Old Guy GM |
I'm misunderstanding the rounds here.
Pre-Combat: Thordak opens door. There is a fog there. Tomaru clears fog.
Round 1: Room is re-fogged. Tomaru clears fog again.
Round 2: ??? Tomaru can act again? Also please disregard that Summon Monster from post above. I decided to go with the staff instead.
You have it right. In Round 2, Mokmurian goes first, then the PCs go. I was just waiting for a clarification on where Aurora was before starting Round 2.
Old Guy GM |
ROUND TWO:
"I am not an ogre, little flea. I am the chosen of Karzoug, Lord of Greed. And I will be the last thing you see..." Mokmurian's deep voice murmurs the words of a powerful spell. A shimmering wall of force appears across the opening to the room.
Trapping Aurora inside his lair with him.
He casts another spell, three bolts of fire arc from his outstretched hand toward Aurora.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (18) + 21 = 39 mirror image: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Pop!
ranged touch: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (7) + 21 = 28 mirror image: 1d4 ⇒ 4 Pop!
ranged touch: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (19) + 21 = 40 mirror image: 1d3 ⇒ 2 Pop!
Three of Aurora's mirror images disappear as the quickened Scorching Ray hits her. Down to 2...
You guys are up. The wall of force is drawn in. Everyone except Aurora is blocked from the room by the wall. Ready, go!
Lym Blackhand |
With a blast of light and a high-pitched chittering, a dire bat with golden fur pops onto the material plane -- but on the wrong side of the wall, together with the party members also stuck there.
"Tomaru!" Lym says as she floats over to the Cleric. "That's a wall of force -- we can't waste time breaking it, we need you to teleport us to the other side, quickly!"
Lym waits until she, Praxim, Thordak and Tomaru (and maybe the bat as well) arrive on the other side of the wall, and then casts a spell directly on Mokmurian.
Targeted Greater dispel magic, good for dispelling three spells at my current level. Dispel checks: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22, 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 and 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28.
The dire bat launches itself at Mokmurian, high voice chittering a celestial challenge as it bears down on the evil wizard.
Dire bat moves 80 ft. closer to Mokmurian, hopefully drawing his attention away from us.
Tomaru |
*****EDIT*****
"As you wish, my love. Be ready to defend us against his next spell." Tomaru, realizing that his Teleport would not be able to get them all in, steps forward and taps the Staff of Heaven and Earth against the wall causing the wall to open up a path into the room. This will hopefully allow everyone to get inside.
Lym Blackhand |
"Defend....? Ah. Well," Lym says, hesitantly. "Uh, yes. But I'd like to do a little harm first, if you don't mind."
I've got an Enervation prepped with this Guy's name on it! :p
Praxim |
Now on the right side of the wall, Praxim quickly casts the spell fire of judgment, and unleashes more arrows.
Attack: 1d20 + 20 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 20 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 = 30
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + 2d6 + 12 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + (4, 4) + 12 + (2, 1) = 46
Attack: 1d20 + 20 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 20 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + 2d6 + 12 + 2d6 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + (2, 1) + 12 + (2, 2) = 43
Attack: 1d20 + 15 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + 2d6 + 12 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 8 + 2 + (4, 3) + 12 + (1, 6) = 46
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 2 - 4 = 14
Mokmurian is also surrounded by flames of positive energy. They will inflict 1d6 ⇒ 3 damage at the start of his turn and 1d6 ⇒ 2 if he does something that doesn't target Praxim. He gets a Will save DC 17 to limit its duration to one round.
Lym Blackhand |
Why wouldn't it be able to get us all across? One character per three character levels. You can 'port four creatures.
Old Guy GM |
Tomaru opens up a small tunnel to bypass the wall of force, and you surge through...only to find it doesn't. Praxim, in the lead, runs smack into the force wall. Mokmurian is no fool. He has extended the wall beyond just the opening into the room.
Tomaru's action is taken. The rest may do something different as necessary. But remember that if you moved to get through Tomaru's tunnel, you have limited actions remaining. Thordak still needs to act in ROUND ONE, but I was assuming he was waiting for Tomaru as stated. Now, he could act in Rounds One and Two, but he is still outside the force wall.
Before you ask, I couldn't get the wall and Aurora to stack in the right order, so I had to put the wall where it was.
Lym Blackhand |
Spellcraft 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (4) + 21 = 25. Can I retroactively switch that dire bat for 1d3 ⇒ 1 small earth elementals? I can have them tunnel down and under the wall.
"Use teleportation! Just get as many of us through as you can! We need to bypass it through the aether, we can't do it in matter!" Lym urges Tomaru.
There's nothing else I CAN do. I don't have the spells to break this thing, and I didn't have a ready action to counterspell. @_@
Tomaru |
[ooc]I get four medium size creatures. The dire bat is large. It takes two slots to teleport it. I was trying to get everyone through. I'll teleport us next turn for sure.
Aurora Ulfurdottir |
Please do accept my apologies, common as a second language and all that. There doesn't seem to be a word that translates as 'overgrown ogre with delusions of grandeur', is there such a word in the giant tongue or is it limited to monosyllables?
Aurora sees the force wall preventing her friends from coming in.
Thank you, I'd rather they didn't get hurt, caught up in what I'm going to do to you.
casting spell resistance, Aurora now has SR26. Swift for burning arc
burning src: 10d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 2, 6, 2, 4, 4, 6, 5) + 10 = 52 ref dc 21 for half
Thordak Ironheart |
Yep, I was delaying. Will continue to do so until we can get in there and fight. He really can't do anything until then.
As the force wall blocks them out, Thordak's eyes go wide in fear as he sees Aurora trapped within. "GET US IN THERE, LAD! GET US IN THERE, NOW!" He keeps his eyes moving from the gnome to the giant, wondering what's going to happen next. Hang on, lass. And keep blastin' 'im.
Old Guy GM |
ROUND THREE:
"barukh tek argack, yo bolok na tarrukth!" Is Mokmurian's only reply.
Ref save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (19) + 33 = 52
Aurora's flames wash over him, causing no damage. Clearly he has some sort of resistance vs fire. He grins as he realizes what Aurora has cast to defend herself. He casts another spell, a quickened Haste, and steps off of the platform!
But the giant does not fall. Using his increased speed, he flies over to meet Aurora up near the ceiling.
att: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (6) + 23 = 29 mirror image: 1d2 ⇒ 2 Pop! That was the last one I believe.
How many more, little flea? How many more do you have?" Mokmurian growls with an evil grin. He has Aurora trapped, and he knows it.
ROUND THREE: your turn. Lym, you could not change the bat.
Lym Blackhand |
"TOMARU! NOW!" Lym shouts. "JUST FORGET THE BAT!"
This is not meant to badger you; I'm roleplaying the urgency of the situation, is all. Honest!
Lym Blackhand |
I am? o_o When did that happen? I didn't even know my name was down for the Miss C&C-pageant!
Aurora Ulfurdottir |
She laughs at his joke in the giant tongue
She watches without concern as her magical duplicates vanish one by one.
How many? As many as I need until my friends arrive. That's another word which sadly I feel you don't understand the meaning of...
She wards off his attacks with practiced moves as she incants another spell, a grim smile on her face.

Tomaru |
This time Tomaru does as bid and Teleports the group. Once inside, he immediately moves a little to the side to keep from being area of effect bait.\
The characters are positioned as they are because I took some licence to allow for some movement last round and to be in contact for the spell.
Lym Blackhand |
"Well done, Tomaru!" Lym compliments her (rather amorous) companion. Then her eyes alight on the flying Giant, and they glow redly, even through her lacey veil.
Anti-magic strikes Mokmurian like a battleaxe, ripping and tearing at the spells the Runelord's servant has wrapped around himself.
Right after the spell has gone off, Lym lifts off and flies a ways away from the others, so as not to present a handy target for area spells.
Once again, targeted Greater Dispel Magic, good for three spells at my current level. Dispel checks: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29, 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 and 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Thordak Ironheart |
Taking a moment to adjust to his new location, the dwarf narrows his eyes at the giant, "Pick on somebody yer own size, ya worthless piece of scum!" The dwarf's fury rises instantly as he steps up and swings mightily at the stone giant's... knee most likely.

If needed, I'll fly to get Mokmurian in range. Fly 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Old Guy GM |
Mokmurian chuckles evilly. "Oho? I think not, little flea!" He swings his great club at Aurora as she flies away, clearly seeing her despite her spell!
AoO: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36 dmg: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 -14 hp Aurora. He's a wizard after all!
Praxim's arrows fail to penetrate the giant's defenses. bouncing off of his tough skin. Lym flies up and casts her dispel. Mokmurian seems to slow down back to normal speed, and a thin magical aura drops off of him!
ROUND FOUR:
Mokmurian turns in air toward Lym. He bares his flattened and broad teeth at her, assessing her as a very real threat. His stony voice grates like an avalanche as he points at her. A thin, green ray strikes her square in the chest!

Your avatar shows 69/82, but I would assume that you all were healed prior to entering. Still, unless you have the Sihedron Medallion and False Life up, you would be below zero and disintegrated, sorry.
You guys are up. Mokmurian's AC is now down from 34 to 30. Lym dropped his shield spell. Go get him!
Aurora Ulfurdottir |
Gritting her teeth at the glancing blow she sustained flying away, Aurora is momentarily stunned as the magic arcs from Mokmurian, engulfing Lym.
Noooo!
She summons the last of her powerful magic, surrendering her only chance to magically escape, and instead channels her fear and anger in to one last spell.

Can I use Tugging Strands to allow her a reroll on her Fort save? It doesn't say its a swift action or anything.
If not
"Frack! Tomaru goes over to Praxim. "Make sure it sticks in him." Then he casts Silence on the first arrow.
Old Guy GM |
Tugging Strands reroll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
new damage: 5d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 1, 5) = 17
Lym dies...surely she dies...and yet...she doesn't! Tomaru twists the web of fate, rewinding the clock just enough for Lym to resist the worst of the Disintegrate spell. Mokmurian's evil grin turns to shock and amazement as Lym survives his attack.
Can't say there was a better time to use that!
EDIT: I allowed that just to see Lym kiss Tomaru!!!! :)
Old Guy GM |
Can I use Tugging Strands to allow her a reroll on her Fort save? It doesn't say its a swift action or anything.
The ability is not clear, neither is the entry for Supernatural Abilities. So I let it go, seemed like just the time and situation for it! With only a +8 to Fort, there was a very real chance she was going to fail it anyway. Mokmurian is no joke.
Praxim |
Its unclear from the spell description, but I'm not sure if you have to hit your target with flame of judgment. The spell just says the next creature you attack with smite evil. I'm fine with ruling it the next creature you hit, but if you go by the exact wording, Mok should have taken that second 1d6 of damage when he cast disintegrate, possibly, though unlikely disrupting it.
Lym Blackhand |
Spellcraft 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 24
The world flickers, and suddenly she is in vile pain. There is a fading memory of a long line of strangers, awaiting judgment.
She realizes what just happened.
She realizes what just happened!
Lym .... screams.
The sound is part barely-modulated horror, part incantation. Around her, the air crackles with building power, and a powerful blast of lightning arcs from Lym to Mokmurian, and then from the Giant toward his Wall of Force. After that, the spell seems to be exhausted, and Lym has flown behind one of the pillars, taking cover and floating earthward.
Chain Lightning to Mokmurian. Ref. DC 22 to halve 12d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 5, 3, 6, 2, 2, 1, 4, 5, 2) + 3 = 45 electricity damage. From Mokmurian to the Wall for 12d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 3, 6, 5, 5, 2, 4, 3, 2, 5) + 3 = 52 electricity damage. And Lym skedaddles, seeking cover from more spells.
Lym Blackhand |
EDIT: I allowed that just to see Lym kiss Tomaru!!!! :)
Just wait until we're next at an inn, provided we all survive this fight.....
Praxim |
More arrows fly.

Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 1 + 2 + 4 - 4 - 2 = 15
Damage from fire of judgment: 1d6 ⇒ 4
He gets a Will save to reduce that spell to one round. Probably only fails on a 1.
Plus 1d6 from each time Mok doesn't attack Praxim.
Tomaru |
I forgot, may I also draw a potion from my Handy Haversack?
If so.
"Thordak drink." Its a Potion of Fly.
I want to get you Air Walk, but this guy keeps messing up my plans.
Thordak Ironheart |
Seeing Lym get blasted and looking like she was about to be physically "erased", he breaths a sigh of relief as she remains up in the air in one piece. Furious he can do nothing to help, "COME DOWN HERE AND LET ME KILL YA PROPER, ROCK FOR BRAINS! I KNOW YER KIND FEAR US DWARVES AND RIGHTFULLY SO! IT WON'T HURT MUCH, YA HAVE ME WORD!" he yells at the giant.
Turning to Tomaru as he addresses him, the dwarf nods at the offer, "Thanks!" and drinks the potion, readying to head straight for the giant.
I have no idea what kind of action that is: receiving a potion from someone. I know drinking is a standard though.
Too bad I can't use myself as a missile. That would just be awesome.
Old Guy GM |

I believe it's part of the smite. One thing this fight has made clear is that the higher level we get, the harder it's going to be keeping track of all the spells and abilities in PbP.
Old Guy GM |
boneshatter Fort sv: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31
Mokmurian grimaces. "You'll have to do better than that, little flea!"
CL Ref sv: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
The stone giant wizard twists just enough to avoid some of the lightning bolt from Lym, and he glares at her with eyes full of hate.
Praxim's arrows pierce the giant, but his tough skin absorbs some of the damage. Still he lives...
But only barely...
Old Guy GM |
ROUND FIVE:
Battered and burnt, Mokmurian is still defiant. He roars in rage " You have only delayed the inevitable! My armies will destroy you! Do you think you have won? Your souls will feed the runeforge, and the Lord Karzoug will return!"
He pulls a scroll from his belt and begins to read. It doesn't take a wizard to know Mokmurian will escape via spell and return here with his forces to destroy you. You have nowhere to run...
As he finishes his spell, he looks up at you with an evil grin, knowing he has won. But the last syllables stick in his throat as he stutters in the casting, not once, but twice! Mokmurian’s body suddenly goes rigid. He spasms a few times, and then his head turns to face you, mechanically and clumsily, as if being forced to move by massive invisible hands. In a strangely accented voice, a voice that sounds almost human, he speaks, his eyes flaring with a soul-searing emerald radiance.
“So these are the heroes of the age. More like gasping worms to me—worms to be crushed back into the earth when I awaken the armies of Xin-Shalast, when the name Karzoug is again spoken with fear and awe. Know that the deaths of those marked by the Sihedron—the giants you have so conveniently slain for me—hasten my return, just as yours soon will. Fools, all of you."
The voice lets out a cruel, mocking laugh. "Is this all you could manage in ten thousand years?”
With that, the green eyes go dark; and Mokmurian's body slumps over, dead. The corpse floats lazily to the ground, still held up by the Fly spell. It lands softly with a slight bump as his club hits floor, then all is silent.
And that, my friends, is that. Combat over.
Aurora Ulfurdottir |
Hands and lips already moving to invoke more magic, Aurora stops as the giant's body is used as a puppet by some unseen entity. She watches dispassionately as Mokmurian's corpse floats to the ground.
Is everyone allright? Lym, I thought that was it for you there...
Aurora flies over to the wizard, laying one diminutive hand on the half-orc's shoulder.
Do we know who that was? A runelord I would gather...
Praxim |
"I guess even big dogs get fleas," Praxim says as the body finally comes to rest on the ground. He takes an arrow, knock it, and fires it into the giants skull from twelve inches away, just to make sure.
"In case he was shamming."
Lym Blackhand |
"Is everyone allright? Lym, I thought that was it for you there..."
"It was," Lym says, a tremor in her voice.
She looks to Tomaru, her eyes haggard. "... Thank you."For a moment, the Wizard lowers her masked and veiled face into her hands. Then she visibly shakes herself and drifts over to the slain Giant and Praxim.
"We have made some progress," she says, her voice deliberately analytical and unfeeling. "We now have confirmation of this Runelord's identity, a rough outline of his plan and the name of the place where he hangs his hat. We can use both to gather information from libraries and extraplanar sources."
Touching down next to Mokmurian, Lym draws her falchion, the enchanted metal singing, the single ruby in the pommel winking like an angry eye.
"I'll be glad to help with the chopping. But first we need to strip this thing of everything it carries. He was a wizard. There should be a spellbook somewhere. I'm going to need it, if this Karzoug is indeed as powerful as he claims."
Lym looks up, her eyes glancing from one companion to the next.
"This.... actually brings me to a point that I have been mulling over for a while. Those Sihedron amulets. Karzoug might be using them. They might be the focus for his scrying, the way he has learned of our existence. Or they may become such. Friends, I might not be able to make fresh Sihedron amulets, but I might be able to do something different, given the time."
Old Guy GM |
Let's get to the good stuff then, shall we? Mokmurian has the following on him: wand of bear's endurance (13 charges), +1 defending spell-storing club, bag of holding (type 2), fog-cutting lenses, robe of runes.
Mokmurian also has a seven-pointed key (which looks like it would fit a certain door nearby), and 500gp in diamond dust.
Searching his area reveals the following: all of his spellbooks. These include all spells from the core book up to and including 6th level. Feel free to throw in 10 additional spells from Deep Magic, same level restriction. Apart from his impressive collection of books on spellcraft and all of the spell components and laboratory equipment scattered throughout the room (which is worth a collected total of 1,500 gp, but weighs several hundred pounds), the chest under his desk contains the bulk of his remaining wealth, including 12,000 gp, 1,100 pp, an amber and sapphire necklace worth 4,000 gp, a set of ivory runestones worth 1,400 gp, and a scroll of contact other plane.
In addition, scattered among the stacks of Mokmurian’s invasion plans, battle tactics, and research notes is a single piece of paper depicting a map of the Lost Coast region of Varisia. Four points along the coast have “X” marks on them—three are placed some distance out to sea along the coast, but one is right over Sandpoint. A note on the map, written in Giant, reads “Hellfire Flume ruins—foundation stones from each would know where the traitor Xaliasa dwelt, and perhaps where he hid his key to Runeforge.”
Thordak Ironheart |
“So these are the heroes of the age. More like gasping worms to me—worms to be crushed back into the earth when I awaken the armies of Xin-Shalast, when the name Karzoug is again spoken with fear and awe. Know that the deaths of those marked by the Sihedron—the giants you have so conveniently slain for me—hasten my return, just as yours soon will. Fools, all of you."
The voice lets out a cruel, mocking laugh. "Is this all you could manage in ten thousand years?”
Stunned at the sound of the "new" voice, Thordak glares at the floating giant with the different voice. "Bring it on, freak show! Awaken your armies! We'll kill those too! And what kind o' name is Karzoug?! A stupid one that's what!" He looks around, wondering if the voice might respond but accepting the fact that it's long gone, Thordak huffs. "Chicken."
He thinks about for a moment, and then adds, "Perhaps, after we strip him of power items, we should make it difficult for him to be raised. Thordak, want to help chop him into tiny pieces?"
Shrugging, "Yeah I guess so. Maybe now I can hit the blasted, overgrown, pile of rubble now that he's dead," he says in a somewhat glum tone.
Tomaru |
At Lym's thanks, Tomaru just bows and says, "It was as Desna wills. He gets close enough to capture everyone in his healing energies.
Channel Positive Energy: 6d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 5, 1, 5) = 20
Lym Blackhand |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Lym first glances through Mokmurian's books -- then starts turning pages faster and faster, her growing consternation plain for all to see.
"This is .... well, it's everything," she says, awed. "Every spell from the Grand Classical List composed by Old-Man Matembe! I could - I could open a Wizard's school with all of this material! I could - I could...."
Lym heaves a deep sigh, then regains her self-control.
"And I can do more to fight Karzoug and save the world. Yes."
Her eyes swivel to Thordak and narrow.
"I can teach you to fly. Aurora, you'll help me, won't you? It'll be one for the ages; a self-tossing Dwarf."
Tomaru |
Can everything fit into the bag of holding? Or at least the spellbooks and papers?
"Let's pack all this up for later. There is still the large room in the center of this to investigate. Though we are all battle weary and that room is sure to be protected, I believe it would be a mistake to leave it for later."
I have more healing available but will need to replenish after this. Who needs some hp?
