Nightflier's Blackdogs in Absalom will be a game that starts in the City at the Center of the World, but it will take players to Korvosa, Kaer Maga and Riddleport. This is my second attempt at doing what is essentially an Adventure Path. The first attempt is my Midnight game, which is still going strong after two years or so. You can check out both of my currently active campaigns in order to see how I run games and what I expect from players.

Nightflier's Midnight

Nightflier's Land of Ice and Blood

I am looking for 6-8 players and 2 reserves.

Character creation rules:

1) 4d6, drop the lowest, or 30 point buy - decided after the rolling for stats.

2) 1st level characters; max HPs and starting gold.

3) Two traits chosen from the list of traits that can be found by clicking on my profile and two traits chosen from any source published by Paizo.

4) 1 bonus feat in addition to all the other feats that characters receive at 1st level.

5) Upon creation, each character will receive a Heroic Path - a set of bonuses and abilities that you gain every level and are worth about a half of standard class level. This sets you as a hero chosen by fate (or whatever).

Dark Archive

For this game I would like to see strange characters. Tieflings, tengu, samarans, asimar, catfolk... All are welcome.

Hey Nightflier - I'd like to give this a crack :)

Dice Rolls:
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 2) = 9 - 8
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 5) = 13 - 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 3) = 11 - 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 6) = 15 - 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 4) = 14 - 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 2) = 19 - 17

30 point buy for me it looks like

Current thoughts are a Vanaran (Bestiary 3) Monk - will let it mull and put up details a bit later.

One other question nightflier - is the campaign going to be one where a Paladin would be acceptable?

Dark Archive

More than acceptable. An NPC Paladin will have a large role in the game.

You can apply with more than one character. Later today, I'm gonna post additional info on the game.

Spoiler:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 6) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 6) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 5) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 2) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 3, 1) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 1) = 12

30 point for me too

Cool - thanks for the confirm Nightflier.

The other concept bouncing around is a Nagaji (Dragon Empires Gazetteer) Paladin tooling around with a massive greatsword.

I'll let em percolate for a while before settling upon one and doing the detailed backstory.

Interested....

Character idea:

Cavalier (Order of the Cockatrice 2/Rest Rogue (Thug varient)) Don't worry about the mount, won't really be a factor...

Basically a common street thug who rises above his station. He is a fighter/rogue/intimidator build....maybe half-orc or will check out a couple of other races to see if there is something a little more brutal like a Tiefling with a Devilish appearance...

Dice Rolls:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 6) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 6) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 1) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 4) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 1) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 4) = 20 16

Pretty good, not sure if a 30 point buy is better though, will have to do some analysis...
Thorough background to follow....let me know if this sounds okay and I will give you more detail.

I am a very regular poster, you can check any of my characters in my alias'
Thanks for the consideration

rolls:
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 3) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 5, 6) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 1) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 6) = 15
= (12, 16, 9, 10, 13, 14) = 19pt

Going with 30pt. Now to find an interesting race. :)

Terok: You ended up with exactly a 30pt buy. May want to switch if you're not happy without an 18 but not bad rolls for a multi-attribute dependent build.

What sorts of character alignments are you looking for? Noble drow is calling to me but you might consider it way overpowered, or it might be too complicated to justify as a non-evil character.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

Sounds like fun. I'm assuming that the race chosen should be with no ECL...ie...choosable as a race in the Pathfinder books?

4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 1) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 2) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 6) = 22
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 4) = 14

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

Whoa! Never thought I'd say "I'll take the rolls", with a 30 point buy staring me in the face...but I'll take the rolls. (54) point buy!!!

I'll start working on a concept. Pretty much anything goes at this time...What is your ruling on Psionics unleashed?

I'm afraid to edit the first post in case something messes up :-).

Looks like Tiefling is the more obvious choice.....

Any more info forthcoming on what style of game this will become?

Also, any info on the Heroic Paths?

I'm very interested as well. Not sure what kind of character I'll play, will decide once you post up more details later.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 1) = 10

4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3, 3) = 13

4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 5) = 14

4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 3) = 14

4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 1) = 13

4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 1, 5) = 16

Edit: 30 point buy it is! lol

Any limits on starting stats? aka can't go above 18 or below 8 before racials?

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Sounds fantastic

4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 5) = 184d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 5) = 164d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 3) = 204d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) = 184d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 3) = 134d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 1) = 7

so that's 17, 15, 14, 13, 12, 6. I'll take the points cause that 6 really hurts. Real character concept coming up soon.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 3) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 1) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 6) = 19
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 5) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 3) = 9

16, 15, 15, 15, 13, 8

I might go with the point buy, just because I don't know if this character needs that many 15s, and a slighty high stat may help. I'd love to try a fetching arcane duelist bard or magus, heading for Dervish Dancer and Shadowdancer down the road.

Dark Archive

More info about the game (bear with me, please, since I am a bit swamped with work right now, so I may not post with my usual speed.)

No Chaotic characters. Even CG characters would be hard to fit in this game. Only type of Chaotic character that I will consider is a Goblin played as a Comic Relief type of character.

Everything published by Paizo is allowed. That means any feat, piece of equipment or archetype. In addition to that, Open Design stuff is allowed, pending my approval.

There are certain classes that I would like to see in this game:

Soulknife by Dreamscarred Press, Spell-less Ranger by Open Design and Elven Archer also by Open Design. Of course, this means that those character will have slight advantage in getting picked, but only slight.

Right now, only psionic class allowed in the game is Soulknife.

All races published by Paizo are allowed in the game. That also goes for the Bestiary monsters that have "As Characters" entries, such as Drow.

If you choose to play Drow, you will not get persecuted on the surface. For most surface dwellers, you will be just a strange kind of elf or maybe tiefling. Although, you may expect assassination attempts once or twice per level by the elves from Kyonin.

Your characters will be picked solely based upon their personal histories and level of integration in the game world. I am looking for interesting and well thought out characters, with heavy ties to the game world, since that allows me to create better story.

Here is more info on Heroic Classes. They are a part of Midnight Campaign Setting by Fantasy Flight Games. Usually, a player picks a Heroic Path for his character, but in this game you will not get to choose, but I will create a Heroic Path specific for your characters. Essentially, each level you will get a boon. That might be a feat, a special ability, bonus to certain skill, or even class ability of another class. Each level will be a surprise, but I will try to give you stuff that will complement your characters.

Hmm,
Soulknife :) ...

Any chance you'll allow me to play a Xeph??

Also,
Are you using any of your other house rules? Read the traits, should I read anything in your profile?

The PCs are to be junior members of Blackdog Company - a large mercenary company operating from Absolom. Details of the Company will be provided, but here are some things for now: The Blackdog Company is led by Sebastien Blackdog. Not much is known about him. For a time he was a member of the Sable Company in Korvosa, and there are rumors that he was or is a Hellknight. The Company has 13 cohorts, each commanded by a tribune. Cohorts are of various sizes. The 13th is largest, commanded by Blackdog himself. The Blackdog Company uses standardized uniforms - completely black, with silver and golden insignia. Common soldiers do not use any insignia. The recruits, such as yourselves, are known internally as "puppies" and they wear grey uniforms. The members of 13th Cohort are known as "Varyags" and are identified by silver wolf-skull insignia worn on the left side of the collar.

Blackdog Company is famous for accepting anyone. Expatriates, former outlaws, anyone. But, once you are a member of the Company, you are to hold to the highest standards of conduct. Running from the battlefield, desertion, striking a superior officer - is punishable by death. Blackdogs can be considered Golarion's version of our world's French Foreign Legion.

Monkeygod wrote:

Sorry, no Xepth. They are not a part of Golarion. So - no.

For now, the only houserules are the traits from my profile. Later, when you level up, you will use my hit points house rules - for instance, Fighter will use d4+6 for hit points. But that is for later.

No worries, just thought I'd ask.

I think I might go Drow actually. Just standard Drow are allowed, correct? No Nobles?

Dark Archive

I forgot: Warforged/Ironborn are allowed in this game. The 2nd Cohort consist solely of Warforged/Ironborn. To play those PCs, you have to have Ironborn of Questhaven sourcebook, and to be willing to spend some time on designing your PC and compromising with me. :)

Dotting for interest- I'll have a concept when I've looked through the more unusual options on the table.

Dark Archive

Monkeygod wrote:

See one of my posts above. Drow can expect assassination attempts during the game. Ordinary will probably be attacked once per level, and Nobles two to three times per level.

Considering this...

Rolls:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 3) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 5) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 3) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 1) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 1) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 6) = 22

18,14,11,10,9,9.

I can't believe I'm saying this since I rolled an 18, but I'm better off with a 30 point buy.

I think I will plan out a Goblin Cavalier, (Beastrider / Emissary)

Could I use your Weapon Bond trait to do a finesse lance? :)

Aoth Anskuld wrote:

You mean, you want to use Weapon Bond in order to use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack and damage bonuses with a lance?

Yes, you can.

*shudders* i've seen Drow nobles alongside other races enough times to know theres a great deal of power difference between them and the other starting races.

Thanks for the additional info nightflier.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I guess the only real question will be how much I want to play him straight vs. funny. Definitely some options here.

Alexander Kilcoyne wrote:

What he said. I know how much stronger Drow Nobles can be, and I don't want to play one if 1) I'm going to be outshining the other PCs and 2) if my playing one will annoy or piss them off.

Hence my asking.

Sovereign Court

I guess I just don't consider chunks of XP and treasure coming to find me instead of me having to seek them out a problem :P.

Dark Archive

About Drow noble: When I say "assassination attempts" I am not kidding. As long as you play this character, he will have to deal with potential poison in his food, assassins waiting for him to fall asleep, teleporting monsters or whatever. He will be more powerful than other races, but he will have to deal with a greater possibility of his character dying than the rest of players.

I was thinking about a Fletchling rogue heading to assassin later. He'll be lawful evil and fiercely loyal to Blackdog company and its members. Will work on background this weekend if that is an acceptable choice.

Dark Archive

About races and general feel of the game:

My games tend to be a little over the top. That is, if there are Power Gamers, than I am a Power Game Master. The games I run are deadly and you can fully expect that some characters will die. On the other hand, you can expect to have more personal power, more feats and skills than in most games. Generally, I have no problem with what once were LA +1 races, such as Drow or Ogrekin.

For those who play drow elves in my games, I have standard solution, that I forgot to mention before: Roll d20. If you get 1, you are noble. If not, you are just like other Drow. (Bestiary states that one in twenty drow is noble.) So, that's the way we'll go with those who would like to play drow.

Dark Archive

David James Olsen wrote:

That is acceptable, of course. You can also play ninja (which is called "assassin" in my games and I use it as Assassin Base Class).

1d20 ⇒ 3 Normal Drow. Cool, I was actually thinking of doing that anyways, don't want to be too disruptive.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I'm digging the races from the Dragon Empires books. Trying to put together a Kitsune Oracle, or Magus at this time. Maybe I'll just do both, and see which one looks best.

Dark Archive

Once again, you can submit multiple character proposals. Roll the dice for each character. If you have the time and the will to write their personal histories, I can read them and answer potential questions.

Question,
Is the only think from Dreamscarred Press allowed just the Soulknife? Or can I pick feats, archetpes, etc as well?

Dark Archive

Soulknife is only class allowed. You can pick feats, archetypes etc, but I'll need to approve them. Since I only have Psionics Unleashed, you will have to provide me with the material from other sources, if you want to use them.

If you want to play Soulknife, I have certain houserules about them. The most important one is that you can not use Strength to calculate attack and damage bonus for your mindblades. Only Dexterity. On the other hand, mindlbades are finessable in any blade shape. Also, you can only form blades, although you can still choose the type of damage they inflict, and those blades are always of the same general shape - like the Jedi light saber (of course), even if they are using scimitar stats, for example. Further, you can use Dervish Dancer feat with any mindblade shape - even bastard sword - and with dual blades.

All right, I can't resist, let's see what the dice gods will give me:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 1) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 1) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 6) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 6) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 1) = 6
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5, 4) = 18

30 point buy it is!
Thinking...thinking...

Hi Nightflier,

I'm thinking of an Aasimir Oracle.
(Born to rogue parents in squalor. Originally father abandoned, then came back when she grew into extraordinary beauty-- just to pimp her. After a time clients starting coming to her for healing more than for sexual favors. Mercenary leader rescued her and now he has her undying loyalty. She is painfully shy about her looks and tries to hide them.)

Rolls:
6541= 15
5411= 10
6554= 16
6662= 18
6521= 11
6211= 9

I will develop traits and so on more fully if you like this character concept.

Thanks for considering

I love the concept, but I have to ask you to roll again, using Paizo's dice roller.

Here is my submission nightflier. Background and general flavor, assume that is pretty much what you want until until you make some decisions on submissions??? I might tweak him some but here are the basics...

Gorn the Blade:

Ulek wants his gold now, you are two weeks late!, Gorn said seriously as his blade slipped out of its sheath. He liked this part the best. The big baker stuttered as he tried to get out his best excuse...Gorn didn't even bother listening. The baker wasn't even aware that Gorn's other blade also slipped out and was now between his legs.
So I guess I will take your manhood this time, as payment of the interest on your principal????
The big baker paled as he felt the blade rest on his privates.
No, no, you can have the jewelry then, just don't take them! the Baker looked down at the blade between his legs. A few minutes later Gorn was on his way back to the whorehouse, another balance collected with extra interest...

Gorn was born on the streets of Absalom. He knew nothing of his mother and father other than he was born a freak. Thin horns, a reddish tint to his skin, marked him as something else, something to earn the other children's scorn. Years at the orphanage can take its toll on a person or it can make them hard. In Gorn's case it had shaped him into stone. Knowing nothing about his background, his natural "talents" still came in handy. Being able to sneak in and out of places. Creating magical darkness to escape a bully or a mark...handy indeed.
Eventually his "fight" for survival caught the eyes of a local street knife named Ulek. Ulek the Half-Orc had little style. He was a low level enforcer for a local crime boss. One day he ran across Gorn escaping a mark and claimed him as his own. Working with his other "daggers" he spent a few years picking pockets and picking up small debts from merchant types. Between his features and a natural knack for getting things out of people quickly he became Ulek's top debt collector. Just the threats from Gorn's short swords and his implied Devilish threats were usually enough to get the job done.

Unfortunately for Ulek, he had been blackmailing the wrong city official. When the official was able to use magic to get back his "goods", the city guards descended on Ulek and his crew and wiped most of them out. A little luck and a little skill allowed Gorn to barely escape with his life.

With Ulek gone and his services not in demand Gorn wandered a little, doing small jobs but nothing big enough to get any other groups attention.

It was not until sometime later that a chance encounter would chance his life. Gorn wondering into the Bloody Skull. As he was walking in two city guards were walking out....they bumped, "Watch it scum! One word from me and I will have you in stocks." yelled the young officer was obviously brand new to the post. He was filled with his own sense of self importance and wanting to exercise his self worth in his new position. The tavern grew silent as Gorn stood before him.
The hood slipped from his head, exposing his devilish features...he slipped out a word in Infernal Fool..., before switching to common. Speaking the tongue from one of his parents he found usually helped to set the stage, and re-enforce that this person was dealing with something he might not be able to comprehend, "Mayhap we both were not looking where we were going eh young human????" He let the alien nature of the creature before him sink in as Gorn's red eyes burned into his skull. 5 years ago at 13 he had forced gold from the hands of 200lb warriors, this young fop was nothing to him now but he could be dangerous if pushed too hard.
The Captain seemed to pale a little as he gave Gorn and his weapons a once over. The Captain's resolve waiver under his gaze as he just couldn't bring himself to force a showdown.
Maybe....lets go Davis
He scurried out of the tavern like most of his kind do and Gorn sat down to drink. After a short time a man in a black uniform came over, from his stance he was obviously a well trained fighting man and dangerous.
Buy you a drink? he said.
Of course my friend, my table is yours. What can I do for you. I replied.
A beer came over without him ordering it, the man was obviously very confident...
I think it is more about what I can do for you. The name is Kellen. I am part of the Blackdog Company. We are mercenaries. I saw you handle yourself. You lucky the little man didn't pull his blade, otherwise you would be dead, but it seems you have some skill with words...and I imagine other things. We could use someone like you....with your skills.
I don't care who you were or what scum birthed you. What I do care about is that you are able to do some things with your mouth and hands and to a lesser degree with your sword arm. What's your name?

Gorn told him his true name, for some reason Kellen had the look of a man that could easily pick up on deceit...
Kellen spoke again, Take this silver coin to our house. Someone will see to you there and if they also like what they see, you can earn a good living and be more than what you are now. Good luck Gorn, I expect to see you later.

With that he got up and walked away...no small talk just action. Gorn liked his manner and decided he would at least go and see about these Blackdogs...

Personality – Gorn is a very serious type. He knows his strengths, and although he considers himself a threat, he knows when not to step over a line or cross those he shouldn't. Although he grew up on the streets, he is no stranger to working with others and under strict guidelines in a group.

Class – Rogue (thug variant) to start then 2 levels of Cavalier, then probably back to rogue.

Traits - Bully (+1 trait bonus to Intimidate)

Fast Talker - Rapscallion (+1 to escape Artist and Initiative)
Ambidexterous - You are equally skilled in using either hand. Your penalties on attack rolls for fighting with two weapons are reduced by 4.
Dexterous +2 Dex -2 Con

30 point buy:

STR:12
INT: 13(11+2)
WIS: 12
DEX:20(16+2+2)
CON:14(16-2)
CHA:12(14+2)
2+1+2+10+10+5

Feats: Weapon Finesse, Skill Focus (Intimidate)

Thanks for the consideration...

Thanks for the quick reply. Could you send me a link to the dice roller (and tell me how to attach it to my next post). I have 30 years experience with PnP gaming, but this is my first online (non-MMORPG) campaign.

A little patience and I promise you I'll catch on quick. Thanks again.

At the end of this page you have a line that says: "How to format your text" and then SHOW next to it. You click on it and at the bottom you will find a dice roller. You enter 4d6 in the bracket and copy it six times.

Background and general flavor are more than enough for now, thanks. If you get accepted, I may ask of you to change some aspects of your character to better fit the others, or some future need of the game, just to warn you.

I've tried every variant I can think of, and searched the threads high and low... but I cant figure out how to get the dice roller to interact.

So I used invisible castle's instead. That set of rolls and my originals are both lower than a 30 pt build. So here's my 30:

S 8
I 10
W 10 (8 +2)
D 18
Cn 10
Ch 20 (18 +2)

If this is satisfactory, I'll go on to choosing traits and a mystery.

Much obliged,
A
