I'm thinking of trying to DM a campaign using the new Monte Cook role-playing game called Numenera (Numenera Website).

From the website..."Numenera is a science fantasy roleplaying game set in the far distant future. Humanity lives amid the remnants of eight great civilizations that have risen and fallen on Earth. These are the people of the Ninth World. This new world is filled with remnants of all the former worlds: bits of nanotechnology, the dataweb threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices. These remnants have become known as the numenera.

Player characters explore this world of mystery and danger to find these leftover artifacts of the past, not to dwell upon the old ways, but to help forge their new destinies, utilizing the so-called “magic” of the past to create a promising future."

If I can get 3 or more people that want to play, I will start a campaign. I would be looking for folks wanting to post once a day or more and are interested in a role-playing focused experience. The only thing that would be required for the players is the players guide which is available for $7.99 from DriveThruRPG.

I'm interested, but I'll have to read it first. I've been interested in Numenera ever since I first heard about Torment, all the more since I read this. I've been reading Shadowrun 5 lately, probably thanks to another kickstarter

I have interest. I played a brief encounter during play testing and enjoyed it. I will go get the players guide now...

i am interested and will purchase the guide.

likely will try my hand at a Jack

I am interested, and I already have the Numenera PDF.
I am thinking on making either a Jack or a Nano.

Excellent, can't wait to see your character.

Super!

That's great...

I am a Strong Glaive who Explores Dark Places... Though profile pic will change.

How much backgroundy stuff would you like?

I'm interested and have the pdfs- when do you want characters put together by?

Welcome Krathok to the 9th World. Feel free to write as much or as little background as you want.

I will probably put together a Nano ...

How soon are you hoping to start? I'd love to give this a shot but might need a few days to do money stuff before I can committ to buying a new system or book.

I´m thinking either a Mechanical Nano who Fuses Flesh and Steel or a Swift Jack who Rides the Lightning.

Numenera is such a fascinating world/concept... I'm in..

I'm thinking a Mystical Glaive who either Fuses Flesh and Steel or Lives in the Wilderness, I'm not sure which yet. :)

I'm considering either a Rugged Glaive who Hunts (or Controls Beasts) or a Charming Jack who Works Miracles.

DM, you know what you're doing for an adventure?

Either The Beale of Borega or The Hidden Price

Andiemus wrote:

It seems as if there is enough interest to get started at the end of the this week (Friday or Saturday)

James Keegan wrote:

Let's shoot for the end of the week.

D'arrgh! I'm still waiting for my Kickstarter reward to take a look at any of the books and make anything. Snail mail. Gotta love it.

bought the book, i will give it a look this evening.

I'm gonna buy the PDF when I get off the road tonight and get a chance to sit down over some good and peruse it. Seems an interesting concept for a system.

All - This is what I have so far for interest. Please let me know if I missed anyone or if I have your status wrong...

Wolfman1911 - Interested
Ryan H - Interested, likely a Nano
Tenro - Interested, Jack, bought the book
Mad Beetle - Interested, either Jack or Nano, has PDF's
Krathok - Interested, Glaive, No Profile completed
James Keegan - Interested, Glaive or Jack, Has PDF's
Andiemus - Interested
Arknight - Interested, Glaive
ThatEvilGuy - Interested, Kickstarter subscriber waiting on snail mail
ShadowyFox - Interested

That's 10 interested so I'm not going to add anymore to the list. Sorry :(

If you would like to play and you're listed above, please go ahead and complete a profile. Embracing the game concept, please start by completing the statement: "Character name is a (fill in adjective) (fill in noun) who (fill in verb). Examples could be "Aubster is a Rugged Glaive who Controls Beasts" or "Aubster is a Charming Nano who Focuses Mind Over Matter."

There are no right or wrong ways to pick a character, assign stat pool points, etc. I will pass out cyphers once your character profile is done.

So far I am ...

Callidus is a clever Nano who fuses flesh and steal

I envision Callidus as living on the streets since he was young, finding tech/numenera and learning to infuse his body with it on his own. Since it was self done and self taught he's always adjusting the tech, tinkering with it, moving wires from one port to another. Where it's fused with his flesh it's sometimes pink with a little infection. He's clever, living off what he can find or steal and while he's a nano he's not great with knowledge/history. He's a natural, self-learner.

I can change all this to make it fit.

(I saw someone else was thinking fuses flesh and steel ... if I am stepping on toes I can switch! This just fit the concept I had in my head.)

Galahad Rothery is a Graceful Jack that Fights with Panache

Excellent concept, I really like it. I don't think that there is any need to change even if someone else fuses flesh and steel. I will pass out your cyphers later today so you can take them into account when buying equipment.

Have to love Panache... :-)

Amadeus Rikter is a strong glaive who bears a halo of flame.

Yeah I figured the first tier ability would help others out. My biggest concern now is... armor or no armor?

@RyanH: are you thinking of going more with Might or Speed? I was thinking more Speed as that would fit either Verbiage well... I'm comfortable either way though too :)

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I currently have down

Might 9
Speed 11
Intellect 16

After all adjustments ... and may even out might and speed ... but totally flexible.

That's right, you did say Nano, didn't you :)

I think this is where I'm headed:

Devrien is a Mystical Glaive who Lives In The Wilderness
Raised in a small village by the village witch/Nano, Devrian grew up learning all about the numenera. Devrian was just into his young adulthood when a change in ruling group resulted in a mob attacking his mother because of her suddenly 'heretical' ways. He tried to fight them off and amazingly succeeded in defeating several older men. However, the mob leaders used this as proof his mother was heretical and overwhelmed the pair, resulting in the beheading of his mother and the exile of Devrian so that he could 'spread the word' of the village's new philosophy.

He took to the wilderness like a amphibious beast to water and never looked back as he fled as far as he could from his home.

Thoughts?

You also have collected (or stolen) the following Cyphers that you will have available at the start of the saga:

Catseye Len - Inserting the lens into an eye allows you to see in complete darkness for 8 hours

Intellect Edge Chip - insertion into a data port on your body gives you one extra point of Intellect Edge for 1 hour

Bumblebee Capsule - Yellow and black capsule restores 4 points of a stat pool (your choice) when swallowed

Tenro wrote:

You have the following two Cyphers at the beginning of the Saga:

Stim Pill - Decreases the difficulty of the next action by 2 steps

Living Solvent - Once activated dissolves one cubic foot of material per round for 5 rounds

Sounds really good...2 starting Cyphers

Culuva Venom Extract - Apply to one weapon, will cause an extra point of speed damage on each hit for the next 28 hours (by-passes armor)

Greenberry Packet - Restores 6 might stat points when swallowed

Andiemus wrote:

Hot concept ;)

Starting two Cyphers

Crystal Ring - Once activated increases armor protection by 1 for 28 hours

Adhesion Clamps - Allows for automatic climbing of any surface, even horizontal ones. Lasts for twenty minute

Am I correct in assuming these are anoetic?

Yes, they are Anoetic Cyphers so can easily be used by anyone.

Seems you've got enough interest so I'm happy to step back and let another take my spot. I'll be checking in on the game though to see how it goes.

Cheers and good luck.

Callidus
Callidus is a clever nano who fuses flesh and steal

Spoiler:

Ports and Plugs
Callidus has lived on the streets since he was young, finding tech and stealing tech to sell and learning (with sometimes catastrophic results) to infuse his body with the tech on his own. Since the fusing was done by himself and all of his knowledge of numanera and cyphers was self-taught his cybernetics are a ramshackle and hodgepodge mess of wires, circuitry and ports. Because of this Callidus is always adjusting and fiddling with the tech, tinkering with it, moving wires from one port to another replacing portions with newer or better found and stolen hardware.

Given his lack of appropriate protocols for safely fusing cybernetics with flesh where his flesh meets steel, or where a port was recently infused his flesh is often pink with infection, or he leaves scars with his untrained incisions and suturing.

Callidus is clever, living off what he can find or steal and while he's a nano he's not great with knowledge or history. He's a natural, self-learner adept at manipulating nanites and numenera without understanding the larger picture, or why things are the way they are. As a petty thief Callidus often finds himself having to quickly talk his way out of a situation, or bluff his way past those in authority.

Might 12
Speed 14
Intellect 16

Clever
- +2 intellect
- Trained in all interactions involving lies or trickery
- Trained in defense rolls to resist mental effects
- Trained in all tasks involving identifying or assessing danger, lies, quality or importance, functinon or power
- Never good at studying or training trivial knowledge difficulty in tasks of lore increased one step
- 10 extra shins

Fuses Flesh and Steel
- Connection - Another PC knows the technology and frequency of the broadcast portion of the central processing units attached to Calliduses' nervous system. In addition the PC knows the secret key necessary to decrypt the information in the data stream. With the right equipment anyone with this knowledge could track the location and perhaps monitor aspects of Calliduses' cybernetics such as see what he's seeing through an enhanced eye. With the right skills someone could take control of the various technologies, causing them to trigger, or shut off portions of his systems. The other PC knows this information because for the initial fusing of the control unit into Calliduses' nervous system he had to be unconscious, the other PC had to instantiate a wireless connection and run the boot code.
- Free light tools
- Minor effect - Servos learn from successful actions - +1 to similar actions (after first)
- Major Effect Discharge a small charge into foe - Using same stat that causes Major effect - Make immediate attack - 4 points electrical damage

Tier 1
- +1 Armor
- +3 to might pool
- +3 to Speed Pool
- Special Healing - First 5 damage must be healed by using repairing methods

Equipment
Starts with 14 because of "Clever"

Knife - 1 Shin
Leather Jerkin - 3
Clothing - 1
Boots - 1
Bag of light tools - (Free, Fuses Flesh and Steel)
Messenger bag(backpack) - 2

Cyphers
-Catseye Lens - Inserting the lens into an eye allows you to see in complete darkness for 8 hours
-Intellect Edge Chip - insertion into a data port on your body gives you one extra point of Intellect Edge for 1 hour
-Bumblebee Capsule - Yellow and black capsule restores 4 points of a stat pool (your choice) when swallowed

Appears as a Deus Ex, Elysium, Borg mashup.

I submit Nasir of the Kiln. He is a Rugged Glaive who Hunts With Great Skill.

Background:

Spoiler:
In his youth, Nasir lived on the edge of the Steadfast in the wilds beyond a remote clave. He has no memory of parents of any kind- rather, he lived like a feral child with a seemingly innate knowledge of the language. While he was curious of other humans, he nonetheless felt separate from them- even more so than his life in seclusion would suggest. When asked where he came from, Nasir simply said "Kiln". He didn't intend to lie- it was simply the first thing that sprang to mind even though he hadn't a clue what he was talking about. Through rough nights of cold and hunger, he learned how to hunt well and which plants are edible, which are medicinal and which are poisonous. Living on his speed, strength and wits alone he honed himself into an excellent predator and eventually settled into a kind of equilibrium with nearby settlements, dealing with dangerous animals and (eventually) escaped human criminals to earn shins toward man-made goods and to participate in some way with the community.

One day only a year ago, he found a savaged corpse on the trail of a great beast. Turning the man over, he saw to his shock that the dead man had Nasir's face and features- right down to his splayed and finger-like toes that always made climbing and swimming so easy for him. Who could this be? What could it mean? From there, Nasir set out into the Steadfast and hoped to find some answers while plying his trade.

am i correct in saying that if i am trained in speed defense from two or more things, that i count as specialized?

This is RyanH ... here is my profile/alias, some updates including adding Nano features.

I guess I have the same question as Tenro ... it also looks like my identify skills may stack

From Nano
- Trained in Numenera - attempt to understand and identify properties

From Clever
- Trained in all tasks involving identifying or assessing danger, lies, quality or importance, function or power

Piertar is a Swift Jack, who Rides the Lightning.

Stats:

Might: 11 - Edge:0
Speed: 16 - Edge:0
Intellect: 13 - Edge:1

Swift:
Fast: +4 to Piertar´s Speed Pool.
Skill: Piertar is trained in initiative actions (to determine who goes first in combat).
Skill: Piertar is trained in running actions.
Inability: Piertar is fast but not necessarily graceful.
The difficulty of any task involving balance is increased by one step

Jack:
Cypher Use: Piertar can carry two cypers at a time
Practiced with Light and Medium Weapons
Skills: Trained in Jumping
Flex Skill: At the beginning of each day, choose one task (other than attacks or defense) on which Piertar will concentrate. For the rest of that day, he is trained in that task. He can’t use this ability with a
skill he is already trained in to become specialized

Equipment
-Clothing
-1 Verred
-1 Crossbow, 12 bolts
-Leather Jerkin
-Explorer´s Pack
-Pack of Light Tools
-2 Cyphers
-1 Oddity
- 8 Shins

Tricks of the Trade
Practiced with Armor: Can wear armor, Might cost and Speed reduction is 2 less.
Skill with Defense: Trained in Speed Defense.

Rides the Lightning:
Connection: Pick one other PC. This character has been your friend for a long time, and you have learned to bring her along when you ride the
lightning. If the character is standing right next to you, you can take her with you when you use the Bolt Rider or Electrical Flight powers. (Normally, neither ability allows you to transport other creatures.)
Additional Equipment: Piertar has a bag of miscellaneous batteries and power cells. Whenever he find a new device that operates on batteries or cells (GM discretion), there is a 75 percent chance that the
bag contains one that will power it if it depletes.
Electrical Esoteries:If Piertar performs esoteries, those that would normally use force or other energy instead use electricity. For example, a Flash or an Onslaught force blast is a blast of lightning. This alteration changes nothing other than the type of damage and the fact that it might start fires.

Tier 1 Powers
Shock 1 IP
Piertar´s hands crackle with electricity, and the next time he touches a creature, he inflicts 3 points of damage.
Alternatively, if he wields a weapon, for ten minutes it crackles
with electricity and inflicts 1 additional point of damage per attack. Action for touch; enabler for weapon.
Charge 1+ IP
You can charge an artifact or other device (except a cypher) so that it can be used once. The cost is 1 Intellect point plus 1 point per level of the device. Action

Background and personality will follow.

also, if i start with light armor, is there any chance i could sell that for more medium bolts?

Galahad's sheet is complete (as far as i know, aside from an oddity that the GM picks)

I will expand on his history a bit, as well as his appearance, tomorrow.

Some details for Devrien on the profile :)
