Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Sky speaks from his position ahead of the party, "We should really send a scouting party ahead to check for a safe haven". "Is anyone else up to a quick stealthy sortie into the darkness ahead"? "Preferably someone light on their feet, and that sees well in darkness".

"I shall accompany you, snow kin," says Eyvindr to Sky'tor, now satisfied that Ragnar is safe for the time being.

The man-bear allows the elf to take the lead, and follows a few steps behind him...

Stealth: 18 + 4 = 22 (24 vs. Fell); Perception: 19 + 6 = 25 (27 vs. Fell).

Eyvindr, Sky and Chops.:
Silent as death herself Eyvindr strides through the tunnel watching for any signs of Fell. In time, he reaches the end of the tunnel and the large stone doors chiseled with the sun and moon. They seem not to be part of the tunnel. In fact, they could not be more different. The tunnel is rough hewn from the living rock, but the door are painstakingly carved from the white stone - it is obvious even to Eyvindr's untrained eye. But then, as he watches the door, Eyvindr spies feral glinting near the ceiling of the tunnel, but several yards away from the door. At that same moment a deadly winter shade and powerful dworg join him and stop, seeing the same evil embers on the ceiling at the end of the tunnel as him.

nightflier, Eyvindr, and Sky:
Chops comes to a stop, barely breathing. He leans close to Sky and whispers in a low a voice as he can muster, "What do you suppose those lights are?"

Male Human (Dorn) Wildlander / 1

Nightflier, Chops and Sky:

Spoiler:

"I have no idea," mumbles Eyvindr in response to Chops's question, holding his sword with his left hand hand while cautiously reaching up towards the mysterious embers with his other hand, trying to determine whether they radiate heat.

Readying an attack, in case the embers are the eyes of creatures... Perception: 20 + 4 = 24 (26 vs. Fell); Initiative, if necessary: 17 + 7 = 24... why do I never roll so well in my other PbPs or when I'm playing in table top game???

** spoiler omitted **

Eyvindr, Sky and Chops:
Indeed, those ember lights are the eyes of Fell clutching with deformed talons to the ceiling. A long time ago the creature was perhaps a dwarf, judging by its short stature and build, but now it's emaciated monstrosity with slimy skin and no hair or beard, with large ears as in bat and black snakelike tongue that constantly undulates and drips with some oily liquid. As soon as it sees you, the creature rushes towards you along the ceiling, and then drops in the middle of you three, not giving you any chance to react. It's talons lash at the elf first, and it's tongue strikes at the dworg, revealing a sharp sting on the end of it.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 91d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 71d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 1d20 ⇒ 151d3 ⇒ 3

Sky dashes beneath the talons and goes to strike the undead, but the black tongue hits Chops in the chest.

Chops, Fortitude check, please. Initiative order is:
Sky
Eyvindr
Chops (if he makes the save)

nightflier, Sky, and Eyvindr:

Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
.
If that last d20 roll is the to hit, it should have missed me. Not that I mind a little tongue action ; P
.
Just occurred to me that it may be a touch attack.

Solvistania's breathing gradually eases and assumes a regular pattern. She opens her eyes and gazes unfocusedly on the healer, whispering, "Where an I?"

Eyvindr's roars can be heard echoing back down the tunnel... "FELL!!!!!!!"

Nightflier, Chops, Sky:

Spoiler:

OMG!!! Nat 20 + 6 + 2 (vs. Fell) + 2 (flanking) = 30!!! Crit. confirmation: 13 + 6 + 2 + 2 = 23. Damage = 14 + 4 + 2 (vs. Fell) = 20... how long will this run of exceptional luck last, I wonder?

The man-bear swings his blade with both hands with all his might in a high arc and into the back of the undead dwarf.

Male Human (Dorn) Wildlander / 1

Nightflier:

Spoiler:

Just a reminder... if that Fell dwarf was within 10' of Eyvindr when the former was on the ceiling, then Eyvindr definitely would have know him to be Fell as a result of his Sense Dead 10' radius heroic path ability.

With a roar that is heard down the tunnel, mighty Dorn decapitates a Fell already wounded by Sky's knife. The others hear the sound of combat to late to come to the assistance.

Can we see that far? How dark is it around us?

Pete scampers down the passage, ready to confront any other Fell that might be attacking.

Chops attempts to grab ahold of the tongue that just stung him.

Everybody 50 XP

Chops feels the sharp sting and suddenly looses conscience and falls to the ground like a sack of turnips.

Pete rushes to aid his companions, but arrives only in time to see Dorn's mighty sword stroke. His sharp sense of smell tells him that there are no more Fell in the tunnel.

Those in front of the carved gates can see a large hole in the tunnel ceiling above the gate.

"Hurry! Bring light" he shouts down the tunnel.

Solvistania staggers down the corridor, still not fully recovered from her exertions. She does not cast any spells, afraid to exert herself unnecessarily. When she sees the unconscious form lying down, she rushes to his side."Give me some light, now, damnit!"

Sky and Solvistania try to revive fallen Chops, but to no avail. Gillian then rushes to him. "Again?" She touches him on the neck and peals his eyelids. "He is paralyzed, probably by something that got into his bloodstream through this puncture. He seems to be fine, but he will need to wear this off by himself. I don't know how long it will take. About a day, I reckon."

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Rushing forward Ilona stands guard as the others attand to Chops, relaxing slightly at Gillian's prognosis. She kneels at Chops side placing her hand on his chest to feel the slight movement of his breathing and gives him a heartwarming smile.

"Don't worry, you'll be up and about protecting us all in no time." She grins mischeviously, sure that he can hear her.

"Bet you wish you'd gotten hit by darts instead," leaning forward she whispers in his ear.

Spoiler:
"What was that crack earlier about sucking the poison out?"

With a wink at the paralyzed Dworg she get to her feet.

"Ok guy's we need to find a secure place to hole up big time, with Chops down and Gillian exhausting herself healing us we aren't in the best shape to face something nasty." She looks over at Solvistania, a fleeting glance but one filled with concern.

"Besides, we all need some rest and a little time to clear our heads. It's prety intense down here."

Solvistania, on hearing Ilona's words, tries to rise to her feet, but old memories crowd into her mind. She makes an effort to resist the feeling of claustrophobia engulfing her, trying to concentrate on her breathing, an old exercise she learned long ago. It seems to help as her panic subsides.

With some effort Sky climbs up the rough wall and from about two feet takes a peek through the large hole. He can not see far, but it seems to him that there is some chamber beyond the door and a lot of rat bones piled on the other side.

Seeing nothing, Sky drops to the ground, and immediately begins to look for a way to open the door from the inside.

Solvistania walks over to the Dorn, and puts her hand on his shoulder, "Such a tale should be saved for times where friends can help you chase those demons away."

Rope, whats that?

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Without a word Ilona reaches into her pack, bringing out a coil of rope. Tying one end around her waist, she tosses the other end over the side and braces herself, resolutely coiling some of the slack around her right arm.

Back on track

After so many castings, Gilian feels light-headed and puzzled by the strength of her last healing.
"I had never done so many healing in a single day until now. But I remember my mother..." at these words, her voice cracks and she stops for a few seconds as if catching her breath before going on with a colder voice. "Well, she told me that after too many castings, you use you own vital energy to fuel magic and can harm yourself. I am not sure I can cast anymore safely today, but it seems that practising enhances the magic strength : my last healing seemed to be more powerful than what I ever did. Most of us still carry wounds, we should rest before going on."

Waiting for the scouting party to return, she sits down to rest and muse about what they have discovered today.
"I've been wondering why this ghost elf would send us to free his brother as he seemed quite powerful. Now, I'm beginning to understand why. These doors were made by dwarves and can only be opened by dwarven blood, they may even stop non dwarven spirits and that's why he could not get there himself. but I'm still wondering why the dwarves would sacrifice 7 of them to seal that place. What do you think, Ilona and Solvistania ?"

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Holding the rope, Ilona glances over her shoulder at Gillian holding a gaze on her as she swallows her moment of sorrow.

'We've all been through too much damnit. Damn the shadow!'

"Well seven must have some sort of significance, and the power of blood magic is mentioned in old stories. There's something to that, I get the feeling the magic we're seeing here is really old and powerful."

Solvistania looks over at Gilian, and seeing the stricken look in her eyes when she mentions her mother, feels a pang of loss echoing in her own soul. She never had a mother to hold her or give hugs while growing up, and...the people who had raised her...she refused to think of them as family.

"Gilian, I believe you are right when it comes to the magic sapping your strength, but how did I learn such a spell? The knowledge came unbidden." A look of confusion and fear crosses her face, then she continues, This place is frought with evil, but I feel there is something else here as well, something the dwarves felt was too dangerous for the knowledge of it to spread.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"Which means its something we can use to finally hurt the shadow."

Ragnar is going to try to get a bearing on the spirits of the dead dwarves he sensed earlier.

From the inside it seems that the hole in the ceiling was made by undead rats just like those you and others killed. It appears that the door was never meant to be opened. Behind you is a large square room filled with broken pottery. It was obviously some kind of storage room long ago.

Ragnar stands next to Solvistania and finally locks his gaze in the direction to the large door.

"They lie beyond the door. Whether trapped or holding like a siege, I know not, but with them will lie our answers."

The big man slowly reaches out to her and gently touches her dress where it had been torn in the fight. He whispers something in an ancient dialect of Dornish. As he moves his hand across the tear, it vanishes, the fabric woven fresh and new.

"For now, we should rest. My brother and Muni will keep watch over us."

Solvistania stares at her newly mended dress, and then says, faintly, choking with emotion, "Thank you, Ragnar."

She lays down on the ground next to the still paralyzed form of Chops, and murmers, "Sleep well, my friend.". She then curls up in almost a fetal position, using her pack as a pillow, before drifting into slumber.

Are we resting on the threshold of the door then, or are we going to wait for Sky'tor to determine whether he can open it from the other side?

I was under the impression we were waiting here because Chops is paralyzed, and Sky could not open the door yet. I'll bet we need Chops to open the door.
