Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Good, I'm in the process of updating the character. The healer PrC you designed is also a good fit to Gilian, so no need to redo it.

Male dwarven kineticist 3

Forgive the random changes of tense, kind of wrote this all out pretty quickly. I am going to be on a plane tomorrow so any questions might not get answered until thursday.

Concept/History gubbins:
Righty ho then, concept in a nutshell is a Carunsil ex-maezulin from the Autumn maudre who has an deep connection to the woods after a run in with the fabled green man of the Mosswood.
I imagine the green man to be something similar to the swamp thing from the DC universe, a nature/plant elemental protector of the forest. With the orcs slowly burning and cutting their way into the great trees he saw a reason to heal a mortally injured elf and in the process set him on the path of becoming another elemental protector of the woods to help him in his task.

So yeah, Arandion (name subject to change) gets healed by the green man, instructed in his duties to protect the forest and then unceremoniously dumped on the outskirts of the Mosswood (green man is known for liking his solitude). Goes back to work as a ambusher, scout and what have you for the Autumn eretha and does well. Sometimes hears whispers in the rustle of leaves and creak of tree branches and learns to listen as they unerringly direct him to the location of orcish scouts and raiders.
Also finds it much easier to blend into the woodland and a few times even surprises his squadmates. As time goes by however the whispering of the trees becomes more and more common, until it is a near constant background noise in his head. He also begins feeling what the trees feel, the delightful nourishing warmth of sunlight or the slow joy when a new set of seeds/nuts are ready to be released into the world. Unfortunately with these new shared feelings come problems, distantly and weakly at first, but with ever increasing strength he can feel the fear and pain of each tree the orcs fell, each sapling that is ripped up at the roots and used to feed their fires.

When the his erethor is assigned closer to the fields of ash and blood, the pain increases tenfold and the whispers become roars of pain, anger and anguish. Very quickly Arandion is unable to sleep, unable to think, unable to function. His squadmates dragging or carrying him as he screamed and whimpered at the shared pain. After no more than a fortnight of this it was decided by the erethor commanders that Arandion should return to Caradul for reassignment.

As he moved away from the ravaged forest the pain and noise faded but not quite to the level it had been before. He still found it difficult to sleep or to concentrate on any task. He sought out the green man, hoping that he would have some way to help him, but after weeks in the Mosswood he found no sign of him and eventually had to give up.
After some discussion between his family and the lord who commanded the Autumn maudre it was decided that he would be assigned a placement with the Erunsil, far away from the destruction that tormented him.

Arandion travelled to the Veradeen a few years ago and has grown used to the coldest wood. Leaving the trees of the caraheen had finally silenced the cries and pain that filled his head and the trees of the Veradeen were mostly quiet, not wasting their precious energy on speaking to an elf not even born of their wood.
He misses the Caraheen, the sunlight and the great trees but fears to return with the memory of the cries and pain still fresh in his memory.

Let's recap:

30 point buy
5th level characters
Feats allowed: Midnight and Feats document that I've provided.
Channelers remain unchanged. Other classes are modified.
You can keep your old traits or choose new ones.
You keep your backstory bonus feat or trait, but you can have another bonus feat if you write another story that covers seven year long interval between old game and the new game.
Every one of you gets a heroic path tailored to his specific character. There will be an explanation why you can not choose your own heroic path.
You are limited to one companion/pet/familiar/cohort.

This is new:

You'll get 5th level covenant power - but after that you'll receive no more covenant powers. You'll have to search for covenant items, magic items or whatever.

Dark Archive

Ilona, do you plan for your character to be more combat oriented, party buffer or party face? I need to know that, because I need to plan your new heroic path.

Dark Archive

Guys, I would like for you to share your thoughts about the development of your characters, new builds and roles you wish to play in the party. That would help others in their builds.

Male Black Blood Dwarf Fighter 5

Just caught that the forum was back. Is it too late for me to hop in? I'd be up for changing character, as I had originally planned for Sorok to stay in the Kaladruns.

Sorok Hamfael wrote:

You're just in time.

Male Black Blood Dwarf Fighter 5

Awesome! So would you prefer that Sorok eventually showed up with the rest of the group or that a new character took his place?

Dark Archive

You have both options. It's up to you, really. The party now has:

Casters:

Solvistania
Gilian
Muni

Half-casters/Half-DPS:

Ilona

Tanks:

Duncan

DPS:

Chops
Sky'Tor

Perhaps it would be best to consult the rest of the party.

Dark Archive

@All

By clicking on my profile you can now access the House Rules document (traits, hit points etc.), Feats document and reworked Fighter and Barbarian classes. Races document will go up soon.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Honestly, Ilona's role has always been a bit of all three, she can stand on the front line although not quite on paar with Duncan or Sorok, she works well as the party face and can buff while fighting.

Dark Archive

Okay, I'll try to keep it like that.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

For some reason I seem to have not recorded the 4th level bone item power. Need to select a fighter feat for level 5.

Also there was some discussion of her arcane bond with Requiem. I'm assuming item familiar is now off the table? With arcane bond as a 5th level character she can apply a magic weapon property as if she had craft magical arms and armor.

Is there amonsgt your allowed feats any way to replicate item familiar ar grant the weapon sentience? As an alternative, the spirit of Ragnar's blade could have been absorbed into Ilona's (obviously requiring backstory) to ensure the Dornish memories carry on.

This would seal the Honorary Valkyr status , esecially if most of her time she has one of the Vigdir on her shoulder.

Raven Spiritual Channeler 5

I had always thought of the skull-carved ruby that had been in Sorrow's pommel as the focus of the weapon's power.

If Ilona had put that into her own blade, I can see this happening pretty easily.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

She definitely would. If Ragnar was lost to her between herself and Muni's none too sublte coaxing she would take up the cause of seeing his nation rise from the ashes.

A combination of that with Sorrow's latent sentience could result in an evolution of Sorrow's personality or a new personality with the identity known as Requiem.

You need to check out the new Fighter. You get Fighter Talents that can allow you to greatly customize your character. I'm thinking Eldritch Knight talent especially. Also, Sarcosans are a bit different now. I'll put the Races document in my profile in an hour or two.

Now, about the Requiem:

I'm planning to introduce new feats with time and to remove many from that Kirthfinder feats document. Among the feats that I plan to add will surely be Item Familiar, Extra Familiar, Ghost Sight - the feats that were crucial to some of your characters. But that will not happen right away. Perhaps in several months.

But there is a simple way to give intelligence to the Requiem - I can make it a black blade, like in Magus class. Well, more purplish-black blade in the Requiem's case :) Powers that it has right now are pretty similar to the black blade anyway. If that suits you, I can create a heroic path for you that will make you a kind of magus/jedi.

One thing, though: if Requiem gains intelligence, his personality will most certainly be male. Perhaps the male side of Ilona, dark and brooding, instead of sensual and charming.

Dark Archive

Races documents is added to my profile.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

The blackblade would definitely work since Requiem already has an arcane pool as we have it now, the male personality I can live with although Ilona would preserve Sorrow's awareness at all costs. Perhaps almost as a familiar for Muni.

Dark Archive

Well, Sorrow became a ghost of a girl when the sword that housed her was destroyed. None of the ghosts that followed Ragnar are gone. He was their focus on Aryth, so they were able to manifest near him, but even if he would to die, the ghost themselves would not be gone - just unable to manifest.

And we don't know what happened with Ragnar. Is he alive, dead, undead or whatever.

Anyway, when Sorrow the Sword was destroyed, I offered to Ragnar to have Sorrow reborn as the first new member of his clan in almost one hundred years. Since she is a spirit now, you can find or make her a body. She could perhaps be an adopted daughter of Ilona and Ragnar and an apprentice to Muni, or even Ilona. Perhaps she is the future of Ragnar's clan?

I would not allow her as familiar - but perhaps as a channeler cohort via Leadership feat.

Dark Archive

In unrelated news:

I've finished heroic path for Sky and sent it to him. Chops is next.

@Chops, I've decide to apply the following changes to Defender: HD d10, Full BaB, bonus feats on 1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th and 18th level. Everything related to Wisdom replaced with Strength.

I'm gonna need to know if you plan to take more levels of Barbarian or Defender, because of your heroic path. Do you plan to use weapons or unarmed fighting.

I was planing on making Duncan more tanky, so he will be more armor oriented. Also he will have a strong protection theme so I will likely take armor training and shield other as talents. Shield other would enable Duncan to take half the damage meant for someone, as well as providing them a small AC bonus. I will probably take tower shield warrior's way, especially if Sorok is coming back as his old tanky tower shield-wielding self. Then, I would also look into this:

SHIELD WALL (STANCE)
You are skilled at positioning yourself together with those around you for greater protection.
Prerequisite: Shield Proficiency.
Benefit: Whenever you are wielding a shield and are adjacent to an ally who is doing likewise, the AC bonus from your shields increases. If an adjacent ally is wielding a buckler or a light shield, your shield bonus increases by +1; if your ally is wielding a heavy shield, your shield bonus increases by +2. If your ally is wielding a tower shield, your shield bonus increases by +3;

That would be a nice shield wall right there.

As for the 7 year story, I figured it would be something along the lines of traveling with Gilian through occupied territories and helping people when they were able in all ways (healing, advice, taking care of robbers or small orc bands) always chased by legats, and managing to stay a step ahead.

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

Gilian build will not change, she'll stay as a healer. For her 5th level spellcasting feat, I'm going for illusion school to have access to invisibility both as a buff outside fights for the scouts and in fights for Gilian who rarely uses offensive tactics.

Dark Archive

I'm waiting on the info from Chops and Sorok concerning their character development. I need that so that I can design their paths.

@All

Some equipment rules: You can keep any magical items that you may have, such as Ilona's Requiem; you can have two primary weapons (two elvish fighting knives; sword and short sword; two hatchets; bow and sword etc.) and one secondary (dagger, sling, throwing knife etc.); armor is limited to medium, as well as shields; if you have appropriate skills, you can make your armor or weapons masterwork. Those of you who have appropriate feats may have up to 2000 gp worth of perishable magic items, such as potions and scrolls.

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

Nightflier, from the first part of the adventure we had gathered:
Thorg collar
Mushroom scepter
Mushroom sword
We did not have time to properly identify them, but I guess we have now.
We also have left a scroll of resurection and greater restoration.

By the way, Gilian is updated except for the background and the equipment.
I'm going to work on Pebble.

OK updated Solvi and Felina to 5th level, I just need to decide what her Eldritch Heritage bloodline will be. She is also carrying the Librarian Staff in addition to the broken collar from Thorg.

EDIT: Selected her Eldritch Heritage bloodline.

Dark Archive

I have a lot of work tonight, so I'm gonna finish Ilona's path tomorow. I'm waiting on Sorok to see if he'll play his old character, or create a new one. Also, I need to hear from Chops about his Barabarian/Defender, so that I can create his path. That said, I think that we can start the game on Monday, if it's OK with you guys.

Sorry about the delay here. Been busy, then last night my RL PC died and I need to make a 6th level arcane caster. This is going to delay me a bit. For now, though, Chops will be mostly Defender. Probably 3 levels of Barb at the most.

That's all I needed. No hurry. RL game takes precedence.

I think that's what Mark is asking. He's saying that her new "body" could be Requeim.

I'd be willing to have Muni take Leadership (assuming Mark didn't want to or didn't have room in his build) and have my cohort be Sorrow as an intelligent sword wielded by Ilona.

I've never been a fan of having Sorrow as an actual person, regardless of how she got the body. (At least not until we're done adventuring. That's not an environment for raising a child if you have any other choice. Especially now that Ilona would be a single mom.)

Well, black blade is Game Master's plaything, essentially. It's a way to introduce some elements into game and to constantly have a convenient NPC at hand.

In Midnight terms, Requiem is pretty powerful as is. I plan to give it Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores, so that it becomes a he. Further powers he would have to gain through rituals and enchanting. And I already have plans how to tie him to the game.

So, that's a no for Sorrow returning as Requiem. If someone wants to create another weapon to house Sorrows intellect - it's fine by me. But I'll still impose "one companion/cohort/whatever" rule.

On the other hand, Muni is a kind of a guardian of Ragnar's clan. It would be weird for Muni to have a familiar, since they would be same size and all, but having Sorrow follow Muni as some kind of ghostly cohort would be kinda cool.

She can be housed in some kind of a weapon, she could be a ghostly 16-17 year old girl, she could be a real girl with a living body. Whatever. There are various mechanics that can make this possible. Improved Familiar is one way, Leadership another. If I manage to create Summoner PrC based on Paizo's Summoner - Eidolon would be 3rd way.

Either way, you'll have to wait few levels to do something with feats or class abilities, or you can create some kind of magic item at a nexus somewhere - most probably Wondrous Item.

Chops, you don't have to take another avatar or create another profile if you don't want to. It seems that other players don't want to change their avatar pictures, and it's really not an issue with me. It was more of an idea. :)

So, old Chops can return to the fold if you wish it so.

Improved familiar for Muni and having her as a ghost would definitely work. Especially if Muni's going to be a lvl 5 caster going towards Summoner to call Ragnar as his eidolon. Ilona would definitely have a maternal instinct toward her which could be interesting.

As far as the Balackblade being DM's playting, I was reading the black blade writeup and the blade shares the same alignment and generally samd goals with some exceptions and comes into conflict more as its ego score increases.

Now I do still have a feat to fill, If I took leadership could Sorrow's spirit be my cohort aside from having Requiem as my Blackblade since there is the use of a feat involved. Also with her Charisma, Ilona's leadership score will be pretty insane.

Real ghost would be too powerful for seventh level. Perhaps some kind of unique ghost/specter/wraith, along the lines of slightly weaker lanter archon? I'm gonna look for appropriate templates in my rulebooks.

You should think about what do you want to do with her. Will she have character levels? What classes? Things like that. That would determine her CR and when will you be able to summon her spirit.

I'm very interested in your Summoner prestige class and the possibility of Ragnar as an Eidolon. If there's going to be any prereqs other than Greater Conjuration, I'd like to know so I can include them in my build now. What are your thoughts on that?

After some long deliberation, I've decided to keep going with Sorok.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Art of Magic lets me treat my level as 1 higher for spells, Eldritch Knight let's me use 1/2 my fighter levels as caster levels. Do they stack? If so I can cast as if I were 5th level.

They should stack. I'll hopefully finish your path today, and then check that out.

Dark Archive

Art of Magic applies only to spells known and the highest level of spell you may cast. Eldritch knight in effect gives you boost in caster level, spells known and spell points.

So, your effective channeler level would be 4, in order to determine spell points, caster level (the strength of your spells, duration, ST etc.) but your known spells and highest spell that you can cast is of the 5th level caster.

I've finished the new heroic path for Ilona.

Mark, you can choose this one or you can choose to keep the old one, if this one is too grim for you.

Beloved of Death:
Beloved of Death

Level Ability

1 Raven Speach
2 Howl of the Wolf
3 Valkirya's Cry
4 Charisma increase
5 Shade of Death
6 Raven Speach
7 Howl of the Wolf
8 Charisma increase
9 Valkirya's Cry
10 Howl of the Wolf
11 Raven Speach
12 Charisma increase
13 Howl of the Wolf
14 Circle of Death
15 Valkirya's Cry
16 Charisma increase
17 Raven Speach
18 Finger of Death
19 Murder of Ravens
20 Valkirya's Cry

Raven Speach: Ravens are tricksters. Beloved of death has learned the secrets of their speach and her words may now cloud the minds of those who listen to her like black wings. Each time she gains this ability, she chooses one effect from the following list:
• These are not the halflings you are looking for: BoD may make a Suggestion as per the spell of the same name.
• Look into my eyes: BoD gains Fascinate ability, like the Bard. This is limited to only one person, unles she takes this ability again.
• Your eyes are heavy: BoD can cause a creature to fall asleep as deep slumber, but with no HD limit. Otherwise, this ability functions like Suggestion.
• Oooo, shiny!: BoD can steal spells from her foes and add them to his list of her spells known. By looking into another creature’s eyes and using raven speach the BoD can steal a prepared spell or a spell known from another creature with a touch attack as a standard action. The target receives a Will save (DC 10 + the BoD’s character level + the BoD’s Cha bonus) to negate the effect. The BoD can choose any spell that the chreature may cast if the creature is lower CL than her, and if it is equal or higher level, the spell is chosen at random and then cast using the creature’s caster level.
• Listen to me: BoD’s knowledge of raven speach allows her words to make a greater impact. She may choose 3 Charisma related skills and gain +2 bonus to them.
• Silent Screech: BoD can make Ear-Piercing Scream, as per the spell.

Howl of the Wolf: Wolf howl has many meanings. Listening to the wolves, BoD has learned to channel her battle-wrath. Each time she gains this ability, she chooses one effect from the following list:
• Howl of Doom: By howling, BoD can cause her enemies to become shaken. To be affected, an enemy must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear BoD, and fail ST. The effect persists for a number of rounds equal to BoD’s Cha modifier, as long as the enemy is within 30 feet.
• Howling for You: Once per day the BoD may inflict double damage with any successful melee as if she had succeeded at a critical hit with a x2 multiplier. If a Howling for You is applied to a confirmed critical hit, the damage is not doubled; instead, damage is dealt as if the critical multiplier of the weapon were one higher. The BoD must decide to use Howling for You after the attack roll is made but before damage is rolled.
• Howling for Blood: BoD becomes filled with bloodlust, gaining +1 bonus to all weapon damage roles. This bonus increases by +1 for every 3 character levels that she possesses.
• Howling for Pack: Once per day Bod may cast Summon Monster IV, but limited to Dire Wolves and common wolves. Otherwise, the ability functions as the spell.
• Ghost Howl: Once per day BoD may summon Ghost Wolf as per the spell. Casting time is changed to one round.
• Strength of the Pack: BoD gains Aspect of the Wolf, as per the spell. Her appearance changes in a following way: Her fangs become elongated, her ears become slightly pointed and her eyes become silver in color (like those of a Siberian Husky). Each time BoD uses this ability there is some chance that the changes to appearance will become permanent.

Valkirya's Cry: BoD is so close to Death, that sometimes she may act as hid handmaiden. Each time she gains this ability, she chooses one effect from the following list:
• Cry of Courage: BoD’s battle cry inspires her allies. They gain +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six BoD’s character levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level.
• War Cry: When BoD confirms a critical strike, she can use this ability as an immediate action to gain hit points equal to her Charisma modifier. These temporary hit points remain until the combat ends.
• Cry of Victory: Once per day, as a swift action, BoD can grant a competence bonus equal to her Charisma modifier on attack and damage to one ally within 30 feet. This bonus lasts for 1 round.
• Cry of Retribution: BoD can take retribution on those who dare to strike her. When an enemy makes a successful melee attack against her or an adjacent ally, the enemy provokes an attack of opportunity from BoD.
• Cry of Challenge: BoD challenges the enemies within 30 feet of her. She gains +4 circumstance bonus on attack rolls made to confirm critical hits against them. This bonus lasts for 1 round.
• Cry of Solace: Once per day, as a full-round action, BoD may grant all allies within 60 feet temporary hit points equal to 1/2 her character level. The temporary hit points last for 10 minutes or until depleted, whichever occurs first.

Shade of Death: Beloved of Death is followed by a shade of her love. It stands just behind her left sholder, invisible to all but her. Even she can see it only in the corner of her eye, no matter how fast she turns. The others feel the cold presence of the shade. Whenever BoD makes Intimidate check, she adds a bonus equal to ½ her character level to the check.

Finger of Death: Once per day, BoD may use Finger of Death as a spell.

Murder of Ravens: BoD has become so close to the harbringers of death that she may now assume their shape. Bod can transform herself into a murder of crows, gaining a fly speed of 40 ft. with good maneuverability. She can cease or resume flight as a free action and transform back and forth into crows. Murder consists of 1 crow per her hp.

Now, about Requiem...

I'm giving you a choice:

1) Requiem can become full-fledged black blade (adapted for Midnight and this game, of course) and gain Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores. You would gain Alertness and probably some other stuff, and you would still be able to enchant it as if you had appropriate feats.

But if you decide to do so, you will not be able to gain a cohort via Leadership feat, familiar or animal companion - even if you take a level in a class that allows you to do so.

2) Requiem remains unintelligent weapon. You still get to enchant it as per Arcane Bond, but you can obtain a cohort via Leadership. You still can not have another familiar, but you may get animal companion if you take levels in another class.

I am working on heroic paths for Chops and Muni now.

I am really sorry this is taking so long, but I'm finishing a project at work right now. I should be finished come Monday, so I'll have more time.

Now,

@All

If you want some feats from other sources than those I've allowed for now to become available, post the names here, as well as the sources and page numbers for those feats. I'm gonna take a look at them and adapt them, or even use them as they are. I will collect those new feats and compile an expansion document. At some point, I'll probably revise all feats and adapt them to the setting, since now there are feats that are obviously not for Midnight. Some of the feats you recommend may end up as class talents or traits, though.

If you don't like the heroic path I've made for you, you don't have to take it. Instead, you can take any path from Midnight 2nd Ed. campaign setting book, or other Midnight sources.

Check out my Races document in my profile. Paragon class is not available anymore. I plan to make them prestige classes instead of level substitute classes.

You are thinking of Ragnar, right?

Well, his ability to take two familiars is based on a feat. He just gets to choose another feat instead.

If you were thinking on loosing the possibility of gaining another familiar/cohort/companion in the future by taking levels in another class - who knows what can happen in the future?

There is a reason why I am banning multiple familiars/cohorts/companions - the party is much larger than norm and it has become difficult for me to keep track of "sidekicks". If the party was smaller - 4 players max - I would allow multiple sidekicks.

Right now I would suggest to all of you to plan builds that are possible with the tools available right now. I plan to introduce new options - in the form of additional feats, new PrCs, heroic paths etc. But that is a lot of work and I don't have the time to do it right now.

I am limiting the options available to the PCs so that I could manage what limited resources I have in a way that would allow me not to burn out.

I like Destined path, will be more useful than the pureblood path Duncan had before.

Characters will be reviewed when all are updated. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Liberty's Edge

Are you still looking for any more players or does Sorok fill it up? I built an elfling wogren rider scout, then noticed they were not listed in your updated races list. Other paths I'd researched were a Danasil scout or a goblinoid Pale Legate Martial--cursed by a fey to have no dreams, so he was less influenced by Izrador's dream sendings.

If your game is full, I wish you a fun game. Be well,
Crow

Since Sorok was one of the original PCs, I'm afraid that the last slot is filled.

Elflings are not on the list because I haven't had the time to do them, and no one played them before.

I'll do a write-up of them when I finish with the heroic paths.

Thank you for your interest in the game. If you wish, you can participate in the Discussion Thread and even create a character just for the fun of it.

Since I plan to rework Pale Legate, this would be an interesting experiment and your character may even enter the game after a while.
