Seeing Narayan move to the ex-priest, Kai moves past his allies towards the newly summoned creature. As he does so, he calls out what he knows of both creatures. (Please go ahead and read the spoiler.)
Along the way, he sighs as he drops his longspear, pulling out his cold iron morningstar along the way. When he reaches the shoggti, he examines it quickly for vulnerabilities before bringing down the weapon with a mighty blow!

OOOh wee. At long last, I am here. First time on the forum since Friday, folks. I'm here now, however. We should have this finished by the end of the weekend. For real this time. For realsies this time.
Lin Kai smacks the freshly appeared shoggti in the face, and it recoils in pain. The priest decides to join in the fight and charges the incoming nagaji.

The pathfinders slam and fire into the octopoid shoggti until its form collapses on the floor near the rift, dispatching it from the material plane. A job well done, but the fissure is still spewing out Abyssal energy into this world. While the stream seems less powerful since the chimeral died, it is likely formidable and will cause damage either way.
Lin Kai |
Kai lets out a sigh of relief when the monster falls. He moves back to retrieve his longspear then gets to study fissure and the area to determine how to close the rift.

Kai shares what he pieced together. "We need to repair the dilapidated shrine there and restore its glyphs. That would hasten the closing of the rift. That is only a short-term solution, however. It needs to be maintained to prevent this from happening again. The cult also needs to be eliminated to stop the flow of quintessence that feeds the rift."

Can one person attempt both? If not, then just the arcana/planes one.

GM NotEspi |
Lin Kai studies the place for a few moments, and looks at the ruined building ot the north of the fissure. In a moment of brilliance, it hits him, and goes on to share what he thinks can be done to fix the fissure and start the healing process.
In a coordinated effort, you partially restore the shrine to a working condition, and reactivate the glyphs in it. At least partially. By the time you are done, you realise that the fissure outside is no longer spewing jets of blight fire into the air, but merely saps the heat from the area in a very slow manner. You take a moment to rest, and realise that the wound in the ground is completely closed now, but its effects on the surroundings do not go away that easily. The corrupting power of the Abyss will heal in time, if given the chance. Either that or the organisms die and new ones will take their place.
GM NotEspi |
Confident in the positive result of your work on the shrine and glyphs, you set out back to North Winds. While the journey is easier than the way to the fissure, the odd mutations on plants and creatures makes it still a bit unnerving. As you scan the forest for a clear path, you find Zepha standing in the forest, observing the carnage.
He notices you and nods in your direction. When you come closer, he speaks out. "Hello again! While I am happy to see you, these circumstances are quite unfortunate. I walk through these woods, and I must say I don't like what I see. I will have to remain here to observe Kaimuko bloom once more. Perhaps even put the poor mutated animals out of their misery, if necessary.", the empyreal sighs sadly. "In any case - you have done Tianjing, and perhaps all of Golarion, a great service this day. One that this world may not be able to repay. But do not forget that my reach extends a bit beyond this world. I'll remain in the area and keep an eye on the restorative process, and to prevent any future intrusions. Thank you for your service, Pathfinders."
Without leaving you too much time to talk, Zepha continues in his 'stroll', but mentions he will stay in touch with Amara Li and the Way of the Kirin, in case he is required.
Continuing on through the woods, you find yourself near North Winds again. While there is much more commotion this time, most of it is caused by the deserters now being in chains, waiting for their sentence. Their former colleagues, but still brothers in arms, speak with the deserters in what may seem to be their last days of their lives. The general consensus is that the deserters are to be executed, but Commander Gu Xiang did not speak out the sentence yet.
Many deserters do not complain about dying. The pain caused by the mutation seems to be too much to bear even for hardened soldiers. Others accept the commander's would-be sentence with humility. Knowing that they would send a deserting soldier to his or her death if it were their call, they wait for judgement. Despite that, apologies can be heard throughout the camp. Even in chains, the garrison of North Winds takes care of their new prisoners and tend to their wounds. Naki of the Twenty Four Masks included.
As you approach the commander's tent, you hear a debate between the commander herself and Scout Yuto. Yuto vouches for the deserters, and claims that they were influenced by someone or something, and that influence has mostly dissipated on the way back here. Commander on the other hand, needs to make an exemplary punishment. Desertion is not to be taken lightly in her fortress. Shiyo and Tai Dan stand nearby, occasionally giving their input.
When you enter the tent, the commander seems satisfied that you have returned. She asks for a report on the situation immediately, as if she wanted to take her mind off the deserter issue.
Victoria Hennessee |
Victoria starts at the commanders request for a report.
Indeed, the situation was much as we feared, but in many cases worse.
She pauses as she recalls the events.
The troops were deceived and consumed by the blight. But at the heart of the entire plot was an out-worldly taint...an unspeakable...a qlippoth and a dark priest calling it to this world via a fissure. All have been defeated, but not without permanent stain on the world and the men afflicted by the blight. They cannot be held entirely responsible for theirs misdeeds.

Shonne nods once. Humans after all have very little control over how dumb they are.

Under the combined pressure of Scout Yuto and your input, the commander reconsiders her options for the punishment.
"Very well - I won't have them executed, but something harsh will be devised to put the garrison back in shape. The soldiers will know who's in charge for a long time to come."
Scout Yuto bows to Gu Xiang. "These are good men, Commander. They were swayed towards their actions by subterfuge. Thank you for your mercy."
"And thank you,", he turns towards the you - "Pathfinders, for your help and input. We'll make sure the shrines are in working condition to prevent this happening again."
The tengu warriors standing nearby respectfully nod their heads in your direction once they see you looking, but a certain cold disposition can be felt in their eyes. The commander, the scout, and the cook bid you farewell, as do the Twenty Four Masks, and you start your journey home soon after.
Victoria Hennessee |
