OGGM's Fortress of the Stone Giants (Inactive)

Having pacified the Hook Mountain region, our heroes learn of an impending attack on the town of Sandpoint, where their adventures began only a year ago...

For some reason, the dragon's request infuriates the normally cheery cleric of Desna. "We did not want to fight you before, dragon." Tomaru spits out the word. "But you came unbidden to my town to kill my friends and family. To take the good townfolk as slaves or to sacrifice. Now you want to parley." He mocks the dragon's speech. "Now that you know that we will meet your fearsome roar with bold inspiration, your great fang and claw with steel and spell, your might dragonflame with a fury of righteousness, now that you know this, now you want to talk nice. No, dragon, all I want from you is your death. Try to parley with Pharasma, for you have nothing in this world that I would want."

I take it we can't actually see him in the back of the cave?

"I say you must still be near death to want to parley at all," Lym says, her voice low and cold.
"And as you can no doubt tell, you will need to say something very interesting before you will be heard."

Dropping his shoulders in frustration, he leans in close to the others. "Talk? The blasted beast wants to talk? I know it's a dragon and all, and he did come in to kill the town, but I can't just go choppin' 'im down if he doesn't fight. I just can't. No more than I could chop down those stupid giants that we captured and released. And trust me when I tell ya this, I REALLY wanted to bury me axe in every one of their faces," he nods as a matter of fact. "I say he needs ta give us all the information he can about the layout of this place. Ya know: How many? Who's stationed where? Where's the leader? and whatever else we can come up with that we be needin' ta know. I'm thinkin' we should at least see what he gives us," he says, shrugging.

No, you can't see him back there.

"Tell me, priest," the dragon addresses Tomaru, "do you volunteer to be first to die? Shall we address Pharasma together, you and I?" He chuckles, a low rumbling laugh that echoes in the cave and causes some of the coins to shift and clink.

"I am not near death at all, wizard. Despite the fact that that dog, Mokmurian, would not heal me. I have other resources. But that brings me to my point: I will not be a lapdog to that giant wizard any more. I have information. Who he is, what he is. What you can expect below the surface of Jorgenfist when you go there...and more. There are...other secrets that you should know. I will commit to telling you if agree to the parley. If you agree, we negotiate. If you do not agree...well then we shall see what we shall see."

Her tattoos swirling agitatedly across her skin in whirls of fire and ink, her blood calling to the dragon's, Aurora lands lightly on the coins.

Trust is a precious thing, you are telling us you would turn your coat with your current allies, so why should we trust you to hold to any bargain we strike?

Her voice is strong, thick with suppressed power.

and before any such bargain can be struck, there are several here that would see your end for past wrongs, your offer should encompass and understand these things if you truly do not wish to fight us here.

She adds, more softly now

If you swear to leave the region, or else defend it from Mokmurian and his allies, and leave Sandpoint and its environs alone, then that is a good starting point I would hazard. Speak on please, convince these others of the truth and value of your words

"Trust you say? I offered a parley, yet one of you continues to insult me and threaten me with death. How am I to know your intentions? You speak as if you are in some position of strength here. If we fight, I will die, that is certain. One of you will die, that also is certain. Because you see, your spell may have blocked the cave entrance, but it has also trapped you here with me. Have you seen a dragon's fury in a confined space little one?" The dragon chuckles again, this time it's deeper, somehow larger. Dust falls from ceiling and walls as it reverberates through the cavern.

"I think not. When we fought over the town, you had the advantage of being spread out so I could not engage you all at once. You will have no such advantage here. Also, do you not think that Mokmurian would have some way of keeping track of his strongest ally? If I die here, he will know you are coming. Believe me when I tell you this: Mokmurian is no mere stone giant chieftain. He wields the powers of the ancient ones."

The bulk of the dragon shifts again in the darkness. "Do you think me so foolish as to have only one entrance to my lair? No, I offer parley because I want to see Mokmurian dead. I offer information. I offer assistance. You may accept it or you may leave."

This last is spoken with a hint of menace, and smoke rolls out of the darkness of the cave.

"Now, are we done posturing? Are we negotiating or not?"

"I am willing to parley and will give convincing arguments to my comrades to do so, dragon," Lym says. "But I need an item of leverage to convince them. Dragon, I want to know your true name, the one by which you are known to other dragons."

Really? What do you think the chances of that are?

"And I want a commitment from you, signed in blood, that you give to me all of the treasure and plunder from Jorgenfist - including that which is found in the Black Tower...include your immortal souls, and the secret of the Starstone."

There is another huff, and smoke once again rolls out from the darkness.

"My patience wears thin. This is your choice: I will share what I know of Jorgenfist and the caverns below. I will also tell you what I know of the secret area that Mokmurian hides. I will also commit to engaging the forces outside the keep at a time determined by you. And..." the dragon adds, "I know of a secret way into Jorgenfist."

"In return, you will kill Mokmurian. Decide."

His anger rising at the idea that a golden opportunity is about to pass them by, "DONE!" the dwarf yells adamantly. "You've got yourself a deal, dragon." Aurora nods at Thordak's outburst

Please accept my condolences Master Thordak, I was not aware you had suffered such loss

she places one delicate hand on his arm before calling out to the back of the cave

Dragon, we share blood, you can feel that as surely as the breeze on your snout. My name is Aurora, I would like the pleasure of your common name too if we are to fight alongside each other, even just the once.

She stares at Thordak's haunted eyes

...it seems many have suffered under this Mokmurian, it will be a pleasure to contribute towards his end...

Praxim, the dragon is out of your 60' range...200' deep cave and all that...

A deep laugh rumbles from the rear of the cave. "Of all the outcomes of this meeting, the last thing I expected was the dwarf to be the voice of reason..." There is the sound of many coins shifting and moving with the impact of clawed feet. The sound gets closer and closer...

Then the darkness drops and before you appears the dragon. He is approximately 80' from you - all of it on the coin bed and difficult terrain. Crimson red, and much larger than you remember. The dragon over Sandpoint was large, a juvenile at best. This dragon dwarfs that one, a mature adult. His features remain the same, as do the scars of his recent wounds from your battle with him. He holds up a large claw to halt your questions.

"I have my reasons," he rumbles, his hot breath rolling over you even from this distance, "it was part of my agreement with Mokmurian when he defea...when he bested me in battle. If you live through it, you can ask him." The dragon says with some bitterness.

"The locals call me Longtooth, little one. But you may call me Hestoraxxas. Indeed, we are kin, although I might say the lineage did not favor you." He says to Aurora, taking a shot at her being a gnome and not a dragon.

To the rest of you, he speaks with some disdain (red dragon, after all!) "My hatred of you is surpassed only by my hatred of Mokmurian. But I will keep my word to you, if only because I do not desire another battle with you at this time! No, it will take all of us to defeat him." As if reaching a decision, he lays down on his bed of coins, head upon his foreclaws. But his hindquarters are ready, should anyone decide to do something foolish.

"What do I know? Let me see...I know the layout of the caves below Jorgenfist, which I will outline for you in detail. There are significant enemies there, lieutenants of Mokmurian. I do not know them, but I have seen them. There are also allies for you there, you will know them when you meet them. A stone giant named Conna. I do not know her importance to Mokmurian, but she is kept in the caves. She may able to help you."

The dragon cocks his head to the side, thinking. "There is more. Below those caves lies another...structure. I have never been there, but Mokmurian spends much of his time there, and keeps its secrets close to him. I believe there is a source of his power there."

"The Black Tower may be of interest to you as well. It is far more ancient than Jorgenfist. Indeed, it was the cornerstone that the Fist was built around. Rumors says that an ageless power dwells there, in league with Mokmurian."

"I save the best for last. There is another way in to Jorgenfist. A cave in the river gorge, guarded by foul undead spiders of great size. I would have burned them for sport, but was forbidden by that guð fordæmdur giant from doing so.' Heteraxxas huffs, and a billow of smoke rolls outward from his nostrils. "Still, time enough for that later. There is a tunnel in that cave that runs through the rock to emerge in the caves under Jorgenfist. Mokmurian believes it to be secure because of the deathwebs."

The dragon pauses to wait for his words to sink then he turns his great head to face Thordak. "We have not met, dwarf. But I can assure you of one thing: Mokmurian was responsible for the destruction of your clan. His death would go far to avenge that."

"An ancient structure and source of power....? Thassilonian ruins," Lym says, her eyes narrowing. "So Mokmurian is...?"

"A stone giant, nothing more." Hestoraxxas rumbles. "And yet he wields considerable arcane power. I see what you are thinking, wizard, but I do not believe the Black Tower is anything more than a sideshow. Someone, or something resides in the Tower that Mokmurian has a truce with. No, it is what he has found under the caves of Jorgenfist that should be your goal...after he's dead, of course.

While the dwarf seems to slowly calm at the touch from the gnome, the look upon him says that he's not quite in the present. His attention is quickly garnered, though, as the dragon's booming voice returns. He narrows his eyes toward the dragon as he speaks, listening to every word intently.

When Longtooth addresses the dwarf directly and confirms his suspicions, the dwarf's eyes go wide and he starts to shake uncontrollably with fury. Finding no enemies, he closes his eyes and concentrates to calm himself down just to keep himself from exploding in a blind rage. Taking a few deep breaths, he manages to steady himself. As his eyes reopen, a far off look is evident from within. "So it was him," he mutters quite calmly, yet, the poison and hatred undeniably obvious. And just as if nothing had happened, "We go through the tunnels. We destroy any of those blasted spiders that get in our way. If they don't, we avoid them. We'll be needin' all the magic you lot got for this one; don't wanna waste it on a bunch of freak bugs if we don't have to. We find this Conna and we get her aid. We find her, odds her we find any others that will aid us. Once that's done, we find Mokmurian. And when we find him...," he looks at them all in a matter of fact way and simply says, "he dies."

Hestoraxxas notes Aurora, taking the dragon's arrogance in her stride, all part of the package she knew.

Listening with interest, she interrupts only when she wants more details about the twisting and complicated tunnels, however when the subject of Thordak's clan arises, she falls silent.

Nodding at the dwarf's words she gestures to Longtooth

A bargain has been struck and our courses are set. We have the magic to signal you to attack when we need a distraction. Now if no-one has any other things to discuss, I think perhaps we should press on.

Once Silthanas actually does return to his home plane, Tomaru walks over to the ledge (or to the wall of force) separating himself from any deal made.

But we should rest before following the treacherous dragon's suggestion and going into the tunnels we wanted to investigate anyway.

Very good. Assume then, that you can rest if you wish; either here or in the spider cave. The search you concluded in the deathweb cave would tell you that you eliminated all of the spiders there. The tunnels are far too small to fit them. So rest up, tell me what spells you will have active when you enter the tunnels, and what order you will be in.

Actually a good time to bring up something; we usually assume that everyone is healed completely if the party is going to rest. The thought process being that any healers (Praxim/Tomaru in this case) would use up all of their daily allowances before sleeping. So unless someone has any really bad conditions, we can assume the same thing.

Ok, so I see the order as: Thordak, Praxim, Tomaru, Lym, Aurora.

The tunnels are cramped and winding. More than once, the taller members of the group must bend over nearly double to continue. The weight of the stone is oppressive over your heads, the only things you can see is the person in front of you.

What are we using as light? And who has it?

Lym casts four spells before the group enters the tunnels; Mage armou, Overland flight, Detect magic and Dancing lights. She keeps refreshing the two cantrips as needed, and sends one of the three lights twinkling ahead of the group to light their way, keeps one overhead, and lets one bring up the rear.

Just an fyi on the lights: there isn't an 'overhead' to have a light, you are hunched over for the entire trip just to keep from hitting your head on the tunnel ceiling. I'll assume you adjust that light forward or back as needed.

The other oft overlooked thing about dancing lights is that each light has to stay within 10' of its brethren, so (at least for any degree of actual distance) they would have to be either ahead or behind

Aurora advises the lights to go forward, as she can see in the dark :)

The trip through the tunnels is a claustrophobic affair. Never more than 5' wide, and often 3', it is with some relief that Thordak indicates there is a cave ahead. At the same time, Lym's dancing lights up ahead show the gleam of gold and rubies on the ground just inside the cave on the edge of the tunnel opening. From here, it looks to be jewelry of some kind.

Praxim:
No indications of evil yet, but the stone of the tunnels would hinder much of your scan anyway, you're pretty sure.

Please keep in mind the confines of the tunnel and your line of sight. The further back you are in line, the less you can see ahead. Right now, everyone - except Thordak of course - can just make out the cave and the jewelry, but that's it. Thordak can see all of it.

"It's just a bit of gold and rubies, lass. What's not ta be trusted? C'mon, we've no time ta waste." Thordak moves on ahead, keeping an eye out for any form of trouble.

Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 19

Aurora squints down the corridor, even her vision struggling to see much at this distance.

Well we can't just stay here!

As Thordak begins to move forward she nods in approval.

The only indication trouble is coming is a flash of movement and the gleam of a tiny golden sphere arcing through air towards Thordak. More specifically, towards the necklace at his feet...

to hit with throw: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

The sphere hits the floor next to the necklace with a ping and detonates!

6d6 save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
4d6 save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
2d6 save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Fortunately, the necklace does not go off - but the original explosion still rocks the cave.

Fireball Ref Save DC 14 for half: 8d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 2, 6, 6, 5, 5) = 34

Roll your Ref saves as part of next post. Thordak's save is straight up, everyone else is still in the narrow tunnel so they get a bonus: Praxim +2, everyone else +4

A high-pitched voice screams in broken common "I'll deliver your heads to Mokmurian on a stick!" A small lizard-like form charges out from your right, wielding a spear and frothing at the mouth!

power attack, rage: 1d20 + 22 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 22 - 4 = 32 dmg: 1d8 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17 -17 hp, Thordak

FIRST ROUND: the kobold went (surprise round and 1st round), you guys are up. Thordak blocks the tunnel mouth and unless he moves, no one else can see anything because the kobold is just off to the right of Thordak. Don't forget your saves for the fireball.

The dancing lights are ahead of Thordak, right?

You said those trailing could barely make out the cave. Can I tell if it opens up to at least 10' of space? Do I think there's enough space to Dimension Door myself and Praxim into the cave? If I do, that's my action.

Lym curses at the wave of pain as she takes the full brunt of the damage -- "It's NEVER just treasure, you fool! Aurora, crack its bones!" -- and then flings five darts of pure force at the kobold!

Unless he's packing Shield, that's 5d4 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 2, 3) + 5 + 2 = 19 force damage.

I forgot, if I don't think I have room to Dimensions Door both of us, I will cast Hold Person (DC 17) instead.

You can't see him until space clears for you to move up. Only Thordak can see her right now. Tomaru and Praxim will be able to see as well. You could move into the room, but there will an AoO.
