Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Ragnar dashes past, arms full of fallen companions.

"Strike then follow! We can hold it at the door. Brother, guillotine trap!" the huge Dorn says, using an old code worked out in their days surviving in the cursed ruins of Nalford."

Eyvindr

Spoiler:
Someone baits it into trying to push through the door to attack. we let it start to push through, then the rest of us close the door on it's head, setting it up to be easy pickings

Ragnar sets Chops and Pete down next to Gilian and sets his spear in the doorway, prepared to hold of the monster.

The rat will stop to deal with you and Ragnar first, but you had enough time to put yourself in position to attack it, so your regular attack missed but AoA hit.

Black vardatch comes down on the rat's head cleaving away part of its skull. Dull green slime pours down the side of rat's head and dips on the stone floor with a disgusting stench.

Eyvindr is down. He is at -6 or something like that and the rat broke his sword. Check posts above. Your turn to attack.

When Eyvinder doe not respond, Ragnar looks, noticing for the first time that his brother is down. Time slows for him.

"No.

The air around him chills, his breath fogs, frost crawls up the bars of the prison and across the floor. The spectral torches following him dim and still.

"Get behind me." he says slow and measured, his rage cold and still. "When I say, slam and hold the door."

Oh, hell... the black bird says as it darts into the room, flying erratic patterns around the beast's head.

"Better listen to 'im, lady." he squawks.

"Hey, ugly! he flaps at the fell creature. "Come and git me!"

Muni is at full defense

The rat is not charging. In fact, it's going slowly and deliberately. It is your turn to attack him. If you decide not to, it will try to sunder your spear.

Giian uses her action to heal Pete (see post above). Pete is now at +1HP.

Attacking it is then

attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 damage 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

and AoO if it tries to get past.

attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 damage 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Solvistania feels Chops life stopp oozing from his body, as her minor healing spell takes effect. She whispers, "I shall return, Chops.".

Turning her attention to the rat creature, she feels her body suffering the effects of her wanton spellcasting, but she is heedless of the cost, and summons another bolt at the creature. Magic Missile 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Dark Archive

Ragnar's mighty strikes penetrate the thick hide and the spear loges deep into the Fell Rat's brain. Monster stumbles, but with the last traces of its strength it lurches on barbarian. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 251d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 151d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Ragnar is at -3 But before it manages to clamp its jaws on Ilona's leg, Solvi's spell hits it and it's brain explodes over fallen Dorn and standing Sarcossan.

Woot! Congrats!

After Solvistania heals Chops and whispers to him, he weakly tries to sit up but only raises his head and responds "Sorry...Solvi." before letting his head drop back on the rocks. "Thank...you," he weakly whispers to her.

Holy crap, that was actually an intense read. Bravo.!

Solvistania, despite the numbing exhaustion filling her body all the way to her bones, walks over to Ragnar, and cast Cure Minor Wounds on him, stabilizing him.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

"Hey, uh, Gilian?" the raven says from the top of the door, "could you, uh, not heal Eyvindr?"

Solvistania sighs, her voice ragged with exhaustion, the battle had been tough on her, tougher than any fight she had even dreamed of partaking in, drained her beyond what her body could stand, and it was only by force of will that kept her going.

She turns to Muni, flying above, and whispers, "No, Muni. Gilian can do nothing for him...Eyvindr...is...Fell. Our healing would destroy him. Perhaps Ragnar knows of a way?"

I think headless Sky'tor needs to become a re-occuring villain.

Ilona barely reacts to the gore that now covers her. Her eyes pass over the fallen as if checking for the definitive signs of life.

"Good job every body, butif this wasn't what that bastard sumoned, we need to get out of this room."

Replacing her sword on her back she reaches down and hooks her arms under Ragnar's dragging the massive warrior through the door.

"We need to get everyone back to the cells and let Gillian do what she can. While we're at it see if we can wake the prisoner....and the sacrifice, I have a feeling we'll need everybody on their feet before this is over."

Her eyes pass across her still mobile friends. Beaten up, battered, scared, hurt.

Her voice becomes warmer, richer, like a comforting embrace.

"We did good here, we met eveil and we won. One of us fell, but they could not claim him. And they will not have any other this day. I swear it. We are united in blood. We fight together, laugh and cry together. Before this is over the shadow will know fear."

The words echo in the now quiet room, a ring of prophecy striking a cord in each listener's soul.

I have known from the beginning, he he. Bite me.

Solvistania nods at both Ilona, and Muni. "You are right he need not be told now, but he must learn the truth, eventually."

She brings Chops back to cosciousness and murmers "Chops, please take Gilain and the rest of the wounded back to the cells.."

She then approaches the beautiful mother like figure,"Ilona, I have some healing skills, to awaken the dwarf, please come with me."

"Sure," Ilona says smiling at Solvistania. Placing a hand on her shoulder she looks into the spellcasters eyes, so tired and seemingly fragile yet possessed of a burning inner strength.

"You probably save both my and Ragnar's lives today. Thank you. You should be proud."

Solvistania manages a weak smile, and takes Ilona's hand, leaning on her for support, "I could not have done this without you, Ilona. You, and everyone who has fought, and died to protect me. I am no warrior. The Shadow has suffered a blow here but they will be back here. I hope the sacrifice we made here is worth it."

Um, no, I did not survive... Undead are destroyed once they reach 0 hit points -- no negatives/unconsciousness for them. And truth is, I died fair and square and would rather leave it at that... See post in the discussion thread...

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

As the wounded are brought together, Gilian sees to them, her face drawn by the amount of damage the rat-thing has dealt.
For Pete: Cure light wounds for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
For Chops: Heal check 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 to put him back to 1 HP then
CLW for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
For Ilona: CLW for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
At last, she comes to Ragnar hesitantly: Heal check 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 to put him back to 1 HP then
CLW for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
That’s 6 rounds.

When Ragnar starts to move, she murmurs to him: ”Ragnar, you just saw your brother fall to the Rat blows. There is truth and illusion in that. He was already fallen long ago. He was dead and rose as a fell. One of those who plague the land and kill the living. Now he is on his way again. I can’t do anything for him but speed up his passing.
But you should do it. I know you will tell me that he was still fighting for us but when will he turn mad and start attacking all just to feed? Come with me Ragnar, let’s speed his passing.

This post was written before Eyvindr added his post and I think he is right in that undead are destroyed a 0HP. I'll comment on the rest in the OOC thread.

male Dorn Channeler 1 (spiritual)

Whispers can be herd from the cell where the chained Dorn resides.

"Is this another dream?..."

There is a long pause.

"Well, then what should I do?"

Dark Archive

Ragnar:
The Dorn sleeps or perhaps he is awake, or maybe he lost consciousness from the loss of blood. He sees his father and his father before him and all of his ancestors stretching back to Peluria. At the front stands his brother, but no longer sad. He smiles and his hair is once again golden blond. In one hand he holds the crown of Nalford and in the other the hilt of his broken blade. "All hail Ragnar Deathspeaker, Warlock-Prince of Nalford, Herald of Vigdir!" he thunders. "You are now the last, little brother. Take these... and make me proud." And then, he fades away.

Ragnar's brows knit, and he looks in the direction of his brother's body. He stands quietly without speaking to Gilian and walks to where it lies. He does not look at it. He looks straight ahead, into empty space.

"Is it true? Are you dead?"

he pauses.

"Did you know before?"

He continues pausing, as if he is having a conversation with his brother.

"I see. No, I didn't know either. Or maybe I didn't want to. It doesn't matter any more."

"I believe I can bring you back again. Like before."

"Tired!? What the blazes does that mean?"

"I suppose that's true. You really haven't slept in years, have you."

"Well you're not done yet. You might be dead, but I still need you."

"No, not like that. Not right now, anyway. Maybe someday. For now, you can at least help me keep an eye on the children. If I am going to be doing your job, you are damn well going to do mine."

Ragnar smiles, soft but full of the honest warmth of a happy child.

"Good, now let's clean up this mess."

His brother's broken sword lifts out of his brother's hand, moving, floating without aid through the air. It hangs for a moment in front of the huge Dorn before he takes it, gripping the bone handle with fierce resolve.

"That's a handy trick. Another good reason to keep you around."

He looks at the blade

"What is it with you and giving me swords that I can't use yet?"

The Crown of Nalford follows the sword, floating into the air. Ragnar takes it, and pushes hit up around his left arm, snug against his massive bicep.

He continues, pulling equipment and armor off of his brother's body, talking to empty air. Objects around him continue to lift and float, helping him like an extra set of hands.

Shortly it is done.

Ragnar takes a strange pair of clippers, like gardening tools, and removes his brother's right index finger. Then the head.

He drags his brother's corpse, and Sky'Tor's to the alter. He leans them back to back before it and lays out the fallen dwarves in rows before them, their weapons piled at his fallen comrades' feat.

With a smith's chisel he carves a single large rune into the face of the alter. The Dornish symbol for justice.

At it's center he places the bone carving he had been working on at the stone circle. The tower. The symbol of Nalford.

Pete blinks into wakefulness. Hearing the Fell northener is truly dead now, he grunts in mute satisfaction, but says nothing.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Watching Ragnar, Ilona's eyes glisten with tears that she knows he will not shed for his brother.

Solvistania sees the passing of Fell, with a feeling of ambivalence. She well knew the dangers of travelling with a Fell, but she also knew Ragnar depended on his brother, like a young wolf pup depended on its older sibling for guidance and protection.

She walks over to Ragnar, and says quietly, glancing meaningfully at Ilona, "We are here for you, Ragnar, now. Let us help you fill the void left by your brothers passing. You are no longer alone, my friend."

She turns to Ilona, and says, "Time is running out, we must hurry and see to the dwarf sacrifice, now."

Ragnar looks quizzically at the tiny elf-maid, as if he simply has no idea what she means, but does not ask questions. As the two women move to the unconscious dwarven sacrifice, he collects Sky'tor's weapons and carries them back to Gilian and the semi-conscious imprisoned Dorns.

As he walks he talks to the air, "Yes, I know. I think she believes that because you are dead, it means you are gone. Strange."

He kneels next to Gilian and Chops.

"This was my brother's. Perhaps you can make use of it." he says handing the healer a well-made sling and a pouch of bullets.

Dark Archive

Very well played, Ragnar. 1 Fate Point.

Chops runs his fingers along his scalp where the rat monster tore through it with its fangs. He is dismayed when he realizes that chunks of hair are missing. He grunts as he attempts to stand, newly scarred skin across his chest.

He stands and thanks Gillian, then pats Ragnar on the back but says nothing. He limps over to Solvistania and says, "Thank you back there. I know you said be careful, but... I thought to buy us time." And to illona and Pete, "They are still out there though. I'll get the dwarf and bring him back here if you stand guard." He goes to turn away to walk back into the chamber before turning his head to Solvistania and winks. "Nice moves back there. Way to kick monster ass!"

He walks into the chamber, favoring his left leg before noticing his urutuk on the chamber floor. He leans to pick up the hatchet and hang it in his holder before continuing to the unconscious dwarf. He looks around and listens for a second trying to determine if any of the dwarves or minions are coming back...

Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Then he picks up the dwarf into a fireman's carry and shuffles back to the group quickly. He lays the dwarf down next to Solvistania and asks "Can you bring him back as well?"

Then he picks up one of Sky'tor's knives and proceeds to saw off the rest of his hair. After all, he has to stay pretty.

Ragnar hands Chops a thin skinning knife, it's forward curved blade honed to a razors edge. He lowers his hood, runs one hand over his smooth scalp. "Keep it. I have my brother's now."

Solvistania looks at the retreating form of Chops, and for the first time notices his body and how...fascinating he looked. After he winked at her, she felt weak all of the sudden, not like what she was used to before. She murmers at his retreating form, It was nothing.

Once Chops returns with the unconscious dwarf, she thinks, I certainly hope your life was worth the cost we paid to rescue you. Two of our fellowship gone...another turned traitor, Zafina, should I find you, I shall feast on your remains.

She leans forward to examine him closer Heal take 10, total 15, and casts a minor healing spell on him. Cure Minor Wounds, heal 1 hp.

Gilian observes Ragnar monologue with a frown on her face. Is he really hearing these spirits? If so and if he can't shut them out, he'll need to be looked after, less he gets mad. If not, he is already there.

Gilian finishes packing back her suplies and hears the few words of the prisoner.
"Oh, I had forgotten about this one."

As the second inconscious prisonner is brought back and tended by Solvistania, she shoulders her pack and turns to the group.
