Round 7

With a mighty swing, Bedivere attempted to plunge his broadsword into the mount in front of him.

all same stuff
Might: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Success:
The blade dug deep into the Dino mount.

Failure:
He struck the ground as the Dino jumped back and lunged at him while he was vulnerable.

Swift Glaive Who Fights With Panache

Rel spoke earnestly to the crazed mount as it attempted to chew on his sword-staff. "I had hoped that you would desist, but I guess we both know that I'm far too delicious for that. I'm tired of dancing with you alone, though. Ta."

Rolling to the side, Rel dodged back from the mount and circled to the one currently engaging Nepo. While he spent some time whirling his sword-staff in a more dramatic fashion than the situation strictly required on the approach he transitioned into a series of quick professional thrusts after closing the distance.

Speed attack on Dino 4 while it is grappling with Nepo for a reduction of two steps(assuming it's still grappling when this happens, if not it'll be an attack against the same target just with no bonus), using effort to increase damage. Base damage of sword-staff is 5, increased to 9 with effort. Total speed cost is 2 with edge. Attack Flourish bonuses start again.

Success:
Swiping and thrusting again and again, Rel's flurry of strikes cut the lizard's vulnerable side to pieces. It remained standing only by virtue of its less organic components, though the pain only seemed to make it angrier.

Failure:
While Rel's strikes were expertly directed, the rider was no stranger to protecting his mount as it ran down prey. Deflecting each blow with his primitive weapon, he refused to give Rel the opening necessary to run the mount through.

Swift Glaive Who Fights With Panache

If the mount is still alive after Nepo's turn:

Hoping for a dramatic coup de grace on the savage creature, Rel swung his sword-staff around in a huge arc and brought it down full force.

Might attack with Sword-spear. Base damage is 6. Attack flourish continues
Might: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

His pause for dramatic effect gave the wounded mount more than enough time to sidle out of the way, however.

If the mount is dead (same roll though):

While gearing up for another swing, Rel was caught off guard by the sudden collapse of the mount and rider following Nepo's strike. The flashing sword-staff swung well wide of the entire tumble as he quickly backed out of the way.

Round 8

Seeing as he was victorious, Bedivere sat on the ground where he once stood and took a deep breath.

Quick Recovery: 1d6 ⇒ 2

That's Ok, no biggie.

BTW, I'm going to give you guys some XPs after this encounter.

I know you all said you would save them but using them for rerolls could also come in handy every once in a while.

Recovery rolls are 1d6+tier

Well, let's give Nepo one more day to post since he's being munched on by the biomechanical dino. Maybe he went into shock or something. :)

I'll move this along tomorrow.

Swift Glaive Who Fights With Panache

Rel will use his ten minute recovery, though we can certainly wait if Nepo needs more time than that after making his first recoveries.

Still wired from the battle, Rel did a lap around the battlefield to burn off the excess adrenaline, before slowing down with a series of quick stretches. Seeing the sorry state of his companion, he flashed a smile and did his best to perk him up. "I gotta say, these half-lizard half-automaton bites are going to make for some extremely impressive scars. You and I are going to be knee deep in admirers when we get back, Nepo, mark my words."

Recovery: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
4 to Might, 3 to Speed

Once the bleeding was under control, it seemed the worst of the damage had been to Rel's clothes. "That's the problem with these savages. No respect for good Navarene silk!"

Searching through the loot, Rel sighed once the Medallion had been identified "Someone else ought to take this medallion, pretty though it is. Its anti-sound barrier makes a neat match of deafness and blindness when combined with my sonic detonation cypher, but to surprise someone with them we'll need someone turning the infernal contraption on while I fiddle with the detonation sphere.

As an aside, I'd like to keep things mechanical. I'm having fun with the combat and occasionally embellishing it, but it's nice to be able to make a simple post when time is short. Having a character I'm not too invested in has also helped me to play less conservatively and get a better sense of how many points I can afford to spend.

Ok, embellished combat/challenges works for me as well.

I will eventually want to start a campaign in the upcoming Predation Cypher Setting but that is a bridge to be crossed once we get to the river. :)

Swift Glaive Who Fights With Panache

What range are we from the temple entrance and then men? Does the patrolling man stick close or does he range far enough out that he can be isolated?

Rel indicated for his companions to come closer and whispered "They haven't seen us yet, so you should take the lead, Nepo. If you could sneak in and pull up that lizard-mount's stake I could then toss in my sonic detonation cypher and hopefully spook it off along with deafening the guards. You might be caught in the blast, though, if you aren't caught by something worse first, so I'm hoping for better ideas."

male
Rel The Third wrote:

The patrolling man stays close to the entrance (an opening into a small hill).

The other two men and dino are within short distance of the entrance (the men on one side and the dino on the other side).

You are all about 300' away from the entrance.

Action 1

"I say we watch the patrolling guard, wait for a chance to catch them offguard and spread out. Maybe after nightfall?" He looked to his companions for input.

male

As you watch for a few hours, nothing really changes except for the fact that small patrols, much like the ones you fought, come in and out of the camp. The 'permanent' guards also change out after a few hours.

It's obvious the small men keep a 28-hour watch on this place but they don't live here.

Without too much RPing (or as much as you like), I need for you to tell me some sort of approach so I can figure out how the small men react.

Since Nepo seems to be occupied, I agree that rushing them would be the best option for Bedivere and me. I get bonus on running, which should make closing the distance easier

It's a speed task 4 (12) to cover 100' with one action which would leave you at long range at the start of the next round.

This is without taking into account the movement from your opponents...

Breathing evenly, Rel ran hard to close the distance between himself and the entrance.

Using speed to run, trained in running.
speed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

As he was still some distance out, he opted to pace himself during the early portion of the run.

As for preparations, I assume we are all wearing our armour? That's about all I can think of.

Not wanting to tire before the battle, Bedivere jogged towards enemies.

Dammit, 1 off again!

Despite running his hardest, Rel failed to pull ahead of the even pace set by the others. He glared at Bedivere's excellent form and easy strides. "The previous battle must have taken more out of me than I thought..."

Bedivere continued to jog forward until in range to let off a crossbow bolt at the leftmost scout.

Guys: I will continue with these small turns. These turns don't take me much time and do help me to continue to understand the mechanics of the system.

However, please let me know if you want to stop. I promise I won't get mad or sad. :)

Swift Glaive Who Fights With Panache

Grimacing from the arrow wound and cursing his eyes for not spying the hidden trap, Rel crouched down to provide a smaller target while he pried at the jaws that held him in place. "I'm lucky it didn't break my leg..." he muttered.

Might: 1d20 ⇒ 14

The trap snapped open after a few tugs, obviously meant to restrain small game and not a determined warrior. Rel spent a moment massaging feeling back into his leg before taking off again.

I'm good to keep going at least until the end of this current fight, though I also wouldn't be sad or mad if Bedivere has had enough and I wouldn't want to continue alone.

Fair enough. We'll see what Bedivere wants to do. I'm not as invested in making this work as I am the main game so I can go either way.

I see little reason to continue this one with only the two of us, but lets finish this battle at least.

Seeing his comrade in trouble, Bedivere quickened his pace to reach Rel before the scouts did.

Speed: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Success:
He reached Rel and attempted to help him wrench free. Giving him an asset to his roll to escape.

Failure:
Not being able to reach him in time, Bedivere opted to give him covering fire with his crossbow, loosing a bolt towards the closest scout to his companion.

Since moving a short distance (max 50') is an action and moving and attacking at an immediate distance (max 10') is also just one action, I'll have moving an immediate distance be a 'free action'.

In summary, I'll move Bedivere 10' closer and have him shoot.

Carefully staying out of the ponderous beast's reach, Rel moved to engage one of the scouts and force him to defend himself.

He flashed his swordstaff around in a series of feints before plunging it forward, hoping to dispatch his foe quickly.

Speed Attack with swordstaff against Scout 2, applying effort to increase chance to hit. Base damage is 6. Attack flourish is now active giving Bevediere a +1 bonus on his next roll.

Success:
The small man was barely able stand after Bedivere's heavy bolt, and Rel made short work of him.

failure:
Though the small man was force to turn away from the robe, his blade met Rel's and the two fenced expertly just out of reach of the thrashing beast.

Seeing that the Dino has 30hp, it is safe to assume that it is a pretty high level of creature. Lets say, 8 or 9 if it has some extra defense from thick skin or what have you... I think we just leg it, haha!

Agreed, though it'll overtake us on open terrain, so I think the only safe way is onwards and inwards. That is to say that I think the temple entrance is our best bet. Either the dino won't fit in there, or the confined space will give us smaller folk the advantage.

Rel flinched as the rope snapped and the sauroid charged free. "That's going to be a problem. Glancing over at the temple enterance, he figured it would be their only chance to even this fight up again.

But Bedivere was too far away to easily reach the doorway. Rel resolved to buy him some breathing room with his usual flair for the dramatic.

"Hey lizard breath! Tasty morsel right here! Come and get me". Waving his arms and whooping, Rel took off running.

Speed roll to run a long distance away before looping back to the enterance on later turns, attracting the dino far enough away from the temple entrance for Bedivere to make a break for it in relative safety from the dino. Trained in running.

speed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

If I've got my rules straight, 'drawing the attack' (corebook page 101, cooperative actions) is a free action that doesn't require a roll unless the foe is determined or intelligent. Doing so modified defense rolls by one step to my detriment. However, on corebook page 97 it covers 'moving targets' and says that an attack against a target that is doing nothing but running is done at one step to the attacker's detriment, so it should even out as long as Rel keeps sprinting. If the dino can even attack him while giving chase, which I'm still not entirely clear on.

male

The dino is high level but it's actually 'more durable' than its level would suggest. I think it's a level 5 creature, (6 points damage), defends physically as level 4 due to size. I have the details at home.

So it's big and nasty but not an automatic party killer.

Your actions are still fine though.

Questions?

Game on!

male

The stats for the big dino are as above and remember that if you get bit, you'll have to make a might roll to get away or suffer automatic damage the next round.

I'll wait for Bedivere's confirmation of what he wants to do before moving this along.

Seeing the creature loose, Bedivere grew a bit angered and yelled to the scouts. "How would YOU feel if we brought a hulking behemoth along?", followed by a crossbow bolt to the already wounded scout.

Rel forged onwards, unwilling to look back at the pursuing monster. The sound of its pounding gait was more than enough to let him know that he needed to keep up the pace.

Continued trained running
Speed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Ahead Rel spotted several more primitive claw traps like the one that had held him up on the approach. He began to sweat as he slowed down to choose his steps carefully until he reached the other side of the trapper's route.

Hey this thread doesn't have a recruitment page so I am posting here - If you want another PC here I like the straightforward nature of this campaign as well. I would be happy to play a nano to round out the group and I have some game mechanics stuff I am interested in checking out as well. No big deal if you three are keeping it small, but looks like fun and I want in! Obviously, happy to wait until after you deal with the dino haha
