianni helpfully, "Although such a ramshackle structure might not need such protection." Smiling she looks at the barn, Knowledge (Engineering) 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 and takes in the building, looking at its strengths and weaknesses. "Best be careful as you go, until we know how sturdy the frame really is."
"Thordak, come here let me tend your wounds." she touches the deep cut with her hand, before taking out a gnarled wooden stick and places it on the dwarf. His wounds close and the warmth from the wand pulls his torn m uscles together, taking away the pain.
Wand of CLW 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Wand of CLW 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Kellen Wrensler |
As his wounds close, Kellen stretches and nods thanks at Tomaru. "Much obliged, neighbor. I think that thing was dull to boot."
At Rhianni's suggestion, Kellen nods and also looks towards the barn. "I wouldn't mind it if you want me to look around, although the young lady (points towards Shalelu)may want to go ahead instead.".
Less concerned about the barn for the moment, he looks around the grounds to see if he see anything else - monstrous or otherwise - could pose a threat to their approach.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Old Guy GM |
The barn maintains an ominous lean in towards towards the house, almost as if it were reaching out for support. The fact that it was built crudely, but solidly, is the only reason it still stands.
There does not appear to be any more threats obvious outside of the structures. The silence is deafening. Not even a breeze is blowing.
Shalelu cocks her head at Kellen's suggestion, then stares out into the open space of the clearing. After a moment, she looks back, her eyes locked on the mutated ogrekin dead on the ground.
Thordak Ironheart |
"Well, it didn't seem like you were here just to carry my bags," the elf replies, totally deadpan, as he studies the decrepit barnyard in more detail.
"Ha! Good one." He grins.
"Thordak, come here let me tend your wounds." she touches the deep cut with her hand, before taking out a gnarled wooden stick and places it on the dwarf. His wounds close and the warmth from the wand pulls his torn m uscles together, taking away the pain.

Stretching his muscles to work out the kinks, "Thanks, lass, I needed that." He nods in gratitude.
"I'm thinking we should stick together on this one..."
"And I'm thinking she's right, folks. You don't want to be caught alone if you just happen to run into a group of 'em. Or if they wind up to happen upon you without you knowing it." He pauses, staring straight ahead into nothing, lost in reverie as he begins to mutter thoughtlessly. "That's what they do, you see. They sneak up on you when you least suspect, and take nearly all your kin. Nearly all." After another pause, he shakes himself free from his mental prison before, "Right, um, let's go."
Praxim |
"Thordak, will you take point? Shalelu and I can each take a wing, Rhianni and Lym in the centre, and Kellen and Tomaru to guard our rear?"

Kind of like that....fingers crossed that my diagram translates well when I hit post...
Kellen Wrensler |
Kellen nods at Shalelu and Praxim's suggestions and merely adds: "Workable," before getting fully prepared with his weapons. Once the others have started moving, he takes a up a point behind and between Praxim and Rhinanni and scans the area.
Thordak Ironheart |
Thordak nods to the elf, moving up front and heading toward the barn, hoping to spot any possible ogres before they are spotted themselves.
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Lym Blackhand |
"Let's go, then," Lym says. "I suppose my eyesight might be of help -- but I would prefer not to stand in the front line. I am... not as sturdy as the rest of you."
Old Guy GM |
The path to the barn is well trodden, but by what, it isn't really clear. You reach the main doors of it without anything untoward occurring. The house remains silent.
The barn doors are huge, and crudely made. The large timbers were hand-hewn, fastened together with iron nails. They are closed, and from your vantage point, it appears they would swing inward. The hinges are inside.
Lym Blackhand |
Lym quietly casts Detect Magic, just in case there's another item-bedecked creature hiding in the barn or close to it.
Kellen Wrensler |
It will work just fine, but lifting/shifting/sawing a bar through will be pretty obvious to anyone who (may) be watching. Just want to mention that before you do it, in case there's any other actions people want to do.
OK - appreciate the info. Before we try opening, anyone else have a suggestion? Or should we just be ready to expect an attack and go ahead.
Lym Blackhand |
"Looks like whatever is in there is determined to keep us out," Lym whispers. "And it must be intelligent - or at least intelligent enough to work a bar."
Lym Blackhand |
Lym takes up position - behind Shalelu - and raises her hands in the traditional first stance of evocation. "Ready," she says, with rather less confidence than the Elven Ranger.
Praxim |
Praxim walks back 20 paces (just under 60 feet), fits an arrow to his bowstring, and takes a bead on the door. "Born ready."
He uses his detection cone to scan the building, purposely putting himself at the end of the range so he'll know when the baddies are in striking range of their group.
Rhianni Verdani |
Rhianni gets her scrolls ready to use before she smiles and starts to recite some magical words of power. These words speed her friends reactions and increase their fighting prowess.
Ready casting haste
Kellen Wrensler |
Once every one is ready, Kellen faces the barn doors and points to the left side, adding: "I'll be moving to this side once the doors are open." He takes a potion and quietly disappears from all sight. The doors seem move of their own accord as he works the bar free. He tenses to jump should something come barreling out at the doors' opening.
Invisibility in effect
Thordak Ironheart |
His longaxe in hand, Thordak stands to the side of the opening so the others have a clear shot at anything that comes out.
