The corridor ahead branches in four directions. North and west,
the tunnels continue unobstructed, but the eastern branch is
blocked with a stout metal grating marked with three crimson
circles within a triangle. A large, white “X” is scrawled in chalk
on the floor in the center of the intersection.
Map is labeled as MACHINES! in my info above. Please place yourselves on the left side of the map. You are entering from the South.
Telos Phane |
Telos advances cautiously.
"This symbol of the three crimson circles inside the triangle...I believe our instructions are not to proceed in that direction. In that case, we should try the north branch," he says.
The warrior, after examining the intersection, continues down the north corridor.

Just before they move forward, a few of the group spot that the 'X' is marking a trap...but the X is actually right after the trigger. The line is right at the end of the hall before it opens to the crossroads. Without the marking, which someone so kindly left for the lot of you, there would definitely have been a bit of trouble, though none of you can quite figure out what the trap does...
Elric Woodsborne |
I am unfamiliar with this kind of trap. Do any of you know how to bypass it?
Elric keeps Anto back with a firm hand, while also looking around to see if he can tell where the trap attacks from.
If possible, take 20 on perception from the closest he can get without setting it off.
Telos Phane |
After his companions have examined the trap, Telos says "If we can't figure out what it does, everyone else stand back. I have one idea, I suppose."
Once everyone is back, the warrior moves forward with his polearm, using it almost like pole to press various spots in the hallway in front of the 'X'. He continues forward in this manner until he reaches the mark.

I'll move slowly and take 20 perception in each square before moving on.
Elric Woodsborne |
Elric makes sure to step over the wire, showing Anto where it is and having him step over it too.
Elric Woodsborne |
Elric chuckles at Ghaenk's unease.
Perhaps next time I will have Anto carry you across, my friend. I'm sure it wouldn't be terribly difficult.
Leb Unin |
Leb carefully steps over the wire. "Nothing to it, Ghaenk. You can handle it!"
Telos Phane |
Telos looks to the north.
"The tracks lead this way...should we continue following them?" he asks.
Didn't we come from the west already? The map made it look like we had...
Ghaenk |
"We've been sent here to test the traps... so far, one has been set off already and the other plainly marked for us. I think we should head west since the north has already been explored. We would be more helpful to the Pathfinder Society to test other parts of this course."
GM Hills |
After ten minutes of wandering down the hallway you come to an L-shaped corridor makes a right angle from the east to north. Just around the bend a dead half-orc sprawls on the ground. Above the corpse, a wooden sledgehammer dangles from a rope beneath an open ceiling panel. Though the head of the mallet is padded, the trap was apparently still lethal to the unfortunate half-orc. A few feet up the corridor another chalk
“X” is scratched on the floor.
Telos Phane |
Telos frowns as he examines the dead half-orc.
survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
"Look at these tracks," he observes. "Six sets of tracks headed north, while this poor fellow was going south."
He looks around at the trap.
"I can't escape the thought that someone has come through here before us and set off the traps. Further, this appears much more lethal than intended. Something does not seem right," the warrior says as he searches the body for additional clues.
Any equipment or items that might give us a clue here?
Elric Woodsborne |
Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Elric pauses, and starts inspecting the body and looking for tracks or whatever may have happened.
Six sets of tracks lead here, one stops at the body. They are probably his. This area seems to be more lethal than it was intended to be. Let's hope that the rest of the people who set this up are safer than him...
Ghaenk |
"If the hammer struck him in the back of the head, then he came from the north... meaning, he didn't come from the entrance to this course. Hmm... I agree something doesn't seem right here. We should proceed very cautiously and expect to run into some people rather than just traps!"
Ghaenk inspects the dagger closely.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Telos Phane |
Telos kneels in thought next to the corpse of the half-orc.
"This poor soul did not die simply from being struck by a padded hammer. He also bears deep gashes...blades killed him, not the hammer. Though whoever killed him also left this finely-crafted dagger...that will fetch a fine price."
The warrior leaves Ghaenk to the dagger, but looks ahead.
"That leads us forward, but with caution," the warrior says as he begins to stride forward to the north. "Let us uncover this mystery..."
Elric Woodsborne |
Gashes... There may be more dangers here than even the group before us knew of. We need to be wary. Stay close together, and keep your attention on your surroundings.
Elric proceeds, his head on a swivel and his hand on Anto's shoulder as they walk together.
Telos Phane |
Telos looks carefully for any way to open the door, tapping different areas with his weapon to see if he can locate a secret panel.

As Telos moves forward to examine the door, it slides open in the middle and the dungeon’s red hue is dramatically accented here with a
fresh coating of blood. Three corpses lie scattered around the room, all hacked apart with great force. The arterial spray from the last moments of their lives spatters the walls and ceiling and pools on the floor. A dim crimson glow spills from a wide archway to the north, casting a garish light upon the faces of the dead. An open chest sits against the eastern wall, with broken links of chain scattered on the floor around it. In the center of the room, seemingly locked in place by the chains at it's feet stands a seemingly mechanized humanoid which turns to the opening of the door and raises it's crossbow.
