Luther: ???
Good question. I think Luther wants to go and try to talk to either:
(1) Father Grinsby about what Pallaver was up to in his final days, and about the mausoleum in the graveyard, or(2) the sheriff (or whatever) about the circumstances under which Pallaver was found, and the investigation.
I guess probably the priest, since we have met him. Unless someone else has a better idea. Tomorrow's Sunday? Perhaps I can attend a morning service and talk to him after.
Amaya Harvey |
If play fast-forwards to the end of Amaya's study (rather than, say, the walk back to the Inn or a group breakfast), then she will simply jump back in then.
Amaya will not strike up a conversation with Oukonunaka on the trip to the Inn; she is too tired and is less interested in him than he is in her. I suspect, however, that Oukonunaka might take the opportunity to say something. But, I know the Narrator wants to move forward. I'm happy either way.
The Haunting at Helorus |
A bit of rules errata:
We're going to track lethal and non-lethal damage separately; hit points will be lethal damage, and grit will be non-lethal damage. Your maximum grit is twice your maximum hit points. So, for instance, at full health Amaya would have 10/10 hit points and 20/20 grit.
We'll be using the Pathfinder rules regarding negative hit points and death, which are that a character dies when reaching an amount of negative hit points equal to their Constitution score.
Neither of these clarifications should color your appraisal of the current situation in gameplay...
Amaya Harvey |
I've got some business travel coming up Tue--Wed--Thurs. I plan to check in every evening, but if I go totally MIA, I'll be back by Fri evening at the latest.
Amaya Harvey |
I'm more than happy to play out a conversation if Amaya bumps into anyone on her way back to her room. Otherwise, fast-forward to her room. I'll probably have her read a page or two of the grey book as she gets ready for the day. If the Narrator wants to reveal anything, go ahead and take the reins on that and then Amaya can say a few things about it at breakfast. After breakfast, I can commit Amaya to some hours of dedicated study, if that suits the group.
The Haunting at Helorus |
Gameplay updated.
If everyone's okay with it, we can skip over breakfast and get down to what folks do with their 'Morning' time slot. The visit to Father Grimsby will be in 'Day' time slot if it's up to Stanislav, who wants to skip the actual mass. If anyone wants to attend the mass, it would take up their Morning.
Currently I think it looks like this:
Amaya: Reading On Verified Madness
Luther: ???
Oukonunaka: Sleeping
Stanislav: At his leisure
Also, I've update my profile with all the book information and will update it as discoveries are made. This way we don't have to hunt through gameplay posts to find the information.
Amaya Harvey |
I'm fine to fast-forward through breakfast. If Luther and Stanislav are eating at the Inn (and Oukonunaka is sleeping), then I'd imagine Amaya would stay at the house rather than also leave for the Inn. If breakfast is brought back for Katherine, perhaps also bring Amaya's.
Once Luther and Stanislav leave for the church, it seems that the first "watch" of the day is Amaya's. If this keeps her from dedicated study―that is, she can't simply sit quietly in the parlor and effectively read On Verified Madness―then so be it. Or, if Stanislav will be around the house for an additional hour or so during mass, we can play out whatever is needed between her and him. Indeed, any care (including taking up breakfast) that Stanislav does not provide Katherine can be handled by Amaya.
The Haunting at Helorus |
Luther does indeed still have the key on his person. As such, I'll start the conversation with Father Grimsby tonight.
If Amaya and Oukonunaka want to fast forward to his awakening and RP, that's cool - Luther and Stanislav won't be back until after he's woken up anyway. Just don't decide to take off anywhere before they return.
Katherine has no needs important enough to post about.
Amaya Harvey |
Sounds good.
Since Amaya has not surveyed the house yet, perhaps she could spend her trunk-less and Oukonunaka-less time (1) walking about the interior and exterior to get a feel the residence and (2) checking out the books that are all around the house---searching for something to read, but also trying to get a feel for Pallaver's interests and expertise.
I don't envision any rolls being needed, but I am certainly wondering if there are any patterns to either the physical or intellectual layout of the book collection. Perhaps an Arcana roll would turn up an esoteric thread in a certain stack, etc. I'll let the GM roll on my behalf, if it matters.
If nothing is left but to fast-forward to Oukonunaka coming downstairs, then perhaps Amaya will find some coffee or tea in the kitchen and a book with which to sit somewhere (maybe on the porch on this pleasant and sunny day)---the story can find her there.

Wow, nice Perception roll! Did I recognize my own reflection when I walked past a mirror? Should have waited until after the coffee to check out the house...

Yeah, that's a rough one. To be clear for everyone from a rules standpoint, I only roll a reflexive skill check (Sense Motive, Perception, etc) when taking 10 won't succeed. So, basically, you auto-succeed on any reflexive check you could've taken 10 on and made.
The Haunting at Helorus |
Sorry for the delay guys. Grimsby conversation has been updated. Luther, post any substantive follow-up questions you might have. No need to quote Grimsby's responses, I assume any question topics will be fairly self-evident from context. (I want to avoid giant repetitive blocks of text)
Oukonunaka, if you want to interact w/Amaya at all before the men return now's your chance.
I'll check back in tomorrow night.
Father Grimsby |
I also updated Grimsby's profile. If you click on his name, you'll see an up-to-date character sumary based on what you party knows, as well as his current attitude towards all party members. I attempt to do this for all NPCs so you can have a quick reference that hopefully jogs your memory, rather than searching back through all their posts.
At some point, if I get truly ambitious, I may include all of an NPC's important dialogue on their profile with spoilers by topic. I'm not quite there yet though.
Oukonunaka |
So what's the plan for the afternoon? I'm not interested in reading any of the books. I could tag along with Katherine if we think that's a good idea. Or I could scout something out if you guys want.

The group would probably want somebody to go with her. Amaya is not so keen, but might do it if asked. Perhaps Stanislav or Luther are feeling gentlemanly despite having just been out. If nobody goes (perhaps because Katherine turns down an escort), perhaps Oukonunaka surreptitiously shadows her. I'd hate for something to happen to her while she's out, but Amaya has not risen up to my level of concern.
Amaya will certainly read some more books. Perhaps a conversation with Luther (and Stanislav) is in order to sort out the keeping of the key, comparing notes on the Catholicon, etc.
If Oukonunaka is present for Amaya's debrief on the Catholicon, I'd be interested in whether he'd welcome a scouting task to such a place.
The Haunting at Helorus |
I'd prefer to keep the PC party together for now. Futzing with books takes only a single update and may reveal points of interest/investigation. While it may be mildly incredulous not to, splitting up again and poking around will inevitably leave the researchers with one or two posts while others go out and get into much lengthier adventures, which I'd like to avoid.
Amaya Harvey |
Sounds good. Amaya (or maybe Oukonunaka) can ask Luther about his investigations (and about the key) next. Or, Luther can just start talking... whoever posts first. I won't get on that until tomorrow, most likely.
Amaya Harvey |
So we have stalled out a bit. What does everyone want to do in the afternoon/evening?
Amaya should do her duty and study more books, but not if that breaks up the group undesirably. Let's play that out and make sure that it fits in.
As for right now, everybody should probably report out on their day's work so far. I'm fine if Luther initiates that. I got busy but am free this weekend to start/continue that thread.
Luther Clark |
This is my fault -- sorry. We went on a sort of family vacation last week. I kept intending to hop on and post something, but never managed it (I'm still exhausted...). I will try to correct this today or tomorrow. I'm sorry about that!
Amaya Harvey |
I'm assuming that Oukonunaka followed us in to the kitchen and heard all of these revelations. I left my post with me reaching for the key because I am wondering if Oukonunaka is going to slap it out of Luther's hand and tell us to leave well enough alone.
We might play out the hand-off of the key regardless in case it matters to anybody (including the GM).
If that goes well, maybe Luther wants to look through the journal more carefully? We've only seen what Amaya (via the narrator) pointed out as important. Amaya would not object to him reading any of them, though.
The Haunting at Helorus |
In general please work under the following assumptions:
1. When someone posts that they share info on a topic, everyone in the vicinity learns it. This way there's no confusion/backtracking over who knows what. If you want to omit any information when you share with the party, please make it clear in your posts. Preferably both in character and with an ooc follow up at the end of the post.
2. When you read a book, I will post all relevant information in that book. I may not explain the significance of the information (depending on skill checks), but all the information will be presented so that you may draw your own conclusions. If there's something in a book you can't translate or properly read, I will make that clear in the book's summary.
