Hm... what to buy?
An Amulet of the Mighty Fists would be nice, but I'd have to pick either the +1 or an enhancement like Frost. I'd have to wait until tomorrow though.
Taking a look through the Core Wondrous Items, I can't see anything else Makoa would buy.
The APG brings up Ioun Torch, Bandages of Rapid Recovery, Campfire Bead, and Muleback Cords.
I'm tempted to see how much a siege weapon costs...

I keep wanting to give a bump to the main thread, but it would be totally out of character for Douena to have any interest or talent at planning and equipping a jungle trek. If it were left up to her, it would be lizards and tiaras for everyone!
(Sometimes I think I only play chaotic characters to justify my own disinterest in being well-prepared.)

Lorenz Aeryson wrote:"It seems like I should give her greater service if I'm going to be traveling with one of her priestesses."By this logic, both Nethys and Nature should be added to your list.
Yeah, but Sasha didn't seem to care about Lorenz making nice with Makoa or Jask. ;)

Actual conversation I just had with my husband:
Me: Douena has 950 gold to spend. *scrolls through wondrous items* Ooh, she can buy a bag of tricks! And pull animals out! Wouldn't that be fun?
Husband: (firmly) No! (reluctantly) Ye-es. (resigned) Go ahead. There's no way I can talk you out of this.
Me: (excited) And it's a random draw! You never know what you're going to get!
Husband: (accusingly) You're just going to pull them out for fun.
Me: (duh) Yes!
Husband: You really going to spend your money on that? That's the most useless item ever.
Me: Hey, you never know when you're going to need a bat! The problem is, when you need a bat and pull out a riding dog. But that works, too!
See, Wander, you should count your blessings. You only have to put up with Douena in this thread. He has to live with her! :)

In FFX the character Riku could throw money at the enemy as an attack...
Going to break down and buy an Amulet of the Mighty Fists. Navior, is it possible to find one with the Furious weapon property?

Not in Eleder.
A +1 furious amulet of mighty fists would cost 20,000 gp (the price of a +2 amulet), which is way beyond the value easily found in Eleder (and, I believe, way beyond what you can afford anyway). Amulets of mighty fists are crazy expensive!
However, you could find a regular +1 amulet of mighty fists for 5000 gp.
Navior |
You know, I've never noticed that final line in the amulet of mighty fists description. I've always just assumed the addition of weapon properties worked like standard weapons where you have to have at least a +1 enhancement bonus before you can add any special properties. Very interesting.
You can get a handy haversack without any problem.
Joana |
Can't afford it, though. :P I usually do my magic item shopping in Hero Lab since it has everything all in one big list instead of having to switch between books, but it apparently has some serious pricing errors.
Going to have to find something else to spend her money on; her encumbrance limit won't allow her to save up for something better down the road. Sadly, it also won't allow her to buy anything that has any actual weight. She's already having to leave behind her ranged weapon because bullets are too heavy to carry.

I honestly don't know if I agree with Joana or Urza right now.

Ha! I was far too polite to suggest the same thing when we were bartering with the pathfinders for a tiara.
Joana |
Hey! You'll be glad we have that tiara one day. Unless Douena puts it down somewhere and forgets about it anyway....
You ought to be glad there's someone in the group who drives a hard bargain. Lorenz would have paid the Pathfinders for the privilege of traveling under their name and signed over all treasure rights in perpetuity along with his and Sasha's firstborn. ;P

Mahjik the Flink wrote:"Sasha? Do you think Alton could do that? He's growing up pretty quickly - by the time we reach the first stop on our journey he'd already have come of age."Everyone looks about blankly for a moment. Then Gelik says, "Uh, Sasha's not here, Mahjik. She didn't come in with you."
Finze chuckles. "Don't worry about it, my friend," he says to Mahjik. "I've made that sort of mistake before. I'm relatively confident it's not a sign of madness."
I considered just doing an OOC post reminding you that Sasha stayed behind at the Sargava Club, but then thought it was far more amusing to do it this way. ;)
Heh. Or everyone already considers Lorenz and Sasha joined at the hip. We need a trendy tabloid name for them. Like Lorsha. Or Sashenz.

I assume we're not going anywhere without the guards, especially since we don't even know where this Whaling Company is. They asked why the Brotherhood wanted us, and Douena told them, although they didn't seem inclined to believe her. Makoa asked them where it was, as did Lorenz, and they haven't yet responded. Urza did say he was "walking to save Jask," but the rest of it is just us standing around talking while the guards are conferring among themselves about what to do with us, I suppose. :)

Mahjik the Flink wrote:Diplomacy, gather information on Freeman Brotherhood 1d20 - 1Mmkay, that will take 1d4 hours. We'll go rescue the hostage, and you can tell us what you found out when we get back. ;D
In 3 hours Mahjik will tell you about the ambush you experienced that you could've avoided if you had gathered information for 3 hours. :P
Joana |
Considering we have a bunch of terrorists threatening to kill people and set fire to things unless we are handed over to them, what makes you think we have three hours to spend? Especially considering the guards seem about ready to arrest us themselves rather than let us go our way. As Wander points out, what we do isn't exactly up to us right now. :)
IOW, we're really waiting on Navior to find out what our options even are at the moment.
Joana |
...while Urza works out how to get into the compound.
Right, because Urza is the Stealthy rogue who might be able to get in there quietly. Oh, wait, no, he's not. Then he must be very Diplomatic and be able to work out a peaceful solution. No, that's not him, either. Well, at least he's got a really high Bluff so he'll be able to trick the terrorists and get everyone out safely before they realize it. Nope, still not Urza.
Douena is seriously on the verge of leaving the group, and this is a prime example why. We're in a situation where we need the skills she's invested in, and no one is willing to let her take point for a change. Why didn't Urza just volunteer to march through the underwater temple of Zura, setting off all the traps as he went, because Douena's obviously too flighty to be trusted to be actually good at anything? Why didn't the group refuse to let her channel vs. the ghouls because she might screw it up? :P
Navior |
I'd like to take this opportunity to swear all up and down that if this hostage-taking thing is a scripted event in the AP, I'm not metagaming. Haven't opened the book.
And if it's not in the book and I gave Navior the idea, then I'd like to apologize. :)
It is actually a scripted event, although I've made a few modifications, and the adventure leaves it up to the GM to decide who the hostage is.
Wander Weir |
The only reason Lorenz considered that Urza is the one who needs time to find a way in is because he announced his intentions to do so. He wouldn't think of Douena because she seemed to make it quite clear that going in was a bad idea without actually offering an alternative.
For Lorenz, the difference is that Urza does things (stealthily or no). Douena talks (often quite loudly) about doing things. If Douena had said, "Maybe we can sneak in," then he'd have been thinking of distracting the hostage taker so she could find a way in. Instead, she just continued with her typical loud protestations with verbal daggers.
Lorenz would rather not be on the receiving end of any more of those so he's been trying the new tactic of keeping his mouth shut when it comes to her unless she asks him a question directly. :)
Joana |
Well, she was trying to open negotiations. Hard to do that when the rest of the group is attacking the people she's trying to negotiate with. Or announcing out loud that they're on their way to kill them.
You guys want to break in and slaughter everything, then go, fight, win. Douena doesn't see any reason why anyone has to die today.
EDIT: Talking is doing something when one is using social skills, you know. It's not like "talking" and "doing something" are mutually exclusive.
Joana |
Maybe that's part of the problem. If the intraparty relationship has gotten to the point that every time Douena opens her mouth, the automatic assumption is that she's yammering about something crazy and has nothing useful to contribute, why should she stick around to provide healing and trapfinding and scouting and Bit of Lucking and channeling and everything else she does? She came eerily close to predicting this whole scenario and was brushed off -- because, you know, it's just Douena. If Urza had suggested that party members going off alone might be in danger, he would at least have gotten a respectful hearing.
And all over a feud with Gelik that's as much his responsibility as hers (when she hurt his feelings on the Jenivere, she immediately tried to make it right, and he's the one who held a grudge) and a tiara?
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
Maybe that's part of the problem.
I'm helping!
So what we need is an in-character way to get Douena to both stay and become a more 'important' member of the party(by important I mean someone everybody wouldn't dismiss the ideas of).

Yes, Douena did sort of predict this. Of course, she talked about not going off alone and started issuing her words of doom immediately after she disappeared, went off on her own, and refused to tell anyone what happened to make her so determined to leave the city.
Classic case of "Do as I say, and not as I do" which doesn't encourage anyone to take what is said seriously.
I never read spoiler text not directed at me so I don't have a clue what happened or if she ever did explain what happened to someone else. Maybe nothing happened at all, but it's a case of apparent cause and effect.
For all Lorenz knows, whatever happened when Douena was out doing her own thing is directly responsible for the current situation.
I think the issue (at least for Lorenz), is that it's difficult to reconcile the constant talk about tiny bears and a desperate need for a tiara with the more serious stuff. She complains about Gelik telling the Pathfinders about Saventh-Yhi then shouts out the exact same information in the middle of a busy street with the same breath.
Lorenz wants to take Douena more seriously, if only because of Sasha. It's just that she makes it really hard to do so.
