Your gear is available at the side gate of the Mayor's villa. Suddenly, after all you have been through, you are alone with your new companions on the streets of Magnimar.

The new guys get a good scanning from Praxim.

Once they're alone, Praxim, annoyed, turns to the others. "So when exactly did we become errand boys for Lord-Mayor Haldmeer Chubby-ass? And who exactly are our two new babysitters?"

Hello all. Thanks for letting me join up. So...getting off on the odd foot here, but:

Are you asking this in front the new guys? Also - how overt is the "scanning" - noticeable or not?

Thordak -- a typical short, well-bearded, tan-skinned dwarf who looks far stockier than your average dwarf, and also armed and armored to the hilt -- looks around wondering if the elf is looking for someone. He points to himself questioningly, "Who? Me? I don't think so, lad," he answers innocently. "At least, that's not what I've been told anyway." He shrugs. "Actually, I was on me way to Sandpoint and stopped here for a rest. One thing led to another and I found myself here. Once I was given the news on Turtleback Ferry, I had no issues with wantin' to investigate it. Especially with ogres and their kin involved the way they are. The Mayor is right... they're actin' oddly and I don't like it. And I hate 'em. I hate 'em all. And I wanna kill 'em," he pauses, glancing at each of them before finishing with, "All of 'em." He says with nothing even close to concern in his voice as he appears to be staring off into the distance.

Praxim's comments were for all to hear. The "scanning" probably just looks like he's being stared, maybe even glared, at.

Have no fear about not getting accepted. Praxim is probably the gruff eat, surliest, unfriendliest paladin I've ever played, and he doesn't like change very much. He also doesn't like people telling him what to do, like this mayor sending him off like an errand boy, so he's just going to take it out on you two for awhile. However, he's also the type to quickly recognize and accept worthy allies.

OK - thanks for clarification. More a matter of just wanting to know mechanics of setup (like using spoiler for private vs. public convo, etc.)

"You're impossible."

Said before I left the Lord-Mayor's office.
"Turtleback Ferry you say?" He looks meaningfully at the members of his group. "I understand it is beautiful this time of year. I think we would be only too happy to perform this duty for you, lord-mayor." Tomaru addresses Brother Pietr next. "If you have some time, we would like to confer with you on our travel plans." Tomaru then leaves the lord-mayors office. He waits for Brother Pietr there or returns to their rooms as Brother Pietr directs.

Tall and lean, the dark-haired man has remained quiet through-out the exchange - but his grey eyes gives each person an assessing scan.

At Praxim's introductions and offer of coin, he looks at the bag but doesn't take it. "Well good day to you all. Name's Kellen, and I didn't come here for your coin. Same can be said that I don't know anything about killing lamias or ogres or any other such beasts. My currency in this deal is a favor I owed the City Watch to help me find you folks and now that payments due. Don't blame you for not trusting me, but I'm here to help with whatever takes us to Fort Rannick or Turtleback Ferry."

He pauses for a moment, and then continues - his tone more serious: "There's some questions I have concerning matters around Sandpoint and your efforts up there, but given the current mood - I suppose it can keep for now." With that, he lapses back into a quiet tone and paces along with the rest of the group.

Brother Pietre does not show himself to you immediately.

Where to? The tavern where you were staying? The Church of Iomedae? Stay in the street in the Alabaster District until picked up for vagrancy? Essentially you have a short time to: buy/sell stuff, get directions, arrange travel, etc.

He pauses and looks at you. "As for Variel Ironbriar and his foul cult, Justice has been served. The Inheritor smiles upon you."

Brother Pietre takes a large jar and pours wine for each of you. Sipping at his, he asks "Now, how my I help you further?"

Kellen follows along - looking a touch nervous at finding accommodations in a temple, but otherwise listening in on the conversation.

When Praxim presents the note, he does ask:"May I look at it?" - pointing to the message.

The priest sighs. "Any notes I made were in the margins of that journal. Rest assured, it has all of the information needed to put Ironbriar on the executioner's block, had he survived. What it does not explain is why his cult of murderers carved that seven-pointed star on its victims."

He takes the note from Praxim and begins to read it. As he does, his eyes grow wide. "But this does, I think," he says after he is done. "Tell me. Do you know what this symbol is?"

You know they are holdings of Magnimar, established to spite the city of Korvosa, its rival.

"Close enough," Brother Pietre replies to Lym. "To be specific, it is called the Sihedron Rune, but you have all of the rest correct. Legends say that each of the seven sins was championed by a being of great power. A Runelord, if you will." He pauses, re-reading the note. "What, exactly, is meant by 'for our Lord's rise'? Surely not to bring back a creature of ancient Thassilon? That cannot be possible. It has been ten thousand years since the Thassilonian Empire covered this land."

He slowly shakes his head. "Whatever you have caught yourselves up in, it surely cannot be an event of such calamity. No. I believe there is someone trying to reach a great and ancient power, and is willing to go to vile lengths to get it. This Xanesha, this lamia you slew is obviously a part of it, as is the one who wrote this note. Either way, it would appear that the people of Turtleback Ferry and the Black Arrows of Fort Rannick are in danger."

"It would seem that you have been anointed by fate to pursue this matter unto its end." He says. "I cannot force you to go, and neither can 'His Portliness', as you named him. But I can tell you that there is no one else. Should you choose to continue, I will help as I can."

Not to do so would be unconscionable. We will also need supplies to travel - and perhaps a sturdy conveyance."

"Genie in a bottle...," Kellen mumbles. "Could be somebody found something - for good or ill - that they shouldn't have in some hole or mountain cave. The Cyphergate; the Irrespan - they're proof enough that they don't have to be alive to possess power."

"Certainly a lich is a possibility, for they are timeless, but why the harvesting of greedy souls for "our Lord's rise"? A lich would already be arisen, so to speak. And why just greedy souls? Why not lecherous, or gluttonous? I do not know. But...I fear you shall know far more than I about these matters before this is finished." Brother Pietre says with a sigh.

"To your other matters, though, I can be of greater assistance." He walks over to a large bookcase and pulls out a large folded map, which he spreads out onto a table before you. "See here is a map of Varisia."

MAP

He points to the western edge of the map. "Here we are in Magnimar, and you follow the line of the Yondabakari River here," he traces with his finger, "East, then North, and you come to Turtleback Ferry. There are several ways you can get there. On foot, of course, a journey of three weeks or so. Horseback will drop that to two weeks. There is a road that more or less follows the river, but it is lightly patrolled, and often the Mushfens claim parts of it. The third and fastest method is via the river. I can book you passage on barge or merchant vessel perhaps, to get you there within a week." He smiles at each of you. "It is the least I can do to aid your journey."

"As for weapons and other gear you may need, I have enough connections within the city to expedite your requests."

So. Make preparations each of you. Tell me what you are doing to get ready: magic items, gear, funeral arrangements, and the like. Keep in mind you have a full 48 hours thanks to Brother Pietre. Let me know ooc and we will get the trip rollin'. EDIT: Don't forget to sell stuff here. Magnimar is the best place for it.

Thordak ponders all that's been said, questions arising all over the place from within. "Okay, here's a list of what we've got between the lot of you:

1: We've got somebody who wants greedy souls. And apparently only greedy souls.

2: We've got this Star thing that is some sign of power from an age long gone that represents the sin greed. I'm guessing this Thassilon age is the one that's gone.

3: We've also got Brother Pietre telling us that each of these sins was championed by a... Runelord, was it?

4: And now you've got this note speaking of 'our lord's rise'.

So with all that being said, you don't suppose it is one of these Runelord's - as Brother Pietre possibly mentioned and seeing how 'lord' is in the word 'Runelord' - that is coming back to life, do you? One that likes the greed sin, I guess?" He scratches under his beard, wondering.

"If it is something to do with these Runelords, why go to the boonies when you could dig 'em up right here at a bridge relic the size of a mountain? Might explain this lamia harvester you found here. What's in Turtleback or Ft. Rannick?"

Kellen shrugs at the speculation. "Guess we'll find out when we get to this town. Assuming we're taking the river route - unless you folks feel like going via horse?"

Kellen will do a little shopping, but otherwise prepare for the journey and get what materials they'll need for traveling. He does want to ask some questions if the opportunity presents itself to the group.

"The Sihedron Rune represents all the sins in its corrupted form, not just greed," Lym corrects Thordak. "If it is, indeed, a Runelord behind all of this, then logic and the available evidence dictate it would have to be the master of Greed. And if such an individual is not a lich, then... perhaps the greedy souls are the means of his resurrection, or his resuscitation? Greedy souls would correspond to the sin he champions, their energies being most palatable to him. Or so I theorize..."

Lym ponders a bit, then shakes her head at Kellen. "Greed, not stupidity, is the name of the game. The predator does not strike close to home, but goes a distance away so the marks of slaughter will not lead other predators to their doorstep. If nothing else, harvesting away from his home base would allow this Rune Lord to keep his location a secret -- so long as his servants are smart enough to cover their tracks when they deliver. Of course, the possibility exists there is another reason to strike in such far-off locations... Magnimar holds remnants of Thassilonia, which might be significant to a Runelord somehow. Maybe Turtleback Ferry does as well?"

The Half-Orc turns to the priest. "Personally, I favour going by water. Why let the swamp dictate for us when the river is available? But just in case something happens to the ship, why not see to back-up transportation? Let us get some quality mounts for our journey. His Portliness was kind enough to provide us with funds..."

"Just the river. Having horses with us will only slow us down and increase our costs unnecessarily. If we come to an area where we need to travel overland, then we should trust good fortune." Tomaru rubs his holy symbol as he says that.

As everyone goes about the business of getting ready, Kellen offers to buy a meal and drink for all involved before they depart for Turtleback and Ft. Rannick. Assuming they accept, he does have a small spiel to make to them.

"Fore we head out on this business involving ogres and the lord mayor's request, I'd like to see if I can resolve something that's brought me to your company and service. You've gotten a well-earned reputation as heroes up in Sandpoint, and I was hoping you could answer a question (or two) about that."

With that, Kellen presents them with a couple of wanted posters of Orik Vancaskerkin.
"This man's wanted for several murders up in Riddleport, and any family he's got has either fled town or hiding, so tracking him down hasn't been easy. Rumors had him hiding out near Sandpoint among a goblin tribe and some demon they've been involved with. I hear among your deeds was a putting a stop to a bunch of goblins, and I can't help but wonder: did you see him...maybe kill him in the process? Any information on this matter would put me more in your debt and service, if you'll take my word for it."

With this query, the rough-hewn man spreads his hands to finish his speech and open the door for any response to any who have heard him out.

Something a little off the main thread for a sec to establish character building - if you don't mind. Character wouldn't know who was involved in the first adventure or what experience (if any) they had with the guy.

So the river it is. Just post a general "I'm getting a +2 longsword, a master work shield, one cure moderate potion, a bag of peanuts, and a pony...or somesuch. I don't need to approve everything (unless you are going crazy), just want see what everyone is planning on getting. Magnimar is a big trade city, with the Churches help, there will be no issues.

"Fear not about the cost, I can always bring us mounts from the wild herds that follow my people." Rhianni says to Tomaru, "though it may severely reduce my abilities."

"We would not need more than two," Lym tells Rhianni. "A city this size should have carriages for sale, and there is a spell I have my eye on which could be eminently useful to make a carriage more... portable, as it were. Alas, it would not work on horses - but there is another spell I wish to pursue which can conjure a magical mount which can last for several hours. That might serve to pull a carriage as well... Hmm."

GM, would that work? Using a Ghost Wolf to pull a carriage?

Lym looks over the wanted poster and shrugs. "I can not say this man looks familiar to me," she says.

I know Praxim and Rhianni dealt with this man, but Lym never met him.

Re-read the thread, and so editing this...

"We encountered him at Thistletop. We gave him quarter and chance to redeem himself, and he fled at the first opportunity. I have no idea where he ended up, I'm afraid."

I think...

Tomaru looks at the poster and shakes his head no.
Markum and Vuvo may have met him, but Tomaru came after that.

I just read some of those adventures under Thistletop. Orik made his escape. I also noted the interplay of the characters. Markum was a jerk. He was loyal and foolhardy, but a jerk. He and Praxim played off one another pretty well too. There were moments with each character, but those two, I think, shared more of them. Markum would be proud that Praxim's no longer the same pansey elf that he first met.
