Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Solvistania once the rats have been slain around her, will fire another eldritch bolt at the mother rat up ahead.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

Initiative 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

I think there are two rats between Chops and Pete that haven't attacked us yet. I am going to roll for Chops attack of one now.

Chops hatchet sparks off the rocks. "Damn it!" he exclaims as he reverse his grip and grasps it in both hands for another swing at the elusive rat.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

And just in case, Initiative for the new threat: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

With a mighty swing, Chops chops the rat in half.

Ragnar, if Eyvindr doesn't roll anything today, can you take over his actions until he gets back?

Male Human (Dorn) Wildlander / 1

Sorry for the absence, folks... Have been spending most of my time house hunting over the past few days, and have a number of family gatherings to attend this weekend as well, so sporadic may remain sporadic until Monday...

As Sky'tor yells for the Dorns to watch their backs, he turns and stares in shock as the mother rat makes her way down the tunnel towards him. He mutters a curse and then braces himself, holding his bastard sword two-handed in a high guard, as Ragnar comes to his side... "Come taste my sword, foul beast... Let me show you the way back to the realm of the dead, where you should have stayed..."

Thanks for rolling initiative, Ragnar. Eyvindr readies action... will strike as soon as mama enters a threatened square... Attack: 12 + 6 + 2 = 20; Damage: 10 + 4 + 2 = 16.

Looking back at the monstrous rat attacking the Dorn brothers and Sky, Ilona arches an eyebrow. Still supporting Solvistania, she glances down to meet the spellcaster's eyes.

"How bad is it? Gillian do you have any healing left? What're the odds those things were poisoned or dieased?"

Solvistania, after loosing her energy at the mother-rat, turns to Ilona and murmers, "You certainly know how to cheer me up, Ilona. I fear we will find out soon. I am more upset about my dress getting torn by those filthy creatures!"

Two arrows have hit it's blind eyes. Magic has singed it's undead flesh. Sword-blow has cleaved it's ribs of - but the creature steadily moves towards Ragnar as if drawn to him. Ignoring Eyvindr, mother-rat lashes at younger Dorn.

Initiative order is:
Sky
Eyvindr
Mother-rat
Ragnar
Sky used two actions to loose two arrows. Mother-rat moved to Eyvindr. Ragnar moved to Eyvindr. Eyvindr attacked. Rat now attacks, than Ragnar. Then it's next round. Sky then attacks.

The above description takes into account the effects of Eyvindr's readied attack, correct?

Eyvindr screams as he lashes out at the undead horror, and again as it bypasses him to attack Ragnar. "NOOOOOOO!!! AWAY FROM MY BROTHER -- THIS WAY SHADOW FILTH!!!"

The elder Dorn swings again with all his might at the gigantic rat...

" Sorry 'tania but better safe now than sorry later right? Gillian can you patch her up?"

She calls back over her shoulder, "Chops, Pete, I'm sure you guys've got this handled, looks like Sky and the Brothers Grim need a little backup."

Breaking into a full run, Verdatch trailing behind her in a low grip she dashes towards her allies facing the hideous undead beast.

A few feet before it she throws herself into a skid, momentum arrested and directed into a viscious upward swing that lifts her body off the ground as she turns with the blow. Think dragon punch with a greatsword

She looks back at the Dworg and the halfling, particularly the dworg, watching them, ready to assist them, if needed. If not, then she will loose another bolt at the mother-rat. Magic Missile 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 damage.

Nightflier, Gilian is not available to post until next weekend, can you DM PC her? I could use a healing spell, he he

Sky's dagger tears a gash in the beast's flank, but Eyvindr's sword stroke takes it's head of.

"Hells ya, that was exciting!" Chops shouts as he shakes the gore off of his hatchet. He walks past Solvistania, Pete and Gillian and says, "Way to kick ass back there!" and gives the elorg maiden a quick fist bump as he makes his way up to check out the giant rat thing. He stops next to the Dorns and Sky'tor, and high fives Illona.

"Good one guys. That rat is nuts, huh," he says to the group. Then he regards Ragnar's bloody form. "Wow Ragnar! How the hell you still standing?"

I can't help myself...I hope you don't mind if I think of it as a donkey punch ; P

Solvistania stumbled a bit on the contact, and shoots him a momentary glare, before realizing he meant no harm by the action. Looking closer at him, she feels...strange. Her body felt warm and flushed for some reason.

Now that the combat is over, she felt weak and unsteady, and sinks to the ground, overcome by a wave of exhaustion. She wasn't even sure she would be able to cast such a potent spell. The greater power spells were supposedly inaccessible to her, but the knowledge for such was still in her. It was the first time she had cast such powerful magic, and it was far more draining than she had thought. What troubled her though, was how she even knew it.

The big dorn breathes a heavy exhalation and the howling in the air around him quiets to the occasional scrape and moan that seems to follow him everywhere. He looks down at himself without much of a grimace, despite the horrible wounds bloodying his form. "It must look worse than it is." he says simply. Ignoring the trail of blood he leaves, Ragnar walks to Gillian. "Healer, as long as you think it safe for the injured to move, I'd recommend we find a place to rest long enough to give our wounds a thorough cleaning. These creatures were bound to carry all manor of filth."

Muni flaps down near the carcass of the giant rat. [i]"I hate it when the only things that die are already rotten. What a waste."[/i}

Ilona smiles at Chops' enthusiasm, returning his high five. Looking around at her companions she is happy to see how well they work together.

She looks over to the big Dorn brothers and walks up to Ragnar.

"Hey big guy, let Gillian pacth you up. And don't argue with me!"

She looks over her shoulder to Solvistania and worry flickers across her face. Going over to Chops she whispers.

"We need to keep an eye on her, she pushes herself too hard. She's tough as steel, but fragile as glass at the same time."

Ilona Ebonblade wrote:

"Definitely. Though the only way to get tougher is to push yourself, within limits. But, we should not let the enemy again get to close to her; and Gillian. Their skills in magic are vital."

Eyvindr yells triumphantly as he beheads the enormous pack leader. He kicks the severed head in disgust back down the tunnel, spits loudly on its carcass, then turns his attention to his companions. While Gillian is busy treating Solvistania, the elder Dorn wastes no time reaching Ragnar's side and lending him an arm for support, nodding at both Ilona and Muni as he does so. "Brother," he whispers, "I would say that those wounds are as serious as they look." Then, raising his voice a little and smiling wanly in the darkness, he adds: "You stood toe to toe and survived a mauling from a Fell rat the size of a bear... that would make a tale worthy for immortalization by the skalds of old! I am proud of you, little brother!"

Then, shifting his gaze back to the decapitated giant mother rat, he adds in a more pensive tone: "I did not expect the mountain fey to keep such... monstrous vermin as guard animals, even when alive. Could they have found a way into this accursed place from the outside and been corrupted by the evil within? Or...???"

Pete carefully wipes the gore from his fingernails, unable to conceal his disgust.

"Awful, just awful. Finish healing, then we go."

Ragnar stands silently, then opens his mouth like he is going to say something, but then closes it again. Slowly, he simply smiles. The impassive mask he normally carries himself with gone for a moment, he looks young, alive and full of the proud joy of a child being praised by one they regard as a hero.

"When my Naming Day finally comes, I'll let you tell the story. I could never do it myself." he finally says shyly.

Gilian walks towards big Dorn and gently touches him above the heart. "You were very brave", she says. Green strength of mother of all seeps slowly into Ragnar, closing his wounds and stopping the flow of his blood on the stone. Cure light wounds 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Her eyes seem to shine a bit with fever and she looks surprised at the power that flows through her. Gilian than turns and stretches her hand to touch Solvi. Cure light wounds 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13. Healing strength of Aryth surges towards the elorg as well, once again seemingly more powerful than it should be.

"Who else is hurt and how badly?" asks the healer. "I can heal one more time today. After that..."

Healing power washes all of Solvi's wounds away. Even her weariness is gone. For a moment, her powerful intellect catches and dissects the fact the she cast - not once but twice - the spell that she should not have and that Gilian seems to be more powerful healer than she should be, but than her youth and inexperience catches up to her and even with her wounds healed, she collapses on the tunnel floor fighting for air.

"Brother, you look like you might benefit from a second of Gillian's touches," murmurs Eyvindr to Ragnar once the healer has turned her attention again to Solvistania. He looks on in concern as the frail red-eyed elf maiden collapses after supposedly having been healed...

When Sky'tor mentions the need to find a safe resting place, the elder Dorn can't help but grumble a skeptical reply. "A safe haven? In this pit of darkness and undeath? That sounds like a cruel joke... there can be no such thing here..."

Ragnar's chest is so big it counts as plural... ;)

Ragnar looks down in mute surprise at the pale lines where the gaping holes in his flesh had been only moments ago and again murmurs his thanks. As convincingly as he had been ignoring the pain, the difference between the big man with it and without it is immediately apparent. His physical behaviors do not change noticeably, but the eerie, angry noises that fill the air around him almost immediately change to the distant laughter of children and the pitter-pat of bare feet on the stone floor.

Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5

Sky speaks from his position ahead of the party, "We should really send a scouting party ahead to check for a safe haven". "Is anyone else up to a quick stealthy sortie into the darkness ahead"? "Preferably someone light on their feet, and that sees well in darkness".
